Princedapace: Bro, I'm so tired. Some times I wish I can just stop being a Nigerian. These Nairaland and Nigerians turn everything a fight especially between igbos and yorubas. I was even thinking that they would look into the fact that southern Nigeria does almost eveything that generates money for Nigeria but still, northern Nigeria takes the greatest share, rather, igbos and yorubas started tackling them selves. I think this issue is now spiritual. Omo, what is this? Well, they also contribute tremendously to our internal economy. They help us balance our trade to some extent. Let's learn to appreciate their impact too while encouraging each other to do more. For once, let's Africans live together as one and brothers. Let us stop this whole madness of downtalking other tribes. We're all blacks. And we're one. Just to remind you, northerners make up well over 70% of our local agricultural produce. Despite the killings in the north, these people still religiously go to farm, and some of them even pay the ultimate price in the process. Many have been kidnapped, yet they won't stop going to the farm. Or when was the last time you went to the farm? I can confidently say that all the beans being consumed in Nigeria comes from the North. Imagine that. Let's just appreciate each other is all I'm preaching. Let's learn to love and accept each other for who we are and learn to coexist peacefully. |

franchasng: Most Southeast guys don't send money directly to their parents or relatives in Nigeria, they sell the hard currencies to their Igbo friends and relatives into importation and they use it to pay for goods abroad instead of sending directly, so most Igbo Diaspora remittances return back to Nigeria as goods...while the importers send naira to their relatives. This is one major reason FOREX outflow restriction by CBN under Buhari govt. didn't affect Igbo importers and other Nigerian importers who know how to connect to Igbos abroad.
Lastly, a lot of Igbo guys abroad are dissatisfied with Nigeria's current situation under APC/Buhari and many have stopped investing back home, another reason for low remittance from Igbos abroad.
The whole world know that Igbos make up the highest population of Nigerians living abroad, even in strange countries you have never heard before except maybe online lol, you too know this. I was anxiously waiting for someone to come up with this and you gracefully did.... I laughed.... So when you buy goods with FX made from abroad and ship them into Nigeria, that doesn't count as remittance abi? And under what header/name tag will they call that sort of international transaction? |

Yugoslavia247: So the ones that were all righteous and poor nko.
Many people need exposure in this forum.
Go to villages you will see many people who never did anything bad to deserve being poor but they have their hopes high.
Many children who were reckless in their youth never ended poor. Especially those with solid foundation.
Hypocrisy is when you take an innocent hardworking old man pics and then accuse Him of leading a reckless youth life.
You might work and save up in your youth but end up poor. How about natural disasters, terminal illness and unforseen circumstances. What about those who were spiritually manipulated. Or those who were duped or defrauded. What about those who faced business downturn and ran into debt.
Be stuopid but know when not to be a nuisance.
Many became Rich by luck as Tony Elumelu claimed it was luck. Some did not need to work hard. Crypto billionaire are a clear example. The same things you do some did little and became Rich. Some people will live a reckless life and still end up being Rich on their dying bed. The drug barons, gun runners, politicians and so on.
Don't mock people who were hardworking at their old age and blame them for being reckless.
Some sold their wealth to save a family or brother.
Haven't you heard. Please just be reasonable. Finally, an adult with matured reasoning is passing an important message across. Life is not bed of roses. Far from it. Most people think it's by hard work or being smart. The battle is not for the swift, except those whom the lord has made. |

What Agbaje pointed out is nothing but the truth. How will a bank executive resign her position and relocated to become a health care assistant and all you could do is to justify it by saying she earns a decent pay. What kind of life is she living there and how much does she earns? You are talking of fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram, those people running away from Nigeria are not even in there region of bandits and Boko Haram, these are Southerners using Boko Haram as the excuse to japa only to end up with lower standard of living, while those who are directly affected are not even considering japa as an option.
People tend to use exchange rate to measure wealth, but you are wrong. Exchange rate is not and indices to measure standard of living. You measure standard of living using what is called PPP(Purchasing price/power parity). That is what is used to determine standard of living not exchange rate. There are people in Nigeria here who have never touched dollar or pounds in their life ,but have higher standard of living that so many of their counter parts abroad.
Quit this your japa mentality and build yourself here, there is honey and gold in Nigeria here. You can't convince someone like me to japa,I will rather go there to invest and return home just to spread my business nothing more.
I stand with Agbaje. Opinion is like nose. We all have one. I don't think it's proper to attack the OP for his stance on what Agbaje said. That's his/her opinion, and it's not expected to be the same as yours. If Agbaje's kids are not schooling or raised here, I don't think he's got the moral compass to tell anybody what to do with his or her life. |

