Made in Nigeria goods are good except that the makers lack finesse in their crafts.

From ordinary tiling, wooden products, leather products to building construction, one can easily notice quackery
and lack of attention to details -- either the stitching is jacked or the lines are crooked. Yet, they expect top
payment for what seemed to have been made by a blind fellow.

Kudos to Ifeanyi Uba.

When the parabolic slide started, I beckoned on the CBN governor to borrow a leaf from the Japanese and Swiss--both countries are notorious for verbal interventions. In verbal intervention, the only thing he has to do is to make a serious statement that will shake the confidence of speculators and they will liquidate their holdings. Uba made that call on national tv backed with N500b asset. No sane speculator will stand in the way of such bold move. And naira appreciated. Some people may never understand the implications of the statement by Uba.

The question is: Where do we go from here? When the dust settles, naira is heading back down towards N300/$ before the end of the year when economic fundamentals will thrive over emotions.

pinkiecutie:
Oh What A Life! Should I Sell My Virginity To Retain My Job?

good evening Nigerian's..

my heartfelt greetings goes to you guys once more as you this forum was instrumental to my getting a job last year August...

This is my story. I work for an auditing firm , name withheld by me. early this year I occasionally caught my boss staring at me provocatively I.e lustfully but I just took it as nothing serious because he has never made advances before to me.
Earlier this month, he started complimenting my looks and all, but I still not suspecting anything reciprocated by complimenting his good looks too..
After all who doesn't want to be in the good books of his or her boss..
On the 21st of Jan , he called me into his office and offered me a seat.
I sat innocently, and from there he started his talk about how hard working I was and all.
As if that was not enough, he drew closer and tried to fumble my breast..this man in his mid fifties , had no shame when I politely told him that I was still a virgin and that he should stop..
He apologized and asked me out of his office..
About three days later, he sent for me and presented my termination letter. When I opened the letter, a tear dropped off my eyelids as I saw in block black and bold letters "TERMINATION OF APPOINTMENT DUE TO REDUNDANCY" . I stood there for close to five minutes not knowing what to say. After a while I managed to utter a thank you sir and left to pack all my belongings out of the company..
I went home to meet my sick mom(my father is late, I am an only child), when I saw her state I couldn't just bring it upon my self to tell her that I was just sacked..
right now, all the money I have been spending has gone to my mother's treatment..
even to eat now is a problem, right now having 1000 naira is like a million naira...
I have considered giving in but my vow to keep my virginity till marriage is still strong ( this virginity till marriage is a family thing. my mom, mom's mom and so on where Virgins)
so confused right now lord please help me, in your loving kindness touch the hearts of men to look upon your daughter who has chosen to live according to your ways amen...

Hasn't it occurred to you that even if you sleep with him now, there is no guarantees that you will get your job back.

Then it becomes double loss.

Thanks to verbal interventions by Ifeanyi Ubah. That's what CBN governor should have done--create uncertainties that make speculators unwind. JAPAN and Switzerland are the masters of that kind of game. And when they do, speculators are wiped out by a huge gap in price.

Once someone is not post nudes and immoral things, they have all the right in the world to post whatever they like!

Common sense is knowing when to beat a retreat.

Plagiarised analysis? Very funny!
---
The government does not need to take Ubah up on any nonsense offer. He is a Nigerian elite, he has access to the Presidency, NASS, CBN, media houses, etc. Let him vomit what he has to offer. Why does he need to be consulted before he offers suggestion to help his country in crisis?
/
If special advisers are getting paid for nothing, why should Uba work for free? Monkey go work; baboon go chop?

Consultants get paid for their services. Like I said, FG should take him up on the offer since he placed lien on his business. We are talking about the FG that seem not to have an iota of idea on how to tackle the issue.

Or we can let the slide continue while Buhari gallivants over the world. Uba is the only one so far that has offered solutions with personal risks involved. Everyone else is reading textbooks and vomiting the contents as if the textbooks were not written from the experiences of the ones who tried, failed or passed. Like I always say, issues like this reminds me of why oyibo remain the masters. They can formulate policies out of the wind.

Are you disappointed because the offer is coming from Uba instead of Martin Shkreli?

