Double edged sword. Sometimes to address a topic or respond to an individual properly one needs to know in what context one is speaking or to what kind of audience. It can potentially reduce the poisonous vitriol if for instance your audience are in essence toddlers, however it can also become more personal, more intimate and more dangerous. Hey, if it isn't broken, shut the toolbox. |
In theory what he's saying is that my constituency has serious issues with road safety rules and officials and I have been mandated to handle the matter with urgency and expediency. If not his colleagues should show him the door and his constituency replace him. Surely he cannot be the only learned fellow from that locale. |
It all depends on the belief system you operate in. Simply put, if you believe it has an effect, it WILL have an effect negatively or positively respectively. If you don't operate a belief system it will have NO effect. Its like the famous 'why does black magic not cross international boundaries' or why do some fall easily for 419 and others do not. Simple. Those that fall believe what they hear or read is true. So for serious Christians and Muslims who have strong belief systems, what things are called is an important aspect of their faith and everyday living. Even in circular systems product naming is important in branding with a view to the captive market and companies spend millions seeking the right name for their products. There have been celebrated product failures on account of misnomers in the annals of marketing. Once again it is the belief system. If a fizzy drink was named 'Agbo' does it change the taste, no. The top ten richest men and women in the world were probably not named gold and silver neither do I think Adolf Hitler means mass murderer in german. |
That's what Murtala was doing until they caught up with him at Obalende. The rest is history. Madam be flying commercial. You know your people well. |
klairekk: Have any of you been to Niger State? For you information IBB worked well n bears a positive image that wil run in his family for generations.Okay. |
naptu2: Gen Buhari is on nairaland proclaiming that Abacha is a saint. There are people who believe that Babangida is a saint. He hasn't been convicted of anything. He is seen as a hero by many in Niger State.Okay, so like sunshine, the intensity of felony is directly proportional to the square of the distance between the felon and the general public and inversely proportional to the tangent of the location of his kinsmen. That is why I say we are not ready to tackle corruption. We better attend to geography and perhaps mathematics first. |
PhysicsQED: The point of this thread is that it's foolish and embarrassing to name a university after a known rogue, even if he's one of your people. I don't understand why they can't grasp that. You don't understand yet you see folks jumping up and down everyday shouting corruption. I don't think there's a simpler mathematical equation out there. |
Well, as long as they are not elected officials its perfectly okay. Who cares. |
Orikinla: When the brave children of the poor were protesting on Ikorodu Road for June 12, the children of MKO Abiola were not among them.Don't be so harsh. He lost his lovely wife to state hit men.Should he have placed his kids on the altar too. Looking at the way he's been dissed today the question you should be asking is, was it worth it. |
Overall, some good suggestions from Tinubu.
Agreed. He spoke well as a leader and offered very good suggestion. I think matters like these transcend partisan politics. It should be a time when all sides reach across the gulf. Every politician and every lover of democracy owes MKO. I've said it before. Sani could have offered him anything to forgo his mandate. He did not and died for it. Nothing is worth more than life. |
majojolo: People of the swarm and forest, why don't you mind your business to hunting and fishing (in style) rather than making bad comments on a respected leader like BUHARI. Buhari is million times better than whoever your selfish mind prefer. Do you know your problem educated illiterates? You lack 'HOME TRAINING AND DISCIPLINE'. You don't respect people with integrity, you only respect BEAST like you upon all the suffering you people are facing. There is limit to bad people whether bunch of BEAST like it or not. SAI BUHARI (the name that frightens enemies). If our political and governance system worked well you don't need to call on Buhari to deliver you from the evil PDP (because Jonathan will go one day) you will stand for office and make an impact yourself. So stop chasing people and seek to change the system where you will be empowered and effectual. Tell me if Buhari retires does it mean the hope of this country goes with him. Nigeria is bigger than any person and will outlive any interests. As far as I am concerned we are moving forward politically and socially. To me those are more important than who is in Aso Rock. The things we say and express about our leaders today we could not have done in 1983. |
diesel86: When some pple talk i start doubting if these country has a future. if i may ask, at this crtical period of these nations existence what do we need? |
diesel86: When some pple talk i start doubting if these country has a future. if i may ask, at this crtical period of these nations existence what do we need?Discipline and anti-corruption are not the foundations of any society, any gathering or any association. Justice and equity are. The shaping of society starts with the elimination of class difference and the opening up of the aspirations of all the peoples of such an association. It starts with the man in the north, east, west or south admitting he can be the FAITHFUL follower of a leader from any part of the country. Then you can start talking discipline and anti-corruption. A simple analogy. When robbers strike at a household in the dead of night seeking to pilfer, kill and maim. What do you think will be running through the minds of the children of the house and the servants of the house. Carefully consider this in the context of Nigeria and place your priorities properly. |
