On one hand you lament about Nigeria, on the other hand you try to prop up a failed idea known as Biafra. One would think by now that we would all realize that one group cannot successfully carry out a revolution in 9ja, it takes a combine effort because the enemy is not singular but a combination of evil things.

Another point, there's a difference between inability to build something and refusal to do it. Nigeria has the capabilities to build and maintain refineries, weapons etc, but because it is far more lucrative to steal money from failed projects than successful ones, our cabals will never allow such wonderful developments to see the light of day.

Lesson we should all learn from Biafra, YOU CAN'T DO IT ALONE, modern civilization is like game of thrones. Allies and partnerships are required to successfully change the status quo.

You don't have to wait for four years to crowdfund to present a candidate at the ballot box, this can be easily truncated. If the youths are serious, they should start NOW to crowdfund, get the required amount of signatures and booth out your underperforming state house of legislatures out of office. That should be your first step! And not waiting for 2022.
Nothing in my comment said wait till 2022! I only proferred a solution, it does not mean the youths are bright enough to follow it grin

Shebi dat guy Obaseki just entered power. Just be watching.... Nothing is going to change in Edo state. He will not do anything significant from his predecessor. It's just political party that changed hands.
Do you know why nothing will happen under his regime, it is because the system itself is not accountable. Even if Angel Michael comes down to earth to rule Nigeria, he too will not perform. The system needs to be overhauled not the faces in government.

You don't get my point, in Edo state, it is only the face of governor that was changed. The entire corrupt system is still very much in place. If the corrupt system is not changed, Obaseki cannot do much, his hands will be tied.
I only mentioned Edo because you siad our votes don't matter. Even if Obaseki does not perform, he can always be replaced. When we sell our votes or refuse to vote, we have zero chance of a peaceful revolution and unless you are ready to spill blood, voting is still the surest way to wards progress. You keep mentioning corrupt system but how do you change that corrupt system by relying on the same corrupt people to change it?

The first step is changing our mentality, stop the selling of votes, protect the ballots, form new parties led by innovation and youth. The next step is getting these people elected from the grassroots up. Next, on the federal level even if it is just 2-3 seats in the House and 2-3 seats in the senate, the change has begun, 2-3 will become 7-10 until majority. We need to think beyond the immediate and focus on the ones to come, our children and grandchildren. We need to deviate from immediate glory and work on something that will last for generations to come. Life is not a sprint but a slow marathon, let's control what we can and worry less about the things we have no control of.

Now now, I know what you're thinking, where's the money to finance all these, I present exhibit one, the power of crowd funding. Do you know how much was raised in a couple of days for the EndSARS protest? Imagine the same passion or more for the new youth party. No more godfathers, no more cabals, we the people are now sponsoring a government for the people!

It is impossible to change an entrenched corrupt democratic system through the ballot box. They will simply rig out the good candidate. If the rigging fails, they will just arrest and prosecute the candidate on cooked up charges even before election starts. They are a many ways to isolate a sincere candidate in a corrupt democracy because the sitting government already has so much powers.
Then can you explain what happened in EDO?

Guy,can we just rest this already ? Quite frankly, you're putting forward some very irritating assertions that make one to doubt, very strongly, your claim that you're a Yoruba person.

What do you mean by "Yoruba race identifies as one group" ? Are you one of those fifth columnists whose mission here is to plant seed of discord in our midst (Yoruba) for the advancement of your own evil agenda ? Have we ever ,as a people,Yoruba people, said that we are not one people ? So what's your point exactly ?

I proffered what I believe was a political solution to what is holding us back as a nation yet,you said I did not answer your question . which question exactly ? That Yoruba people are not one ,right ? You couldn't come up with any practicable solution, rather you kept talking about change of "mentality" or something and I put it to you that how would you influence the so called mentalities of people with different values and aspirations to work together !

The simple question I want to put to you is this : in all of this ,what is your solution to our current political gridlock that serves as an impediment to our development ? I truly hope that you won't repeat that "it is our mentality" crap again. It is neither practicable nor make any sense !

If you truly believe that we should continue to endure the current system that has never worked and will never work for us,while we wait for some imaginary angels to work on our "mentalities" ,I put it to you that you're the one that's living in a fool's paradise !

I'm done with this subject; it's tasteless already !

Truth hurts brother! People from Modakeke still harbor hatred against indegines of Ife. Egba people still detest Ijebu people, Kwara is divided as well. If you removed the sentiments and just reason based on logic alone, you would understand my point. Yoruba is still more united than other parts of the country but let's not pretend division does not exist!

