This is a step in the right direction. The states can now deny receipt of the items or otherwise.

We should now mount pressure on the states to make disclosure of disbursements of the items.

Do you know how long it took Nigeria to build up our foreign reserves even after pleading like beggars to our lenders to write off our debts under OBJ and Okonjo Iweala?

This sounds attractive but it will just kill the Nigerian economy.

If the 100k is meant for people below the poverty line and we assume 70% of 200
million Nigerians to be living below the poverty line; it means 140 million Nigerians
would be given 100k each.

That means that the Nigerian government would need to fork out 1.4 trillion Naira to 70% of Nigerians to buy groceries and some other consummables for 2 weeks lockdown.

Now compare that to the fact that, the entire budget of Nigeria for Jan - Dec 2020, is 10.59 trillion Naira. And the sums include recurrent and capital expenditure for the whole year (for emphasis) and not for groceries alone.

Again, giving out such amount will wipe out our entire foreign reserves which stood at $37.5 billion at the end of Feb 2020 (according to allafrica.com).

In the Lagos case, there was no crater that would have been the epicenter of a bomb blast. So the Lagos' case was most likely not a bomb blast. Note, a crater exists in this case of ondo.

Those that are too learned to accept that the federal government can effect such lockdown, should sue the government after they have survived this pandemic and the courts are reopened to entertain such learned survivors.

I do not have a problem with the legality or otherwise of a curfew. And yes, that's what this is, a curfew. It is essentially not a lockdown or forced quarantine but a curfew. The problem with curfew tests with its enforcement. It means our law enforcement agents would have a field day deciding who have breached it or who hasnt

When you escalate such scenarios, there are millions of people that desperately would need help. They may not have enough to survive for 14days. Even rich people amongst us may discover he may need some vital food items after 10 days. Those that would like to go out to buy food and eat, how would the enforcement treat them. Would they find sellers? Would they have enough money to buy vital items

What of those that fall desperately sick within this period. Would they get transportation to seek help. Would anyone come to their aid seeing as there is a curfew?

I do not think we have experienced such a situation before. Personally I would have advocated for a week curfew and thereafter we assess how far it has helped and decide on how to proceed. Most businesses and people have been on hold for upwards of 10 days already and a blanket curfew for another 14 days, even if sensible, would result in a cruel and unusual punishment for a vast number of poor people

We would find that despite the lip service of providing some audio relief materials, most of these poor people would be on their own

I honestly appreciate your honesty. I remember reading your comment condemning the failure of PMB to address the nation before his national broadcast and I must say that your condemnation was justified.

So, I am pleasantly surprised that you are expressing shock at the misadventure of some people here who are complaining about his directives on total lock down of Lagos and Abuja.

What is clear to me, is that while some of us, genuinely criticize the President because we need him to act true to his office, some people just criticize and even wish evil to befall the country out of their hatred for the man; it is pathetic.

I have come across few people who have tried using the coronavirus to defraud.. of course many will trace the blame to govt.. we can't be moving round the circle

There are many who are angry but channel that anger toward doing something positive.. to change the system..someone here channel his own anger toward helping those oppressed by the security agencies.. and he is fine.. but some will channel the anger toward chaos..

I know we need to rejig but I do not think we are helping anyone if we allow ourselves to lose our minds..

The most precious possession we have and which oppressors tried to take over is not our money.. it is not our tax.. it is not our job.. it is not political power.. it is certainly not looting...

...it is our mind! I don't know why many will find this harder but I can tell.that people who are in control of their mind can never be brainwashed nor fall for any deceit.. they will know when to get angry and when to act..

There is something in our reaction to negative things..

Do we have the penchant to react or respond?

Let me pause and give u an example..

A man went to the airport..his flight was delayed even though he is already running late.. everyone affected in that same airport was ranting and blaming everything in the world.. the airline.. the govt.. whatever.. and some were kicking.. but this man was calm.. even though he is about to lose a lot of money.

One of the attendants at the airport who was obviously on a mocking mission then went to this man.. she saw him smiling ... and reading calmly while others are agitated and pacing around..

So she feel.. maybe the man didn't know what had happened.. she said.. master..your flight has been cancelled...

The man looked up from the book he was reading and replied.. fantastic!

The woman was speechless..

She came back again later.. and said.. hotels booking had been exhausted.. that there is no more space ..

The man again replied.. fantastic!

