Some things sound very strange to be true but USA and UK medical facilities are currently overstretched with thousands of Covid 19 infections. Even a 15 year old Nigerian knows about needing a visa/pre-authorization to travel to EU member states. What will make 58 Nigerian doctors attempt to travel to UK without any visa/authorization ? What will make 60 Nigerian doctors arrange a chartered jet ? The UK government was directly or indirectly involved in this arrangement. Forget about the norm these are not normal times. The chartered aircraft got a landing permit to arrive in Lagos. How did they get this permit without the Nigerian government. Not everything we read on the papers are true. We have heard the NIS version of the story. Hopefully one or two of the physicians denied boarding will also say their side of the story.

They all had letters from the UK Home Office and the UK also sent a jet to convey them. It's part of the Covid strategy as countries (uk, usa etc )are looking for doctors. The UK high commission visa section is currently closed thus the government made this arrangement though Nigerian government countered it. A set of over 100 doctors left for USA about two weeks ago .Air peace conveyed them to Lome, Togo (Ethiopian airline's mini west african hub). From Lome they all boarded an Ethiopian airlines flight to USA. Nigerian government had to pull this move else there will be no more doctors left here lol .

Contrary to what many think civil servants in Nigeria are killers of businesses. The airlines are even much more considerate but FAAN and the aviation ministry come up with policies that have been killing Nigerian airlines . The airports in Nigeria today are very ancient and in a poor shape with dilapidated infrastructure due to FAAN’s refusal to invest in expansion, training, maintenance and upgrade of the airports. TheY want more money and Probably pressureD the minister into implementing this. The minister has been pursuing a concession agenda which FAAN officials have been against thus mobilising the unions against the concession of the airports. I guess this is part of the compromise he has been hoodwinked to make to prevent the unions from causing chaos. The battle to change Nigeria positively is not an easy one. Now I understand you. The laziness of banks is also a factor of environment. For long the government has kept interest rates at 14% . If I can take deposits from people and loan to government at 14% -18%(treasury bills and bonds ) for doing nothing why stress myself lending to the real sector with all the risks involved .

However that seems to have changed as the CBn has crashed the treasury Bill rates and introduced a 70% loan to deposit ratio. The result of this policy Is already being felt in the retail segment and with time businesses will be able to access credit .

Changing a system is very tough because benefactors of the old (bad) system will continuously resist any reforms to control there interests. For instance the sector needs another consolidation as our banks are still weak in terms of capital base . However it’s not an easy task as the current operators with weaker capital base will frustrate any attempt to increase the capital base requirement. For the size of Nigeria’s economy we need banks with at least $5 billion capital base for a start.

A typical ATM in the U.K. is powered by public electricity . In Nigeria backup power is provided along with security. What is the average cost of funds in U.K. ? What is the cost of Data ? These ATMs are computers constantly sending and receiving information to complete transactions. All these adds to the factors of production. Are ATM machines and spares manufactured in Nigeria ? In U.K. most spares are available in U.K. or within the EU where customs duty and other import fees are waived . MasterCard and Visa charges on majority of the cards used are settled in dollars (what is the strength of the local currency?) . If you run a bank in Nigeria how will you fund all these ?

Nigerians in diaspora always come online making comparisons here and there in the process condemning things. If a typical British bank comes to operate in Nigeria and replicate the model they operate they will not survive the Harsh environment

I have been in UK for 7 years doing business. I have never been charged for debit card, Cheque book issuance or any stupid sms or account maintenance charge and all banks in UK are light years ahead of Nigerian banks.

There is no need comparing U.K. with Nigeria . Even a child knows that U.K. is much older and advanced country than Nigeria. Slavery officially ended years ago and Africans are gradually beginning to believe In themselves and there ability to build there own sectors/industries . You can build the house for a start. You don’t have to live there but at least you’ll have some sort of comfort knowing that worse case you’ll move in there. I’m not so much of a fan of living in poor neighbourhoods or neighbourhoods that are underdeveloped. The reason being that if you aren’t careful you may get influenced by the neighbourhood. One of the reasons Nigerians behave the way we do (Queue up for stomach infrastructure , accept anything no matter how bad , etc) is because of our environment. In a dilapidated environment your kids are not likely to gain the exposure, confidence and thought process expected of a 21st century child. Not everything is about naira and kobo . These are all business decisions and has nothing to do with Allen onyema . The airline’s fleet of Boeing 737 gets All it’s maintenance done in England without any landing permit issues . I’m not even sure airpeace applied for a permit to evacuate from London . Most of these countries are treating evacuation as commercial flights because tickets are sold as a result they’d rather Nigerians buy British airline’s ticket And deploy all sort of tactics to muscle out the Nigerian airlines. 60 years of independence and we still sick up to these western forces . To clear the air, I don't work for NNPC, CBN or FIRS, but I'm just trying to be a bit honest here in other countries people who work in these types of parastatals don't and can never earn the same as people who work in other government agencies. The purpose for this is to attract the best brains and since they work in areas that has to deal with the revenue earnings of a Nation to prevent any form of inducements or corruption tendencies so that the funds generated by these people would not be touched because they are presumed to be comfortable. But what we have in Nigeria is a complete opposite of the reason for their monstrous pay. Just know that if this report is implemented and the salaries of these people reduce drastically. We are heading for a massive disaster. Brain drain and unbelievable levels of kleptomaniacs in government parastatals will be the order of the day.

