You're still confusing yourself. I never said there was no middle class in Nigeria, in fact my analysis proves otherwise. Anyone can be considered middle or upper class when parents are still funding them. As a youth corper, I doubt you supported yourself fully hence you had no class. Even most of the ones living in VGC, Lekki and so on are depending on their parents' incomes until they establish themselves fully. Based on your own analysis, traveling most of Europe, going on vacations, you had a car, ate out almost everyday and NETFLIX, I would say you are part of the newer generation whose parents were already in the wealthy classification and that influenced your lifestyle. An average Nigerian does not indulge in most of the things you mentioned on a regular basis and most definitely not as a youth corper....lol

We disagree to agree. My parents weren’t wealthy although they also weren’t poor but I already had projects I was working on as a youth corp member independent of parents or friends which made my reliance on the the youth corp funding quite minimal. I used those projects as an opportunity to move to naij and undertake the youth corp program as I was made to understand that it was a kind of work permit for nigerians who had completed a college degree. There were a substantial number of youth corp members I knew who were working temporarily in McKinsey, GE, oando, Thomson Reuters.... They were also in the middle class . So yea youth corp members can be classed depending on the opportunities they have as youth corp members .Your standards are high though (10M in the piggy bank lol).

I was born in Nigeria grew up in Mushin, went to the university in Ogun state but I've also lived in America for almost a decade now. I have multiple properties and while I am considered middle class in America, in Nigeria I'm way beyond what anyone would call middle class.

My analysis comes from the point of view of working Nigerians and what it takes to live comfortable in Nigeria. It is from the lense of a Nigerian hence the standard abroad does not apply. An average mortgage in America is about $200k, that is about 70 million Niaira and you're right most Americans cannot afford that outright hence mortgage but you have to keep in mind Americans are also inherently more lavish than Nigerians. They spend on unnecessary things from more than 5 tv streaming subscriptions, to making sure they eat 3 imes a day even when they are not hungry. Let's not forget every holiday they spend money to buy things they don't really need and most of them could care less about saving for their children or grandchildren. Middle class in Nigeria can NEVER have the same definition as middle class in the USA or even the UK, if we don't stop comparing ourselves with standards set for abroad we would always fall short. I make about $100,000 a year after taxes and if I spent like the average American I would not be able to save 1/4th of what I save now, which I find ridiculous! My savings have allowed me to invest in Nigeria, if I simply invested in the U.S, I would have to wait till I'm over 60 to start enjoying my retirement.

I believe there is an expanding middle class in Nigeria . Most of the young people you find living in VGC, Lekki , Oniru and agungi are in the middle class. I could afford all these things you’ve mentioned even when I was a youth corp member with short term contract positions here and there. I maintained irokoTv and Netflix subscriptions, I ate out at least once a day , partied almost every weekend, watched soccer at lounges and went on vacation about twice annually. By the time I started working full time I had been to most of the cities in Europe which was probably one of the cultures in learnt in the west (vacation every now and then). I also had a car before I started working in naij. But I never had 10 million naira in my account or owned a house . I believe I was already in the middle class (by Nigerian standard ) as a youth corp member with temporary freelancing jobs here and there. One of the contributors even went as far as classifying Dangote as a potential middle class in west lol . Africa’s wealthiest capitalist cannot be a middle class citizen anywhere in the world . I’ve found it easier to save money and still live well in Nigeria than USA. Nigeria is cheap and I don’t need as much money as an American will need to live decently due to variation in cost of living in both societies. The American culture has got its citizens more individualistic than most Africans . Consequently Americans tend to spend on themselves and only themselves . Most American kids have their college education funded via financial aids even if their parents could afford it. On the other hand Nigerians ( both middle and upper class)?spend a substantial amount of their income giving out to relatives, friends, church or hosting one event or the other. Difference in culture explains that not the absence of middle class . No society lacks a middle class .

This is the way I see it, if you have your own house that you built or bought, 2 or more vehicles and have over 10 million in your account, you are middle class. Anything below this is lower class or average. For you to be considered truly wealthy in Nigeria, you must own more than one house and have over 100 million in cash or financial investments like bonds, fixed deposit, TB, etc.

