Education / Re: I Beg To Differ: Is Debating A Dead Culture In Nigerian Schools? by tolajay: 12:47pm On Mar 24, 2022
Interesting to read of your experience and interest in resuscitating the debating culture.

Depending on the amount of resources you're willing to commit to the cause, you reach out to a local school in your community or bigger level like radio stations.

I presume there are NGOs who are involved in organising public speaking and debating in schools as well.

Well done!

DoctorOlasDesk:
I wonder too o. The days of junior debate. I plan to resurrect it with prizes the exact same way it was when we were kids. Debating is just one, however JETS? I'm shocked that JETS has practically died in Nigeria.

Thanks to debating culture I learnt earlier in life. Till today, everyone would say about me, make una no let am open mouth. The moment i'm allowed to speak, it is finished. I knock out everything with words completely. God bless our early days
Family / Is The Debating Culture Dead In Nigerian Schools? by tolajay: 12:41pm On Mar 24, 2022
Growing up, participating and attending debates were a norm, right from the primary school.

I recall the day I blanked out at the Local Government Secretariat with the LG Chairman in attendance. I goofed big time, but I'm better off today. grin grin (You sef share your experiences below).

From the nomination process to the preparation, preliminary rounds, local governments rounds and state levels, school debates were always moments to expect and explore.

However, over the past 20 years, I haven't noticed much of such socio-academic activity. I had concluded that the debate culture in primary and secondary schools (perhaps nationally) had died in the country.

But guess what! This month - March 2022 - has been intriguing with a good line-up of student debates. Thanks to Nigeria Info Lagos, Paystack, Printivo, RLG, Obywezy and other partners I can't remember. shocked NB: This is NOT a promotional piece. I don't know any of the organisers nor partners. But I think it's noteworthy to mention them, cos without their support the show would not be aired.

I have been wowed by the display of intellectual sagacity and eloquence by a crop of Secondary School students in Lagos who have been participating in the 'I Beg To Differ' debate challenge on Nigerian Info, Lagos.

Some have been exceptionally starling, while others tried to get along. In all, I am wowed by their foundation and what they can individually achieve in life given their mental state.

Do you think the culture of debate is dying or already dead in Nigeria?

What can be done to resuscitate this important culture for social development?

"There are no right or wrong decisions"? While you're trying to console, pacify or motivate, you need not make this statement.

YES! There are wrong decisions. People make those decisions, and live the consequences. All the realities you see around you today (good or bad) are a product of people's decisions - right or wrong.

The OP has rightfully analysed his situation to know he missed that opportunity. That is the first path to correcting the wrong decision if presented with such opportunity again.

For your friend who's regretting relocating to Canada, you can simply ask if he had all the legit documents, right character, skill and frame of mind. His would be 1-in-100 cases unlike Nigeria.

The probability of succeeding in a developed country is way higher than what's obtainable in Nigeria: no basic social amenities, infrastructure, systems, laws and policies. And you're comparing Canada to Nigeria. Yes, Canada and other developed countries aren't the best we can have, but they are better than Nigeria.

Blablamalala:

There are no right or wrong decisions. You never can tell if being in Australia would have been fulfilling.

I have this childhood friend who courtesy of being born in Canada earned him and his siblings Canadian Citizenship. He and his sister left Nigeria for Canada after secondary school. I and my brother so much envied them, wishing we could as well leave Nigeria for greener pastures. But guess what? Today we both are doing far, far better than my childhood friend. I and my brother got our Jobs after university at the inception of the hot cake Information Technology in Nigeria..MTN, ECONET, GLO.......... From one Telecommunication firm to another we are climbing the ladder upwards, with privileges of travelling many countries around the world and still traveling on official bases. All started in Nigeria.

My Canadian friend regrets ever leaving Nigeria for Canada he really has nothing to show as an achievement. May Good Luck come your way.

Let's not mix up the issues: Outsourcing isn't plagiarism.

May I ask you;

Are all outsourced work plagiarised?

Are all plagiarised work outsourced?

Is it possible to outsource and be fully prepared to defend same?

I have no support fibre for plagiarism but outsourcing a project/assignment for whatever reason isn't out place, in as much as you can follow through on the process, review and defend your outcome.

claremont:

It's blatant cheating. I know of people who were caught and expelled by their uni for this and a report sent to UKBA to get their visa curtailed.

Let's assume you outsource an MSc/PhD dissertation. MSc/PhD dissertations have as part of their assessment an oral defence, and there is a reason for this. Students who have ''outsourced'' their work stick out like a sore thumb as they wouldn't know what they are talking about in an oral defence. Plus, I don't know how people who graduate via ''outsourcing'' can defend that degree in any work environment.