mike404: People don"t seem to understand what this whole boko haram imbroglio is all about. the bitter truth is that this whole escalation of the boko haram scourge is directly related to the results of the 2011 presidential elections. the conservative northern elite have analyzed the voting pattern and discovered the unfolding scenario of nigeria"s political reality. they northern leaders seem to have reached the conclusion that the votes president jonathan got from the northern part of nigeria to roundly beat the northern candidates came largely from christian votes resident in the north. they seem to have concluded that henceforth, southern candidates who are mostly christians, can get the statutory geographical spread to win future presidential elections with or without the support of the conservative northern political elite. they see this as a potential end to their stranglehold on nigeria"s political, and economic life wire. so they seem to have decided to take decisive action to remedy the situation.these escalations by boko haram are not primarily to make nigeria ungovernable for president jonathan. the devious plan seems to be a decimation of the christian population in such a way that by 2015 when national elections will hold again, the emerging pool of northern christian votes would have been neutralized. the boko haram attacks are directed at achieving the following aims. first, the persistent attacks against christians, and churches will have a direct impact on christian evangelism and church growth. this will result in a halt in the growth of the christian population in the north. secondly, the incessant attacks which have heightened insecurity in the north will make southern christians resident up north to take flight and relocate from the north to the south. thirdly , christiansI don't think Buhari gave any orders for any killings. The political situation in the north goes beyond him and his ambitions. But good take nonetheless. You understand certain issues quite well. |
Jenams: Why r we so disorganised I̶̲̥̅̊n dis country? Every man wants τ̅o champion his course & take glory. What stops us frm havin a one unified identification means I̶̲̥̅̊n nigeria? ǰUSΤ ONE! Instead of waistin resources here & there wit ineffective numerous existin B.S!I mean in its simplest form. What if I'm known to the police as Mr. Alligator and to the bank as Mr. Crocodile, is it not a technicality that can unshackle me from a fraud charge ?. I salute his efforts but he is trying too hard, building a banking sector that has very poor societal foundations. Unfortunately if he ventures beyond his cash tower he will be accused of politiking and encroaching on executive, legislative or judicial territory. Abi is the CBN an arm of government. |
aieromon: Another brand new series on the way. We've not finished talking about the National Identity card scam and they want this. What happened to all the data captured in the past two years?I mean it is becoming a terrible situation. You can imagine the number of cards I have. Multiple identity cards government, business, smart cards - 5 bank cards, passport, licenses. Then all the passcodes which I have to store on my laptop and encode again. I mean its terrible. The worst is having to lose any one of this cards, the process of getting them replaced is a marathon. More cards, no. Consolidation, yes. Let him speak and consult broadly before setting these his deadlines. He brought KYC last year. We told him to think through. Today it has proven ineffectual. Identity issues don't stand on one leg. They have many inputs. That's why when you are born they do naming ceremony where witnesses abound. You pop doesn't just wake up to call you Sanusi, the way Mr. Lamido wants to. |
Still too early to discern what is happening here but I think this is one identity card too many. What he should be doing is pushing for the adoption of a unitary identification system that all agencies - police, road safety, immigration, electoral, tax, banking and so on can tap into. He's started off by soliciting the national identity agency, it will probably end up a banking only thing when other agencies fail to tag along. |
I havd a friend in PH who builds vessels of the utmost quality for the oil industry. All he imports are the propulsion and navigation systems. You will be surprised what Nigerians are capable of when they can focus and take their minds off some of the kinds of rubbish talk found on this forum. Our attitude most of the time is responsible for exactly what we have become. Ship building is not new in Nigeria. I've been hearing about Snake Island since I was a kid. Why the place has not grown into a proper enterprise surprises me. Now, someone is doing something about it and it still attracts snide remarks. Sorry. |
manny4life: Na wa for Nigerians, if we manufacture locally, they will say it's fake and call it names, when we import, they will blame govt for poor EXIM policies, say, why can't we produce back home and why is govt not protecting local manufacturers?Nothing more to say, so sad. |
Okay, another equation that has defied logic for 52 years. What can be done to turn Nigeria into a country. |
Why not 140 million states so we can each have our own. This country is fast heading for bankruptcy. |
There is a current scarcity of real quality managers out there at the moment to fit a club with such history and status. I honestly think this move is hasty. They should have waited till the end of the Euro's for a few of those top managers who may become available. It is evident that the only way to return to trophies fast is to hire abroad. The Di Matteo, young gun magic is not common. It is not found in everyone. Liverpool is definitely gambling here. |
