We don't take tree planting seriously here. I have told SE governors to plant trees and vegetation near erosion site and see the issues tackled.

UN have used this method in many south east Asian countries.

Decent environment prolongs life. When you build our house, ensure you have trees and grasses, put flower pots inside the house and do small vegetable gardens and pot vegetables. Not concrete everywhere like we do.

There should be a bar protector on both sides of the road. Any slip from a careless driver will land the vehicle into a ditch

The high elevation section need to be protected on both sides. Our standards are still terribly low in this country

I hope they are not sold to private hospitals.

Most books and donations sent to public schools usually find their way into private schools with some of them still bearing the insignia, "this is not for sale"

We need value re orientation in Nigeria.

I don't know why people are here defending Nigeria. Defending Nigeria is the most difficult job to do in the midst of overwhelming evidence stacked against her.

We are backwards in terms of infrastructure and certain things taken for granted overseas.

Please don't compare SA with Nigeria in terms of infra structural development and competitiveness.

You are right. But trust me, women could be difficult to manage sometimes even when they are involved in things.

Involving them in everything sometimes may slow your pace as they seems confused and in most cases do not know what they want.

Interior decoration wise, is good to carry them along. No doubt about it.

What really annoys me is that when you ask these architects to design a house for you, they would come with nothing but those archaic pillars with tiles all over telling you that it's what is in vogue. Another one is this roofs that will be twice taller than the house itself. And they would tell you everybody is doing it that way. Honestly, I hate those "National Anthem" styles.

We seems to have the same taste. Go and do simple flat roof or mono pitch. Leave those longitudinal roof. . I don't like them.

Overseas, they even try and get room inside those roof.

This is my sixth year from when I started. Hopefully we go finish am. It has not been easy. Whatever comes goes into it.

I tell people, start and be moving small small if the money is not there but if pepper dey, finish fast.

There is one slogan in town now "LEKKI TYPE" they are contemporary design with flat roof. Mr Skimanski, Darenyx, Dennis3D have this contemporary design in archive.

You mean a modern front pillar design or an entirely new building design?

My house was initially designed without those front pillars in mind with a mono pitch roof type and not the usual gobel roofs with parapet.

I used cement board for fascia and eaves. So, I don't know how to insert these Nigerian pillars for front now

My brother! The way she de follow this house construction bumper to bumper. She is browsing houzz.com all the time. She say I be old school

I told her I would abandon this project and leave it for her to complete. The distraction too much

She would see something, next thing she would send the pictures for us to add. You don't build that way.

Honestly, I don't like those pillars but I am just trying to accommodate her interest for the last time. But if it would be expensive to add, bros, I no go do.

Simplicity is key. I am a minimalist.

That's my battle with my wife right now. People see those two pillars as sign of big building.

I don't like it at all. Contemporary houses do not have those pillars. I don't know why Nigerian architects are so obsessed with the pillars.

My wife has castigated our building because I didn't include the so called pillars and made comparison to other ones within my estate with pillars.

She said the front looks empty and unattractive without the pillars. So, me and my site supervisor are now trying to erect the so called pillars.

I have been searching to see a possible aesthetically appealing design that I could adopt and not the regular designs I see here.

People and ignorance - you think that all the people that go abroad go there to live and hustle. Some went there to buy their market before the sudden shut down of the airways.

I know my people who are mostly traders do go to Pakistan, Indian, Nepal and Bangladesh to buy Levi Strauss jeans and other wears for sale in Nigeria.

Those on full time hustle wont board this plane. Trust me. They will wait for the pandemic to be over to continue their hustle.

You are an Engineer - nice one. Some people don't even do German floors again all in the name of cutting costs.

I didn't know that the water there was rising from the ground. I thought it came from outside. Please explain the concept of wall joints to me properly

I am not an engineer but as one whose house is under construction, I follow what is going on there very well to avoid bad stories later.

The Lagos flood has made me to start raising the level of my compound that is still under construction. My compound level must be very high now.

I am doing a major modification to ensure that any water in the compound flows out and if the road is too flooded, it will take a heavy downpour and high water level to make that penetration.

As a builder in Lagos, watch what happens after heavy downpour in your site.

Nigerian youths!!! Everybody na online business but ask them the nature of the online business, they will just disappear.

Bros me, Na hustle o, ask them what the hustle is, they will keep dump.

Na my hardwork, ask them what the nature of work is, they be talking in parables.

Nice one but looks deserted with no economic activities.

Northern states with exception of kano and kaduna are not that congested compared to south towns.

You will always see well tarred scanty roads and no side business activities.

Lovely quiet places to stay and keep off from the bustling of southern towns.

Money is not an easy thing gather... he will fall.
When caught, please dont be too emotional, let the SARS guy deal with him ruthlessly.
As said before, we do have good people here and I have also engaged numerous Nairalanders here, but there are still some rotten apples trolling around. So we have to do real dilligence before we make any business with them.

These kind of thing happens when the parents or relatives are not vast about how prestigious higher institutions are - With all due apologies to KWASU

if my child could make that score, what stops me from picking more prestigious schools for him or her. May be the KWASU is the only institution close to his place of abode. He may be living either in kogi or kwara state.

After all in US, a lady scored one of the highest in SAT and chose Indiana state university while people were concerned why she didn't choose the ivy league universities. Her reason was that she lives in Indiana and had visited the university and liked it. A good guider would have offered a better choice for her than the Indiana she chose.

