Siena: I'm sure contributions from any country's welcome. Although this thread was originally about the overall running costs of an automobile, the fuel consumption aspect will be helpful to all, regardless of where you live. This is more so if there are more than one contributors with similar cars, for the sake of comparison.Very true. Anybody can contribute. Even estimates from those living in Timbuktu are welcome. Infact, there's just so much to learn: -fuel consumptn figures, service routines, insurance costs, e.t.c. I'm beginning to realise that it seems some people may be servicing their cars too frequently (though i concede that some other factors, aside from a cunning mechanic may be responsible for this) & some hardly service at all.lol. It also appears that comprehensive insurance costs are not as high as some (no, MOST) people think they are in Nigeria. Also, a major aim of the thread is for intending car owners to know exactly what they are getting into and again, boundaries dont matter. I'll also appreciate if informed commentaries can also be given where necessary by auto experts on certain areas mentioned in the estimates provided. Siena is doing that already. Other car ''techies'' may also contribute, however, please lets be careful not to derail the thread. Thanks. Nairaland is for Nigerians everywhere and everywhere #unityindiversity ![]() |
Wallie: Here’s my attempt because I don’t really keep track of how much I spend on gas but the insurance and toll figures are accurate.$11,772 per annum excluding maintenance! I guess this explains why americans tend to offload their cars before the warranty expires (especially warranties exceeding 5 years). @Bolded, i think the annual costs should be higher, since u spend $6 a day x 5 working days x 52 weeks. No? |
''Government work''. As in Civil Service (preferably state) Why? She'll have enuf tym to take care of her kids at the begining, able to do part time MSc at school & still be efficient at work. In d begining, there's not so much to be done, & due to the fact that govt MDAs in Nigeria are almost always overstaffed, the multi-taskin is a lot easier. By the time she's advancing, comin up to Asst. Director, HOD, Director level, (where d work load gets heavier & d hours longer), the kids would (ideally) have grown & as such have less need for their mum....probably they'll be in d boarding house or smthn sef. By the time she becomes d head of an agency / even a Perm Sec (which can be possible if she distinguishes herself at work, & used her time wisely to improve her qualificatns), and she gets to spend almost 16 hrs at the office, the kids no go even send.lol. They'll probably be in Uni or may have even finished sef...maybe married. Hubby mite be complaining a bit tho, but by then, the marriage should have bn strong enough to withstand stuffs like that easily. Oh, & d perks attached to the position of P.S. / Head of an agency will make d long hours worth the effort ![]() Not every civil servant gets to the top o, probably due to age (late entry into the service = retirement may come too early), skills & qualifications deficiency, or other reasons. But someone who is quite focused n qualified may get to the top early. That said, me i fit marry any woman for any profession o, as long as she doesnt allow her career to overshadow her responsibilities at home, especially when the kids start arriving. Nanny or house elf (help ) no go raise my pikin for me abeg. Their job no go pass assistance...if necessary. |
@find out, thanks for ur response, as regards what you said concerning getting an emploment with LIRS or Lagos state civil service, ur so correct about those "2" points, I myself have been trying by best to enter LIRS but people having to telling exactly what u said @find out, pls apart 4rm the LIRS salary of 68k, do u have an idea if there are other allowances and bonuses paid, will it be worth it to leave a bank job and join LIRS, Thanks
Not sure about any other allowances o. Tho i hear if you are at the head office in Alausa, u MAY be getting some ''something something'' sometimes (maybe ''weekend money'' from ur boss n other stuffs like that). Oh, & i think u get a birthday cake each year too!lol. Well, leaving bank for LIRS. Its a tricky question. Coz some people live LIRS to the banks & some leave banks to LIRS (despite the attendant drop in pay). It all depends on what you want in life & what your career goals are. I'll try to answer this d best way i can. 1) Most banks pay more than LIRS for entry level. If you intend to continue working in an organisatn for a long time (i.e. You dont have foreign MSc plans or wish to start up a business), then i say go to LIRS. 2) If you are enjoying a relatively OK salary at the bank & u r saving a lot of it, u are njoying the job & u have a concrete back up plan should d bank decide to lay u off (can happen anytime), then you might stay. 3) If you are married & ur hubby is making some decent cash, then just go to LIRS. U'll know the value when u start having kids. |
Y'all should visit this thread, contribute , learn or do both. Thanks www.nairaland.com/1042877/how-much-spend-car-monthly |
From interior & engine pictures i've seen of the car, i think it is effectively more or less a Toyota Matrix. They seem to have the same engine & very very similiar interior. So i guess the relationship between both cars is similiar to what obtains between a Nissan Quest & Mercury Villager, Kia Rio & Hyundai Accent...e.t.c. Hope u get my point. I stand corrected tho.