Some people have never seen anything good in Nigeria and will go to any length to put down the country. Don't get me wrong I'm not immune to the challenges but going by your contribution one can also say 70% of the world lives in poverty. While I don't know much about the OP I can deduce that he/she is one of the numerous Nigerians who equates money to everything. Let's assume you dont know . More than 50% of american adults don't have up to $5,000 in savings or investments. OP talks about cars (possessing 2 cars) which further shows that he/she knows not much outside the facet of Nigeria where cars are one of the parameters used in judging the wellness/comfort ability/class. In first and second world nations ( USA/Canada/UK/Germany/RSA/Singapore) cars are marketed all over the media with all kinds of offers (zero interest for six months/ 5 year monthly payment plan/ leasing options/ trade in options and other financing deals). With $1,000 pay-down I can drive a new car out of the lot after agreeing to some terms with the dealership. You don't own the car till you finish paying for it which can take as long as 5 years in some case. Two to three consecutive default payments could see the dealership get a court order to repossess the car. In Nigeria most people pay-down the full cost of the car (100%) which is one of the reasons used cars are more prevalent coupled with the high cost of importing a car.
On the other hand, I have not met any american during my 4 years stint as a college student who bought their home out rightly without a mortgage plan. They dont own these homes till after 10-15-35 years (depending on the payment plan). With the middle class standard you have set I'm keen to know how many of these cars and houses you have acquired and how much you have pilled up in your account. I have lived in two first world countries and have visited a couple of others dominated by the middle class and most of the inhabitants of these countries dont even have $10,000 in savings. These countries are far more expensive than Nigeria. My housing cost about ten years ago in a shared room is more than what I pay today as rental in Lekki and I am more comfortable (in terms of housing) now than then. A friend of mine rented a 2-bed apartment for about 5.2M per annum somewhere in victoria island. After 6 years he moved back to USA and was paying $4,250 monthly for a one bed apartment in midtown manhattan. He didn't own the house and he had one car. By your definition he is in the lower class but yet he moved to NYC to attend business school and still lived a middle class life in USA with the resources earned here in Nigeria. May be you should also move to a first world country and see if you cant fit into the middle class immediately.

The foundational principles of Nigeria is still affecting Nigeria and Nigerians. States with no form of independence were created to satisfy ethnic and political desires. They all end up relying on the federal government for funding for both recurrence and capital expenditures.
On the part of the people they feel it’s okay to find themselves on the government payroll and get paid every 30 days like some sort of welfare system. Many states are being run with this sort of mode. If my employer does not pay me I’ll consider that as a breach of contract and quit or redirect my services to other ventures . Why do this people keep complaining and complaining ? Have they ever asked themselves the source of these monies? States like Kogi are not economically viable and the earlier the people realise this and adjust accordingly the better.

Nigerians should let America be . Read through some of the comments and I know that if some Nigerians were in the shoes of these consular officers they’d be very irrational .

They should demand for a full refund of "visa fees" and sue for damages then tell them to go eat their stupid country......

Its not about Nigeria or "Nigerian thing" . It happens and I'll even prefer to be denied boarding than to be kept at a holding room in a host country and sent back. They should return to the embassy and sort it out. Were they going on vacation or relocating ?

Not everyone will understand you till they experience something different . I believe Nigerian educational system is terrible and is a likely cause of this mindset of stress being looked upon as normal. Globally policy makers continue to make life more and more conducive for its inhabitants but the reverse is the case in Nigeria with many believing you have to go through a lot of physical and mental stress To become successful. Have a taste of university education in the west and you’ll never think of making comparison with what is obtainable in Nigeria .

Sometimes I just seat and wonder how civil servants and minimum wage earners can live in Abuja/other expensive cities, and comfortably afford the high cost of rentals which is often thrice or more of their annual salaries.

As a government, you rightly have a cap on salaries and how much you can pay your workers who must be living in these areas to be able to work for you but you forgot or choose to forget to place cap on rentals such that your citizens/workers won't be over-exploited and would have some change to feed and meet other needs.

How the government hopes to fight or discourage corruption without tackling these basics still seems to me like a mirage.

I’ve always wondered too. A director earns about 300k monthly after about 30 years in service . They are there for the benefits/juiciness of the office not for their legitimate income

Occasionally, I am approached to give insights on life in Canada, Jobs and integration. I am not quite sure I am in a good position to answer as I have only been here for barely half a year, and then again I can't possibly know the prospects for every field and every person, so its hard for me to say anything specific to a wide population, and I am quite cautious making uninformed statements that could end up being the bedrock of someone's life decision. Nonetheless, I feel if I scribble some ramblings about what I think and have experienced, there maybe a thing or two to take from it. I have chosen to reply here to leverage on the possibility of people who may know better to peer-review and correct the errors in my thoughts.