Thank you Hajji, our investigation on tracking him has reached an advanced stage. He has been posting me for more than three weeks.

My SARS friend in Egbada had already obtained all his contacts from the network he uses and the bank. He may run but will surely be caught.

I don't give room for frivolities - If you do any how, you see any how. Thank God that I am not spending money to track him down as the officer in Abuja that linked me to the Lagos SARS office was my secondary school mate and works directly in the IGs office. So, he is getting weekly updates on the matter making the SARS officers here to be up and doing.

Two nairalanders have done marvelous works for me before. I can mention Dominionng, may be without his permission. He did an excellent roof facial and eaves facial works using his popularized galvanized iron instead of wood and fiber cement board. A nairaland also roofed the house.

Here I am stocked with one crook that continues to profess "Godliness" and yet behaves like a con - man. I paid him to supply the additional large windows I told you about after collecting the money and disappeared.

I blame myself because I saw the red flags but believed him because of his postings here.

I will soon expose him as I am bidding my time and following the advise I got from the criminal investigation of SARS that I should hold on with further communication. -

I have seen him two times inside his ride. One at the lekki first round up trying to enter admiralty way and the second time at falomo under bridge trying to negotiate a turn to Awolowo road.

He was in a non tinted transparent ford SUV looking so serious and upset. I was like " see bros dey vex for these rough drivers for road.

I tell you bro - I just finished reading the guys posts - He is good. There are a lot of good guys here and some CONEMEN as well parading as pastors and builders, but I would soon expose one of them when I am done with our underground investigation with my SARS friend.

A popular nairaland in the property section is on the run with my money without delivering his own part of the deal as he has gone under.

Two thing contributed to the final finishing of the plastering/rendering.

1. Level of workmanship
2. Nature of material ( sand)

1. To get well smooth surface level of workmanship determines this in most cases.

2. Nature of the sand used will determine the final look of the plaster when dry up, some plaster sand are yellowish in nature and no mater what you do the final look will still look yellowish.
Some plaster sand also are grey in nature this will looks like cement colour after it drys up even in wet form you will notice it.

We are so crude, disorganised and indiscipline in everything. Hate them or love them, the standard exhibited there is of top quality and international.

A typical Nigerian abhors decency and fine aesthetics as there is no room for him to do as he likes, throws things on the floor, spit out on the floor, deface the wall or pee by the side.

Rent out your well built house to tenants, they will turn them to an eyesore; build a new hostel for students and come there after one year, the sanitary condition would be an eye sore.

Car dealers and scam - I fear who no fear them!

After car dealers, na agents I fear so - property, land, house, name them.

Agency business and shady deals are like 5 and 6 in Nigeria.

Mehn, burials always have some bad aspects of it.

Transporting corpse to village for burial always seems to be one of the most dangerous undertaken these days. I was going to PH one time by road and saw a bus on fire with a casket by the road side. I am sure those people were conveying the corpse to the village.

There has been many reports of unplanned and unimagined accidents happening at burials. That Nkpor, Ogidi, Abatete road is very narrow even though the road is in a first class condition - well tarred but too narrow and with a lot of sharp bends and bushes by the side that will make it difficult for amateur driver to negotiate to either side of the road in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Most folks don’t like it because size for size it flows less air than the casements. But with foresight one can adjust for it easily.

So if a casement is 4x4 it will enjoy the full opening but a slider will need to be 8 feet for the same flow. So two sliding windows of 4x4 will give the same.

Cost one might worry but this is why we should build small.

That was the strategy I used. The openings of my sliding is bigger than the normal 4x4 casement.

I also like your idea of the smaller the house the better. My uncle built a massive 8 room duplex at the peak of his career in mid 90s.

The children are all grown and are living on their own. Maintaining that house now is a big problem.

When one talks in the main living room downstairs, it echoes because of size with practically nobody living there except my uncle, his wife and a maid.

I am a core minimalist and not a fan of big mansion. I had to remodelled my house to create a mini 2 bedroom duplex for rent from the original main building.

There is no need occupying a massive house when the children are all gone to their respective houses and destinations

If the quality of sliding windows they use here in USA is the same as Naija, I would have gone for that too.
I have sliding windows here but you need to see the quality and double even triple glass layers on them for better insulation. Thick aluminium and high quality glass.

Note: Please post the pics when completed. And dont settle for less quality for a massive window like that.

You can say that again. Three tracks. Pull it and see massive air in flow on both sides. And it is even cheaper than casement.

Overseas, they mostly use sliding and not casement we use here. Some of their slidings are the ones you slide from down and move it up.

I so much love sliding windows. I don't know why people don't like it.

If not for my wife's insistence on casement, I would have used sliding all through.

I am changing the masters bedroom with ultra large sliding windows, from one end of pillar to the other.

I planted corn and tomatoes at the back of my plot under construction.

I so much love plants and anything green. Let's embrace the habit of planting something within our vicinity no matter how small.

You can Google about pot planting and how you could plant things in flower pots or any other container.

Maize, tomatoes and other vegetables could grow very well in containers at home.

Try it and you would like the feel and look of those plants.

That's why I love oyibos. Go to their houses and you see flower and plant pots everywhere. This is what I learnt very well when I was in UK