Yup. I was right! Thanks to wikipedia. The Pontiac Vibe is just a twin brother (better looking IMO) of the Toyota Matrix. Same engine. Dont bother asking how reliable the Matrix is....coz it definitely is.lol. |
Siena: I'm not referring to the engine being sound or not. Sure it'll be running great. I'm referring to the fuel consumption, which will be on the high side. And yes, a 2,2L engine in a car the size of the '92 Camry is small, considering the modest power output. The 5S-FE motor produced 130 hp back in '94. 18 later, factoring in wear and tear, the same engine will be making circa 85 - 100 hp. This will give performance closer to a contemporary 1,6L motor. And this is where the same engine will be thirstier. I'm not expressing an opinion, it's simply a scientific fact.Actually, OP said he was about to spend 450k on a naija used (for 2yrs) '94 camry. How carefully used, i cant ascertain. 700k shld be able to get him a decent '96 camry i guess. That said, i cant fault ur above post. Reminded me of some secondary school Physics Mechanics calculations.lol. But then, the 1.6 too will have lost some hp too, making it slower then! Many of us are all learning here & you are one of our teachers . I hope OP has picked a few tips n hints from that post. I certainly did. However, in ur choice of alternative cars, i'm surprised you didnt mention the VW Jetta/Bora (1.6). I guess twas an oversight. No? Nywys, can u please comment on this car? I've been in love with for as long as i can remember but i hear stories of how like its siblings, Passat & Golf 4, they are plagued with electrical problems. I remember a thread on NL loong ago where the car suffered some serious bashing from users. Yeah i kno Naija mechanics play their part in destroyin these cars, but what's your own view on the reliability of this car?I blive this isnt derailing the thread sha. Oh, & i have a personal beef with the 98-02 corolla. Its a 16 yr old girl's car. Too small, too light & too expensive.lol |

Siena: Come on bud! It may well be cheap to by parts for, or repair. But a '94 Toyota Camry will NOT be fuel efficient, not by a long shot.Bros Siena, i beg to differ here o. The 92-96 Camry 4 cylinder engine is a 2.2 litre. Somehow, i dont consider that engine small. My dad's friend has a 93 Camry 2.2GL (the early ones without airbags) & that car is still as sound & fast as anything, even with AC chilling. & while the car will likely not be as fuel efficient as it was 18 yrs ago, i'll like to think that if the vehicle has been well maintained over the years, it will still be quite fuel efficient, fast & friendly to the pocket of a medium income earner. I'm speaking from very close observation. I believe a well maintained 1992 Honda Civic will be even more fuel efficient than a poorly maintained 2002 Honda Civic. That's why i agree with the point you and the other auto gurus here have consistently harped on here, which is : Vehicle maintenance is key to engine performance & efficiency which ultimately affects fuel economy. My uncle's 1989 Toyota Camry V6 2.5litre (not too sure of the engine size, sure its a V6 tho) is also one fast & surprisingly fuel efficient ride. Tho the car has been experiencing what i consider some ''wear and tear'' issues due to its old age, the engine is still very very sound. |
Ayoobscom: Mr one wife!as far as polygamy is concerned, in fora such as this, i prefer to sit on d fence....else i'll have to type a long epistle to state my exact position. That said, i hope i get married to one wife who would satisfy me so much in every way, that i wouldnt think of having another. But POLYGAMY IS NOT A BAD IDEA. We just have to face it. I highlighted d above post because i'm looking to see if anyone can produce a concrete rebuttal. There is a lot of sense in that post. We cannot deny the fact that the population of females are increasingly becoming more than males each day. All your friends who have given birth this year, if they are up to ten, how many gave birth to boys? Now, the many girls, who go marry them? |
Nice car. Factory left hand or converted?? & can we have interior pictures showing the gear.....& handbrake. Thanks. |
Donmeca: If we recycled waste the way we recycle news in this country, Lagos, Aba and Onitsha would be sparkling clean! For God's sake, this news is over 6 months old!!!Go to MET Limited, or any of those study abroad agencies that organise SAT, TOEFL e.t.c. exams, you'll find some there. Students who gained admission to ivy league schools even before they clocked 18. |
vinmol: Gbam... u said it all. i have exprienced it and i dont wish it for my enemyLol. OK, wait. U drive a car currently right? Maybe u even have two, & i assume they are in top condition. Maybe u drive one only on weekends sef. Now, u wish to upgrade & u want to sell one of them. Would i be wrong to refuse to buy? Going by your seeming generalization that all naija used cars are bad ![]() This is travelling (abroad for Masters) season. Many intending emigrants will sell their cars, some for even low prices, & its certain that some of those cars will be in very good condition. Yes, no doubt, many people sell because the cars are faulty, some bexause they think it will soon be faulty, but thats just it, some, not all. I still stand by my point which is : SOME (not all) naija used cars (depending on how well used), are BETTER than many tokunbo ones of the same brand. |
