badaru1,
i will get in touch in a few hours.

olason/gangsta/georged,
hi-low-tv is experiencing the law of karma.they got the right to the epl through fraud at the bidding process.i learnt a former super eagles player who works for s*y sports is a friend to them.he leaked the asking price of multichoice to his friend so that he could put in a higher bid.that was how they outwitted dstv!they dont have the business acumen to manage pay tv like multichoice.i see them collapsing in a few years.it is just the beginning of their fall.they might have to merge with multichoice or mytv.
a lot of the stations they sell to us in Africa are on freeview in the uk-Sky News,SkySports News,CNN,BBC,SKY3,etc.

Suspension Of Broadcast Licence: How CTL’sTrouble Started

The recent suspension of the broadcasting licence of Communications Trends Limited (CTL) by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on allegation of piracy was not unexpected. It was an action the regulatory body procrastinated on for too long.

Owned by Mr. Uzo udenmba, CTL is one of the early pay TV platforms in Nigeria and about the second after FSTV to be owned by a Nigerian. It first started operations in Lagos with corporate office in Etiebet’s Place on Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja before relocating to Port Harcourt and became very popular in the restive South South region.

The suspension which was made public on February 18 but which took effect from February 8  is sequel to a series of petitions alleging that the pay TV has been pirating programmes of other platforms especially, HiTV;  an issue which has landed both parties, CTL and HiTV, in the court.

The whole accusation and counter accusation of right infringement  started shortly after HiTV  launched out into Nigeria’s pay TV market with the good news that it has acquired the very popular English Premiership League (EPL ) that was hitherto the exclusive reserve of Multichoice Nigeria, a South African owned station.

Under the aegis of Association of Cable Owners of Nigeria (ACON), HiTV was accused of practicising monopoly by not allowing them to rebroadcast live EPL matches and its other premium sports content such as Carling Cup as well as the big one, UEFA Champions League.  ACON went a step further by instituting a suit against HiTV accusing the less than three years old pay TV station of engaging in monopolistic practice. An allegation which HiTV denied by saying that when it  secured EPL  right, it did offered  members of ACON the opportunity to be part of the deal by asking them to pay N3,500 subscription fee per subscriber. But rather than jump at the offer, they insisted that they cannot pay more than N300 per subscriber for a right HiTV committed billions of naira into.

“Even when HiTV brought the fee down to N2,500 per subscriber and with the condition that each station must be able to pay for 5,000 subscribers, they still held on to their N300 or no deal position,” a source close to both ACON and HiTV and who was knowledgeable about the negotiation said.

But in what looked like the proverbial strike the shepherd and the sheep will scamper,  HiTV sued CTL, the main force behind ACON, accusing it of pirating its premium sporting contents; an allegation which CTL denied in strong terms and which led the court to order both parties to maintain status quo ante belum which HiTV thought was a relieve because it had lost close to N 5 billion as a result of the alleged piracy.

However, rather than abide by the status quo belum directive of the court, CTL still indulged in the unauthorised rebroadcast of HiTV sporting programmes  which led to the antipiracy raids simultaneously executed  on January 27 on CTL outlets in six states of the federation namely Lagos, Delta, Imo, Edo, Enugu and Rivers states by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

According to a release issued by NCC’s  Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Vincent Oyeweso,   “HITV had  in October last year petitioned the Commission, alleging unauthorised broadcast of its EPL and UEFA matche contents protected by copyright which infringement actions by some cable operators, including CTL, amounted to piracy. The Commission’s consequent investigation confirmed the allegation of broadcast piracy in a number of cities across the country.

“At the NCC Headquarters in Abuja in December last year, the CEO of CTL, Mr Uzo Udemba denied allegations of his company’s involvement in the unauthorised broadcast of HITV’s EPL and UEFA matches. He was warned to desist from further illegal broadcast of copyright-protected contents of other broadcasting companies, especially those of HITV in issue.

