PoliticsRe: Why We Can’t Sell Petrol At 125/litre – Marketers by COMPAQ(m): 5:59pm On Mar 20, 2020
kelvincoll:
I saw it coming though.

If it were an upward review in prices, would you selfish marketers have retailed at the current price? u would have adjusted immediately.
That is why the damned thing should simply be deregulated to avoid this sort of thing. The reality though is that they have a point and have done nothing wrong. In my short time in the US, I have observed that when prices rise, petrol stations adjust prices upwards quicker then when prices come down.

I will expect they will retain the price, save and use it to subsidize in future, rather than coming back later to tell us when the price goes up that the subsidy is not sustainable.
This might cruelly have been a sensible alternative. However for me, they should just simply deregulate the market.

Another pointless political move by the government.

The current low oil price presents a fantastic opportunity for the govt to do away with the subsidy regime for good. But instead, they choose to still modulate / control and peg the price. What then happens when oil price rises again?
You got it spot on. The FG missed a golden opportunity in 2015 and they are throwing away another opportunity now. Instead of announcing a reduction in pump price and fixing the price, it should be announcing a complete deregulation of the market.

The truth is that as with the subsidy regime, this reduction benefits the middle class who have cars more because transporters will likely not reduce bus fares. They will just pocket a higher margin.

And what happens if crude should hit $65again? Does the price go back to N145? Or does it go to the commensurate price of N200?

The FG should deregulate the damn thing and let the significantly higher efficiency of the private sector take over. When did we ever have a fear that diesel would be scarce. It was not possible because its a deregulated product. Since kerosene was deregulated, I have not heard of it being scarce!

This is a stupid political move meant to pander to voters. We need a government that can take the hard decisions for the Long term benefit of the country.
PoliticsRe: Senate Mulls Naira Devaluation, Subsidy Removal Over COVID-19 by COMPAQ(m): 11:15am On Mar 18, 2020
GamalNasser:
Which subsidy ? I thought the lying Major General said he was under recovering ...But with price of crude oil below 30 dollars per barrel what subsidy are we talking about ? They should just say the want to increase fuel price so they can have what to loot as usual , all other countries are mooting fuel price reduction and satanic APC is talking of removing subsidy , at 30 dollars per barrel there can be no subsidy in effect , what difference are they subsidizing at 30 dollars per barrel ...when Buhari can he claimed he had removed subsidy completely and took fuel price to 147 per litre till today he cannot show what he did with money he gained before he now claimed he was paying under recovery because crude had gone to 70 dollars per barrel and now it below 30 dollars the wicked man is still claiming he is paying subsidy !!!! Paying subsidy on what ?

In 6 years the failed man has not fixed a single refinery , has not improved electricity , has not stabilized the naira and now he wants to add a new fuel tax under the guise of removing a non existent subsidy ..there can be no subsidy at 30 dollar per barrel!!!!!
I think what he means is deregulate now (remove subsidy), so that when crude prices recover, the price of petrol will be determined by market forces, like diesel which i support. Crude is slowly becoming valueless, yet we waste it on the middle class with their 2 and 3 cars. If you dont have a car, you benefit like 5% from subsidy. But if you have a car, you benefit like 80%, so its clear that its the middle class that benefit.

For once I agree with FFK!!!

Public electricity does not work not because we use generators!!! We use generators because public electricity does not work!!!

All these arguments that there is a cabal of generator sellers that does not allow electricity to work is false. Electricity does not work because we have a useless, corrupt, incompetent government with zero will to get things done!!
PoliticsRe: Expected Petrol Pump Price Drops To N114.53 Per Litre by COMPAQ(m): 3:59pm On Mar 12, 2020
if you guys expect petrol prices to drop, why are you then so against complete deregulation, which would have ensured a price drop?

If FG has been subsidizing Nigerian's when the going was good, then Nigerian's should subsidize FG now that the going is bad and FG has significantly lower revenues. If I were the FG, I wouldn't reduce any price!!

It's either we want deregulation or not!! There should be no eating the cake and having it as well.

As for diesel, it will come down in a few weeks. There is usually a few weeks lag between international price reduction and impact on the pump here in Nigeria because we import. Last time when crude prices crashed in 2015, diesel dropped to as low as N150 per litre.

The East West road is actually just Warri to Ikot Abasi (Eket Junction), and the truth is that current work done cant be much more than 50%.... $800m though is weird. N100bn sgould compleye the job.
Are you sure about that? i did think that East West road was all the way to Shagamu Interchange!

https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2019/04/09/fg-approves-n100bn-for-completion-of-east-west-road/

https://constructionreviewonline.com/2018/05/nigeria-approves-reconstruction-of-east-west-road/

From my online search, it seems that we are both a bit right and wrong, as it appears East West road is officially Oron to Warri. There is also supposed to be a section 5 from Oron to Calabar, but how it would cross the large water way beyond Oron to Calabar I don't quite know.

Though that buttresses our point as to what exactly $800mln will be used for. Eket junction to port Harcourt is spotless last I drove on it around 2016. port harcourt to before yenegoa has portions that were done and ok and a few portions remaining and from before yenegoa to Ughelli on to Warri was spotless as at then too. So what work are they doing?

