I am watching a series and in one of the episodes a couple goes to see a marriage counselor. She tells them that marriage is not about unconditional love but an agreement to show up the best we can. It is meant to challenge each spouse to bring out the best in them.

How useful is this kind of advice?

Why are these simpleton generalizing one person's experience to all women? Abuse is a mental control before it's physical. Women and men who suffer domestic violence do not enjoy it, they are trapped by it.
For that man to beat her in front of his mother shows that domestic violence is normal in his home. His mother probably got slapped around by his father.

This is a very sad story and if you can't help then it's okay to walk away but you don't need to belittle her and others who suffer.