“The NCC again in January this year received another complaint from HITV accusing CTL of continual piracy bordering on live broadcasts of its sports contents of EPL and UEFA matches in its (CTL’s) operational cities. This triggered a fresh round of investigations which revealed persistent piracy of HITV’s broadcast rights by CTL. NCC’s surveillance revealed that CTL has at least an administrative office in each of its operational cities, where some decoders and smart cards were positioned. These were, however, aptly interpreted as dummies or decoys calculated to distract the Commission’s operatives who on further investigation, unearthed other premises which served as CTL’s transmitting centres where illegal broadcasts were being perpetuated, in most instances several kilometres away from its administrative offices.

“Consequently on the morning of January 27, 2010, copyright inspectors launched a massive enforcement intervention on CTL facilities in the six states of Lagos, Delta, Imo, Edo, Enugu and Rivers where the acts of copyright infringement were allegedly being committed with impunity. Seizures and arrests were made during the raid.

“It is instructive that in spite of the simultaneous enforcement actions against CTL, the company in a brazen demonstration of defiance of the Law, again indulged in illegal live broadcasts of EPL matches in Owerri, Port Harcourt and Lagos on the very night of the operation, indicating that the CTL premises earlier raided were not the main transmitting centres in the three affected cities. This has prompted a continuation of enforcement operation against CTL in those three cities,”  the released dated February 17 said.

During the raid, copyright Inspectors impounded equipment and documents adjudged to be devoted to the commission of the crime at the seven CTL business outfits (two of which are based at its Lagos operational headquarters) and arrested their station managers along with some support staff of the company.

Among those arrested on that day were Mr. Ezeabasim Chisom in charge of CTL office on Sakponba Road, Benin City; Mr. Chibuzor Onyenuforo who mans CTL House at 206/208, Aba Express Way in Port Harcourt; Mr. Samuel Chigbu of CTL office at No. 30, Wetheral Road, Owerri; Mrs. Chris Owaegbu of CTL office at No. 1, Enerren Junction, Warri in Delta State and Mr. Azubuike Echeonwu of CTL office at No. 50, Zik Avenue, Uwani, Enugu.

Interestingly, HiTV is not alone in this allegation of piracy against CTL. Last September, Orbit Showtime, the largest pay TV platform in the Middle East and North Africa petitioned the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akuyili, alleging that CTL has been pirating its content.

The petition dated September 21, 2009 and entitled “The Illegal Use of Showtime Decoders and Smartcards for Piracy of the Barclays English Premier League Matches in Nigeria” was signed  by Orbit Showtime’s director of legal.

In the petition Orbit had complained bitterly saying “Orbit Showtime is the largest PayTV platform in the Middle East and North Africa and is the exclusive licensee in that region for the Barclays Premier League (‘Premier League’) for the 2009/2010 season. We understand that a number of cable operators (as specified below) and distributors located in various parts of Nigeria have obtained our smartcards to use for the unauthorised broadcast of the Premier League matches in Nigeria – a territory that Orbit Showtime is not licensed to operate in and has no rights to broadcast Premier League matches.”

Orbit specifically manipulated CTL and other cable companies like Metrodigital Cable Television,  Delta Tele-Kommunications Limited, Hashtronics Nigeria Limited, Modern Communications Limited, Multimesh Communications Limited and passionately appealed to the minister to  immediately investigate such unauthorised retransmission or access of Orbit Showtime’s Premier League matches with a view to ceasing any such activities in Nigeria.

The same last year, the organisers of the EPL had also written to the minister of information, through  Phil Lines, director of Media Operations and International Broadcasting, complaining about the alleged infringement on their rights by some cable outfits.

And until the decisive action of NBC on CTL, piracy has been the major scourge of pay TV business in this part of the world. With HiTV having the premium sports and entertainment content, investigations revealed that it has becom an easy target.

Amos-5i satellite starts operations over Africa
January 28th, 2010 - 14:16 UTC by Andy Sennitt.

Spacecom, the Amos satellite fleet operator, today announced that the Amos-5i satellite has reached its 17 degrees East orbital position and has begun commercial service. With clients from Africa, Europe and the Middle East already on board, the Amos-5i satellite enables Spacecom to start serving the growing African market with C-band and Ku-band capacity. Amos-5i is an interim satellite that will be seamlessly succeeded in its orbital position by Amos-5 once it commences operations, scheduled for mid-2011.

