kaluxy007:We use even 1950s books in 9ja schools, how do you expect the English to change? ![]() |
Primenet:Because it's the only other high office with prestige that voters can get you into. It's now a scrapyard for old and TIRED governors and ministers. A sleeping Chamber. ![]() Ok If there was no limit to governorship term, no governor would willingly leave it for ministerial or NASS. Look carefully. Politicians leave FEC and NASS to contest for Governorship: Fayemi, Woke and many more. Governors are chief executives of States. They get to appoint commissioners and heads of parastastals, prepare a budget, can impose curfews, sign bills to become law. In fact governors are mini-presidents. Ministers can be fired at any time. Governors only by the electorate, HoA or the courts. A governor can siphon billions without breaking a sweat. No comparison at all. |
Hmmmmm |
You need to go back to our faulty foundation. We are not at peace with ourselves. We were different people, linguistically and culturally. Nigeria or English has not been a uniting factor. Under GEJ, Southerners were his most bitter critics. Instead of constructively working with him. The North has a set agenda since Ahmadu Bello days. The various Southern tribes cannot even boast of a tribal agenda, let alone one agenda. The North were able to play two brilliant minds SLA and Pa Awo against each other. Zik & Awo could not even work together. As it stands, strong largely autonomous regions and a weak FG would be the best way forward. But I cannot see that happening soon. So the political elite will keep using their tribal base as a weapon, sowing more discord. |
BarryX:Dude I think, going it alone, most Edoid languages will decline naturally. There must be a collective effort while maintaining the distinctiveness of each language/dialect. Increasing urban environment means English and pidgin will keep increasing in use. Fewer grandparents get to see their grandkids often now. We are also increasingly having mixed ethnicity marriages. Where teaching kids two native languages at home become difficult. I like to listen to Urhobo, Isoko and even Itsekhiri music. It's one way of getting used to the sounds of languages. Chief Sally Young's very clear diction is quite good. So is late Johnson Akpalako's Isoko. I may not be able to learn these languages, but I hear words in Urhobo/Isoko that old people used to say in Benin language 30 years ago. They were in their 80s and above. Oghene, Kokodia and many more were commonly used then. Not anymore now. Increasingly, languages from same family grow apart over time. Like Old Norse/North Germanic derived languages like Norwegian, Danish & Swedish. Written Norwegian & Danish are very close, but surprising different when spoken/pronounced. Written Norwegian & Swedish are not too close, but pronunciations are quite close. Quite weird how related languages can divert. I believe these languages have to mutually re-enforce each other. or face massive decline. Even if orthographic reform has to be done to make learning/writing easier. There needs to be new words added to describe development since the past 30 years in IT/tech/social media, medicine, science, economics, business, etc. |
Babythicksme17:Not necessarily true. Many runs girls did it out of hardship. Many were not necessarily opening their legs more than girls with several regular boyfriends but do not consider themselves runs girls. They were just very skilled at getting money from men despite giving them the barest minimum. They were probably also plotting their way out of poverty/runs much earlier in life. Through being charming towards men. Those same manners are important when hooking up men and even seeking/getting jobs. By understanding the male psyche better. Whereas some of the so-called decent girls can be on their high horse, arrogant, have less charm than an unripe plantain. Quite often, in a environment where your history is unknown, your history is often irrelevant. But what you make of the present and the future. Not having being a runs girl doesn't mean you will automatically make a good wife. If a girl was officially not a runs girl but has dated 10 to 25 men at the age of 25 to 30, my sister you are not any different. ![]() At the end whether to be a runs girl or not is individual choice. If being a runs girl is passport to hooking up rich men, it's never too late to give it a go. ![]() To each Musa, his gate. ![]() |
Very interesting. |
toriweymeksense:It's actually Jesus is my refuge. Other similar names are Igbinosa/Igbinoghene meaning God is my refuge. Igbinoba means Oba is my refuge. Several Obis of Agbor even used the title Igbinoba or Gbenoba. Igbineweka meaning Oba Eweka is my refuge. In naming it's not " fight" as people insinuate. Names are not often literal but philosophical. Reflecting circumstances: family, conception, pregnancy and state of mind or condition of parents at birth. |
