We should all strive to do something to improve the current condition of our schools individually and collectively through alumni associations. It goes a long way towards improving academic performance and moral upbringing of the students. |
IlekeHD:Lol at our wonderful pastors. Some are great givers though. The group is not on Facebook etc. It's more of a private/personal commitment on their part to give back to society and appreciate Gods goodness. Probably at a stage they may wish to raise funds for the bigger projects in conjunction with the National Alumni body. It will be made public at that point in time. Thanks. |
IlekeHD:The focus is on a particular school. Those in North America/ Canada had successfully built a block of toilets, renovated a classroom block and donated computers and laptops to the school and the teachers. They also provided a borehole. Those are the ones I know. The current mission I referred to is being run by a group of about 50 reunited classmates resident in different parts of the world. They're pooling funds together and will soon pick a project from the list drawn by the school and the old students association. |
@Ilekehd You asked how we can improve on the educational system. I am aware of an alumni (set) group which came up with a way to harmonise the financial contributions and physical/moral efforts of classmates in Nigeria and the diaspora for effective performance and result. They started by setting up a joint bank account. It is managed by three people, two of whom are Chartered Accountants. The bank statements are made available by email to everyone as well as bank alerts through a WhatsApp group chat forum. The transparent bookkeeping system makes it easy for everyone to get along without grudges or fear of losses. Decisions are taken by majority votes on any issue. Discussions are mostly by email and WhatsApp to generate ideas and agree on projects and modalities. The diasporans had successfully constructed a building in the school and are now working with Naija based mates to work on a legacy project for the school. In addition, they are looking at a long term mentorship programme for the students and training/ facility support for the teachers. If many groups come up like this with the determination to succeed, we'll see drastic changes in Southwest schools. |
I also agree that the home videos and unfettered access to the internet has had an impact on the lives of the youth. The problem is there's little that can be done in that regard now. The boarding house system would have been able to reduce the exposure and effect but now most schools are day schools with large virtually uncontrollable population. When I visited my Alma mater with a view towards deciding on a befitting project by my set, I couldn't help crying. Oun to a ko ba fara sise fun ki tojo... Ise loogun ise.... Ile ti a fi ito mo, iri ni o wo. I wonder if they still read those motivating Yoruba poems. |
I've really enjoyed reading through this thread. God bless you Aare or CabbieAC, IlekeHD and others. . I'm deeply concerned about the serious deterioration of public schools. This generation of youths are not ready to learn and some parents are more focused on how soon and how much money they can make to uplift the family. That is why we have a lot of students who are part time agbero, okada and Marwa riders. They're more interested in what they make on a daily basis most of which is spent frivolously. As rightly stated before, their role models are motor Park chairmen, 'big girls' with questionable means of livelihood and their ilk. I remember a teacher who told me that her students said she should stop stressing them cos they dont need school cert to be successful. Their example - the deputy governor appointed by Adedibu! God help us.!! Many of the parents are also not as sacrificial as the old generation. The free education program seems to have brought about an entitlement/non-commitment mentality to our people. They prefer to fight the teacher who tells them to buy books- government should supply! I believe parents must be committed in some way towards the development of their children. It's a major driving force in the life of a child. It doesn't have to be expensive. 1000 per term per child in Oyo state was introduced for that reason. The parents need to be positively involved. Somehow, there must be total reorientation programme for our people. We also need the old technical colleges which was the alternative route for those not so keen on pure academics. However, the reality now is that those who really want sound education arrange for lessons or go to private schools. |
![]() Thanks Laudate. May God grant you more wisdom and bless your efforts in amazing ways. We continue to pray for greater awareness and a wonderful future for our young ones as we encourage them to be more patient and focused. So many wonderful opportunities abound for those who care to learn and dare. |
What more evidence does one need really of the embarrassing situation of today. How many deemed it fit to read the story? You get to hear comments like ' it's too long', 'its boring' ,'thats in the past'. Really? Even the kind of grammar I read here sometimes makes me wonder. That is after taking typo errors into consideration. Lets do ourselves a favour by reading biographies of successful men and women. Most of them started out without any undue advantage. They're many in our society. Meanwhile to learn and be entertained at the same time, those who care should visit the Nairaland Picture album thread. You won't regret it. |