Politics › Re: Alaba International Market Closed After Clash Between Traders & Thugs (Video) by Ade3131: 12:10pm On Oct 22, 2022 |
Cantonese: Ade, we are saying the same thing.
See, the unions do not have the chairman alone making pronouncements of such magnitude, without their members input.
The market unions basically run the same way, but some are more unified than others. Government has its role to play in terms of security, but the rest, which have to do with compliance fall on the traders and unions.
The ASPAMDA case largely had to do with disagreements among the unions, leading to government intervention.
Except for robberies before now, Alaba market has been a very peaceful place to buy and sell. The unions work well and there is good collaboration with Ojo local government, despite the extortion.
Truly we have a systemic failure. Government seems to abdicate its responsibilities. Part of government's responsibilities is the provision of security and adequate infrastructure for ease of doing business.
Alaba is a market started by a group of Igbo traders in 1979. They relocated from Alaka to that area and over time, that market has become what it is today. The same goes for Trade fair market, relocating from Lagos Island. All the traders there carry out their businesses with happiness and do not want to be molested. The problem lies with the touts, who just want to make life unbearable. Ironically a lot of them have shops within the market.
The challenge also is exacerbated by the security agents, who have made their uniforms, their personal shops. Those who should provide security, are the same people involved in the business of extortion.
The traders have always paid charges, but these charges have been multiplying. With the Nigerian challenge, a lot of traders have been sent packing. Note that I have not included government taxes here.
Government can make the difference by intervening. Government needs to collaborate with the market unions, the Oba, the legion of touts (since touting appears like a legitimate trade in Lagos) and the security agencies. The market unions only insisted that government must call them all to order before they can call for the opening of the place.
Alaba case is not like Ladipo, where government has severally closed because of its dirty habit. It's not 100% but its but it's not dirty.
The proceeds are very huge. They make over N100 million daily extorting traders. Government can have something done and the revenue converted to government use for the better life of everyone.
Let's get government to do the needful for a better Lagos.
Cheers. On point. Cheers. |

Pipefitter: Way to go, I wish something like this will be replicated in Lagos, will save lots of lives.. most people think the issue at alaba market is Igbo versus Yoruba thing, well, it's not. It's actually traders (Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and other tribes) against extortionists driving away customers The most objective and issue-based comment I've read regarding the violence at Alaba Int. Market. May God bless you and yours. |
Politics › Re: Alaba International Market Closed After Clash Between Traders & Thugs (Video) by Ade3131: 9:33am On Oct 22, 2022 |
Cantonese: The traders union in Alaba market is very strong, especially inside the main market. If Lagos State government says open the market and the union does not give the go ahead, it will remain shut.
The union authorised the closing of the market just as the government played its own part to avoid further damage.
This fight was long coming. They have had similar fights in Ladipo and Balogun markets several times. None yet at the trade Fair. It's only traders who feel the pain.
Government has to look into the matter. The extortion is unbearable for everyone.
Before now, what you could import at the rate of $400, you get at the rate of $750. Now you need to source for more naira to pay for your goods. On arrival at the seaport, tariffs have increased along with VAT. You pay shipping company and terminal owners. Customs do their own. You face transporters and then set off to the market. You encounter customs at Berger and Festac. You encounter NURTW and other touts on the road. Finally you get to Volkswagen where you pay that disputed bulky amount.
For youths here who are so childish and cannot reason properly, ask yourselves who pockets those monies go to. They are not used to fix roads or develop the state. Alaba roads are very terrible.
When the trucks pass Volkswagen, they encounter the local government team in front of their offices and then the "police armoured tanker" toll gate. Other ones wait as the truck progresses to the importer's warehouse.
These things are killing.
How can we have a country like this with crooks in different guises? Customers on foot are scared to get to the market because area boys are waiting to collect ground rent on the way out of the market.
If we truly want a better country, we must rise against every form of injustice and overcome tribalism.
Whatever happens in Alaba market, affects those others outside the market. Prices are determined there. Most of your electronics are sourced there. Your corner shop in your area where you purchase your generator, get their supplies from there. Now that the market is closed, prices would definitely rise, as dealers do not have where to restock from.
Hopefully government can get it sorted out quickly and the unions open the market. To be candid, your points are valid and to some degree, 100% true. My question is premised on the claim that it's the market chairman that closed the market whereas in the real fact it is the constituted authority of the state that made the call. And to clarify you on the only point I think you missed a bit. If the state government decide it's time to reopen the market and the market chairman insist it remains closed, the state have the powers to nullify the authority and constitution that brought such chairman into office and appoint a sole administrator for such market, pending when a new election will be conducted, and consequently go on with their plans to reopen the market. The guys in ASPMDA will explain how this works to you because the immediate past president of ASPMDA was an administrator appointed by the government before they did election about 5 months ago or so. Like I said earlier, your points are valid just that we all know the shit of a country we find ourselves in. Our problem here is systemic failure. So many non-state actors and institutionalized corruption. I don't know how we're ever going to come out of it because if they make you the governor of Lagos state today, I can bet my left balls that you won't end it too, because the proceeds from this avenue are unaudited and unaccounted for, yet the remittance comes in daily. |