bajugbajug: Tank u all for ur sincere contributions. Av got an offer for a naija used 94 camry aka OROBO for 450k.I wil likely pay B4 nexwk.hope its a good deal?BEFORE YOU PAY, 1)How long has it been registered & how often does the owner drive it? 2) Do you know the car history with the present owner? & does he have other cars? 3) Have you gone to inspect the vehicle with a COMPETENT TRUSTED auto mechanic? Lastly, as you've read so far, while having a car is a necessity in many cases, you still have to consider your running costs as it affects your salary. So, if possible, reduce the amount of the co-operative loan you are taking, or invest the remaining 200-250k in an income-yielding venture. Btw, hope the camry is a 4 cylinder engined one sha. All the best. |
missdharmie: It is about 68k in LIRS. Pls how did this person apply? Not sounding pessimistic or discouraging you but you can only get into LIRS if 1) you know a 1st class or 2nd class Oba or politician or top civil servant 2) you know Fowler (the chairman). there are always exceptions tho, but i assure you those exceptions are very few. the state civil service is currently recruiting tho. This one too, you have to know "someone". Again, there are few lucky exceptions, but then things might be different, so no harm in trying. |
B.Sc = level 8 = roughly around 58k per month *quite annoying* if your friend is looking for stability/job security and isn't all so crazy about the money, I advise Ministry i.e. the civil service proper. LIRS is just too overcrowded |
gramci: Meaning?He's giving Uncle James a timetable for his 13yrs na.lol |
Ironi: So you people cannot see that this is another hoax.I salute your reasoning capability as displayed in this post. It is indeed worthy of emulation not by aspiring intellectuals, but probably by nursery school pupils aiming to get into Primary 1. I hope dis was just a slip & not a showcase of how you view issues generally in life. This is not a typical romance section story (some of which are indeed true btw) where you begin to play detective. What if the OP's claim is true? Go to the Gen Hospital laboratory nearest to you and ask them how many patients have tested positive to HIV dis week alone. I assure you, you'll be SHOCKED. Several people are in the OP's shoes but are too scared to speak out. Profer advice if you have any or simply read n learn. If the entire thread just doesnt appeal to you, just ignore it. The person who said ''say what is good or keep quiet'' was a very wise man. |
applelady: It is not in my hand †̥☹ start, it is the doctors that has to say when I will start, they said my CD4 is still high, it is when it gets to like 350 that I will start, meanwhile I'm on 'immunace' an immune booster. Acidosis, is it risky cos they wouldn't want to start giving me drug even if I ask them till I get to 350.Dont be in a rush & this might sound funny, but Congratulations. I pray ur CD4 count never drops to 400 or even 350, as to warrant commencement of the ARVs. Keep following your doctors advice & adhere strictly to ur immune booster drug dose. As you are right now (i stand corrected though), you are likely far healthier than several people who are HIV negative and believe nothing is wrong with them. So, dont be in a rush to start the drugs till your doctor says so. & by God's grace, even before it gets to that stage, a readily available n effective cure will have been found. @OP, they've said it all. Many HIV patients are still alive and very healthy today. I'll like to believe you are in good health presently & npt having any complaints. Take good care of yourself so it'll remain that way. -Tell as few people as possible. Preferably only those you've slept with recently (ur partner inclusive) & FEW close family members. -Many HIV patients suffer more as a result of psychological distress. Don't let that be your portion. Give thanks to God wen u wake up each day & make the day as wonderful as it can be. No brooding or lamenting or regretting o. What's happened has happened, & the only way it would adversely affect the original lofty goals you've set for urself is if you allow it to. Don't let that happen. Find other HIV+ individuals who are doing well (ur doc should help in this regard) & interact with them constantly. -Dont allow any i.d.iot to deceive you that there's one cure in one church or one mosque or one tradomedical place. U'll damage yourself more physically, financially n emotionally. -Be prayerful though. Keep ur faith n trust in God. There's a reason why some HIV victims are doing fine & some are suffering, & its not everythn the doctors can explain. You have a problem, but with ur co-operation & God's assistance, it can be managed. |
Goodmorning!!! Still Available!! |
My Oga, well detailed analysis. Thanks for d format u've laid down which i hope others will follow. Though ur post will serve more to educate NLers based in the UK, even I have picked up some things. Thanks again. I should have led the pack, but right now i do not currently have a car exclusively for my use, tho my money goes into it from time whenever I need it (which has been very few times in the last 10 months). & besyds, until next month, i'm still earning NYSC allowance ![]() I've already referred two friends to this thread, one to post his experience, & the other to pick up tips as he intends buying a car next month on a total monthly income of about 140k More analyses are welcome. |