First, revert to the primary conversation to understand the context of my comment.

Secondly, read through the line and realise that I simply use outsourcing as a example.

If monitoring and evaluation isn't necessary, even the school/lecturer wouldn't have detected the plagiarism.

Yes, plagiarism is wrong but to play the devil's advocate: do you think everyone who graduated from school did their assignments and projects themselves - both in the developed and developing countries?

We can establish the morality or otherwise of outsoucing assignment, but has and would it change anything?

There's nothing wrong with outsourcing.

It's more like delegation, however, one must supervise/review the process/outcome.

Your brother's friend is super lazy.

The least he could have done was to check for plagiarism and errors.

One of my brother’s friends outsourced his dissertation and now he’s been accused of plagiarism and will have to retake his dissertation. That’s extension and extra tuition fee.
Just try your best at it, you’re better off with low grade than an extension.

So untrue...UK has only suspended priority visas.

This is another spotlight on quack journalism in Nigeria.

The reporter and editor are bereft of comprehension.

The official press release headline clearly used the word "priority", but reporter chose to aggravate public tension by implying the suspension of the whole visa scheme.

One really has to be careful of the information one consumes.

Journalism in Nigeria has gone to the dogs.

Do you have the mobile app of your bank on your phone and can you access it?

If yes, then you're clicks away from exchanging your Naira to Pounds.

Contact Omopapa or Lexusgs430. They are tested and trusted with exchanges.

You'll send the Naira to their Naira account and they'll credit your UK Account with the equivalent pounds, after you two must have agreed on a price.

If you need further assistance on living in the UK as a Nigerian, then follow this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/6719932/living-uk-life-immigrant-part-2/297

Travel / Re: The Adventures Of A New UK Migrant by tolajay: 11:07pm On Mar 02, 2022
You're a lovely story teller.

I hope you're doing well anywhere you are right.

We never see your break light in years.

LMay:
23kg max not 25kg if Turkish Airlines. That is, 23kg each in two places. That's for your main luggage.

8kg max for your cabin luggage.

Total of 54kg!

UKMigrant has touched on food items to bring on. Let me help with luggage packing tips, you might need them.

Tips

You're not allowed to put food or sharp objects (cutlery, blade, pocket knife etc) in your cabin luggage or carry on (hand bag/laptop bag), so pack smartly.

Tightly pack all your clothes, shoes, books, or weaves (if female) into your cabin luggage. Instead of folding clothes passively or mindlessly like we do when arranging our closet, roll each tightly into a bunch. This will squeeze out air & give you more space in the box to squeeze more clothes into. You can watch YouTube videos to learn this technique.

Now you're left with food items, sharp objects, and any cream/perfume exceeding 50ml (Only liquid of less than 50ml per bottle is allowed in the cabin luggage). Now arrange all these carefully into your main luggage.

For food items, put into ziploc bags or transparent polythene bag like pure water bags. Put different food items into each and label appropriately...e.g Melon, Ogbono, Ugwu vegetable etc.

For ladies carrying weaves, discard the packs to make your luggage relatively lighter.

Palm oil is not allowed. Don't even bother!

You don't necessarily need an industrial scale to weigh your luggage. Buy a regular domestic scale. You know the ones "Check your weight" guys carry around? Yes, that one. It's less than 2k.

To weigh, first stand on it and check your weight. Write it down or memorise it. Now put your luggage on your head and check your combined weight. Subtracting your own weight from the combined weight will give you the weight of your luggage.

Your allowance per main luggage is 23kg but aim for 21kg or max 22kg at home. Why? The scale at Murtala Mohammed Int'l Airport is forward by about 2kg. You don't want to stress yourself with reshuffling at the airport or trashing stuffs you bought with your hard-earned money. Pack smartly from home!

Airport staffs are not smiling again. Before they allow you pass/check-in a 23.9kg bag, you'll beg tire. Anything above that, they'll tell you to go obtain a ticket of $150 per overweight bag upstairs! You don't need that wahala in your life.

What else?

Remember I asked you to stuff all your clothes & books plus shoes into your cabin luggage? Trust me, it would have exceeded 8kg by now. You know the box itself will add to the weight as well.

Let me give you orijo. grin

1. Your laptop bag is not weighed. That's an extra space to put clothes, books, laptop (of course), charger etc.

2. Your hand bag isn't weighed either. If you're a lady, that's a plus. You can carry a laptop bag + your handbag alongside the cabin bag.

3. If you're eleru town council like me & you've utilised all available spaces yet you're still not within allocated kg limits, fear not. There's still a way.