Peter Obi too knows this that's why he would hardly talk without pointing to Singapore, Malaysia or China. If what is happening in Akwa-Ibom is happening simultaneously across all the 36 states of this country, I assure you that it's going to be a matter of months and not years before this country return back to the part of greatness. You might as well wake up one day and say the the car is an aeroplane, or call garri, rice - in sincerity. Calling a car an aeroplane or over hyping something is not in my DNA. You should infact be checking yourself for that bcuz that's what you lots do online about Peter Obi's achievements. The man has done well for himself and his family - there's no questioning that, but to grade his political achievements as 'first-in-class A' like his supporters do is an insult to people's intelligence and our collective good as a society. To those of us who still have our objective thinking hats on, he achieved a transparently-run government while in office, Yes. Kudos to him on that. He also improved on education. Absolutely true. Aside that the other things he bragged about his achievements in office is prudency. But qualitative governance is far beyond those. Even Peter Obi himself knows this and that's why he doesn't have a formidable achievement to point to in Anambra other than happenings in Singapore, Malaysia or China. Quality governance is about effective people-driven policies. Policies that works for the common good of the people irrespective of status or tribe. That's what you see manifesting in those countries he often sight as examples. This will be my last response to you anyway. Good luck to you and your candidate. |

All policies he brought are for Alpha Beta, then ask who collects allocation and stuff from Alpha Beta, do the maths.
Bye bye. See how quickly you wrongly assume I'm a Tinubu or APC supporter. One of the fundamental issues I have with people who're party affiliated or worship political candidates. To start with, I don't even have a voters card...my reason? There's no politician in Nigeria at the moment who's credible enough to get my vote. On election day, I enjoy my holiday and indoor life by planning and strategizing how to survive another calamitous 4 years that people like you are queuing up to vote into power (which in essence should be voted into office but you folks vote them into power). Having cleared your doubts that I'm for any candidate, I'll like to revisit the claim that you made about Peter Obi's achievement while in office as Anambra State governor. Like seriously you mean he achieved anything? That goes to show how lowered the standard of qualitative governance is in our present day society. How many foreign investments did he brought to his state that year that's still functional today? How many modern real estates did he built to solve the high cost of housing issues in his state? How many world class entrepreneurs (not importers) did grow from his business-friendly policies he made while in office? If he's truly great as you guys have painted, how come his tribesmen haven't relocated their businesses to Anambra state? I mean, the state ought to have been an investment heaven for businesses to thrive in but hell no, his people kept moving into other regions (not just Lagos) in droves, yet you come online and see them calling their region a paradise. I know for a fact that Nigeria is the easiest people to govern. We don't ask for too much and that's why it's easy for people like you to mix it up and say he achieved a lot as a governor bcuz he constructed 2 asphalt driveways in rural communities and built schools and see to those school being efficiently run - credits to him for those. Aregbesola of Osun state did just that but we still score him extremely low bcuz we know down west that good governance stretches beyond just that. To remind you again, I'm totally apolitical. I don't support any party, I don't have a voters card and will not have for the foreseeable future until things change in the right direction. |
