soul_glo: What free will does a 7 year old whose parents sold her have? I mean I don't see how you honestly think you have made a point. Let me get this straight. Your logic is that since Nigeria actually has laws in place that makes slavery a criminal act then these children could not possibly be enslaved. Round of applause. And the forced generational labor part................. that's just hogwash. You even made up your own definition. If there is no forced generational labor then it cannot possibly be slavery?
You made the comparison to slavery. I just showed you that the idea is nonsensical. Making a 7 year old go to work is not the best idea, but its not slavery. The parents did consent, and the child can choose to stay or not once he is old enough. And most househelps do end up leaving, usually when they are old enough to start thinking of starting their own family or a trade. So, go ahead and show me how this is comparable to raiding villages, selling all the men and sending them overseas where they and their forbears will be slaves for another 400 years. I really want to hear this one.

If there is no forced generational labor then it cannot possibly be slavery?
Nice try taking me out of context. Like I said, what makes slavery bad is not just being taken against your will, but those that come after you must do the same thing you did. There are white Americans who were indentured servants, some treated just as bad as slaves. But you know what, their next generation got to taste full freedom. I'm sure you can see the difference today. So again, claiming househelps are slave is silly.

Again, I want to hear how you arrived at the conclusion that househelps Nigerian style are synonymous with slaves shipped over the atlantic. Seriously, I do.
FamilyRe: Are You Sending Your Housemaids To School? by birdman(m): 2:03pm On Nov 08, 2013
soul_glo: Funny this is the exact same response that white supremacists use in defense of slavery. Blacks got shelter and food. If they were left on their own other people would have lynched them without the protection of their "owners". So they got shelter, food, and security. How dare they complain
Lmao. I see you omitted the part about free will just so you could make your point. The basic evil of slavery is free will, NOT abject working conditions. The issue of slavery was never terrible working conditions, but the fact that you could not quit if you wanted to, and your next generation could never rise higher than you by law. So again, unless you can show me forced generational labor, stop denigrating the memory of slaves just so you can make a point. I understand when Europeans do it. When Africans do it, uhh...

Next thing I know you will be mentioning Hitler smiley

At least im righteous cheesy. Godspeed with the entrepreneurship thing. Your work is cut out for you

AjanleKoko: Hmm.
Pardon me, I can't even remember in what context I made that comment.
But as per my generalization. Well, yes, I used to be a lazy worker, up to a point. 6-10 years ago, my level of social awareness was probably such that I would join in the condemnation of Indian or Lebanese or Chinese workers and employers. Like most of you, I preferred to focus on the specks in their eyes, rather than the beam in mine.

But after progressing up the corporate ladder and making a foray into entrepreneurship, I can say with all sense of responsibility: Nigerians are lazy workers, 99% of the time.

We are very entitled, have little or no passion for anything we do, and are totally fixated on monetary gain. Most times we don't even pay attention to simple rote responsibilities, but would rather enforce our negative views and attitudes in the workplace.
The worst of it is, we are mostly cowards, and would not stand up for each other, or what we believe in, when we are working for these Indians or Lebanese, or Chinese people. All we do is skulk into corners and complain.
Nigerians complain about every type of boss, foreigner or Nigerian. I have come to believe that a Nigerian worker would only be happy if you paid a very good wage and asked very little of him by way of responsibility. If possible don't ask for anything, just pay them.
99% is an exaggeration, but what you described is not unique to Nigerians. If anything, the only person to blame here is you - you obviously are not doing due dilligence in your hiring practices.
CareerRe: Are Indian Bosses In Nigeria That Bad??? by birdman(m): 1:13pm On Nov 07, 2013
mrjingles: I noticed no one has called Indian bosses LAZY or UNPRODUCTIVE which is what counts in a private business. You may not like them but one thing you can say is that they are very hard working, unfortunately the average Nigerian worker comes with a sense of entitlement (some even feel entitled to steal their employers blind). You may call them mean and unkind but the office is not a place to find love and be cuddled, if you want that go home to your mother. Of course there is also the option to quit.