I still believe the regulatory agencies are not doing enough . One of the reasons the pension funds/assets have grown to its present levels is because of strict regulatory oversight . Same reason the banks have also emerged much stronger over the last 10-15 years . If not for the strict oversight activities of pencom, ndic , cbn they’d have also been weak and fragile like the airlines. I was listening to hadi sirika some months ago and he said Nigeria airlines go and buy very old planes which generates a lot of money for them via ticket sales . They have fun as the money comes in daily till the aircraft is due for C-Check which they are usually unable to afford . Then they dump the plane with the MRO facility and look for another plane to take and continue the cycle of owing their service providers until there debts pile up and they go bankrupt .

There was a time Nigeria banned aircraft above 20 or 15 years, I believe it was after the bellview crash but as usual, we don’t maintain or enforce laws. I’m sure some big man lobbied to have it relaxed.

At least stronger financial regulations forced banks to merge. Imagine a regulation forcing airlines to have at least 15 aircrafts to be able to qualify for commercial operations and a maximum fleet age of 15 . They’d be forced to merge or look for investors . Look at how medview disgraced Nigeria by operating a scheduled service to Gatwick with only one aircraft. The aircraft got grounded and passengers got stranded . Same with arik air : they started well but later became a mediocre airline with no regards for Client/operator contracts. Today airpeace on the domestic route has no regard for passenger ticket timing. You buy a 1:30pm flight ticket and they depart hours later blaming it on poor airport infrastructure and weather. Although I once read that they were replacing their fleet with a modern embraer .

Many have come and gone, Okada, Kabo, Sosoliso, Bellview, Arik (which I had great hopes for) but they all fail because they approach aviation with the Nigerian mindset of accepting low standards and cutting corners or simply as an avenue to park ill gotten gains without the required expertise. You will NOT gain international recognition, if you operate with a lower standard even if that low standard is acceptable in your home nation.

The world is leaving us behind in many facets of our lives, this is just one. Nigeria should be the hub for aviation in Africa, we are uniquely positioned at the centre of Africa but Ethiopian Airline, from a country 1/5th the size of Nigeria is the largest and the most internationally recognised Airline in Africa. it's not putting Nigeria down, it's just stating the facts. You’re also right from the perspective you’ve just described . From the little I know about aviation , Nigeria does not need more than two or three strong airlines . Also shameful that some airlines operate just two or four aged fleet . There needs to be a better regulation that will see through the emergence of stronger airlines. It’s a shame that Nigerian airlines have failed to adopt best practices by hiring professional managers and building something they’d be proud of years later. They are all fragmented and competing among each other for the domestic space whereas the foreign airlines are repatriating over $2bn annually. They had better introduce regulations that will make our airlines more competitive. The minister of aviation is pursuing a national carrier project which is not likely to succeed.

This is one thing I find interesting. I have friends from other African countries that are less economically well off than Nigeria
and they always heap praises on their countries saying good things about it (Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania. Ghana and Mozambique).
In 2018 I met some ethiopian cabin crew members at eko hotel and they told me much about ethiopia. I told them I had only passed
through the bole airport but never been to the city. Over time, something took me to some of these countries and you
could tell that nigerian cities (abuja and lagos) are more economically and socially advanced than these cities.
The point I'm trying to make here is that these people are much more patriotic irrespective of the shortcomings of
their countries. Back to nigeria, as a people we are so full of hate and always trying to bring down each other.
Ethiopians are so patriotic that if you visit addis ababa and try to rent a house they'd charge you a foreigner more. The
housing agents will hardly ever compromise on this. They'll never allow a foreigner establish a business without an
ethiopian owning at least 50% shares in the business. An ethiopian will hardly ever fly any other airline aside from their
national airline. Last time I travelled to addis from nairobi on kenya airways, the flight was at 11:00pm and I tried to get an afternoon
flight but the agency told me ethipians won't grant non-ethipian carriers daytime slots just easily.
On another occasion I was planning a safari trip and was trying to decide whether to go the masai mara in kenya or seregeti in
Tanzania . I reached out to two people I knew in Tanzania and they both told me to do it in Arusha (Tanzania) giving me
reasons and telling me how its crowded in masai and more expensive in kenya. I reached out to a former classmate who is
from kenya and she told me to do in kenya and how the nairobi national park in part of the city and told me about other
aspects of the city I could explore.
Here we are with the liquidation of nigerian airways in 2003, no airline has gotten it right. Nigerians are now even
turning themselves to marketing and gloryfying these foreign airlines that even place their worst equipments on the
nigerian routes. Are we still enslaved ? I've always believed that cost of travelling the Nigerian routes are over priced by these western carriers but here we are glorifying them and bringing down the investment an individual is trying to build.