When you start planing your trip to Canada, you learn of the numerous immigrant settlement schemes, bridging programs and even academic programs/courses that could help you integrate into your industry. Generally speaking, it is a good way to start out on the gamble but I would say don't be carried away by their lustre. They each have different success rate depending on your field, background and goals. Do not be in a haste to jump at them, do your research to know which is best for you. I have met quite a number of immigrants that invested their time on one scheme or the other without it leading to the expected end/significant result. Understand that the staff of these program are actually paid to tell you only the success stories, some to no fault of theirs as they rarely ever have a balanced narrative on the outcome of their programs. The best way to learn if it's worth your time is from those who went through it.


You also may have heard that it is important to know how to write a Canadian Resume, a good one for that matter. Nonetheless, don't fall into the group that spends all the time in the world studying resume writing, unless you make really crappy resumes. Resume format are themselves not miracle centers, so you just need basic knowledge of resume writing(take this with a pinch of salt because "basic" is relative). I think what really matters is what you can put on that resume, what you already have/know. See it this way, if I take what maybe a fantastic resume belonging to Okonjo Iweala and replace her details with mine, chances are the former fabulous resume would turn out lack lustre. So if you already know more than the basics of resume writing, you would better invest your time by focusing on how to get your foot in the door, and many times the missing link would be local experience, skills, reputable credentials and networking(yes man know man dey canada small lol).


So assuming you are now at the point where you feel you have some gaps to fill to make your resume sparkle. Which path do you tow? Gaining Canadian degree or relevant Canadian experience? It is important to know to prioritize, go with which would be more relevant/convenient to your goals. Another thing to consider while planing is relevance, Canadian experience in just about anything may not pass as much in your field e.g having experience as a Customer service rep would likely be utterly useless when applying for a Civil Engineer position. If you choose to go get a Canadian degree/credential, don't assume having Canadian degrees in just about anything would get you a job. Degrees are not paid for here, make sure the market exist for it. I say this because I have met a number of Canadians(with credentials from reputable Canadian institutions) that are struggling to land jobs in their fields. oh yes!


An immigrant could apply for over 100 jobs and fail to land one. If you happen to be that immigrant, don't let it get to you, just keep going or try to figure out what you could do differently. Don't be too hard on yourself, and never see it like its an appraisal of your life. As I mentioned, immigrants are not alone in the hustle, some Canadians are underemployed too.


An occupational research is vital especially if you decide to switch careers. Start out by evaluating the relevance of the discipline/specialty in Canada. Study the labour market, know where there are jobs for you. Don't let news like YYY Province was unable to fill 20,000 vacancies bamboozle you, get down to the details, find out exactly what sort of jobs those 20,000 jobs are? are they the kind of jobs you would move to the province for? Checkout the projections for your field/career of interest, know the factors that impacts it, demand and unemployment rate across provinces, is your job seasonal? know the wage(do not rely on average wage, Mean is not statistically as important as Mode in this kind of distribution). Also learn what and how long it would probably take for you to get in, I didn't say for anyone o! Nothing is as important as introspection and making decisions that take into cognizance your own realities and background.. Ask yourself how would the reward compare if you invest your efforts in a different field.


lastly(stupid me, this should have been the first thing sef), make sure you disabuse your mind of Canada being a Utopia even if you choose to settle in the part that has the postal code "L0M 1T0". This is particularly important for those who unlike me, had a fulfilled life in 9ja lol. If you have overly high expectations of Canada, you may find life quite challenging here and you want to be mentally ready for that. To get ahead easily and quickly, you may need to humble yourself. Inshort that one go be default settings when the bills start pouring in and forces you to do do what you have to do until you find what you want to do. It isn't uncommon for a Senior Bleep to have to apply for a Junior YYY while working a survival job in the meantime to pay bills. Nor is it uncommon for the Uber guy to have a PhD in Engineering , even your successful Mentor may have done similar things in the past. What matters here is just your goals and plans, be strategic about it, hopefully with time you'd get to your destination.