A dangerous culture of moaning whining and complaining has crept into our lives, Indians as a nation are DOERS, we are sliding into a nation of TALKERS. We moan and complain about the government, our leaders, our bosses, if not for all these "wicked" people our lives would be heaven. That's just a lot of BS, a man uses millions and tons of sweat to set up a business and some clown comes along expecting to NOT do his job and get paid? I will kick your bum! If you want a kind boss why not set your own business and handout big money for no work to your staff?
You are comparing a local population (Nigerians) to immigrant indians. There are lots of lazy and unproductive indians as well. Those indians will never travel outside their country. Its the same reason Nigerian immigrants are considered more hard working than the local black population of any country they travel to. Those countries only see the hardest working Nigerians and think we are all like that. Go check out india sometime - there are just as many, if not more backward, self-entitled people.

indianin9ja: No I didn't put whites on a pedestal, I said they're thieves and robbers so they could afford to be less careful with their money. They take the big pieces while we fight over the scraps. Whites generally didn't grow up in ultra-competitive environments where everyone struggled to survive. It shaped their mentality. Nowhere do I hint that whites have a genetic superiority over anyone, unlike what many racist whites and even many Africans think. I believe Nigeria has a saying where white people are wizards/magicians.
Dude read the post you made which I just referenced. I'm sure you were unconscious of it, but your true feelings came out in that post. I see you trying to dodge and add all kinds of weird logic that you never said in your original post. You see white bosses as one class, then everybody else below. Pure and simple. I repeat your post again.

indianin9ja: We're probably not as good as white bosses (we don't have such big margins to be generous; thieves and robbers can afford to be generous), but we're about the same as Lebanese, Chinese and other Nigerian bosses.
CareerRe: Are Indian Bosses In Nigeria That Bad??? by birdman(m): 4:53am On Nov 07, 2013
indianin9ja: Stop talking about things you don't know about. Indians judge each other mainly on religion, caste, origin, language, wealth but not on skin colour. There are many many poor light-skinned Indians and many rich Indians who are dark.

True, we prefer our women to be light-skinned, but don't African men want the same? Isn't that why both India and Africa consumes large amounts of skin bleaching products?
dude stfu. are you sure you are indian? skin color is huge among indians. I even had a really dark indian boss who around the time he wanted a promotion bleached, straightened his hair and re-took a photo for his work badge. It is still hilarious to see the old and new pics side by side. Africans DO NOT consume large amounts of bleaching products. There are biases, but we generally accept our blackness. In your case, color is an issue. You just like to hide it behind caste. Anyone who doesnt believe me can do a quick google of skin bleaching in india.

indianin9ja: We're probably not as good as white bosses (we don't have such big margins to be generous; thieves and robbers can afford to be generous), but we're about the same as Lebanese, Chinese and other Nigerian bosses.
See what you did there? As usual you like to put white on a pedestal and then diminish everyone else. At least I'm glad you admit to being stingy (in addition to being virulently racist)

FamilyRe: Are You Sending Your Housemaids To School? by birdman(m): 10:58pm On Nov 03, 2013
No mother gives birth and prays for the child to become a househelp. If you are one of the really unfortunate millions of Nigerians with no usable eduction or job, you have a few options

- find a wealthy relative(s) you can make regular trips to to get cash
- look for some relative with few kids who will take in your child for a few years
- send your child be a househelp to some "distant relative" until he is old enough
- watch your child waste away in front of you

So unless you can solve the poverty gap and create a large middle class, this problem is here to stay. And I don't understand those who insist you should pay for your househelp's schooling. Its admirable, but remember this is a essentially a business deal. The househelp is receiving a certain amount of money, probably low end in addition to having a roof over his head and food for free. I think this is a horrible way to waste a person's potential, but as long as no one forced you to sign up for it, all is fair.

Maybe a law specifying EXACTLY what a househelp must get on being hired would help. But I really wouldn't hold my breath in a country where even folks with good education are being worked to the bone with measly pay

FFK after a massive misyarn by Kalu, struck out at the entire igbo race
many of us had a long time ago concluded that FFK lacked a certain mental ability despite his educational pedigree
(afterall, one of the leaders of the BNP is an Oxford or is it Cambridge grad)
But that a 'modern', young man who happened to have been a minister of the republic could brood such shallowness and actually spew it was quite shocking

I can safely conclude that all igbos i know were instantly anti-FFK
interestingly, some yoruba's i knew (even some that had previously felt FFK was a mad man), were gloating. not all sha
Fastforward again to a month ago or thereabout..........
There are very few people who like FFK. Im not sure the dude is completely OK upstairs either - lucky for him he had a famous dad. A few people may have jumped on his bandwagon after it was perceived he was being attacked because of his ethnicity during the deportation saga. I bet those people jumped off when he started talking about Igbo girlfriends etc. Talking about your past encouters with someone else's wife in public is as low as it gets. I had no idea even FFK could be that crass

(like FFK, i can say i have had intimate affairs with yoruba ladies.. For example.......smiley)
so if that is the way it appears, no probs

i guess this is what ethnic defence and sensitivity is all about
Apparently the thoughts are unconscious then. Which I suspect is the case for several other threads on this same issue. I mean, why cant an issue stand on its own. Why is there an automatic need to juxtapose the aviation minister's wahala with another tribe. And why is that juxtaposition one directional. You are obviously not as "above the fray" as you would like to think. The fact is you on purpose muddied an issue of accountability with ethnic jingoism. My calling you out has nothing to do with being sensitive.

