(1) Agree with your praise of the OP but not your personal view. I would migrate even at age 60, in fact that is the best time to migrate to a sane country. In Nigeria you're at risk of being abused or killed in old age for being a witch, and NOBODY will do anything about it.

Good Luck to Nigerians.
You have always wanted to read OP's experiences. I had to do the needful.

I watched the entire video on Instablog9ja, and this has always been my argument about going round the corners for sex. Why not go direct? She messaged the lad complaining of kini kon kini kon which cost 2 million naira and he promised to "make her happy". He did not explicitly promise to give her the money, which she did not clarify.

He spent on her by going to fanciful restaurants and even spraying money in a club. Obviously, she was happy as she smiled and laughed in all the videos. To cap the experience, he requested they go to his hotel room, to which she agreed, and everyone knows what that means. Now, she accuses me of having sex with her for free. Also, she says what she did is not prostitution as netizens opined. I wonder what the other name for selling sex is. Her fault as she did not state what exactly she wanted. You wanted 2 million, why not state it rather than opt for the so-called enjoyment? The clubbing and meals at the restaurant cannot be converted to the 2 million. So, be explicit.

To such women who want money from their male acquaintances with no plans of repaying it (I am wary of lending money to Nigerians), ask him if he has a friend(s) who can offer 2 million if she decides to spend a weekend with him or them. State what you want. If he says yes, you negotiate the deal. If he says no, you try another. We are in the era of gender equality, so modern women have to work for their money. No free money or lunch. You must work for every kobo you want.

To such men, explicitly state what you want from her. Rather than spend double (making her happy and offering 2 million), go straight to the point. Taking a woman to a nice restaurant or buying things for her does not mean sex is mandatory. So be explicit.

BTW, why was she weeping? Nonsense!

TravelRe: What Is With The Inflated Ego Of Nigerians Who Relocate Abroad by Gerrard59(m): 6:36pm On Mar 30, 2024
This thread reminds of a Twitter conversation I saw a long time ago. Paraphrasing it, a poster tweeted: "Nigerians in the diaspora are more intelligent than those at home". Someone responded, I think Victor Asemota, saying such a mentality is bad. The original poster replied by asking, "How can people who don't experience uninterrupted electricity be intelligent"? I think Asemota did not respond or block the person. grin

Regarding your post, I would say arrogance and poverty are at fault. Growing up, while my dad wanted me and my siblings to meet our richer uncles who were (and are still) based in the UK and Ireland, my mom objected because they were "forming" and were not cordial or "happy" to receive us. She hates insults. She argues that rather than listen or become subservient to such people, we work on our finances and grow. In other words, be like those who admire or better than them.

To your Ex's family, the best way is to decline her $100 stipend. It might come as pride, but it can be categorised as self-dignity. As I am, I cannot use $100 to control my family because it is not possible. So, the family has to show her (the youngest female) that they can thrive, not survive, without her $100.

On the other hand, it could be environs and who they grew up with and mingled. My folks in Nigeria are doing well; either as entrepreneurs or working with good firms. So, it does not make any sense to "look down" on them. Would you look down on someone who works with NNPC? Or runs her thriving catering business that she no even get time to respond to your chats? So upbringing matters. I am very receptive to messages and calls. If I miss them due to time zone differences or busy schedules, I reply very well. Just don't ask me for money because I don't have shingban and I am not very good at giving money to people anyhow.

Nigeria has economic opportunities, so one can/might return to harness them. It is those classmates/friends/associates one would fall back on. So, cutting them off or being brash or arrogant means bridges would be cut. On the other hand, for those in Nigeria, if you notice any snub or no-reply sort of mentality, you stop chatting with them and focus on your hustle/craft.

In fact, I was thinking aloud a few days ago that when this UK set of japarians eventually return to Nigeria (many would return), Nigerian corporate HRs go dey do yanga because their UK work experiences would vary from what they studied in British universities. I won't be surprised HRs would prefer someone who has worked in Nigeria to another who worked in the UK because of what they see this set doing in the UK. Other countries might be different, but I think those in Nigeria now see the UK in a different light.

I don’t have a job in Nigeria right now that I am doing. I have never applied for a Schengen visa before. What are the documents that I’ll probably need to apply

And one important question: does it make sense for a Nigerian to submit account statement in USD to the embassy?
Unfortunately, no idea about applying for a Schengen visa.