yinchar:Then that will increase kidnapping. Only after the funds are cleared before they release the victims. Nigeria needs a completely new system. Things do not work in Nigeria like in other places. Maybe a secret additional code ATM owner must add to clear the funds. But unknown to armed robbers. If PIN is xxxx, then extra yz must follow to authenticate. But the machine won't prompt you to add it. Yet the machine senses that the missing extra figures means something is wrong. Though the funds will seem moved. But without the secret extra code it will be held for days. But banking insiders may leak the secret to armed robbers too. Something unique needs to be done. Biometric won't cut it. Because robbers will make victims do everything. Unless biometric that senses physiological stress too. And hold up the funds for days first. |
Corporate2020:Apparently Abacha was extremely smart. With a memory like an elephant. Despite not being privileged to have a great education growing up. I guess playing second fiddle to IBB for so long played on his mind. Maybe at one point, he didn't believe he could become C-in-C anymore. I guess as C-in-C, knowing his poor health, he probably was in a hurry to loot. But I think he was still more principled than IBB. IBB was just shifty and crafty. When you play too smart, you end up playing yourself. That is how after 8 years without being overthrown, IBB could not manage a successful transition to an elected civilian government. Not even to himself as civilian president. Something Abacha was on course to achieve had he lived a year or so longer. Abiola allowed himself to be played by Abacha. Who sweet talked Abiola just to buy time and consolidate power. |
Before people get carried away, is the money for everyone? If a person earns C$ 42,000 or C$ 52,000 annually, what would be his income tax annually in Canada? And VAT rate on goods? You must consider the high taxes and high cost of living in these places. Especially in places like Toronto and Ottawa. |
karkinase:Something people forget. Even if we shared daily oil and gas proceeds to each person's account, it will be little still. We missed the chance to diversify and build a huge taxation base like UAE previously relying on oil has done 25 to 35 years ago We are a poor country. All we have is potential. With our biggest resource being human. Western countries, Japan, South Korea and lately China have relied on brains to become what they are now. |
Black is the original colour of mankind anyway. No biggie. |
ignis:Yet, but in most countries they are non-Commissioned officers. They are equal to sergeant major. Th highest rank of NCO in fact. They are Enlisted officers like similar ranks like petty officer/chief petty officer in Navy. But in some other countries, they are the most junior Commissioned officers. But that's mostly then called Chief Warrant Officers. These are commissioned officers. I think with the NDA system we have now, Second Lieutenant is the most junior commissioned officer now. Without NDA or Short Service recruitment for professional graduates, progression in the military is very slow. |
gregyboy:Not entirely. There is "Amamieson Aimiuwa" on the logo too. Which is also the name of a palm tree the Oba symbolically climbs on the way to coronation during the ten days period. Oba has even given scholarships to kids able to recite long praise poetry in Benin Language. The new compulsory Benin Language in schools is Oba's initiative. See link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8KQIUpO2sw Sure we can all do more. For now, our women are the biggest problem. It's women who largely raise kids. But our women attend churches largely run by non-Benin people in Benin. Many such people demonise our culture. Paint our culture as pagan. For two main reasons (1) to cut our people off from their tradition in order to control them to get tithes. (2) Revenge over historical supremacy over them. There are hidden battles going on. You get to see it on social media in tribal fora. |
CollinsWeGlobe:Was 800 Euro given to everyone throughout EU really? By whom, ECB in Frankfurt to impose a uniform amount for every EU country? Do those still at work also get that money? Which categories including you are not qualified to get the money? I hear from Nigeria that everyone is getting free money abroad. They forget that certain types of professions like essential workers still just do the jobs as normal. Even working flat out right now and not getting any extra cent for free. People also forget that 800 Euro is not much in some countries depending on cost of living. Won't even pay for monthly accommodation be it rent or mortgage for many people. |