This time the women was now ones that is upset instead of the other way..

Finally.. she went back again and send another bad news.. and the man replied fantastic..

Unable to understand..

She asked . Mister..every time I come with bad news u say fantastic.. what is fantastic about this?

The man replied..

U see.. my flight has been cancelled.. there is nothing else I can do ..i already lost an appointment.. the natural thing for me to do is pace up and done and blame like everyone there.. the appointment is lost already.. my pacing up and down or cursing can't bring it back

Then what of the hotel? She asked..

He smiled again and responded.. the hotel have all been booked.. again I could rant and wail and curse.. but here I am.in one of the most expensive and safest airports in the world... free of charge and I have time to rebook my appointment and to read and more..

This time the woman was really impressed and learned a lot from it.

In this story.. what i want to say is that there will always be bad news.. bad leaders and negative unpleasant circumstances.. most of which we can't do anything about..

Many years ago.. as a student.. i learned one of the most valuable lesson from Dale Carniegie works..

Let me quote him.. *as you and I match across the decades of time, we are going to meet a lot of unpleasant situations that are so. They cannot be otherwise. We have our choice. We can either accept them as inevitable and adjust ourselves to them or we can ruin our lives with rebellions and maybe end up with a nervous breakdown*

With that mindset..u will set out to begin to.purge your mind and control it rather than let outward events..anger..and propaganda of others control your mind for you..

Many think they are smarter and wiser by playing to the tune of those who hijack their mind and turn them into kaleidoscope of social confusion.

I tell u.. the only solution to Nigeria problem is to look within.. first take charge of your own mind.. this way u can reason clearly without being influenced by others..

Once u have done this.. find like mind who are equally solution conscious..

The efforts of oppressor is to take control of your mind.. either.making u dissipate energy on ranting and wailing.. they know that if u have focus and able to think.of solution u will.upstage them and surprise them.

Protect your mind from being hijacked.. whether by politicians or bad news or propaganda.. you must do everything to ensure this for you and your family...only by this can u have clear.mind to focus on how to beat that enemy that has taken over your joy.

I find this post interesting and I recommend it to anyone interested in learning to deal with chaos.

I totally agree with you that we have lots of lessons that we need to learn with respect to religions too.

I deliberately didn't touch on that here because of the sensitivity that Nigerians attach to it.

If you read one or two of my earlier posts on the subject on another thread, you will see where I had hinted at the role of over religiousness (if you permit) in the escalation of this outbreak.

2 weeks ago before we even have barely 3 cases, I said it Nigeria will shock the world soon.
In a bid to stock my house early with some foodstuffs, a visit to the market and people were making jokes about persons wearing face masks, some were jokingly praying and saying we survive Ebola, Lassa.... Blablabla this one nor get head.

Just saying Nigerians are dead stubbon and this outbreak will make or break us. I can't imagine what a chaos situation will be like when we have over 20,000 cases.

My biggest prayer now is for a vaccine. That's my prayer now.

I can imagine! We joke with everything and anything in this country.

I had a similar experience in a market in Lagos too where one middle aged man was misinforming the market women about the existence of the virus. He was telling them that COVID-19 is audio. I was annoyed and almost engaged him, because I could see that most of the women would let down their guards and not maintain preventive measures as they had been misled that the virus didn't exist thereby endangering their lives and that of their contacts.

This COVID-19 is a wake-up call to all Nigerians to change their ways:

1 It is a wake up call to our thieving leaders to stop embezzling funds that are meant to fund hospitals and other projects

2. It is a wake up call to citizens to get more serious with encouraging Science, Technological, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) development in Nigeria. Let us reduce our fixation on Big Brother Naija (BBN) and other inanities. Perhaps, if we had invested the time, funds and energy that we invested in such, we could have had a fighting chance of rapidly developing our local testing kits without having to wait for the white folks.

3. It is lesson for corporate organizations to take adequate interest in the health and well being of their customers; because when your customers and prospects are afflicted your business will feel the heat.

In the face of a communicable pandemic when we should reduce contact, against authorities' advise; some mega churches held services with several congregants, some more Muslim faithfuls still thronged mosques for prayers, an "A" class musician still had a show with several people present, a Governor had a political rally and people are still throwing naming ceremony parties!

With this our nonchalance, we shouldn't blame anybody for whatever befalls us.