And yes, Australian lifestyle makes you active even at old age. People of 90+ years and still driving and walking without assistance here bered in less than 6 months. Australia is not lousy like UK, Canada, US. Just relax, make your money and enjoy life.
Not again!!!

Unless he intends to return to Nigeria later in life, why the conversion? Is he spending naira in Australia? Just as I stated above, returning has to be planned now or else, he will be in Australia for the rest of his life, as flying to Nigeria would not be feasible unless he gets quite rich to afford it. Remaining in Australia for the rest of his life erodes whatever AUD to NGN conversion you have there.

His earnings and expenses are in AUD, stick to it. Nothing concerns NGN in Australia.

This is an interesting tale for Nigerian immigrants who live in far-flung places. As they age, they should make plans regarding who they marry and where they will want to retire because travelling between a place like Australia and Nigeria is not feasible continuously compared to a Nigerian in, say, Germany or the UK.

So, one should be mindful of who he marries while in Australia, how many children they have and where exactly they wish to retire vis-a-vis physical assets they will own.

The Dutch PM visited China to discuss Ukraine and, to a lesser extent, ASML. Well, Xi has stated that China would not relent in its determination to be a leader in semiconductor chip production and its value chain. On the other hand, the Dutch PM, a front-runner for NATO Chief position, has said he is in China to persuade China to stop supporting Russia.

I am really stunned by the arrogance of the West. Why do they expect China to stop supporting Russia after the sanctions they have slapped China with? Why do they think the Chinese would not be apprehensive that China will be next if Russia falls? What about the "Century of Humiliation" China suffered?

Also, Janet Yellen is visiting China. Bros, what exactly is she going to discuss with Chinese leaders? I am really curious.

It is not necessarily the bills but the fact that women have entered the workforce, thus reducing jobs for men. Those jobs men in older days would have used to support families are now being competed for not just with other men, but women as well. For that very reason, women should contribute as they have reduced the potential earning power of most men.

Well done OP. I applaud your determination, perseverance and, most importantly your honesty. You try because if na me at that age, I won't migrate to anywhere. There has to be a time in a man's life he enjoys the reward for his hard work. Nevertheless, well done.

The only thing I miss, is the big man mentality we have in Nigeria. Where I will sit in my office, call one of my staff in intercom and ask for a cup of coffee; and it will be brought to me in seconds. You can't try that rubbish here.

The level of security here is top notch. I have no fear, i move about anytime of the day/night. After one week in Australia, I concluded that Nigeria is a completely lawless country and an animal jungle. Here everything is ordered. I am yet to hear a driver blow his car horn while driving. There are no touts, there are no omoniles. Electricity has never blinked for one second. water is constant, gas is there. I have never seen two persons fighting in the street. I have never seen a mad man or woman on the road or street beggars. The air we breath here is different from the air we breath in Nigeria.

It was in Australia that I realized that the saying in Nigeria that Nigerian police is your friend is actually true. Break the law in Nigeria and police catches you, just give them #2,000 you are off the hook. And the circle of lawlessness continues. Here, it is a different ball game. Proposing bribe will be used as evidence against you. It doesn't matter who you are. Every one is civil.

Children are doing wonderfully well at school and are already speaking through their nose.
The bold would be criticised by Nairalanders, rightfully so, so get prepared.

Generally, developed countries are safer and law abiding. In fact, some developing countries are also pretty safe because of their demographics and could be safer as they become prosperous. Factors which are the bedrock of law abiding societies with high HDIndcies are:

- Democracy
- Free markets which result in economic prosperity
- Property Rights
- Ethnic or racial or religious dominance by a group or groups. This is the most important factor in assessing how safe a society is regardless of how prosperous it might be. Some ethnic or racial or religious groups have belligerent characteristics.

expenses by those who receive the money via remittances. This is real life. It happens every day.

In fact this ability to earn more naira equivalent by working abroad is THE REASON for the high demand for migration from Nigeria. This is easy to understand. So if a diasporan saves $1K and sends it to Nigeria and it's converted to ₦1.4M, that isn't the same naira? What am I missing here?

People are boasting about earning ₦1M per month and the entire Federal Government revenue is $15 billion, but somehow $26 billion isn't equivalent to ₦36 trillion anymore because it was sent from overseas? Why does the Federal Government and also our banks borrow from abroad then? Come on guys. Money is fungible. Right?

The whole point of migration is to earn more naira. So I disagree with the whole "those abroad don't spend naira" because they do. It glaringly obvious. Helllloooooo.

Anyway I've been saying it over and over, diasporans should stop sending money to Nigeria. Apparently the money you send isn't real anyway so why bother.