The Amos-5i satellite’s 20 36MHz and 4 72MHz C-band transponders plus 9 54MHz Ku-band transponders, make it a powerful platform offering a pan-African C-band beam connecting Europe and the Middle East alongside two Ku-band regional beams. The Amos-5 satellite will further expand Spacecom’s footprint in Africa thanks to its 14 72MHz and 4 36MHz C-band transponders and 18 72MHz Ku-band transponders.

The Amos 5i satellite was formerly Asia Satellite Telecommunication’s AsiaSat-2 satellite.

all,
regards to the house.I miss everybody.I am planning to launch fully into the fta world in the UK next year.I have talked to an installer who is into Digitv in Bolton.he promised to teach me the fta tricks here when I meet him.

Enigma,
pls get in touch.I sent you a mail but you didnt reply.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by toxnaija: 2:31am On Nov 17, 2009
Pitodenz,
congrats on surviving the accident.God will continue to guard and guide us all.

all,
I would like to tell the house that AIT has towed the line of NTA.it is now online via www.watchait.com
I was in Manchester for the fta trip as promised.I discovered that the installer used two 60cm dishes for thor(digi tv) and astra, combining the signals through a disceq switch.what i never liked was the sub-standard receiver he got for my friend.it is called he@d satellite receiver.it does not have blindscan and some essential fta features.how i wish the signal reached Africa.I saw over 100 stations on digi tv alone.astra has so many stations too including ait and nta.i watched the under-17 final on nta through astra.my question to my colleagues here especially Enigma is which receiver is the best for fta in Europe?can i get strong receivers in the UK?
please check this link for the list of stations on digitv-      www.lyngsat.com/packages/digi.html
Does anyone have Enigma's contact details?if yes, please send them to me through the forum pls.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by toxnaija: 5:48pm On Nov 14, 2009
all,
Congratulations Nigeria!I hope we dont forget to fire Amodu and the NFF,and begin to replace the dead woods in the Eagles.I watched the two matches from Nairobi and Maputo through live internet streaming.the signals from the two venues were very clear.NTA disappointed me so I had to follow the match through live text for 85minutes until I got the live tv links from fifafoot.net.I missed the goals but saw the last 10 minutes and highlights.

I will be in my friend's house in Manchester tomorrow for the fta trip.I discovered that it was Digi tv that they watch here. The over 100 stations are superb with everything you need-sports,documentaries,porn,movies,all European league matches, news, cartoons, etc. It uses Nagravision2 and 3.The codes are imputted manually just like we used to do for ART and Showtime before Echolink came.I also heard Astra is included for NTA,AIT,BBC,and other British freeview stations from Sky.I will give a feedback after my trip.It cost my friend £150 to do everything.I believe fta enthusiasts will do it for half that price.I will give you all the details of my findings.Unfortunately,I dont think the signals can reach Africa.

Enigma,
pls get in touch.I need your advice and contribution.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by toxnaija: 8:56am On Nov 10, 2009
F-Marshall,
yes ooo.I am in UK now missing fta.I just got information from my friend in Manchester that there is a Ghanaian there who helps to instal fta in the UK.My friend watches all premiership and other European matches free on Astra and Thor.I will be in his place in a couple of weeks to get the details.I hope to hear from Enigma on this.

Jayron,
where is your location? My family had the same experience a few months ago in Abeokuta.Pls be careful especially with Xmas fast approaching.

Olason,
Did you watch premiership on e feeds this weekend?I am sure you didnt.I experienced it while in naija.they are very inconsistent.there was one Sunday they showed the opening formalities of a Chelsea match, and all of a sudden they went blank!I had already called so many people to watch!what is brewing in baba's house again?pls ja mi si oooo!pls mail me for the details.I am tired of all these cards and decoders going off everytime.I will let u know the details of the UK fta when I visit my friend in Manchester.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by toxnaija: 7:15pm On Nov 07, 2009
all,
please dont disregard bodejohn's info on supermaster antenna.are we not supposed to be learning new tricks in fta everytime?so why are some of us discouraging him.there is no harm in acquiring more knowledge even if it becomes useless later.it is all part of fun.it is more exciting than all those annoying questions people keep asking on this forum.my question is can it work nationwide or what is its range?