Footnote: Canada is a leveler, so it is easy to to think we are all the same as immigrants from Nigeria and such we can extrapolate off anyone's case. This causes some people to erroneously tow a path because XX who is an immigrant from Nigeria just like them is doing it, without knowing jack about why it is okay for XX to and may not be okay for them. A good number of people here still have businesses, investments or spouses in naija that funds their living expense here, some came with fat savings, and some agbayas like me are still single, such category of persons have a large margin of error for their plans that you may not have. Point is while you get advise, try to also learn if its applicable to your situation, don't just jump in on everything said. We are all different, there are people who for the sake of their kids wouldn't mind anything Canada throws at them. On the other hand, some people by virtue of their psychological wiring wouldn't find fulfillment and happiness without their career. Know yourself and know what sacrifices makes sense for you and configure your plans accordingly, don't get bullied by what the majority thinks because at the end of the day your truth wouldn't subject itself to an election.

Spot on bro you are one of the few real Nigerians out there . Most Nigerians create the impression of Canada being a perfect society with no challenges . Was once in a similar scenario while on OPT training in us . I knew I had a much stronger network in Nigeria and also knew about the challenges in Nigeria but didn’t feel too comfortable with the system and decided to move to naij . Landed two good offers after national service, move a level up after first year and a second level after another year , got an apartment in an upper middle class neighbourhood, shipped in a saloon and have been pretty much able to live comfortably . However the Canada gospel is being preached in many places these days and sometimes ask myself if I’m seeing things wrongly as I don’t think it will be far different from other first world countries ( Scotland /USA / Switzerland /France ...) that’s I’ve spent time in. Many also say it a sacrifice for their children however I recall our parents and their peers living/working in Africa and sending us to college in the west without having to move their lives as well. I also know of some Nigerians with dual citizenship (birth right citizenship) who have access to live and work in both worlds . Has Canada met your expectations so far ? I haven’t been there yet the closest I’ve been to is buffalo

There is no need to argue about this. Everyone has their preferences. Keep yours to yourself and let others keep theirs. Don't push it down the throats of others.

H1B visas have been used by many programmers to move to USA through infosys (an Indian company with presence in USA and license to sponsor H1B visas) and other companies . In Silicon Valley many of the companies have found it cheaper to bring in Indian and Mexican software developers to the US to work at tech companies for very low pay which a white American will not accept . It’s been abused over the years and trump has also criticised the current H1b . It’s becoming a cheap labor route to tech companies . They promise these Indians green card sponsorship after 6 years and many of them work their lives for lower pay with the hope of becoming permanent residents via the EB1 program. In most cases the companies end up filing for an EB2 or EB3 which takes a long time to process which further keeps these Indians tied to their sponsors waiting waiting endlessly. I’ve witnessed this system first hand as a student and till date still wonder why a good number of people I come across on nairaland paint a rosy picture or try to share statistics they know little about. People laboured in vein to build the present day North America for their unborn children and not for Africans . Consulting companies like Delloite often transfer there workers from third world countries to the US on L1 visas and have them live in America for some years (1-2) while still earning their Indian pay as they are employed to local indian office. They provide them with accommodation and food as they work them out as a means of reducing cost and maximising their profits . A number of friends from other African countries have asked me why Nigerians struggle to go through these things despite the resources the country has . It’s a known fact and Africans from even poorer countries than Nigeria seem to be more open about their place in the west but when I come inn nairaland I just read stories far from reality . In Canada I’m not aware of any major industry thAt goes out of its way to recruit foreigners to achieve their goal. The EE program is an incentive of the Canadian government and not the Canadian people. That’s why many secure the work permit and are welcomed at the airport by face the opposite in the job market.

You got your preference and I got mine . Canada’s economy and trade is heavily tied to that of the United States. Canada remains unattractive to me irrespective of what you think. Express Entry ain’t attractive to most people doing well in their home countries and that’s why almost half of the EE migrants are from India ( high poverty nation ). The founders of Canada did not labor for the nation to favor African immigrants even if you write a whole essay presenting Canada as heaven. An Irish or American migrant will still integrate into Canadian society more easily than A black African . We know what life is like in the west for black Africans and don’t know why you are listing out Ireland , U.K. , USA et al. Or do you want to convince us that Nigerian immigrants and Irish immigrants enjoy the same level of acceptance ? Tell that to others not me.

I don’t know what this is meant to achieve but I recall my first Christmas in Lagos after moving to naij . Some old friends visited ( we were all in our mid to upper Twenties ( 26-28 years old ) . We (three guys five ladies )went to escape on Adeola Odeku to have fun. It was about 11:20pm and still scanty . We wanted a place to seat down and the bartender said we needed to spend a minimum of 600k to get a seat and table in the regular spot and a minimum of 1 million to get a seat and a table in the VIP spot . Well we partied , had fun with a few bottles but not been there since then. I guess the business was built around this kind of mindset that people will come and spend a million naira on drinks on one seating .