PoliticsRe: Buhari’s $22.7 Billion Loan Spending Plan: $1.25bn For Abuja Rail, $500m For NTA by COMPAQ(m): 2:20pm On Mar 06, 2020
The other painful thing about this loan is that there is no clear plan to repay the funds. Left to me i would have tied the road projects to toll gates and then the revenue from the toll gates will by LAW be directed towards repayment of the loan. Also the revenue from mambilla power project would be directed towards paying the loan.

At this rate Nigeria 's future will be mortgaged because Oil, which is our major forex earner could very well be $10 in 20 years time as renewable energy continues to take over.Where will the dollars to pay all this come fromhuh

And as is typical of Nigeria, everybody around Buhari will just be nodding their heads and saying "yes Sir". Nobody will have the balls to tell him that unless there is very detailed and clear cut structure around this loan, it will not do us any good! The only safeguard is that a huge chunk of it will be executed by the Chinese i.,e railroads and Mambilla and to be fair, they do execute their projects under the Chinese Export bank projects.
PoliticsRe: Buhari’s $22.7 Billion Loan Spending Plan: $1.25bn For Abuja Rail, $500m For NTA by COMPAQ(m): 2:12pm On Mar 06, 2020
I disagree with most of the things there!!! For goodness sake why are we taking a loan of $500mln to digitize NTA!!! As far as I'm concerned NTA should be privatized. If Channels, AIT, TCV and other are surviving on their own and doing far better than NTA, why should we be taking a loan for NTA?

Even the east West road that's there for me is a fraud. Which east west road are they still doing that needs to be $800mln (NGN288bln!!!) East West Road is Eket Junction to Port Harcourt; Port Harcourt to Warri; Warri to Benin, Benin to Ore; Ore to Shagamu Interchange.

Of these, only Ore to Shagamu and Warri to Benin remain. Not sure that should cost N288bln. unless they plan to add Calabar to Uyo to Eket Junction to it then I can agree.

forget this images. Buhari is just playing cheap politics with this airport. I tell you, they will delay this construction until such a time that we'll be asking for just local airlines to just land there. Then the airport will be operational for just local airlines again and they will give one jargon about it not being ready for international flights yet and that's the end of it. Buhari will never make this airport international. Mark my words.
That's really shallow from you!!

mY PROBLEM with most of these things our Government do is that.....They don't provide alternatives to those poor people....They don't give them enough time...No single human face to their approach..they always carry out this thing as if the masses are their enemy..With the enforcers ending up sharing their wares among themselves...

Every law enforcement drive here is never for the sake of enforcing the law but for the benefit of a selected few and the enforcers are all OUT TO STEAL, KILL AND DESTROY.....

In developed nations Government exist to help and work for the betterment of the people and society....

Here Government especially this APCSHIT works to punish the people..They are always looking for more ways to punish and further compound the sufferings of the ordinary man in the street....
I'm tired of all these arguments of government not providing alternatives!! What alternatives should government be providing for illegal acts that should never have been allowed to occur on the first place? Look at the pictures of people trading over gutters. Eventually ask their waste and plastic bottles end up in the gutter, blocks it then causes flood.

At that point we'll all complain about government inaction and incompetence, but this is where it starts from.

Bonny in Rivers State has 24hours electricity and all buildings including shanties have power, because they use prepaid meter. Nobody has time for you if you like pay, if you like don't pay. Nobody has bypassed their meters.
Please do no use the utopic state of affairs in Bonny to judge the rest of Nigeria! The electricity supply is like dash and is not run in a commercial way as electricity distribution is not the daily business on NLNG.

First of all NLNG provided all the electricity and meter infrastructure in Bonny. The cost of doing that for a relatively small island is tiny compared to the multi billion $ investment going on at the LNG plant at the time.

Also, what they pay for electricity in Bonny is next to nothing.

The problem is, are Nigerians ready to pay Siemens prices?
Perhaps electricity shouldn't be as expensive as we think it will. I know someone in houston who lives in a 3bedroom apartment with 2 kids and pretty much all the modern equipment you'd expect - large TV, fridge, freezer, washer and separate dryer which is used regularly as you typically don't dry clothes outside abroad and yet the bill for the 2months I was there was $47 and then like $52 which is like N18k.

To be honest I was shocked. I thought it would be over $100 a month. Yet here I pay like N10k of nepa and another N30k of diesel cost a month.

I would gladly pay N25k for 24hrs light. That's just Bit more than dstv premium.

So how then can it be N28mln. For an accidented benz, if should be no more than N12 to N15mln

If the unaccidented gle on link below is $25k (N9mln), an accidented one this bad no fit pass $15k (N5.4mln)

https://www.texasdirectauto.com/for-sale/Mercedes-Benz-GLE/vehicle/4JGDA5JB7HA864329

If repairs is $5k abroad (which is unlikely cos most people fix in Nigeria for far less, plus $2k shipping and N5mln clearing and N3mln profit, it comes to about N16mln

To put it in perspective a colleague bought a very clean unaccidented 2018 GLC for N22mln complete last year.

#Poverty will drastically reduce if the following are done.

1. Change our mindset
2. Increase Minimum Wage.
3.Cut down public officers' salaries and allowances.
4. Gain 21st Century skills.
5. Provision of well paying jobs
6. Smart solutions for electricity and Water problem
7. Stop being greedy, selfish and self-centered.
8. Minding one's business

What other ways can we reduce poverty for ourselves and others? Any suggestions?