You asked for a solution but you still fail to acknowledge the problem! Are you being dishonest or just plain out of touch with reality? Regional governance is a fantasy that will never see the light of the day, not because it is a bad idea but because the other regions are so disorganized that they would be at a disadvantage by allowing that. I'm Yoruba born and bred, we have the highest chance of excelling if Nigeria dismantles itself but if you think any Federal government is going to relinquish power to regional government without sweat, tears and blood then you are smoking that cheap kush. My solution is all out revolution or nothing at all, soldiers killed people for demanding their rights, what do you think will happen when you threaten the status quo? REVOLUTION NOW and if that is too costly, let's start changing our mentality of selling votes, not voting, looking for immediate wealth and richness. Let's install some moral values and patriotism into the nation, let's vote out the corrupt ones and take back the country.

OROSUNBOLB:
I sincerely do not know what you want me to get or understand here ! Perhaps, if you remain focused on the subject matter and what brought about this discourse, you'll have a clear understanding of my points.

Some streets, possibly Europeans',were shown here and the question was "why don't we have these kind of streets in Nigeria ?" My answer to that was very simple and that's, the present system is not working and will never work for a country like Nigeria or any other African country that's heterogeneous like ours.

How on earth would any sensible person expect a unitary system of government to work in a country with sharp diverse background, culture, religion ,etc ? We are different people lumped together by the Europeans strictly for their own selfish economic gains and that's why it is difficult for us to work together and build an enviable nation like the Europeans.. Most European countries and others alike are ethnically homogenous people.

My point basically is that the heterogeneous nature of Nigeria demands that we should practise true federal system of government as practised during our first republic. We all could see the rapid developments that each region witnessed during that period. True federalism means given a group of people with same background, culture, belief system, same aspirations etc the freedom to own their future and develop at their own pace !

I find your argument that the U S does not practise true federal system of government quite laughable ! Come on,what are you saying ? United States is quite similar to Nigeria in terms of huge population with diverse ethnic groups and backgrounds. And this is why in each State, there are different law that governs their public life and administration - different state police departments, different laws and judicial systems ,etc. What is obtainable (law)in Virginia is certainly not what you'll find Ohio or Texas. They have different ways of doing things because they are ethnically different people ! California is the richest state in the U S because it has control over its resources and does not have to go to the White House ,with cap in hands, to beg for meagre shares from the federation's account.

What states like Lagos,Oyo,Ogun,Abia,Kano and others are getting from Abuja can never be enough to drive meaningful developments and that's the fact ! The present system is defective and can't deliver the desirable developments we all crave for. Did Awolowo, Azikiwe and Bello not achieve a lot with regional system of government ? Powers should be devoted to states ( regions) while Abuja is given responsibility to manage defence, foreign affairs and others businesses that are federal in nature. This is the only way out as there won't be any angel to perform any miracle from Aso rock !

We must go back to the regional system of government - Northern region,Western region and Eastern region - as practised in the first republic for us to witness rapid developments in our country. How do you fashion out a common goal or course for a people with different aspirations and beliefs ? Some people's aspiration may be to build some gold plated mosques in Sokoto while some may want to build a rocket site in Aba or have a world class University in Osogbo ! Are these people same to you ? Can they ever work together ? How do you influence their "mentality" to have a common goal ?

We are different people with different aspirations and priorities and that's why the present system is not working for the country. States should be collapsed into regions where people with same culture, values, aspirations etc are joined together to fashion a common course for themselves and to develop at their own pace while Abuja is retained as a unifying centre for all ! Today,Buhari is operating as if he was elected by his ethnic fulanis alone. Tomorrow, an Igbo man will definitely tow same line and are you going to blame any Yoruba for doing same ?

Regional system that is built on true federalism is the way out !
You're living in El-Doraldo!

Some streets, possibly Europeans',were shown here and the question was "why don't we have these kind of streets in Nigeria ?" My answer to that was very simple and that's, the present system is not working and will never work for a country like Nigeria or any other African country that's heterogeneous like ours.
You did not answer my question, even if we went back to regional governance, what guarantee do you have that the entire Yoruba race identifies as one group? In Yoruba land we have over 40 ethnic groups alone. Even if we managed to work it out in Yorubaland, Igboland/SS is way more complex with over 80 ethnic groups, how will you solve this problem?

If we are to use the excuse of ethnic differences and over diversification as excuses then we might as well split the country into over 100 pieces because I guarantee you Ijaw will not sit side by side with Igbos and form a government. Non 9ja Deltans Igbos will fume when they get left out of major resources. I'm not even going to bother explaining the North because most people still don't know the difference between an Hausa person and a Fulani.