Leave your original cabin luggage with somebody (eg family/friend who followed you to the airport). Let them act like they own the bag while they simply stand by it.

Check in your laptop bag as your Cabin Luggage. They'll tag it and return it to you while the two main bags are passed to cargo. Now remove the tag and stickers on your laptop bag and place it on your original Cabin Luggage you kept with your escort. You're done!

With these tips, you'll have a smooth sail luggage wise.

Extras....

Depending on how light or fancy you want to travel, those silly Echolac boxes are not your friend. 1) They'll add to the overall weight 2) They're not durable. Most would be damaged (broken handles, broken wheels, torn surface areas, etc) before you arrive your destination. How would you even lift a damaged box? You'll place it on your head maybe grin

Invest in a quality box. Might be pricey but it will last for years and save you from embarrassing situations. I don't know if/where those are sold in Nigeria. I bought mine in the abroad. This is my 5th year of usage and I travel very frequently. It's still intact.

If you're low on cash, buy those very strong bagco ghana must go bags as main luggage. Not the usual ones. This one is a bit recent & it comes in one color - grey! More like a grainy white mixed with black. It costs about N1,500 per bag. Nothing to be ashamed of. You wont even see it until your final destination after you check it in at MMIA, so you can still form posh in transit with your cabin luggage. Regular travellers use it a lot. It's very light and durable. For your information, they sell it in the abroad too. So what? In fact, its a life saver for people whose boxes get damaged at the airport. Just that they'll pay a few extra thousands more to procure it at the airport.

No use am as cabin baggage oooo. You'll look like Osuofia in London. Hehehe. Joking. Use a correct small sized box as cabin/hand luggage.

Third option is to source for lightweight boxes (rare) or lightweight travelling bags with wheels (looks like a piece of cloth with wheels attached when empty. The box-shaped compact ones are heavy).

Wishing you a safe flight!

It's 2022, what's your current weight and how are your packs? grin

pappilo:
Hi yall

I want to keep this as my diary of my 2nd weight loss program. I kept a log on here back in early 2014 but the data loss wiped all the records.

In March 2014, when my waist 36 trousers started becoming tight, I knew something had to be done. When I came to England I used waist 30 trousers and just over a decade on, I was seriously getting out of shape.

I jumped on the scale and I was almost 90kg. I am only 5'6 tall so you may have an idea of what I looked like; big breast, yansh and correct stomach! I am a man for Christ sake! I took off all my clothes and jumped back on the scale and it read 85kg...ha! temprorary relief.

I did a one week master cleanse and my weight dropped to 79.5kg. then over the next 3 months I exercised, running up to 4 miles daily and also cut out the carbohydrates. I went down to 73.5kg and I had to change my wardrobe. Then summer 2014 came and I let myself go again. Now I am back to 81kg

The plan is to have a six pack by November 30 2015. can I do it? follow my thread to find out.

Lmao, I honestly laugh at and pity you. We are definitely not on the same pedestal because you are a hungry student without savings, no career plan who just arrived in the UK. When I said class I didn’t mean social class, I meant literally class room because I saw you all over the internet looking for advice on whether to enroll for a masters in Business analytics or Data Analytics at Bournemouth. Trying to figure out the value of SCRUM certification and some Ppl on this platform were able to help your confused self. I am already in the UK for info and unlike you I am not struggling to pay my bills. My fees are paid in full. Yes people get stranded for not doing their due dilligence, it’s usually ppl like you by the way. My issue is where you sit down and start writing rubbish about students with families saying they should not bring their kids on a study visa blah blah, and then when I search your post I just realized you arrive UK in January and you are also a struggling student. Keep your in-depth useless advice for newbies like yourself. If you truly want to help ppl pay instablog and warn ppl before they start the study visa path, not when you can se they have already invested and made a choice on this path, then rather than offering valuable or helpful advice, you start bashing their choices when you know at this point there’s no turning back for them. Also go home yourself, seeing as according to you it’s not a viable relocation route. You can’t come here typing rubbish to people when you don’t know their backgrounds or their net worth etc based off of a few internet posts. Do you know how much it costs to process visa for a family of 4? To pay for their accommodation? Because you used arranged POF and paid 30% of your fees you think you are a hotshot. I’m sure you lived in a shared accommodation where if you turn your body will touch both walls. You are here widing your mouth like a funnel. Idiot

Your points are valid and a corroboration of my position; For every Nigerian, exploration is essential to survival, right now.

My worry is simply about those who really don't calculate the full cost of such migration but hop in with scanty or no information/funds.

