A better a more befitting question would have been...Why did he even sign the condolence register to begin with? There is no law stating that he must sign it, unless he did out of hypocrisy ie to appear to be sympathetic while truly not being.

Look up the meaning of ‘condolence’ it is an emotional expression in reaction to the sad event that has just occurred; you can’t sign a condolence register and be indifferent or void of sympathy.

Simply writing something like....”my sincere sympathy to the widow and children over the passing of their husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather” is enough.

If as you stated; there are somethings that may have been perceived negatively by the family, had he written them...if that is the situation, he truly have no business signing the condolence register as that act would be hypocritical.

Condolence register is strictly for those who have a sympathetic feelings or emotions towards the event that has just occurred.