You are absolutely right, the current system will not work but you have not shown anything remotely close to proving regional governance is the way forward. All you have as evidence is Awolowo's time but you're forgetting we have bigger mouths and fatter bellies now. Human greed has exponentially increased and corruption is now magnified! Once again I agree with your premise, the current system is a failure but the solution that you put forth might not work expectedly!
TravelRe: Why Don't We Have These Kind Of Streets In Nigeria? by abbey621(m): 3:19am On Nov 24, 2020
OROSUNBOLB:
I mentioned Awolowo for an obvious reason and that was why I limited my argument to the then old western region. My point essentially was that if that particular republic was not truncated or better still if Yoruba nation was independent, there was no way we would have been at this present precarious level. We could have better streets than those ones shown in this thread.

We all hold our personal opinions about those personalities - Tinubu,Obasanjo,Jonathan,etc- you mentioned above and as such,I wouldn't like to dwell much on them. Some people believe that Obasanjo was the best President while some see Tinubu as the father of modern Lagos ! You can't stop them from holding their opinions. It is their right !

If you're saying "it's not a tribe thing,it's a mentality/cultural problem...." This sounds like a contradiction to me. You may care to explain further. I however know that as Africans,we are highly tribal and that influences our politics too. The more reason why each region fared better in the first republic. Awolowo gave his all to his beloved Yoruba people ditto for Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello. They all served their people ! So what has changed now ? The so called national leaders are actually tribal leaders and that's what has changed !

Do you think Buhari genuinely cares if there are roads or not in Aba or Osogbo ? He is however, very much concerned to have some rail lines laid from Daura to somewhere in Niger republic ! This is because that's where his ethnic fulani are predominant. He wants all the developments for his beloved North ! Is that not what is playing out now ?

I agree with you on the fact that the present crop of politicians, either national or local, are wicked and selfish and that's because the present system supports them. Therefore,if Nigeria is restructured in such a way that each region or geopolitical zone is given a free hand to manage their affairs and to develop at their own pace, there will be faster rate of development definitely and this will positively affect the country as a whole.

Talking about patriotism, nobody, anywhere in the world, is loyal or patriotic to a system in which they feel they are being cheated. We can't shy away from the fact that a lot of people/tribes in Nigeria feel that the current system favours a particular tribe or region at their own expense.

If we must remain together as one people, then true federalism is the only way out. Each region must be allowed to develop at its own pace without any region constituting as clog in the wheel of progress !
You're still not getting it, tribe does not necessarily mean better leadership or better life. Let's take your theory of federalism, are you saying states like Lagos, Oyo and even Ogun cannot give its citizens a better quality of life without increasing federal money?

Let me expose another problem, regional leadership might work for SW but what about SE and SS? Are you seriously saying these people should be comingled or each should have their own region? What of Northerners, we could also divide it into 3 or 4 regions depending on perspectives.

Finally, can you show me a democratic country in the world that operates true federalism. Certainly not USA or any top European country, why is it so? The answer is simple, without a common cuase, a common goal, what's the use of Nigeria? I can use the example of the USA again, California produces the most food items in the USA, should California dictate what happens to the funds of those resources or should it be shared across the entire country? I maintain my stance our poblem is not tribe but mentality, you keep saying we elect regional leaders for national positions but what have our regional leaders (Governors, House of Asembly Reps, LG Chaiman etc) done for their regions?

What guarantee do you have that once given absolute control over their resources, the regional leaders would choose patriotism over fat bank accounts?

OROSUNBOLB:
I don't know about other African countries or black people, but I can say why in case of Nigeria. When you're forcefully joined to a group of people who detest developments and always want to hold on to their archaic and crude ways of doing things, you can never have streets like these ones in Nigeria.

Imagine if the old western region (of Nigeria) was an independent country with Awolowo as its first President or Prime Minister, we would have been envy of most of these European countries. After all, we had Television station, first in Africa, ahead of some of these western countries e.g Spain.

Trust me,with true federalism in which each state is allowed to develop at its own pace, owns and controls its resources, I can tell you that hundred of streets like those above will spring up from southern Nigeria.

The present "almajiri" system,as being practised, abhors anything called development !
Imagine someone like Tinubu became the leader, can you still have such developments when 30-40% of the budget goes towards his pockets? Same goes for our Eastern regions, we all would like to point fingers and blame the other tribe but the truth is that our regional leaders are just as wicked as the national ones. If a Yoruba person could not do it for 8 years, Northerners could not do it for forever and a South-South person could not do it for 5 years, what makes you think any NIGERIAN can solve these problems? It's not a tribe thing, it's a mentality/cultural problem, I said it once and I'll say it again, show me a true patriot in Nigeria and I'll show you a man that has yet to taste power and wealth!