Good Luck to Nigeria.
Thanks for your analysis.

If the intent is to return to Nigeria in a few years' time, then I can understand. However, for those who intend to make their new countries their permanent abode, then it is pointless and fruitless.

Putting this here for those who don't understand elementary economics and kini kon "government should regulate house rents".

Gerrard59:
To solve the housing shortage problem anywhere is relatively simple:

- Increase the supply of land and ease the process of building houses/apartments. The government should also go into public housing provision. That is what the Singapore government does. After COVID, property prices ballooned because of WFH policies, returning Singaporeans from abroad, people who emigrated from Hong Kong because of kini kon CCP laws, rising costs of labour as most workers moved back to their home countries, rising costs of building materials because of supply chain backlog from COVID etc. Expectedly, citizens complained and the government rose to action by easing border rules for construction workers and investing massively into newer PUBLIC housing developments. On the other hand, she released new lands to private developers while also increasing the taxes on those who purchased more than one property. The government also increased the tax rates on foreigners who purchased properties and closed loopholes. As I write, house rents have declined considerably compared to 2022 levels. It is not magic, but specific government policies.

- In Hong Kong, prices plummeted as many foreigners emigrated for various reasons. The government still had to invest in PUBLIC housing developments to satisfy the demands of younger Hong Kongers, especially as housing is tied to marriage, which is tied to fertility rates. But because the HK City Council generates hooge revenues from land sales, the government has not reduced the prices, unlike its counterpart in Singapore. However, compared to pre-COVID, house prices have declined significantly. To prop up demand, the government has eased immigration rules.

P.S. None of those governments DICTATED or stipulated to private developers the prices they should peg to lease their properties like our resident Karl Marxes argue, foolishly as expected anyway. Dictating to private developers how to price their rented properties has not worked anywhere in the world.

To solve Lagos housing issues, again, it is simple:

- Lagos MUST build UP. It is Nigeria's smallest state with the biggest economy and the most populous. That is more than enough to warrant consistent and increasing demand for apartments.

- High-speed railways to Ogun, Oyo and even Osun states. Everyone must not live in Lagos itself. Well-tarred roads leading to train/metro hubs so that commuters can easily and quickly move from Point A to Point B. Make driving, especially personal cars/vehicles, expensive within Lagos itself. Upgrade and privatise the water ferry transport systems. Insist on safety, cleanliness, punctuality and efficiency.

- Other states should be opened up economically so that the majority of young Nigerians don't have to move to Lagos to begin their nascent careers. States like Delta, Edo, Ogun, Oyo, Ebonyi, Bayesla, Cross River, Benue, Nasarawa, Niger, Kaduna, Plateau, and even the unfortunate Kogi should and can be developed as commuter hubs for residents. That is how it is easy in Japan, where most commuters live in Chiba and Saitama but work in Tokyo. How is this possible? Trains!

Are we so unintelligent in that part of the world that we cannot copy good things from others who have mastered them?!

For those aforementioned states to become commuter zones, invest in infrastructure, especially roads and railways, and most importantly, in security. Again, these are simple policies. Nothing is hard here, as it is not rocket science.

Because fewer people are not building newer homes for tenants to rent. People rather build and offer as Airbnbs. The Airbnb phenomenon also affects house prices elsewhere in the world. Since private investors own those properties, the government cannot regulate them, so the government should invest in public housing. The Singapore government banned Airbnb in public housing.

How is that bad? Is the landlord unaffected by the increase in goods and services in 2024? Is the value of 50K in 2013 the same as 50K in 2024? The very reason why landlords with older homes can increase their prices to compete with newer ones is supply and demand. I already covered supply above. If the demand for residential properties remains consistently high, basic and elementary economics says there would be a corresponding increase in the prices of properties regardless of their ages.

And if the shape is renovated to 2024 standards, should the landlord lease them on 2013 prices because the property was built in 2013? Is the price of cement in 2013 the same as that in 2024? What about the wages of construction workers?

It is not wickedness but basic economic principles and concepts. Nigerians have this attitude of using words anyhow. Wickedness is when the landlord outrightly refuses to lease the property even after offered millions. Looking at it again, that is not wickedness because the landlord has the right to choose whether or not his property should be rented out.

If you want to be kind with your properties, it is very simple. Go out there to build houses and rent them out however you like. That is the beauty of capitalism: you choose what to do. Hopefully, you and many others get to practice what you people have mendaciously preached in this thread.