Ordinarily, I should not comment on this thread since Ubah has not mentioned how he would go about it. However, for the benefit of those who might get swayed by his cheap claims, I'll say something.
---
The exchange rate (PRICE of dollars) is determined primarily by SUPPLY of dollars (through exports, FDIs, foreign borrowing, etc) and DEMAND for dollars (through imports, payments of foreign school fees/medical bills, online purchases, etc). The NET flow of these transactions determine the Balance of Payments (BOP) account with the Central Bank. Elementary economics tells us that when demand exceeds supply, prices go up!
---
Coming back to Nigeria, it is well known that oil accounts for 95% of our FX earnings. As oil prices have collapsed from ~$100 in 2014 to ~$30, our supply of dollars has dropped tremendously. This is even worse when one considers that our cost of oil production is ~$20/bbl, meaning that our dollar revenue from oil has dropped from ~$80/bbl to ~$10/bbl. On the demand side, the request for imports are increasing. With such supply shock and increasing demand, there is only one way for the exchange rate to go. This is basic economics and has nothing to do with Emefiele or Buhari, except you are simply being mischievous or grossly ignorant.
---
When oil collapsed from around $147 to $38 due to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC), Nigeria had a Foreign Reserve of ~$62bn. The then CBN Governor had to spend ~$20bn from the Reserves to meet import demand thereby preventing devaluation/depreciation. Between 2011 & 2014, oil price was above $100, meaning that the administration never had a dollar supply problem and so could maintain a stable exchange rate. Fast forward to late 2014 when oil prices slid to ~$60, the CBN had to devalue the Naira twice within a period of 6 months (Nov 2014 & Feb 2015) because the Reserves were too low (<$35bn) to deplete to support imports. Now in 2016, oil prices are around $30/bbl while FX Reserves is less than $28bn. The supply shock has reached unprecedented levels, yet demand for imports has not decreased. There is absolutely no way that the exchange rate can stay below N250/$. Simple economics says that price will continue to move till a new equilibrium is reached where demand equates supply.
---
There is no policy from Emefiele, Soludo, Greenspan, Bernanke or any other Central Bank governor that can strengthen the Naira in the near term. Except we want to completely deplete the Reserves or go to the IMF to borrow SDRs just to meet import demands. Brace up folks, if oil price collapses to $20 (thereby increasing the supply shock) the exchange rate shall hit N1000/$ and I repeat, this has nothing to do with Emefiele or Buhari but simply economic forces. The only thing that can save the Naira is either for SUPPLY of dollars to increase (through high oil price) or DEMAND to reduce. Since we do not have control over the supply side, we can at least focus on managing the demand side.
---
So Mr Ifeanyi Ubah, you have zero knowledge on what you are talking about. With all the money you made from the last government, you can start by building a refinery or some other manufacturing facility (like Dangote) to help us substitute for imports. That would help the Naira more than you seeking cheap consultancy from the government. Or except you want to broker a deal for the government to give amnesty to your Dasuki-Gate friends, so they can bring out stashed up dollars from soakaways and graveyards to support the economy.
/
You just wasted a lot of space.

Uba may not follow your plagiarized analysis but he has done the most important thing--challenge the government.

The FG should take him up on the offer since he is risking his business empire. They can then prove him right or wrong.

They will prefer her because as has been shown...Nigerians will take satan from the West than Jesus Christ from Nigeria.

And you wonder why toothpicks are imported from abroad into a rainforest country like Nigeria. Or are you still wondering why expatriates with ordinary certificate holders are made managers while Nigerians with masters degrees are their underlings in Nigeria? Affiliation matters more than competency when dealing with anything Nigeria.

NOI sounds foreign and that's what matters to Nigerians.

It is better to have a gun and don't need it than need a gun and don't have it.
You are living in the present. How about the future?

Remember that Soludo wanted to recalibrate the naira. People living in Nigeria were elated. Today, the same naira is N400/dollar. What changed? Life moves from present to future. That future is here and it sucks. When your future comes, will you look back in regret.

No one knows what tomorrow will bring. Stay in school. Get your education. Be the best you can be by graduating in flying colours because whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.