Intimate affairs abi? lol

alnaijiri: You pose a legitimate question. True, many if not most Islamic societies exhibit terrible dysfunctions, but they also showcase some of the good that Islam can provide: a family structure for children to grow up in, a deeply-rooted sense of shame and duty and above all, a society where people can be stubbornly courageous to fight for their ideals.

These traits that are prominent today are not the only ones promoted by Islam. For in its golden age (clearly documented not only by Islamic historians but also their neighbours), Islam was a force for reason, temperance, and creativity.

These traits coupled with a deep sense of responsibility, morals, and courage is enough to enliven any society.

False equivalence at work. Fashola has deported indigents back to numerous states all across the country without respect for tribe or 2nd public as you put it. To suggest this is a case of tribal interest over public duty makes no sense.

I also "like" how you have managed to generalize one article to extend over all Nigerians. More likely you already have an opinion, and found an example to support your belief which you can do easily. If you had no problems while Yoruba writers were attacking other govt officials, why do you have issues now? I guess we are all cool with the SW being a hotbed of activism only when it favors us. Bros, you too have a 2nd public you havent admitted to smiley

You can make an argument as to if Oduah's actions were corrupt or inappropriate. Fine. But enough of this back hand attempt to keep trying to rope in Yoruba into the issue.

ndu_chucks: My Yoruba brothers and my Igbo brothers need to stop thinking with their yansh and use their brains for once. Those who are ra ping you hail from both Yoruba land and Igbo land as well. You'll find them in every region of this country. I repeat, your anger is misplaced.

The truth of the matter is that you people share the same traits and bigotry you are accusing each other of. The same people who had no criticism for Fashola and or supported his unconstitutional deportation of fellow Nigerians to alaigbo, primarily because Fashola is a fellow tribesman, are now criticising fellow bigots who are doing the same thing by not criticising Oduah. Hypocrites ka obu.
Stop revising history man. The strongest lie is the one that mixes in a portion of truth. Fashola wasnt criticized when he deported indigenes back to Ogun and Oyo either. So not criticizing the Anambra deportation does not in any way make "the same people" as you put it hypocrites. If anything, they are consistent regardless of tribe

I hear you that we need to stop tribalism from clouding our judgement, but your attempt to make the problem look even-handed is flat out wrong. If you are going to call people out, have the balls to call them out without trying to generalize it away.

Mental slavery. it has caged the minds of Africans for hundreds of years now.
when the extraterrestrials(anunnaki) came to earth, they were all over earth in those days (Genesis 6:1-4)
the first mission of the Vatican sponsored evangelism in Africa was to get rid of any traceable evidence of extraterrestrials which were all over Africa before the coming of the missionaries. visibility studies has shown that those oracles/images of gods that were wiped away by the missionaries are actually caved images of extraterrestrial who visited Africa in the remote past and were being worshiped as gods by the primitive ancestors then. the bible was introduced to our ancestors and somehow they were made to believe that what they have been worshiping were demons and the biblical character is god with a capital G.

Just because you want to go your own way doesn't make you primitive. Sometimes its about standing on principle. I don't know about you, but marrying under-aged girls and trying to pass a law to make it legal is a deal-breaker for me. A whole section of the country, both progressive and otherwise voted unanimously for that bill. While I respect their right to vote their values in a democracy, you should be able to understand why I am hesitant to be part of a country where pedophilia almost became legal. Its one thing to respect all ethnic groups. Its another thing to imbibe destructive values.

Ogugua, I actually understand you and it is the wishful thinking of all Nigerians in diaspora that we become a united country. However what the diasporans should do is come to Nigeria and stay in an area that is not their region for a month and see how it goes.

There is a limit to what you can tolerate. Even you.
Keep deceiving yourself. You are living in your own head, making stuff up to justify your hate.. Every region in Nigeria has some strain of tribalism. The Southwest though is by far the most liberal. Hasua, Igbo, etc all settle in the southwest, own businesses and get so comfortable they identify with their host states just as much as their home states. If the SW was as nasty as you say, you would have left by now. Interestingly, you seem to conveniently ignore your brethren (and other Nigerians) being slaughtered any time there is some wahala up north.

Younger Nigerians in diaspora understand they world they live in. All the civil war and tribal baggage parents keep trying to foist on their kids melt in the face of reality: being a black man, of any ethnic group, anywhere in the world is hard. Division gets you nowhere.
