kingreign: What were the criteria used in determining the outcome? After everything, I still consider Peugeots engineers as 'Lazy engineers' and their cars I feel are lazily engineered. Na only Nigeria and France and Britain (3 awkward counties) that votes Peugeot as car of the year. In more serious and straight thinking countries, they know a Honda civic and even a hyundai Elantra is a seriously engineered and better car by miles. Small economy cars have shifted from traditional autos to CVT, I guess na now Peugeot dey enter Auto gearbox.
Point of correction that car is not avaliable in western europe
kton: Hello gurus in the house! Pls help in identifying the issue with my ford escape radiator fan. I just discovered that the radiator fan refuse to pick up after sometime that the engine had been working but will pick up immediately the Ac is on and stop working few minute after putting off the Ac. note: thermostat has not been tampered with. Pls,what could be possible cause of this and what could be done to rectify this problem. Thanks.
lets clear things first
your fan should only kick in/ turn on when the temperature has reach a certian point between 82-90 depending with setting but this only happens when all things are in your i.e thermostat and when your fan is not connected direct (common thing with bush mechanic in nigeria)
in general terms when a car is in idle and travelling at very low speeds eg 15mph, the fan kicks in to help to cool the coolant, this happens only when the temperature has reached a certain degrees (between 82-90) and the same time the thermostat open to let out hot coolant and let cold in
so tell how long did you let your car idle to see that the fan is not kicking in
on average when drive for long distance and park without switching the engine you will hear the fan kicking in why ? simple during the course of driving the engine had reached its optinum operating temperature and air hitting your radiator from opposite direction cools your coolant therefor your fan never kicks in if you are driving above 30mph, so when you park and let the engine idle they wont be any air coming to your radiator so two things happen 1 since the car had reached operating temperature, the temperature will raise more and your thermostat open and 2 fan kicks in to cool the coolant
so if you try to test the car without letting reach operating temperature, the fan wont kick in quicking as you would want
so in your case drive for 15mins and stop but dont switch off the car let it idle and wait for the fan to kick in, if it doesnt within 15mins of idling after that 15mins of driving with switching of then there is a problem with fan
mrayosexy: What's d point then.....it dosent make any sense to start with two hands. The point is to start ur car without using any key like the lexus and all....but if u still have to switch d engine on with a key bfor starting...then it's pointless.
thats what makes your car unique from the rest middle class car eg jaquar etc they all sometimes have start button that unique fron your standard toyota
just like car that has heated steering wheel
mnay people would find it cool starting a car by putting key on then press a button to start
by western world understand a catalyst converter is never repaired but replace with a new one or used one which is still able to trap the dangerous gases
your repair is a rip off!!!based on that picture that you showed us saying "ready to be inserted" advantage to you is that no one or any government law that test the emission coming out of the exhaust
whereas here UK a catalyst converter should be able to trap those gases therefore a car is tested by a computer to check if the cat is doing its job
am sure you have heard of the VW scandal of emission the car's software manages to cheat government levels of emission control "your inserts are just rubbish into cat box" though i agree that here and there you would definately help to unblock a blocked cat, which most of the time affect engines rev
so in terms of emission control your insert are just junk into the car but in terms of unblocking yes the car would get its revs back
so in general african countries are still to enforce emission testing on cars, have ever wonder why on average on your rarely see a smoking car in the western world ? its the strictness of the government laws and the enforcing laws dont to allow any car that fails emission test
debsty: Hello all Thanks to those that made comments.it is well appreciated. Just thought to update this post with some answers we obtained so far. Based on what we read, we observed that the 4runner 's key indeed required programming to get a new one. We did some reading on some toyota forums on how they dealt with this issue, i.e getting a new programmed key and it came out surprisingly that we actually can programme a key cut by the local locksmith ourselves. This would involve some kinda weired process of inserting the original keys into the ignition 5 times, opening the driver's side door about 6 times before inserting a new cut key.....(summarised) Has anybody had any experience doing this? Kindly share your knowledge. Also for the new cut key, must it be a blank key with a programmable chip, or any key can be used for this process.
