You don't have to learn a skill thinking of where you will work. Rather, learn the skill and seek ways to use your acquired skill to solve problems. When you do this, you spot opportunities easily and then you can make as much money as you want.

For instance, Mike Zuckerberg of Facebook didn't learn coding to get employed but he found a way to make money through Facebook. Same thing holds for Seun Osewa of Nairaland.

One thing I can assure you is that if you learn programming diligently, you will make money whether as an employee or as an enterpreneur.

The company is actually a great one, they brought in pychologist to speak with us, bring in different recruiter, and other stuff, most importantly the payoff was reasonable that I can afford a Mac laptop of almost half-a-million

Luckily for me I got another reasonable job in less than 3 weeks of been retrenched


I always laugh when people complain there is no job in Nigeria, less than 5 month after leaving my previous company I have turned down almost 4 other offers some even paying than my current one

The emphasized part of your post is so true. There are jobs in Nigeria, it is just that a lot of people seeking employment opportunities lack skills to add value to their employers. Employers are not "charity organizations", if they pay you x amount they need you to generate 10x amount (10 times whatever you are being paid).

I have been reading all the comments from the first and it seems Nigerians generally dont know their left from their right.
Everyone was coming up with some silly, yahoo-type of ideas.

A person has a constitutional right to quiet enjoyment of their house/home/apartment or place of legitimate abode.
That is the LAW.
The Op paid for the house, he has a right to enjoy it.
Now, it is not the Landlord that is causing him harm, it is the noisy and heartless neighbours.
Govt has setup and agency that deals with excessive environmental noise, from any quarters.

He just needs to involves the agency and make sure they take necessary action.

I had a similar problem with three religious houses in my area. I built my house before these religious houses came to setup shop thus, there is no way l would have known what would happen.
These prayer houses will use a Public adress system, to broadcast music, prayers and all sorts (even internet commentary from their favourite preacher) in the middle of the night. At times, it is only two people in on eof these places and yet they are using oublic adress system to pray!
I went to plead with them that they are causing noise pollution and they should just let the PA system face INSIDE their place of worship and not outside, as we neighbours did not ask to be served whatever they are cooking!
Alas, they tagged me "An enemy of God"!
Even when they are doing their friday prayers, they will be mentioning me on their PA and asking members to pray that something should happen to their father so he can let them be in the area!

I downloaded a Sound Meter on my phones.
I began to detail the magnitude of their noise using the Sound Meter on one phone while doing a video of my actions on another.
At times, i will put on NTA and let it show the date and time of my video recording and there was a time, inside my bedroom, the noise hit 130decibels! No human can take that.
After proper documentation of my efforts to make them see reason and the level of their noise, times, etc, l packaged my Petition, through my lawyer, to LASEMA and the Agency served them Notice of Abatement after which, they would be charged to Court.

Two immediately took notice and reduced the level of noise but one was forming "I know the Presidency"....until he recieved a Court Notice and that is when it dawned on him that l was not joking!
That is when he began to beg and asked that we withdraw the case, because l was also claiming Civil damages at the same time but separately, through my lawyer. Since l dont really need hi smoney, l amde him sign an undertaking not to use a PA System facing outside his place of worship and that at no time must the noise be greater than 35decibels, if l measure it from my end.

Now, l can sleep deeply and think with my head.
My drift is that we should stop taking shortcuts.
The op should inform his Landlord and ask that he speaks with them or refund hi smoney otherwise he should go and report the people responsible for the noise and the landlord, to LASEMA.
Packing out is not the best option because even where you are going might be serene at first, until your neighbour decides to start selling record and blaring his Speakers Will you pack out again?

We need to start prosecuting Churches and Mosques for violating our right to peaceful and quiet existence, include all those poor people who do party on the road, those who sell market and use a big speaker to play unsolicited music, those who operate noisy industries in a residential neighbourhood (mechanics, welders, Grinders, Okadas, noisy area-boys, etc).

What we dont realise is that some of the mad people we see, some of those that jump into the Lagoon, could be a result of mental disturbance occassioned by excessive noise!.
Noise Pollution is not different from smoke pollution or water pollution, all can be deadly if not stopped on time.
We cant keep making excuses for bad behaviour out of fear or reverence for those who dont give a fnck about us.

The things neighbors take for granted in this country are insane.

A friend's neighbour unleashed his dog in a compound of 4 flats and the dog ran after my friend's 6 year old daughter; thankfully the dog didn't bite the poor girl until she was rescued. Can you imagine what would have happened if the girl was bitten?

We should act reasonably in this country and give some consideration to others that might be harmed by our actions or inactions. That is why I always maintain that our leaders aren't the only problem we have.