It's unreasonable to start what one can't finish, or even finish and then realise its uselessness. You can follow the trail of my response to be sure of how this conversation has evolved.

My position: some Nigerians are better off in Nigeria or any other country than travelling to the UK for Studies, only to realise they've wasted time and resources.

I see a couple of fund-raising mission for Nigerians to go study courses like Business Admin/International Relations...in the UK, and I laugh about the market viability of such courses. However, some of them think going out for studies is the way to leave and never return but it's not as simple as that. Many are acting out of fear, desperation and ignorance.

Check data: what's the retainership level of Africans students in the UK? How many of them eventually get sponspored, ILR and all?

Yes, optimism is good. But optimism without realistic projection is sheer self-deceit.

Best wishes!

Second law: Force=ma ( mass X acceleration).
The third laws: An object will continue to be in a state of constant velocity except an external force is acted on it .
Real Life: People are making various moves because they want to change thier state of things or secure the future of thier children, it doesn't matter how much force ( money) they are investing. We all move at different velocities depending on our pocket sizes, that's why some ask for cheaper tuition fees schools. Some have larger forces and some have smaller but at the end of it all, the final Destination is what matters.
Nigerians are tired of thier inertia or staying in one sport, the government to some are not helping matters, so allow them to move, no matter the amount of forces as explained by Newton's Laws, at least they are moving and the final good destinations are assured if we faint not.

I am unsure what your grouse is, but you've evidently become too emotional about a logical issue.

First, my comment wasn't an attack on anyone but a sympathetic analysis of some Nigerians' plight who think luck and insha is all they'll need to function in a structured society like the UK.

Let me ask you, have you seen or heard many Nigerian students stranded abroad because they didn't do their due diligence before leaving but were simply optimistic that anyhow anyhow dem go survive? Well, I see and hear it everyday. Shy away from it for all you want, it doesn't change the obvious truth. There are consequences for every action and inaction.

Another angle: do you know the number of UK-schooled Nigerians who returned home with/to almost nothing? Well, I know, see and hear this a lot. Most of them would have been better off if they stayed and invested those money in themselves back home...Sad truth!

Just last week, a Nigerian student was all over the internet seeking accommodation. Someone had to warn him because he was flaunting a major immigration declaration on accommodation.

Also, did you hear of Nigerian who couldn't his tuition after nine months, and the school asked him to withdraw and reported to the home office? May I ask what assistance you've given to these ones?

See, you may not like facing the truth, it still doesn't change the truth.

Your sense of entitlement and worldview is grossly abashed by the Nigerian society. You need to reshape.

Lastly, how did you conclude that we are on the same pedestal because of a couple of post on a faceless forum? Gullibility is no excuse for underachievement. You really need to expand your mental scope.

I wish you the best...Tap me when you're in the UK.

You would think you’ve been in the UK for years. Funny we are probably in the same class. I just went thru some of your posts and I must say, if you want to help ppl, help them. If they’ve already sunk millions into their visa application and at the point of leaving you come with this your warning with no feasible suggestion as to an alternative, what good is it to them except that it helps you feel better about yourself? Higher education is really expensive in developed countries. Most natives don't even attend because of their inability to pay the high fees.

I'm in constant awe of how much Nigerians spend to school in the UK. Yet, many say they're poor.

Unfortunately, many of our people running there do not have the resources to comfortably pull through. No clear plans for their future but simply want to travel. Sadly, schooling isn't the best pathway to relocating to a country like UK.

The most disturbing one are those who move their entire family to the UK for their 18 months course, howbeit, they do not have the resouces to take care of them.

Na God go help us for Naija ooo.

Can't risk damaging my car and other gadgets cos of negligence and corruption.

Ehailing and okada will suffice for now.

1. Yes, your spouse can apply for dependent visa.

2. You need to be ready/committed to honouring the terms of the scholarship/contract. Be prepared to return at the completion of your course as agreed.

There are a couple of ways to go around it, though;

1. Let your spouse get a Tier 2-sponsored job while in the UK. Then he changes from Tier 4 dependent visa to Tier 2 holder, then you can apply as his/her Tier-2 dependent upon the completion of your course.

2. You can return home then apply for Tier 2-sponsored jobs from here...Since you're pretty sure you'll get a job with your certification.

Best.

TheLasyBuddha:
Hello,

I may be going to the UK for a one-year MSc programme; fully-funded and with living stipends. Can my spouse apply as a dependent under me?

Also, the scholarship wants awardees to return back to their home countries. There is a very huge chance of me getting a job and a Tier 2 due to my degree, which is on the shortage list, is there any implication for not returning or switching to a Tier 2 Visa?