It's a big problem o. Because even modern Benin kids do not learn Benin Language, non Benin born and bred in Benin will speak their language but cannot speak Benin. Oba Ewuare is pushing for Benin Language to be compulsory in schools. It officially is compulsory now. Hope it's done properly. In the past I met Igbo and other tribes born and raised in Benin who all speak Benin like native language. With more cultural and historical awareness of parents, it will get better. Art is really a good medium. Music, Bennywood films, etc. |
Dude, you had no experience with ladies before you met her. You also seem to have been cocooned a bit. She was always a fake ass girl, depending on you to finish her degree. I am shocked by how much discrimination exists within Igboland. Especially against Ebonyi people. Dude you deserve a better girl and a better MIL than them. If you do not meet another good girl before you go abroad, do not worry. Maybe it's your fate to marry abroad. You will go abroad without any baggage behind at home. It will give you enormous freedom. Forget about the money you spent on her. You Will probably remain financially better than her always. |
valirex:Thanks. But fact is Yoruba wanted a rallying point. Claiming a common Oduduwa ancestor was a very attractive option. Today every tiny Yoruba chiefdom claims descent from Oduduwa. This is not possible because Oduduwa lived only about 900 years ago. Although of late they have seen the weakness of that position. Now trying to change that a bit. Some Yoruba Obas are now writing books. Invariably claiming seniority over others. Like Ooni and Ugbo king Frederick. They are trying Whereas evidence shows people in current Edo, SW, SE and entire South have been there for thousands of years. Fact is Oduduwa entered Ife from the East. He was very imposing, gifted and had something special that made Ife people make him their ruler. Is it not feasible that such an figure came from an already well structured, organised monarchical society? It certainly looks like he was a prince groomed for kingship in his homeland as it was and still done in Benin today. Princes are groomed for the role from birth. While that may not be an evidence on its own but it lends support to the Benin history and the great administrative and leadership skills that so impressed Ife people. Now regarding Oba forging the story in 1960s, read my old posts. All is there. In fact the book outlining Ekaladerhan story was completed in 1933. Oba Akenzua was a prince then and his father Oba Eweka's secretary. Is a lie that the prince does not see his father. Just to quickly say so. Just many of the ancient myths surrounding Oba when Oba was never ever seen by most Benin people outside Benin City. The prince read the manuscript of Dr J. U. Egharevba to Oba Eweka. Despite Oba Eweka's reservations, there was no proper Benin history book by a Benin man then. But Oba Eweka passed on later that year. So Oba Akenzua was not even Oba yet. In Benin the crown prince is basically seen as a chief or ruler of a "village" called Uselu. Although grown to conglomerate with Benin City over the past two hundred years. The prince has no power over Edo national affairs any more than the other 6 kingmaker or better called Kingcrowner chiefs in his category called UZAMA chiefs. So he couldn't have cooked up a a story by a historian with a PhD, while still a prince. Some even write here that it was Oba Erediauwa who made up the story in the 1970s. But he only became Oba in 1979 with lots of inheritance, liabilities, ceremonies and lots to take care of. He had no free time writing stories for the next year or two. So which publication did Oba Erediauwa release in the 1970s? People peddle lies without even checking facts. Yes the West actively discriminated against non Yoruba in Western region. For example Awo elevated Olu of Itsekiri to Olu of Warri. Remember what is now Delta state was called Warri Province then. It caused protests from Urhobo, Izon, Isoko, Anioma, etc. It was only resolved when name of the province was changed to Delta. Otherwise it would imply that the Olu of Yoruboid Itsekiri was ruling over all of Warri province. Instances of tribal discrimination abound. So Oba Akenzua led others like Anioma, Urhobo, Izon already equally fed up to leave Western Region in 1963 referendum. Note that many English speaking people of Cameroon today were part of Eastern Nigeria then too. They had a referendum to join Cameroon too and they left. |