Isomad,
oga tilewa,i felt very bad with what you did to me a few days to my departure.i kept calling you and you refused to pick my call.i just couldnt believe you could do that to me.anyway, how is my hometown?

badaru1,
oga mi sir!how family and work?i dey miss you here ooo.na only internet streaming i dey use watch tv and listen to naija radio.is there any receiver that can do the work of predator especially on hotbird?i need one here.pls get in touch.i will call you later.

dejsam/george,
i am sure those dishes belong to NTA or NITEL?they make use of massive dishes.

enitan,
saw you in copashon uniform.why are you serving in lagos?you go settle them for abuja?they for send you to benue, delta or cross river!i am sure you know why i recommended those states.i hope you will enjoy lagos for service.i never enjoyed it when i served some years back in lagos.best wishes.

olofofo,
happy birthday.i hope the meat still remain.keep my own till i come back oooo.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by toxnaija: 6:31pm On Nov 02, 2009
olason,
pls dont rejoice too much over the etv feeds.dont be surprised that they could decide not to join supersports for any match next weekend.I wish I still dey naija dey fish for fta.one week to my departure,i got some new stations on telstar including kidsco.i informed the house.but would you believe that two days to my flight,my strong receiver lost all the channels on its memory?I had to start all over again, even some hours to my flight I was still in Abeokuta imputting as many frequencies as possible for my family.this never happened in about 6years of fta.I believe my receivers and dishes were protesting over my long departure!

olofofo,
what is that receiver used for?it is very expensive at that price.even,a banker in the UK will think thrice before buying it!

badaru1 and Adewest,
where are the baba agbas, the baba mutum? Is predator server back?It was God that saved me here over the receiver.I had already convinced a friend of mine who was complaining about the high price of Sky Sports on Virgin Media Satellite to get Predator. She had already given me her debit card to purchase it online. It was God and my naija sense that told me to check the users'forum, and alas everybody was complaining that the server was down.I dont know of its present status.

all,
I want to say thank you to you.i am missing everybody especially those members who were here when fta was really exciting and adventurous-Vickoy,folo,enitan,gofitec,mide,onyengbu,dejsam,microgiant,pitodenz,george,butoneday,f-marshall,enigma,jujukemist,the guy in KD LATER mAIDUGURI,twinstaiye, joe, etc.
I remember the days of cable tv,w3a,sirius,nilesat,echolink,fuji,quarrels with oba ashewo enitan,90cm,2.4m,3m,even 6m dishes.sincerely, this forum deserves an award. Here in the UK,I manage to watch all the matches online.NTA is also available 24/7 but they disappoint at times.even yesterday,i managed to watch caf champions league on lc2 international online.nta was dead then.i watch nta news, super eagles and other fifa tourneys on nta.I miss you all.I am waiting for a stable receiver here.Is echolink still off?
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by toxnaija: 3:18am On Oct 30, 2009
microgiant,
I am sorry that i wont be of help.I am not leaving for Nigeria as my research will take over 3years here.I will tell you if I can get someone going home for Xmas but I doubt it.

badaru/george,
have you got any news on Predator?
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by toxnaija: 5:07pm On Oct 25, 2009

Regards to everybody from a cold East Midlands of the UK.It is nice to be with you on season 4.thanks for the link to nta online.it was easy to pick nta international there. It is very clear and smooth here.walahi,it was clearer than watching it on terrestial tv in my naija home.I hope they show Eagles matches.I read on the site that they started on October 1 2009.I hope they stay long there.i urgently need AIT's link online for the super eagles matches.anybody with an idea on that?
It seems the thread is not getting as hot as it was some months back.what is really happening?no echolink.no gamma,no coco discussions again.I miss those moments.
I have attached my pix which had me and my housemates.I am the only African amongst 27 people from all over the world.I am doing well in selling Nigeria/Africa to them.they all want to visit the continent.