I am not in anyway an economist but i have been reading a bit, especially Henry Boyo ( truth be told, i get an anytime i do).
I believe we earn our oil revenue in dollars, what if the federal government pay states their allocation in dollars and the state simple exchange their dollars for naira at the bank or BDC.
With this system there will be surplus dollar in the system that will drive the exchange rate down. A good example of this was during the last election when dollar was raining all over the place (thanks to Dasuki) the dollar fell to 170 naira despite official rate at 197 naira.

www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/business/51434-naira-gains-against-dollar-at-black-market

So I ask again what will go wrong if we flood the economy with dollars?
/
The FG cannot flood the market with dollars just as it didn't refurbish the refineries.

Remember the Igbo saying, " ana adighi mma bu uru ndi nze".

We had oil cabal. There are forex cabals. Last few months arbitrage has created many overnight billionaires. Buy $1m at N197 and sell at N400. That is N203m in a matter of days. Multiple by n times in a month. Oil didn't give this much profit. This is the most viable get-rich quick scheme in this century.

Before...$5000 gives N750k. Today $5000 gives cool N2million. Just $2500 makes you a millionaire in the "best place in the world" (wink). grin grin grin

Even those cab drivers, security guards, cleaners, etc all of you love to hate can buy your whole village now if they apply themselves. There is more to being the best place in the world than the pursuit of pleasure and worldly entertainment. The economy should be an integral part of it.

Politics › Re: Setting The Record Straight On PDP Chairman Ali Modu Sheriff by InvertedHammer: 6:44pm On Feb 17, 2016
TonyeBarcanista:
The naming of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the former governor of Borno state as the PDP National Chairman and successor to Alhaji Adamu Muazu has generated a lot of controversy in the polity. A prominent member of this forum and staunch critic of PDP, who I consider my brother, friend, and big boss called me to mock the decision of the party. In all honesty, my reaction was more of wearing a sad face that I joined him in the mockery. Who would accept the fact that an "alleged Boko Haram founder" has been saddled with the task of navigating a party that is so engrossed in controversy and is in dire need of leadership? My initial displeasure wasn't hidden even towards some of my PDP comrades.

However, I made up my mind to thoroughly appreciate the man Modu Sheriff and to holistically look at issues that surround his tag as Boko-Haram "founder" to establish whether or not such a moral burden on him is justified.

Sheriff: A Boko Haram Sponsor or Victim of Blackmail?
The Belief...
Before now there is this belief that Ali Modu Sheriff in preparation to 2003 election against then incumbent Malla Kachalla entered into agreement with the Yusufyya BH movement. According to "belief", the Yusufiyya group would support Modu Sheriff's gubernatorial bid on condition that Sheriff's government(if elected) would implement Sharia rule in Borno state. It is also believed Sheriff's appointment of Haramite Alhaji Buji Foi, the National Secretary of Yusufyya Movement as commissioner for religious affairs was in furtherance of the "agreement".

The Facts...
As much as I would not want to draw myself into "defending" anybody associated with BH, I think it will be appropriate to lay this issue to bare. Facts on ground shows that sharia system was adopted in Borno state on August 18, 2000, the law was tagged 'Borno State Sharia Administration of Justice Law 2000'. It came just over a year after Sheriff's predecessor Bala Kachalla took office and almost three years before Sheriff took office. This fact ordinarily should nullify the rumour of purported agreement between Sheriff and Yusufiyya movement prior to 2003 election.
www.news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/887355.stm

It is even a fact that on adoption of Sharia system in Borno state in 2000, then Governor Bala Kachalla constituted Borno State Sharia Law Implementation Committee in February, 2001 headed by Professor Abubakar Mustapha, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, with Boko Haram leader Muhammed Yusuf as a member of the committee. If there is anyone that Yusufyya would have supported in 2003 would have been Bala Kachalla, who flew the AD ticket for re-election but lost woefully to Sheriff. Why should Yusuf not support Kachalla when he not only approved Sharia system but also appointed Yusuf into Sharia Implementation Committee?

May God Bless Us All and Bless Nigeria
/
Pre-Momodu era, Borno State adopted Sharia law.

During Momodu's tenure, Borno State adopted Boko Haram strategy.

Law and Strategy are two different things.
