Politics › Afrileaks Website To Expose Abuses In Africa - BBC by neocortex(op): 1:54am On Jan 14, 2015
A whistle-blowing website which aims to expose politicians and businessmen who abuse power in Africa has been launched by media and campaign groups.

AfriLeaks will give people a chance to leak sensitive information anonymously.

The site's founders say it is an attempt to boost investigative journalism to expose widespread corruption and human rights abuses.

It will also help circumvent growing surveillance by governments and corporate firms, they say.

Afrileaks, made up of 19 media outlets and activist groups, says it is committed to "speaking truth to power".

'Digital safety'
"You will be able to send us documents and select which of our member organisations should investigate it," it says.

"We've designed a system that helps you to share these materials while protecting your own identity, so that it becomes impossible to identify you as the source of the leak."

US National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden speaks via live video call during the Right Livelihood prize ceremony at the parliament in Stockholm, on December 1, 2014
Edward Snowden has been exiled in Russia since leaking details of US surveillance programmes
Most of the 19 are newspapers and include South Africa's Mail & Guardian, Kenya's Daily Nation and Nigeria's Premium Times.

The Mail & Guardian says AfriLeaks is modelled along the lines of Europe's GlobaLeaks with the aim of making whistle-blowing safer.

"In the post-Snowden world in which we live, with government and corporate surveillance a reality, it has become critically important for journalists and whistle-blowers to take every precaution to ensure their digital safety," the paper reports.

The US wants to put ex-security contractor Edward Snowden on trial for leaking to the media in 2013 details of mass surveillance programmes. He is exiled in Russia.

Correspondents say newspapers in multi-party democracies in Africa have often exposed corruption and human rights abuses.

The challenge AfriLeaks faces is to get whistle-blowers in repressive states like Eritrea and Sudan, where control over the internet is tight, they say.

Like you said, it is a shame that Nigerians will vote for anyone and anything as long as it is not Jonathan. Such a damn shame

This election marks a turning point for Nigeria, it will show the political class that they are accountable to the electorate and if they fall short of expectations- Nigerians will kick them out.

In 2019, if Buhari does not perform, we will boot him out.

Power to Nigerians not politicians.

Nigerians gave the GEJ their trusts, loyalties, allegiances and pledges but he failed us:

by letting women dictate how he should rule the country with over 170 millions couple with 516 ethnics.

By politicizing everything rather than to tackle them as a head of states and most powerful person in Nigeria.

He let 'the seeking for second term' becloud his sense of ruling and directing the affairs of Nigeria.

He failed to tackle corruption so as so not to upset the chosen few

He made other countries to ridicule us in every ramification and made us to command a little respect before any country. Any country can do whatever she likes to Nigerians just or unjust.....

GEJ tried his best he could do as a president but let give another a chance and see the result.

Give one reason to vote for GEJ and I will tell a thousand reasons not to vote for him....
You can only measure success against a others performamce not absolutely. If you truly consider how GEJ has fared compared to his predecessors you will give him a pass mark.

Some angry youth on Saturday attacked and set ablaze a campaign bus branded with President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign posters at Zololo junction, Bauchi road in Jos, Jos North Local Government area of Plateau state.

Youth Burn PDP Bus
It is not clear what led to the attack. Police could not be immediately reached for comments.

A witness, whose car was also torched by the rampaging mob, said another PDP-branded car was also set alight.

The source, who only identified herself as Mrs. Rose, told PREMIUM TIMES that her Honda car was also smashed by the protesting youth.

She said the road leading to the area was blocked by the rampaging youth, as they bashed other vehicles plying the route.

According to her, the incident occurred in the presence of members of the Special Taskforce on Jos crisis STF, who could not help stop the action of the youth.

The incident has generated tension within the state capital Plateau state capital as residents rushed home for safety.

The attack occurred as PDP supporters in the state converged at the Hiapang Airport to receive the gubernatorial candidate of the party, Gyang Pwajok, who was returning from Lagos after receiving his flag last Thursday.

Did you know that in 1983, Chief Obafemi Awolowo contested at the age of 74 while Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe contested in 1979 at 75? Did you know that Ronald Reagan became US president at the age of 70 and served two terms of four years each? Just last December, Tunisia sworn in Beji Caid Essebsi as their President. Did you know how old is he? President Essebsi is 88 years old. The election that brought him in as president was the first free and fair presidential election since the country (Tunisia ) gained independence in 1956. If a 72 years old grand “Pa” (as the haters called him) can give me constant electricity, guarantee maximum security (stop the killings up North), put food on my table and stop corruption that a 57 years old young man who is suffering from an inferiority complex can not give then I will be a very big fool to refuse such CHANGE. To all insulting the man. Take a look from this angle

His daughter was raped. Under Islamic parlance, she might possibly not get married cos of that lingering issue on her. Since the rapist decided he would marry her, the father was happy that the shame would soon be over and therefore agrees provided there isn't any use of pregnancy in a month.

Note: the rapist in the afterworld would have his punishment cos of direct contravention to the forbidden act he committed (Haram)

#ProudlyChristianThough wink
@ the bolded : there is no evidence for it.

You don't need to state your religion to make your indefensible point.

A grave crime was committed against an innocent 13 year old and the thoughtless father deemed it fit to marry the victim to one of her attacker.
Is marriage more important than a lifetime of happiness ?

There is no justification for the double crime committed against this innocent child by the so called father and the rapist.
And this is one of the case where Nigerian police and human rights activists should wade in.

Politics › Buhari Cannot Be Trusted With Power – Group by neocortex(op): 10:05pm On Jan 06, 2015
A socio-cultural group, Egbe Omo Ibile, on Monday said the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), could not be trusted with power because he “unfairly dealt with many Yoruba leaders during his tenure as Head of State.”

In a statement on Monday by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Shehu Alatishe, the group alleged that the Buhari administration was fraught with human rights abuses.

The group said it was too late for the APC candidate to pretend to love the Yoruba which “he tried so much to muscle in the past because he now wants their favour to become Nigeria president.”

“While in office as Nigeria’s Head of State, Buhari deliberately subjected some Yoruba leaders to serious agony,” the group said.

The statement read, “We bring to question the basis for the maltreatment of Governor of the old Ondo State, Pa Adekunle Ajasin, who never recovered from the experience following his incarceration by the Buhari government despite getting a clean bill from the courts.