Don’t have to come to Canada . Never found it attractive. Lived in DC area for four years and made trips to Buffalo a few times but never found a reason to cross over . Americans see Canada the way Nigerians see Niger. Canadians are not as open minded as Americans (met a few of them) and can only imagine what they are like at home . If it was such an attractive place why is the Express entry program only attractive to citizens of third world countries ? Haven’t heard of Europeans and americans take advantage of it in large numbers.

It’s the same in every western nation. Preference to the native white over all . Except you got something exceptional to offer . Not been to Canada but witnessed the trend in east coast US and England. Tolerance is better in US though but overall no where is easy. The problems we have in Africa is different from the problems that will be encountered in the west (as an African ) but then challenges are challenges no matter how it presents itself.

I haven’t been to Canada but man I’ll chose Germany any day anytime over Canada . I was very impressed when I visited Berlin and Frankfurt with the level of development and industrialisation. I guess the language barrier makes it easier for Nigerians to settle comfortably in Canada.

Why are Atiku and El Rufai lamenting when they could have done something drastic about the precarious situation of NNPC populated by their friends and families.

Till today I don’t know how NNPC has benefited the common Nigerian. I was surprised watching how people condemned the move to sell NNPC and accused el Rufai and Atiku of planning to sell the company to themselves. In 2015 el Rufai declared that he was worth 90 billion naira . In 1999 Atiku declared a net worth of over $500 million. How does hating them on this NNPC sale issue favour the average man on nairaland who is probably hoping to get a 6M-10m per annum Job at NNPC ? It will even be easier to get employed in a more transparent NNPC than what the country has today

U.S is really not mad at Nigerians staying behind in U.S but those that will enter U.S and move across the border to Canada (US and Canada shares info about applicant now) If you do your research very well even though I'm not V.O but I'm privy to a lot of these information and I can tell you categorically that between 2015-17 Nigerian bankers crossed U.S border to Canada then any other profession.
Banker don cast... ask around and look around... how many bankers get B1/B2 nowadays.

Lol I worked in a bank 2017/early 2018 and in the department people went to USA and returned very often for vacations, short courses and professional training. I also applied a B visa and was issued with no difficulties. There are different kind of people that work in the bank and the VO's tend to ask bout your day to day task . A highly skilled banker is not likely to cross the border to seek asylum in Canada. A cashier in the bank is more likely to do that

Haha yes oohhh. Some of them earning well but involve themselves in some kind of hustle that I dont understand. A banker taking home 1.2M a month migrates to usa on B visa to hustle

Goodevening I went for an interview today but I was denied I have been to the Usa three times prior to the interview. Before the interview I filled in the form I had no relative in us. A day before the interview my agent said I should say my Mum was in us .This was the question as follows

VO: do u have any relatives in us
Me: my mum
VO : how did she go
Me: she divorced my dad so she moved on

I don’t know why I was denied.

When next am filling the form should I indicate that I do t still have any relatives there and when I go for interview the next time I reapply should I still stand my ground I have no relative there. I hope it won’t affect me? Cause of my previous situation?? Will the VO be aware my mom is there if I say no I have no relatives??

Read all kinds of complicated stories here. Isn't a visa application meant to be a straight forward process? At least my applications have always been straight forward with no issues or denials (EU countries, USA, UK, Brazil ). Our people even make the jobs of VOs in nigeria stressful with all these stories.
When I was a student there was this schoolmate of mine from nigeria who was also on F1 and from a good doing family in Nigeria. His mum was always complaining about Nigeria and preaching the american dream. All his siblings were born in america except him. He overstayed his visa as a child but didnt get banned as he was a minor. After secondary school he moved to US on F1 and was living like a US citizen. He never went to nigeria on holidays, his visa stick expired but he never bothered to travel to nigeria and get issued another visa because his I-20 was still valid. HE kept changing his major and having different I-20's issued. His siblings (born in usa) all moved to USA while he was still studying. His nigerian passport expired but he was still living the american dream with no intention of applying for another passport. Then suddenly his uni told him he needed to travel out of usa and get issued another visa as he was out of status and wouldn't be issued another I-20. After utilizing all avenues, he got a passport and returned to nigeria to apply for another F1 visa. Bottomline , he was denied. His issue was just too complicated and I was wondering why people complicate things for themselves.