Mrpsly247:Really? In a country struggling to pay 30k salary monthly? What if he's testing the waters? If nobody raises dust now it will be 10 billion next week. |
Wait o, how many molecular labs has he started? How many new isolation centres have sprang up? How many patients treated and discharged? How many tons of supplies given to the needy at what total cost? |
The cases are way higher. Nigeria has a very young population. Most will not even show any symptoms but can spread it to elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbours. We can still speed up testing and contact tracing. Soon it will be impossible to do so. When that happens, na everyman for himself. Mortuaries will stop accepting corpses. Yes, it's could get that bad if we do not get very serious with this. FG must transparently deploy huge amount of money to cushion pain of lockdown imminently. |
Nancydearie:Well, those who promoted Buhari knew his weakness. They thought they could exploit his weakness to advance their own cause. But suddenly Daura & Kyari hijacked it. Even to the dismay of Aisha Buhari. Even Daura seems distant for a while now. Moguno will be vital now. The Lagos squad will see more wiggle room now. But the next cabal squad might be worse than the previous. 9ja never fails to spring up surprises. |
DominusPrime: ![]() They will add Wike, FKK, Fayoshe, Timi and anyone who criticizes their darling Buhari's regime as the cause. |
Well, he said what we always knew. Messi is ahead. BUT huge respect to Ronaldo. He doesn't quite have the mercurial talents of Messi, but his work ethics, discipline, versatility, determination and hunger for a new challenge took him a few levels higher than others with comparable talents. In fact it's the only reason he catapulted himself into Messi's bracket. It's something anyone aspiring to any thing in life can emulate. Hard work, discipline and focus can take you almost as high as possible in the right environment. |
Mothers say all kind of things. At times out of frustration when we did not comport ourselves as kids. Parents always use own childhood to measure their kids behaviour. Forgetting that the world gets more permissive and relax going forward. When you're a parent you can better understand the pressures parents were under. Especially back then when parents had anything from 3 to 20 kids. |
irunoko:Well, it's a delicate situation. Often hard to prove after many years. If indeed it happened. What cannot be proven or substantiated legally didn't happen. See the Dakolo case. Going on to marry, became his queen and had a kid together makes all a bit more difficult. But if she complains in Canada, USA or wherever else they reside, and the authorities demand to question him, the man could face issues if travelling in the West. |
Wonder of nature. |
9jaRealist:Regular visitor. But still a visitor. In any case, I did not exclude those who always lived in Nigeria. My point remains same. Even those international community, you need strong recommendation from home govt and connections. You think he was the only smart person from Igboland or Nigeria who could do that job abroad? Fact is, like I mentioned, Nigerian politicians and appointees are a close-nit clique. His long ties with Kyari (the de factor president until his death) shows it. Anyway you look at it, he went from local elite to political elite. |
Johnbosco77:Sir, Jesus does not care about denomination. Just wish every human out there the same. That's what should make a Christian different from others. By following examples of Jesus who didn't discriminate against Jews, gentiles, Samaritans, money lenders, prostitute or anyone. Happy Sunday. |
Tedpgrass:My only problem is that these officials become dishonest. Or maybe they have been so privileged that they are totally disconnected from reality of the masses. Take the brilliant Onyeama for example. Since 1985, he said he spent 30 years abroad. Out of the last 35 years o. Then you return to Abuja to live in a sumptuous environment and travel abroad as foreign minister often. Even those that live locally, after rising up the ranks, they become totally disconnected. If they can't see that 90% of the people are struggling, who will lead reform? They hold the power, control state resources, apparatus of state and in league with the economic elite. |
One obvious thing is that in positions of power are all connected somehow. Irrespective of tribe or religion. Breaking into their circle is not easy. Quite telling that people who enjoyed high quality foreign education haven't done much to improve Nigeria. Most have stellar CV but mediocre showing in public office. I guess the weird structure and power game of Nigeria makes brilliant people unproductive in government. |