Again that’s also been wrongly put out by Nigerians who for some reason try so hard to show-off their life in Canada. From what I understand you have to apply for these palliatives and prove that you need it. But again will a middle class African with some form of comfort leave the continent and travel to North America just for palliatives? I surprisingly only see that in Nigeria. It’s not a common practice in the SADC region . In Baltimore MD the palliatives being given is about $1200 monthly which wouldn’t rent you a decent 1 bed apartment. While these may look attractive in Nigeria it can never keep a man who is doing well in Africa happy to the point of leaving all you’ve got to stay in a USA or Canada endlessly

Lol forget the challenges in Nigeria. Not everyone is suffering. A good number of people are doing well here (very well). They went to Canada on a visit (business or otherwise) before the lockdown . Well the oil prices have been on a downward trend for some time (Brent was $63 in December 2019, now $24.51).

Add the fact that our breakeven oil price, the price that oil should be for Nigeria to have a surplus budget is $139 per barrel.

At the end of the day, our reserves will fall. If we wanted to raise our reserves right now, government would be owing everyone salaries, senators inclusive, and it would be finding it difficult to pay for bills.

Buhari is not a good leader, granted, but he wasn't responsible for making Nigeria's economy oil dependent either.

One of the reasons he was was elected was the bad management of the economy which was blamed on the over-dependence on crude oil revenues , mismanagement of the petroleum product subsidy program, high import bill and many others . If these problems weren’t there Nigerians would not have needed a new leadership. Five years after we are still talking about Nigerian economy being oil dependent. Truth is that he came to also partake in the management and frivolous spending of our receipts which was why the appointed himself the full minister of petroleum resources. There were/are other areas that needed urgent attention ( agriculture , power ) that would have kickstarted the process of diversifying the economy . He wasn’t as interested in those areas as he was in crude oil. The government has failed and will not be able to revive the economy from its present state

The positive thing is that they are able to earn well. I met one that was working in first bank back in Nigeria and earning about 120k a month. Now she earns a little over 3.5k canadian dollars on the average working customer service after a lot of overtime. She is always stressed out sha. 3.5k is about 980k.
It looks like she is on course to save a lot of money before mid-year, and plans to visit Nigeria by July. She didn't tell me explicitly, but clearly she's going back to see how she can revive a few friendships back home that may lead to marriage. She is soooooo lonely. She cried sef. Eyah!

The CEO in return asked for the state government’s support in developing the route and further admitted that the airline was getting a load factor of 80% when they were operating on the Enugu route but are now witnessing a load factor of less than 40% on the port harcourt route . Why Did the passengers from eastern Nigeria chose to fly from abuj/Lagos as opposed to rivers ? People are preparing themselves for the inevitable post oil economy . I am not Yoruba . I am from the Niger Delta region. Rivers state is very unsafe. I go there very often and you don’t need anybody to tell you how much of an issue security is there. The average expatriate that comes to work in Nigeria picks Lagos ahead of rivers state . Have you asked yourself why ? Nigerians have moved on from Yoruba/Niger-delta battle . Only the gullible fall for that. Ask dangote , Gabriel volpi, Jim ovia , rabiu of BUA, atedo peterside, elumelu , Allen Onyema and the likes why they invested heavily in Lagos . Are they Yorubas ? Dangote even decided to build a refinery in Lagos when the crude oil reserves are situated in “niger delta “. That should tell you that there is something wrong with the south south region that makes it unattractive for business. Even if you make Rivers state a country the Ikwerres, Ogonis and Kalabaris will fight one another and end up with a failed country

This is one of the reasons Nigeria will never go beyond it’s current state. States are meant to independently develop there own streams of income rather than relying on the federal government for everything. Imagine what Nigeria would have been like if the revenue derived from crude oil was used solely for capital projects . But there’s this struggle for some share of the oil revenue to be given to governors who in turn mismanage the sad funds . Lagos is now ahead of rivers state in many areas including the area revenue generation . 80 percent of the funds donated by the private sector towards the covid project was contributed by Lagos based companies amounting to about 10 billion naira excluding the extra 10 billion from FG . Rivers government should build a city conducive for businesses to thrive rather than politicking.
Jonathan bowed to the same pressure of sharing proceeds of the excess crude account to state governments . Today the naira is worthless because the was no excess crude account to support the currency during the days of low crude oil price

I still don’t get why Some Nigerians try so hard to display Canada or the west in general as a problem free nation(s). Yes the government of Canada can afford to send food baskets to its citizens and residents but Africans and Nigerians are also supporting one another in their own little way. I don’t even know the purpose of this video . Is the poster ignorant of the fact that most of the poor and needy in Nigeria don’t even have an address (assuming he’s suggesting that the government Should post food items to homes of the needy). Not every solution effective in a Canada will work effectively in Nigeria .
