You must also realise that some of these donations are eye-service that is key to getting contracts and favors from the government. Also, it is a PR move. In the next few years, they will tell investors and the general public how they helped Nigerians during the Covid-19 crisis. Everything is well-calculated and factored out.

There will be a global recession, and it makes no sense to have a bloated workforce. In the end, I blame China for all these.
As a matter of fact, donations made towards covid-19 by corporate bodies and individuals are tax deductible, meaning that when it comes to paying their corporate taxes these donors can (and trust me, they will) deduct the donations made from the tax payable. Hence, most of these donations are actually prepaid taxes in the real sense of it and not "donations".

You are now making inferences.

If you didn't know the law then you shouldn't have been so confident to the extent of saying government is responsible. You should have asked questions rather than passing a judgement because judgement ought to be from knowledge.

To start with, in which part of the world have you seen the names of the patients or dead people made public?

Unless the people on their own waive the right or it's a case which has other factors.

I don't even know why you need the names of people dying from a disease before believing that the disease exists.
Instead of the back and forth, just politely ask him to give you the names of the people that Lassa fever has killed.

Can I ask a question pls, for those who think the lockdown should be called off, can suggest brilliant ideas to implement to contain further spread if everyone goes about their normal daily routines?
There are no 2 ways to it. If the lockdown should continue, government should sincerely and aggressively, make palliatives available to the citizens so that they do not die of hunger.

If government cannot make the palliatives available, they should enforce the use of nose masks and handwashing in corporate organizations and markets.

W.H.O have said that the virus is going to be around for a long time, so the question is "how long can you lockdown the people and the economy".

Mind you, I supported the lockdown in the short term but it is a no no for longer than a month without catering for the people.

If man can survive war with little food, why can't we just do the same now and battle the chain of Covid-19? I hope people won't learn in a harder way.
What advantage(s) have we taken of the current lockdown?

While lockdown maybe beneficial, it has to be a part of an overall strategy. The necessary twin step of lockdown is rapid testing. But how many people have we tested since lockdown?!

At this testing rate, Lagos and Abuja may need to be on lockdown for 8 months, God forbid.

You cannot keep people at home for more than a month without palliatives. Even countries with better per capita income understand this basic principle.

Besides, what sense does it make when you force people to stay at home and government officials paid with tax payers money didn't think twice before attending a burial ceremony that is capable of escalating infections and there are no sanctions as we speak.

Foolishness in high places is what is on display!

Tragic.

To be candid though, I'd rather put the blame on the failed government than on the medical personnel. The behaviour of the medical personnel towards the man's wife is a fallout of the government's refusal to provide them with equipment for fighting this virus.
Why did it take the hospital hours to wear their PPE and attend to the patient?
This is one death too many. In this particular case, we cannot pin the death on government.

At least the man mentioned that it took the medical staff like forever to wear their ppe. So they eventually wore the ppe after the woman died.

This is unprofessional.

May the Good Lord grant her soul eternal rest and for the husband and children, I pray for them to have the fortitude to bear the loss. cry

If only we didn't have a docile, clueless, and irresponsible government!

Our only HOPE is in God, regardless of what atheists want to have you believing.
Blame the government as much as you want but blame the citizens more.

After government through NCDC advised us to keep social distance, some people chose to go and exercise in their numbers on the highways.

Some were throwing parties with reckless abandon.

And some of us chose to believe it was "audio".

Some churches were holding services and some mosques were holding jumaat services with full attendance.

Any sane mind could predict the direction we were headed given our lack of discipline!

But we have to continue picking on Nigerian scammers because we are Nigerians and that's what affect our image as Nigerians.

Chinese and Indians can continue scamming people and earning bad names for themselves, that shouldn't be our focus.

Nigerians cannot be claiming bad leadership as being responsible for their poor statuses only for them to go out to countries with good leaders and working systems only to resort to scams and other vices instead of making use of the new opportunities in those environments to make money legitimately.

I guess, that is why the foreign minister said they would have to bring in the returnees in batches.

Maybe you should read the post again, the young woman developed an infection (separate) after delivery, already the mortality of infection after childbirth is high. The testing positive for the virus does not in any way validate it as the cause of death.
Thanks for your mature response.

Sadly, puerperal infections can be caused by both bacterias (E. Coli, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus) and viruses (HPV, Corona Virus, Influenza).

Again, puerperal infections, either bacterial or viral can cause sepsis.

The sadder fact is that, while bacterial infections have treatments viral infections do not have treatments and have to run their cause, hence puerperal infections of viral nature are more probable to be fatal.

Hence, if the clinicians who handled her case have determined that Corona virus was responsible for the sepsis that led to her death you cannot fault them in attributing her death to Corona Virus.

The relationship between sepsis and covid-19 or Corona virus is that Corona virus (a viral family of flu) can cause sepsis.

Every death is covid.
If every death is being attributed to COVID-19, they would be attributing about 6,356 deaths per day to covid because an estimated 6,356 Nigerians die per day
(using 365 days in a year and assuming a total population of 200 million people)

This is based on the annual national death rate of 11.6 per 1000 per annum as of 2019 when there was no global pandemic.

The total number of deaths attributed to Corona virus as of today (since 2 to 3 weeks ago) in Nigeria is about 7 to 8 or thereabouts.

So I find it laughable when Nigerians say that the authorities are attributing all deaths in Nigeria to Corona virus.

The report never said that the returning 127 tested positive, I don't know where you got that from.

The report said that the returning 127 were tested.

110 tested negative and were released to go and join their families.

17 tested positive and government took them in for management

Of the 17, 1 was released previously and another 10 released; having tested negative twice to the test.

I admit that the lockdown isn't easy for a lot of Nigerians. However, I disagree that it is the lockdown that is causing theft and robberies in your community. It is people who wanted to steal that are capitalizing on the lockdown.

To get my perspective, I know from your narrative that you have just been recently employed and you are yet to collect your salary, so understandably things are tough for you. But I believe that you would never resort to theft or robbery even if things get tougher.

The people that the robbers are coming to attack in your community, are things not tough for them or are they immuned to the economic effects of this lockdown? So why have they not started robbing others?

Thieves would always be thieves!

The ignorant and ungrateful people thought she's representing the government so they abused and insulted the government for giving them rice with not enough meat.

This is so true. Several years ago blacks were used as experimental specimens in a syphilis trial in the U.S.A leading to loss of several lives.

It was Obama (President of the United States - as he then was) who apologized for that misadventure much more later.

I don’t mean to sound mean, but some of the active cases may still end in death, so we can’t count them yet. It would be misleading. We can only count the cases that have been concluded.

(Total deaths) / (total discharged + total still being treated who may or may not die) is a meaningless statistic even if that’s what the media has been calculating for other countries. We have to compare like to like.
Seun, your calculation makes a whole of sense. It is statistically more descriptive than the other one which compares apples and oranges.