Forte oil's downturn cannot be hinged on the Nigerian economy. It is like saying that BUA cement's owner became Forbe's billionaire because of Nigeria's buoyant economy.

There are lots of factors that determine if a corporate body would do well or not. Some companies make money both in buoyant and dwindling economies.

The major cause for Otedola's fall from Forbe's list is because of the sharp decrease in the price of Forte Oil and his having to sell his shares from the Company.

I like that we are having a civil discourse. However, I do not see Fashola as someone who gives excuses.

If he said as early as 2017 that 2/3rd of the amount required for Lagos-Ibadan express was cut in the budget and the national assembly agreed with him citing the need to prioritize projects then you can't fault him for the slow speed of the project.

He further asserted that the about 10billion naira provided for that project in the 2017 budget could bearly cater for the 15 billion naira already owed contractors.

This is in sharp contrast to Amaechi's acknowledgement of total provision of counterpart funding for the Lagos-ibadan railway line.

The fact is that the national assembly has the capacity to prioritize and affect the speeds of completion of projects through budgetary provisions.

As governor of Lagos State, Fashola was the poster boy of good governance and quite a number of governors from other states, across party lines, had to understudy some of his projects. At that point, I don't remember him giving excuses.

And please, my submission does not detract from the fact that Amaechi is a wonderful person and has performed well

You are correct to the extent that the railway project has local funding component.

However, what I meant was that because of the Chinese counterpart funding and the consequences of breaching the contract, FG has made available the complete local funding as early as 2017 and there was no need for a yearly back and forth on appropriation and budget defence.

While in the case of the expressway, funds have been made available piecemeal, on a yearly basis. Infact, there were reported instances of the budgeted amount being slashed under the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, as he then was.

Now, I'm not in any way defending Fashola but I just like for us to compare apples to apples. If you, as a person, were to be evaluated for performance and non-performance; I would try to do that vis-a-vis the resources that were made available to you.

Only a fool will open his mouth condemning Amaechi and praising FAshola. FAshola is a monumental failure considering the hype and Amaechi is no doubt the best minister we’ve had since 1999.....bar none! I speak as a Yoruba man. Name a major project FAshola has finished, all he does is go on TV speaking English and theory..if this, then that...deliverables nothing. In the time Amaechi delivered Lagos Ibadan rail from scratch, FAshola has barely improved on what he met on Lagos Ibadan express.

The Lagos-Ibadan railway line and Lagos-Ibadan express way may not be a fair comparison considering the fact that the railway project is fully funded by the Chinese and Amaechi wouldn't be hindered by funding and budgetary process while the Ibadan expressway is funded by the Nigerian government and it has to go through appropriation. Knowing how slow our budgetary procceses are and coupled with the fact that the national assembly may not appropriate as much as is fairly required for a project in a fiscal year, then you may want to cut BRF some slack.

A lot of Nigerians are working their hands to the bones to make ends meet. How many people will government compensate? How many would government give jobs? There has been ban on importation of some goods and that has affected a lot of importers; how would government compensate those categories?

Refer to my emphasis. Nigeria is failed partly because of irresponsible parenting. In the 60s and prior to the 90s, parents gave birth indiscriminately expecting the state to care for the children via free education, free health care service. While they were giving births indiscriminately, they were consuming their resources and that of their future generations.

They destroyed all institutions without thinking of how to bake a larger cake.

U.S and other developed countries are the way they are because their citizens have learnt to be responsible; they give birth to the number of children they can care for inspite of the several social support available to the poor in those communities.

I have read the article and while I agree with the facts, I dispute the conclusion. The desire for foreign foodstuff and clothes is not a simply function of fx pricing rates. It is a function of irrational desire for all that is foreign. The writer of the article wrote from the standpoint of logical economics without adding any behavioral finance elements that would have made his article realistic.

What the new border policy does is give pause to those who have 1. Chosen to make all things foreign their badge of honour and 2. Those who supply their whims.

You may remember that at a time the juice market in Nigeria was dominated by Just Juice. Today following a ban and the inevitable poor quality of the product caused time period of time/poor storage of the product, we now have several local varieties valued at billions of naira and employing or distributing value to hundreds of thousands of Nigerians with multiplier effects to millions.

The long term change is a change in consumption patterns through deprivation of immediate gratification and the existence of viable local alternatives. It is not a "whack a mole" strategy. Anyone who has played that game knows that there is no strategy to it other than knee jerk reactions. The policy of import substitution is key to the future of the Nigerian economy. Creating a disconnect between demand and supply puts Nigeeia on a "cold turkey" withdrawal from its foreign origin drug.

The complaints we have now are merely the withdrawal symptoms of drug addicts on the mend. We "go soon dey alright"
