Let me add my opinion to the matter. I am born and raised in the UK. I lived in Nigeria for about year in life for NYSC. I am still in contact with many of the friends made during that time but let me be honest. 99% make contact when they need money. Now, I have no hard feelings but in can be quite tiring, so some may be trying to avoid that conversation. Some genuinely don't make the time. This was the biggest adjustment when I lived in Nigeria, I felt Nigerians were laid back in their interactions. I thought they didn't value time. I am so used to planning my daily schedule to the minute which makes me quite inflexible. I don't have time for 20 mins phone call, or WhatsApp chats that are not productive. I think that once some Nigerians arrive abroad, they naturally fall into that lifestyle. I have extended family in the UK that I only speak to occasionally. I have an Uncle in the same UK who I haven't seen in 2 years or so. Doesn't me that we don't care for each other but the social life dynamics are different to Nigeria.

My father left for the UK that year. He always emphasized that he was never desperate to leave Nigeria,
IBB destroyed the Nigerian middle class in my opinion. The structural adjustment program was a mess. It completely destroyed the purchasing power of that social class.

I served in Nigeria about 6 years ago. So I got a glimpse of the situation. I'm grateful for the society I've grown up in. My biggest gripe with Nigeria is necessarily the deficiencies in infrastructure but the "dog eats dog" mentality that so many people have.

Interesting question. It doesn't apply to me because I was born abroad. However, if I was to asked my parents they would say family. For instance, my mother never knew the day she left Nigeria and waved her dad away would be last time she would see him again. My father came to the UK during the early 80s, lost both his parents in the mid-80s. No such thing as camera phones or Skype etc back then so contact was limited.

Whilst Mr Adesina's comments are indeed ridiculous. I personally don't think Buhari has been as bad as made out to be. I think he has been average (maybe a 5/10). The problem his government had was the unexpected recession driven by the crash in oil prices in 2014. I do think if Jonathan had continued, the hardship would have been much worse.

So when my relatives state that I shouldn't travel by road, they weren't playing around. How common are these kidnappings along Lagos-Benin route?

I am travelling to Nigeria later in the year and I intend to visit my grandfather's hometown in the Esan region, Edo State. The problem with flight is once one gets to Benin, I need to find a car for the remainder of the journey (50 mins-ish). Initially, the plan was to use car (due to the door to door convenience and can also bring goods) but this is getting ridiculous. I thought the my main worry would be bad driving/accidents but the way things are going....I might even cancel the visit to Edo.

Every time I read about the youth employment situation in Nigeria I just SMH. I finished serving Autumn 2014, then I traveled back to the UK. Started working in January 2015 as a Rail Consultant and have been in employment since. I still have friends from NYSC that I'm in touch with, some managing with teaching jobs others still in unemployment! (either doing bet9ja or commission selling). It's painful to think about as I know these are people who are hardworking and have the brain. I look at the experiences I've managed to gain in that time (e.g. published a research paper) and I'm still relatively young at 27.

One thing I will say though is it's true what they say...connections are quite important but this has been the case for decades. A close NYSC friend of mine managed to get a job at the CBN, although it took a while another that I went to the same Uni with in the UK, has been working for a bank for roughly as long as I've been working.
However I would also like to appeal to many of you to stay focused. I've also seen a number of people get into workforce by giving themselves an advantage. For example, LinkedIn can be a great resource, a Nigerian graduate contacted me enquiring about job opportunities in my sector. I told him I wasn't based in Nigeria but directed him to a couple of companies he should try writing to. Some months later, he actually got a job I believe with one of these companies.

That was such an awkward post. Not really something to flaunt about in my opinion.

How long have you been dating? If you've known her for a while, I doubt piercings will change her character.

The only it tells me is that she must be quite strong willed considering how judgmental Nigeria is. What I'm trying to say is that piercings don't make you a bad person. It however may be the case that your values are not compatible.

Not everybody can live Nigeria nor will everybody. Best thing is to focus on your life in Nigeria, if the opportunity to move abroad comes along and it logically seems beneficial (not all this nonsense rants by youths that have little to offer in the 1st place), then go for it. Bad idea IMO to make your sole goal in life to move outside Nigeria, setting yourself up for disappointment.