Thanks
that sequence is usually for the central locking not the ignition/starting of the car
MarkAfoo: I bought and installed a new engine in my 2006 RAV4 sometimes last June when I had a problem with the old engine and I later discovered that the engine oil always found its way to the bottom of coil 'A' (the first coil from the left if you are standing at the front of the bonnet). I noticed this when my Mechanic did a servicing of the car last month and I tried to gauge the engine oil two weeks after. I went back to him to complain and he opened the engine cover and tried to clean the old gum and put new one around the cover and told me that it will not happen again, I now bought a one litre engine oil to top up the oil and I started checking to discovered that the same thing happened after four days. So I took the car to another workshop and I was told that they will have to buy another engine cover 'rubber' and sealant. I stood with this man and I believed he did a thorough cleaning of the engine cover and fixing of the rubber and the sealant and we also allowed the gum to cure for four hours but the same thing happened after four days. Please I need your help on how the problem could be fixed.
take a pic and show us
a rocker cover gasket is a simple job to do if its leaking from rocker gasket
the question would be, did they buy the replacement gasket or they put sealant on top of the old gasket
Afolabisemiu: Good afternoon, please can anybody assist me here. I have a ToyotaCamry 1999. I observed since over five months i have bought it that it consumes a lot of fuel. Inititally I was comparing the fuel consuming rate to the informatiion I haeard about camry on its fuel economy. However I was able to substantiate that it consumes more fuel when me and my brother travel to Ibadan. We both allow our gas to reach red at fuel guage and we make sure the guage is at the same place. We bought exactly N3000 fuel in each car. Alas! when we reached Ibadan from Lagos My own fuel guage is already giving me red while that of my brother remain about 2/3 of what we bought bough. I have changed the plug and the airflow meter is good. The car is not smoking and it doesnt give any sound that signifies the exhaust is faulty. But at time When I warm it in the morning I percieved a mild foul smell from the exhaust but with no black smoke. In fact it drops water and this cold engine white smoke. I also feel tht whenever I fire is when the fuel goes down and few times when i accelerate the level of fire is more than the real movement of thje car
You left lots of important information
Eg engine size of the cars you compared, then load i.e if you had passengers , also average travelling speed all affects fuel consumption, then lastly driving patterns and condition of the car things like service
youngice: Gbam You can learn manual in 4 days But it will take a while to master manual Double shifting Rev matching Engine braking Clutchless shifting Down and Upshifting Arrhhh manual is not sweet it is delicious
Dont scare people all is for racing driver, normal driving you dont need all that
BestySam: I drove for over 4 hours there was no sign of overheating. If I put on the AC and drive for just 20mins the overheating starts. I've accepted my fate I think I'll have to do without the AC for now.
Meanwhile, I just noticed that the starring is getting free. The mechanic I was referred to said there's nothing wrong it's only air and the starring problem would vanish in some days.
So far, my problem is the overheating. Everyone seems to love the car so selling is not an option.
does the car temperature go over 90 or mid point, why am asking because what most people call overheating in nigeria is actually the normal operating temperature due to the fact that if one drives a car that had a thermo removed the temp guage would point half of the normal operating point, then when they get a car that has a thermstat and the guage is midway (operating temperature point) they think the car is overheating
so in your cause tell us the reading you are getting on the gauge whenyou say its overheating
kingreign: Is the ABS light on? Scan the ABS. Does the brake stop the car when pressed normally or unless its pressed hard? I maybe forced to believe the brake pedal assy has been tampered with and its return spring isn't in place.
PS: scanning of ABS doesn't mean it fixes the problem, it only tells you what th problem is.
From the discription, thats has nothing to do with ABS, do you know how ABS works ? Its simply stops the brake from locking all the wheels during braking, his/her problem is the brake pedal not returning after braking
BestySam: I recently bought a used Audi A4 from a nairalander.
The seller told me that the only thing I need to fix is the Shock and every other thing is sound. I went with a mechanic to inspect the car and the mechanic observed the shock weren't working.
After transacting, we left to a workshop to fix the shock. I observed the car overheats whenever I use the AC. I repaired and tested it worked. Few hours later the overheating started after using the AC again.
Also, the starring is strong, I have changed the starring pump it worked very good. After some hours, it started again.
Please I need help as I don't know what to do and I am not ready to spend more money without positive result.
So far I have spent close to 50k without result.