all,
I am really sorry for the silence.I was very busy with my relocation and registration here in Leicester,UK.Besides,I found out that the thread was being invaded by users who keep asking the same answered questions, really sucking queries, e.g.how do I unlock etv, send me frequencies, what dish do I buy,can i see nilesat with 90cm in Lagos, etc.
anyway,I observed that here in the UK,virtually everybody uses 60-90cm dishes.I saw an advert for a 1.8m dish to pick Showtime here but the location matters.I am missing my stations dearly.I watch tv online here as the internet is very fast and available 24 hours both in my room and office/class.I also listen to COOLFM,RADIO LAGOS/EKO FM but TVContinental is not coming up.No chance for fta now.
Please send me the online links of other Nigerian stations.I want to catch up with home.
Can I get more free online tv links?I hook up with justin.com.

mide2008,
I saw your flash last Friday.my plane was just touching down at Heathrow when the call came in.the zain line is on roaming with the Orange network. You can text me through it.you can also call but it is expensive for me cos they will charge me for receiving the call.how far with the white card?Pitodenz seems to be experiencing the same problem.

Olason,
thanks.the intel907 feed had been there for over 5years.It is owned by RTP,Portugal, and used for the Portuguese football league, basketball and formula one.It is called RTP Net.I couldnt get back immediately to give you the info cos of my preparartions.

all,
thanks for the various messages.I really appreciate your concern.
I think the best bet for now is to get a Daarsat for the HD craze.

all,
I think my take on the Strong HD receiver is that we should all forget about it for now.The price will definitely come down soon.Go and ask for the price of Echolink now which we bought at almost 25k when it came.I heard it is about half that price now!
I am beginning to enjoy the Orbit revolution on Nilesat. My question is Can people in the Southern part pick it because of its ab4a location?remember that ab4a has been giving us problems here.
On Multitv, they have stated it clearly that they are free forever.so,why are people still talking about them going the way of etv.All they want to sell is their digibox/spot adverts and not subscription. Can Ghana members help us find out if their box has the same features like the Strong 4900/4910?How much would it cost to order for it into Nigeria? It is the best alternative for now or if someone can get us European models.

I have a very sad news from my end::::armed robbers were in my Abeokuta,Ogun state residence early this morning 2.30am.they fired gunshots towards my dad and elder brother when they tried to chase them away.they couldnt gain entry, and the police has been notified.no one was hurt but they were traumatised with the nasty experience.the hoodlums were attracted by the huge satellite dishes in the house.Do I have to throw away my dishes all because armed robbers would not let my family live in peace!I was called after the incident at 4am.I wish I was there! It would have been fire for fire!I am really tired of Nigeria- 9 weeks without electricity,3 weeks without tap water, bad roads, bad internet service, expensive foodstuff, weak satellite signals, and now, armed robbers every week.I escaped from them last week in the Lagos traffic!WHY WOULD I WANT TO RETURN HOME TO NAIJA WHEN I LEAVE?

Enitan,
my phones are always on 24/7,even when I am on the news or even chopping barbequed fish.I just wan hear your voice and gist boku oooo.

Olason,
I hail ooo.when are we meeting?

all,
I think it is worth it getting an HD receiver.I went through Joy TV schedule and realised they will be showing these 3 European leagues-French Ligue 1,German Bundesliga, and Spanish La Liga, all for free.Remember that Nigeria has ObafemiMartins and ChineduOgbuke in the Bundesliga.Check the link- http://www.multitvworld.com/sports.htm
WARNING-I would like to warn some 419 guys who have been calling me from Ghana pretending to look for the ways to decode etv and MYtv.Please back off as I am not dumb enough to be conned.I dont want anybody calling me again or giving out my number to strange people. This is the reason I didnt display my phone number.
Any news about Strong HD receiver and the price? Is it cheaper in Europe?

Nolywe,

I hope the SAT3 cable cut didnt affect you too much.70% of internet users in Nigeria including me were cut off with the unfortunate incident last week.
e tv feeds are still available.any news on mpeg4 receivers in Alaba, and what is the price if available?