I don't understand why we we need to be abusive to deal with our leaders' deficiencies.

Infact, I have studied this trait for some years now and I can say that most times when we start abusing them, we lose our cool and fail to ask the right questions. Hence, we lose the opportunity to engage leadership so as to achieve better governance.

Whenever we start going personal on our leaders, we drive a wedge between us and them and introduce noise into the communication system such that the intended message is distorted before it gets to the target.

We need to be more constructive. I watched people calling GEJ all manners of names and I'm watching it happen again with PMB. But what has that done for us?

God bless your beautiful soul. I have my disagreements too with position sometimes but I believe he/ she is entitled to his/ her opinion like everyone of us and that freedom to express divergent views is the bedrock of democracy and it has to be upheld.

That said, a lot of people trolling him have crossed the boundaries a number of times. I have read posts where people threatened his life right here. To those people, let me caution them, that the internet does not provide anonymity as such and our laws frown strongly on threats to life and threats to cause bodily harm.

We should learn to be civil, even when we disagree.

Anyways, I currently hold a Master's degree and I also recently gained admission into a PhD program in a UK university but with no funding from the school and the estimated total cost of the tuition and living expenses amount to about #16 million for the 3 years.

So, I decided to come seek the opinion of folks here with better experience if it really worth spending this amount in the long run or should I rather invest this amount?

In the present circumstances, #16 million might not be enough to see you through your 3 years PhD with tution, living expenses and other incidental costs.

In the alternative, I will suggest you beam your search light for PhDs in the U.S. You will find a lot of them fully funded.

With a well crafted Statement of purpose you will most likely get an admission in the States.

The emphasized part of your post refers (emphasis mine). I disagree with this submission strongly. While the government shares part of the blame, citizens and opinion moulders cannot be excused of their insensitivity at a time like this.

When Corona virus hits the streets (God forbid) the people who will be free are those who have maintained social distancing, stayed at home and observed hygienic practices and not those who would be blaming government.

Let us learn to do our part by living responsibly. There is God and government. Do you blame God for allowing the virus to exist at all? Government has not lived up to expectations and that happened almost all over the world because a lot was not known about the virus and it's deadliness (remember that is why they call it novel).

The people in Government who failed to do the needful are paying the prices by being afflicted by Corona.

By the same token, individuals who failed to observe the guidelines by health authorities would have themselves to blame ultimately.

If the government fails us, do not let us fail ourselves.

All religious leaders and opinion moulders should not abuse the right to associate freely by putting the lives of others at risk. There is no right that is absolute.

I believe the cases are under-reported as you pointed out.

Sadly, Lagos has the highest number of reported cases but I will not be surprised if some other states actually have more incidences than Lagos State.

Of all the states, Lagos State is the only one (and this is purely based on my observation, I might be wrong) that has shown aggression in tackling this issue and even Lagos State needs to do more.

My initial thought was to say amen to your prayer because of the stupidity of our leaders but when I thought it through it occurred to me that such a prayer could be harmful to the masses. You wonder how? Here you go:

1. If the political leaders catch the virus, they have the capacity to marshall medical personnel to their homes. 1 of them can marshall as many as 50, if he or she so desires.

That means less number of medical personnel and materials will be available to the masses.

2. If the political leaders catch the virus in their numbers, they will use the state resources to treat themselves unlike the masses.

Let us just pray and hope that the virus abates as a result of our immunity. This is no time to pray for the virus to attack anybody.

Who enforces such a standard?

Immigration laws are set by individual countries and not by a world body.

Countries even render their citizen stateless for political reasons and it will be trivial to ban
citizens to protect the majority.

Any country that has instituted travel ban have automatically banned its citizens from the
target countries.

Japan recently did not allow the Covid 19 infested cruise ship to land despite having some citizens aboard
until the coast was clear.

I believe that international protocols forbid countries from shutting down borders against their citizens.

I am yet to see a country that has shut her borders against her citizens.

I shared the same sentiments before I considered that closing the border couldn't have solved the problem totally as the borders couldn't be shut against our citizens.

Now that the borders are shut, Nigerians in diaspora should just be less selfish and stay wherever they are at the moment until the situation normalizes.

And then, the unfounded talks about Corona not being able to survive in Nigerian weather encouraged a lot of Nigerians abroad, who felt threatened by Corona, to come back to Nigeria so as to enjoy the purported "immunity" that our weather confers on us.