laudate:You got it right! Nothing has ever really been easy. Women sold their wrappers and stuff to send their kids to school in the past. Maybe free education has rendered many lazy and dependent on government for everything. I remember classmates in University who genuinely hustled to see themselves through school. A guy used to wake up early to do alabaru for market women in a big foodstuff wholesale market and will be back to campus in time for lectures. I know many who overcame their challenges and obstacles and are big men/women today. They didn't wait for godfathers and " connection". When you raise your hand in a positive way, God sends helpers your way or shows you the way. It's unfortunate that most young ones spend more time analysing why they're not progressing than thinking of how to proceed and succeed despite the challenges. Impatience is not a good virtue for those who want sustainable success. Attitude, focus and determination make a lot of difference in our lives. |
Nice write up. Unfortunately those who should read and learn from it are more interested in tribal bashing threads, news on the Kardiashians and their ilk and all kinds of unrewarding ventures. Some will even be waiting for someone to summarise; they can't even read! If this doesn't get to front page, I won't be surprised, only worried that we're really losing it as far as the future is concerned. The settlement and entitlement mentality has taken deep root obviously. May we learn to do things the right way before it's too late. In all this, I sincerely admire the courage, creativity and initiative of some youth like Linda Ikeji, Tara Durotoye, Funke Opeke etc Young people should read the stories of successful Nigerians outside politics to understand that determination and initiative go a long way in achieving success. Attitude is indeed everything! |
It's been used as a police post for years. There used to be a patrol boat by the building. |
Wow! This is really surprising and sad. For those who dont like our public universities or whose children cant gain admission, our private universities are better and safer for young undergraduates plus most of them are cheaper. |

Did he falsify his declaration of assets or not? That is the main issue in my opinion and his lawyers should be able to advise him based on information available to them. |

Nice thread though not as rich as the deleted one. Ibadan is so large. Many areas are not shown here. Places like Iyaganku GRA, Apata/ Moor Plantation, Agodi GRA, Ashi, Akobo, Idi Ishin, Oluyole etc So many quiet and beautiful estates away from the red roof zones (the old city area). |
Nice one! He should introduce it to those at the big poultry markets like Onipanu, abule egba etc. It will be very useful to them and they will gladly introduce him to others for more sale's. He should have it patented promptly too. |
I feel sorry for him though I agree that his pension should be sufficient for his upkeep. One lesson learnt in this though is that it's wise to adopt a child when you're still fairly young if you don't have kids. It goes a long way in one's life especially in old age. |
I really don't understand why the rich Arab states can't help the refugees. Why are they not going to Saudi, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar etc? Why risk dying in the ocean in a bid to cross to Europe which shares no affinity with them? Christian Syrians probably see Europe as their beacon of hope but the Muslims i think will fare better in familiar territory with similar culture. It's really sad that there's so much turmoil generating this massive displacement of people. |
The Polytechnic story is surprising! Please I would like to know what happened to the former School of Nursing, Ikoyi and the former Eti- Osa Local Govt office on Glover Rd, Ikoyi. |
Hmmm! All is indeed vanity! |
Atheistan:You obviously didn't read through. I pray that an NGO will take up this unfortunate girls case and rehabilitate her. The boys need help too. It's so sad that rape and cultism has become daily news in Nigeria. |
Another is Toju Iwa Re Ore Mi. A poem on the superiority of character over wealth. |
The author is J.F. Odunjo of the Alawiye fame |
Best thing is to ignore fake news. Those who know there's abobaku should give us his name. Yeye bloggers that can't do simple research. ![]() |
False news! |
Nothing like Abobaku in this modern age. It's a VERY old tradition (not of Ife) which is no longer practised. Some people are just clowning over this fake news. No abobaku is missing and no one gets buried with the king. The Aderemi princes can explain better since they witnessed their father's burial ( late Oba Adesoji Aderemi). RIP Ooni Sijuwade. Condolences to the family and Ife people. |
Lies!!!!!!! |
Please beware of ants. Find out how to deal effectively with that. |
My major concern is the terrible state of the schools. Old and reputable schools are a shadow of them selves not to mention the new anyhow schools. Only private schools are okay. It's such a shame that schools like Queens School, GCI, St Annes and Loyola are now like agbero schools. Nothing near what they used to be and with disgraceful performance in most cases. Why not hand over some for better management like Tinubu did in Lagos? It created room for competition and upgrading of facilities. One thing I respect Amaechi for is his policy on Education. God bless him. Ajimobi needs to work on this. |
ArodewilliamsT:It's obvious and a great pity you didn't get the message. Can't repeat nor explain further unfortunately. |