I've struggled with that word happiness for a while. Its something that we pursue that really means nothing.

What can be considered happiness? The positive emotions you feel when something good happens or a mood thing?

Its not self evident that life is something to make man happy.
Here and there, you feel on top of the world and the next day you come crashing down.

You don't need to scratch beyond the surface to find something that will trouble you for the next 24 hours.
You solve that and something larger rears its head.

If contentment is what you consider as happiness; maybe that's valid but that's not what most people see it as.
For most is a constant rush of positive emotions which is never sustainable and leads to even steeper falls

Contentment is my happiness, understanding and accepting who I am as an individual has allowed me to make huge strides in life over the last few years. I know my strengths and weaknesses and embrace them, I am not in competition with anybody nor trying to emulate anyone. My goal in life is to be the best version of myself.

I feel that "true" happiness is lies with contentment in who we are. It's the mental aspect. From my observations, a lot of people are rushing into marriage when they are not even happy themselves, thinking that it will fill the void in their lives. If you were unhappy with yourself before marriage, this won't change afterwards.

I don't blame them but find it bizarre that one can put marriage before overall happiness. It's like there is more focus on the idea of being marriage rather than what it truly entails. Nigeria is very "clique" society, there are certain expectation based on who you are. I just find it surprising the strong grip it has on people's choices.

The obsession with marriage among Nigerian females is something I still struggle to understand. Admittedly, I never grew up in Nigeria but I was baffled when I came over (for NYSC) to see the number of females that saw marriage as the immediate next step. Forget the career aspect for a second, what about ones personal development and growth? There is never a "right" time for marriage but there are surely better suited times. However at the end of the day, to each is own. No right or wrong way to live this life when it comes to deciding between marriage or career. Some may believe marriage will bring that needed personal growth.

OP, I don't mean to sound harsh but the question you need to answer for yourself is "what do you have to offer?".
As from the way you described yourself, I don't see why you be attracting such men.
I think the problem you have is that Nigeria is quite a "clique" society. You need to find a way to enter into this circle. Have you had any opportunities to attend professional conferences through work?

I wonder what the average male height in Nigeria is for you to feel that awkward at 6'2. Not sure what advice to give here but I don't think "height" is the reason for you self-esteem issues.

I've previously tried contacting senators, government officials and even state house of assembly members (this year) via e-mail and I never even received an acknowledgment of my emails. Only Babajide Sanwo-Olu personally responded (or a member of his staff) with a tailored e-mail that actually answered my queries. Kudos to him. I have yet to try calling phone numbers though.

We each have our own paths. Life doesn't end at 30. Some even change careers at 50. You and your cousin are different people, you most likely don't have the same personality or skillsets. So why the comparison?

I'm fortunate I never had such experiences. Just focus on making the best of your life. The only person you are competing with is yourself. It is natural to look at others but always remember their background and circumstances are different from yours.

It's simple, unfortunately locs don't have a positive stereotype particularly in Nigeria.

Who else will be using the airport? 90% will be either indigenes or residents of the state. 10% (probably less) business/tourist travelers from across Nigeria. Of course tomorrows flight would be fully booked, it's the opening weekend! In 2 months, 8 months time etc will be show the true pattern.

I can just about understand why this senator would say this, as it is likely he benefited personally during the regime as with quite a few. However this forum really shows you the mentality of Nigerians. The fact that his "so called" economic achievements have overridden his disgusting human right records (RIP Ken Saro Wiwa, Alfred Rewane and others) tells me all I need to know. My hope is that Nairaland represent an irrelevant 5% of the population.

I find projects like these funny. It comes across as one of national pride rather than economic development. What's the percentage of Akwa Ibomites that will use this Airport, 4% maybe. Even within these 4%, how may will be frequent travelers (monthly)? Are these 4% going to be enough to cover the monthly operating costs? I'm not saying there is a right or wrong to opening an airport, just that it is an intriguing decision.