icez: Why is there no love for MKOI mean I am totally flabbergasted. Can you imagine how people are queuing up to rubbish the man that made it possible for them to even speak up, in his own constituency for that matter. There are some things that just defy reason. This is indeed a strange reason. Selfishness and expediency no go kill us sha. |
When he MKO was battling Sani was there any legislature to do stuff. He fought for the establishment of the legislature. They owe him and will make an exception on this error but it is surprising why this issue cannot cross party lines and garner even the least sympathy from Nigerians. I agree with a poster. The best 'brand' meets the criteria. All of us left should feel the pain of our bruised ego and make the necessary sacrifices. I think this is more honourable. I am not against politicization but certain things transcend them. GEJ has many, many other sockets of faults for the opposition to plug into. |
Sayfat: To the proponent and the supporters of gej imbecilic n moronic renaming of unilag, u r all suffering from political history amnesia. Was the name abiola synonymous to academic? What was his contribution to educational sector while he was alive? Must we play politics with everything? Does gej embarked on due consultation before he arrived at his illogical calculation of renaming unilag after a supposed hero of democraZy? ABIOLA was known as political martry, politics was his immediate constituency, so , if he should be immortalised at all ASO ROCK sud be name after him n not our cherished citadel of learning(unilag) a place i doubt he ever visited when he was alive. If you care to know, the political haters of abiola is at work in collaboration with gej to cast aspersion on what so ever this 'political hero' myt av achieved. NAIJA lets think.Ah, if you don't know what Abiola contributed to education, what he spent on universities and what he gave to UNILAG? in particular, then you must be too young to scope this thread properly. Take it from me, I have major issues with MKO but this is a recognition for his role in the take-off of democracy, no more, no less. To those who say the name is a prestigious, well known brand and as such should not be touched, how I wish the man honoured took the money, dissolved his party and went home. Most certainly no one today will be calling the military government names. In those days the ivory towers were symbols of the quest for democracy, today they cannot even sacrifice pride to honour it. Superior brand name indeed. |
I personally think there is a disconnect somewhere. In the first place I don't think it should be the state's responsibility to build pedestrian bridges. That local government and councils are better at adjudging such needs and standards. If the people who live and work around such localities want escalators, moving side walks and the lot, they should discuss such with their council and perhaps put the money down to provide these comforts. Within states the chief executive will be hard pressed to defend such expenditure particularly if he cannot reproduce such standards statewide. Now I happened to have passed through Ota a while ago and all accesses were quite frankly atrocious. How will those folks feel about this. Our public officials are experts at making things difficult for themselves. |
Silva79: God what exactly is our offence? Why do we have useless and senseless pple in government? Why why why why...i'm just tired of dis country Nah dear. Thou has not sinned, neither has thy father or father's furtherest father, but so that the glory of God might be made manifest. This country. |
udhedhe: This student do not know what they want, MKO Abiola university of Lasgos still have UNILAG in the name so am just amazed at them. They should just take UNILAg out of the full name and carry on beside is it the name or Degree they want to earn. That is our value system. Name over substance, kpali over knowledge. Sorry. And we thought that they were in a hurry to graduate. If Harvard is changed to Barack Obama University - BOUNTY, don't go. |
VEE2010: Who knows if this is an attempt to blackmail the probe panel just to distract our attention. There's no gain saying the fact that most Nigerian politicians/civil/public servants are so smart most especially in this kind of attitude just to get away with their loots. I just pray the Lord would open our eyes to see beyond the usual talks we hear most times. This is what we are saying. Sir, the worst disservice you can do is to create doubt. It kills momentum, it distracts and makes any hope of change impossible. If people cannot collectively speak and act against these things but wait for a messiah to clean their toilets for them it will not happen. Talk like this does not help. |
omo alaro: Ofcourse there is: stop being sentimental. Vote for Buhari. He is the only man remaining on the side of the people. He could as well join them, remain quiet and take his share. He has refused to join them. Yet common people refuse to see this while looters join forces to fight and denigrade his name.Vote him as what, as a senator or to head the senate. What control will any man have over the legislature. It appears you don't know how democracies work. My friend don't work to have a messiah to clean the country, work to clean it up yourself. If those men cannot be recalled or removed by the PEOPLE they represent they will remove anyone who opposes them including a Buhari in ANY capacity. That is how democracies work. The reason why Baba is bitter towards them is exactly what has just happened. They ate his bribes and still threw him out. You think these fellows fear the EFCC or any colouration of President. The only way Buhari is going to succeed is for his party to gain an overwhelming majority in both house and not just anybody but at least three hundred people that think like him. Where do you get that and who will vote for them. Pally, relax. Corruption will end when Nigerians, not Buhari says so. |