Now, this topic was inspired by this thread https://www.nairaland.com/1038040/ideal-car-n80k-monthly-salary Overview: many people are of the opinion that while a car purchase may not be so hard, car maintenance could be difficult and very harsh on the pocket of a low - medium income earner. Now, there are also some people who would tell you that having a small car to run around with even if your income isn't so high is necessary at times. Some cite reasons ranging from "car helps image & assists business", "car aids movement of more people and goods", "you car could actually be earning you more money via picking up people to & from work for a fee", "cost of fueling your car (especially if its a fuel efficient one), even at 100naira per litre is CHEAPER than cost of public transportation, especially post-subsidy removal era)" So, house, on the average, how much do you spend on your car each month? Please state the type of car and engine type (or at least the make and engine type if you have privacy concerns). In giving us your amount (or close estimate), please bear in mind that its not just fueling costs we r talking about here, but also cost of replacement of spares, servicing e.t.c. if however, you've only spent very large sums on your car just a few times, point that out too. Again house, a monthly average maintenance cost of your car. Thanks. Over to you ![]() |
As in forget, if Fashola didnt have Tinubu breathing down his back the whole time, while greedily cornering resources for himself despite having left office, Lagos state would have gone far. As in VERY FAR. I dont agree with all of Fashola's decisions, especially the LASU fees hike,'& his seeming inability to stand up tp the BAT on some decisions especially the Toll gate issue, but no doubt, he's a good administrator albeit with his shortcomings as a human being. The other guy, BAT, is just a THIEF. So, Tinubu & his huge entourage of minions are not yet back from the convention in NC. Interesting. Starlett: He said, “Kabiyesi and his chiefs can continue to lead us, let them deal with all those traditional and chieftaincy issues. At the appropriate time, we will come and join them, but for now, leave us in our suits, booths, overalls and helmets, because this agbada is not good for clearing refuse and tarring the roads.”In essence: "Oba, i dont want anything from you. if you like continue sandfilling VI & selling at hundreds of millions of naira, building houses on what is supposed to be water. Soon, I will stop granting C of Os to land in those areas & when the time comes if necessary, I will demolish all those mansions (some of whose C of Os were signed by my predecessor AFTER he left office & backdated - i dont care) to save my state's waterways. Now if you'll excuse me, I have better things to attend to, & dont ever send your son to me again with this type of rubbish invitation. As for you, Prince, God save you say no be me appoint you (dey thank your Lion for bourdillon), i for don sack you, shey u kno." ![]() |
kanayogod: abegi oo, which one be M, N and A?Lol. Me don decode already. U gast decode urself o.lol. @ Imperiouxx, how abt M to BA.lol @ Jim, still awaiting more names of generous schools in IL o. Thanxxx |
.. |
jimtosam: The name of the school is Western Illinois University (www.wiu.edu). Their tuition is even cheaper compare to other American Universities. Most of Naija guys here are on GA cos it's not easy to pay the tuition with 20hrs on campus job. And most of the times their GA here is not about grade. Cos, 2.2 guys even get GA. It's about department. I know about 4 sure departments; Communication, Economics, Mathematics, Physics. Unless if the student does not apply. They get lot of research grants from Federal Government. Others get too but a little competitive. Others may require interview but those 4, they don't always interview. I still know about 3 more in Illinois that gives GA a lot...The stipend goes to the tune of 1.1k (full).Two-third (900).Thanks a lot for this info bro. I'll check out the school. At the risk of soundin like an Oliver Twist I won't mind u mentionin those other schools too o. Thanx man. |
webstradamus: Some schools actually give full tuition waiver plus stipends for MS. I am a witnessOya, you too, Webstra, abeg, what's ur school name? we go dey more gingered to study harder for GRE o ![]() |
imperiouxx: @jimtosam,some schools actually do grant tuition waivers + GA for MS only students o, especially if u have a high undergrad CGPA n good test scores. I wan dey build up my list of those schools against next august. I hope Jimtosam furnishes us wt d name of his school. |
jimtosam: Dr. Yinka,I'm so sorry to hear this. Please, apply for Masters in Molecular Biology or Public Health. When you get in, you can always redirect your path. But, if you have Masters in Public Health after 3semesters here in America lots of opportunities for you, especially in the Southern part. After then, you can pursue your Medicine dream.Pls, don't give up...Your dream will surely come through.Remember, So far you can conceive it, you can achieve it..Bros, abeg what school is that ? |