And this is my first car.
fully explain the overheating, only in nigerian were the AC is always linked to overheating, does the temperature go beyond 90
Yes when the AC is turned on the car increases rev becoz of the load from the ac pump but that shouldnt make the car overheat
Then on your powering its most likely you got sold a bleeped up power sterring pump unless, there is an issue with steering rack check if there is no leaks on lines though if you had leaks you would hear thr pump making noise once the resevor is empty
Asegzy: Sir OP ,if u don't want to regret driving a car pls I advise u to run away from the Volvo s40. I know its a very nice looking car with a superb nterior and wonderful audio system But dats it bro. 1.It has a very compact engine which is not adapted to the Nigerian tropical weather so it overheats a lot. 2.when the car overheats the engine knocks immediately. (So in essense ,u must buy a new engine ,no matter how good ur maintenance culture is) 3.the spare parts are very scarce and very expensive 4. The mechanics and electricals of the car are very complex so even experienced mechanics will wreck the car. Seems ure a man of class and style so u can go for a bimmer e46 model or Benz eclass2004 model In short any car is better than the s40.I'm saying this based on experience from myself ,my friends ,and others who have used d car To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Its attractive but its looks are highly deceiving. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!
kulee: Hello friends, can I get three different colour options to paint my car into urgently. Toyota big light currently colour is silver. Please I need a colour that will come out really clean as if am buying a new toks.
You dont choose a colour based on what people say but based on your own preference of colour, then in terms of best finish thats all up to the painter
feelme3: Hello experts in the house. Two days ago my Nissan maxima overheated for the first time. After flushing the radiator, my mechanic asked me to go buy two cans of coolant (greenish).
The issue now is that he has been having a running argument with a fellow mechanic on where to add the coolant. While my mechanic wants to pour it directly into the radiator, this other guy insists that coolant are poured into the radiator reservoir tank. I just had to fill my radiator with water and left for a meeting.
So na why I bring am to the council of elders. So please what is the right way: the radiator or the reservoir tank?
Its all the same but one poured via radiator gets to the engine quicker that the one poured via expansion tank remember its all one all system
thaqib: I recently changed my radiator to double cell after the single cell got bad. It's a camry 2000 . Have since noticed I pay more visits to the petrol station. D mechanic, I think also connected D ignition to D fan directly, so my fan comes on immediately I ignite now. Now which is causing increased fuel consumption, the double cell or D new connection. Abeg, fuel na, 145 naira o...
your car is running cold hence its drinking fuel like crazy
the ECU is getting the reading that the engine temperature is cold so it increase the fuel ratio for the engine get to the operating temperature, your car will never reach it becoz most likely the fool that connected your fan direct mostl chances he took out the thermostat
have you ever started a car in the morning lets say 5am?, if you notice for 2 minutes or so the idle revs are too high, then it settles, is same reason the ECU has been feed the reading that the engine temperature is very low so the revs its self to quickly reach operating temperature which is fuel efficient
GAZZUZZ: if your mechanic truly knows how to check for defects, the only culprit left is the abs pump
i doubt the abs pump why becoz it should affect two opposite wheels
i still insist of the caliper remember someone replaced the brake pads so he pushed back the piston to put the new pads and he drove the car the caliper never retracted back as it should
Goodplace: My car engine oil seems to be black and due for an over haul the price of packaged oil is expensive so am thinking of buying the normal roadside oil to do its overhaul. Will there be any implication? its a Volkswagen passat. please advice.
simple it will cost your more when the car is dead
kellystech: Please I need a solution to this problem, my Honda baby boy doesn't steem fine in the morning. I took it to my mechanic he told me we need to change the 6 plugs which I did and the problem is still there. Nw his saying I will need to service my nozzle but I don't know if that will be the solution. After the engine gets hot it steems very fine
people are throwing in all sorts of spanners
there is one thing clear the car has a problem start in the morning (Cold Start)
to me that points to sensors or poor earth or connection
GAZZUZZ: in an emergency, you will be unable to respond appropriately. I can imagine you pressing both pedals at the same time to bring the vehicle to a halt
besides that people behind would think he is drunk or a learner as the other foot is always touching the brake pedal therefore stop lights are on and off as if he wants to stop
kingreign: You know the best advice you can give yourself. I am not in the best position to give such advice based on the bolded criteria. Besides, its your cash, and ultimately, your car, not mine, so follow your heart, but take your brain along when doing so. ( No offences pls)
i second that
i thinks its being stupid to ask the public which car to go for
making a choice on a car is like picking which woman to pick between two ladies
it comes to personal choice based on many things eg
shape
interior
purpose of the car
myself i got two cars one is convertible 2 door and another one 4x4
4x4 is my workhouse thats the one i use for djing (transport my equipment etc) and thats the one i use for communiting to work so being a 4x4 it give me the freedom i want i.e folding the back seat to put heavy stuff etc and also being in Scotland during winter the road can be tricky with ice/snow so a proper 4x4 finds its true purpose
next year am think to change my nissan Xtrail 2002 and get something nicer and my eyes on Range Rover Vogue 2005-2006, Landrover Discovery 3 2010 or Nissan Xtrail 2010 and above but still i have to make my mind as the Rangerover and Landrover are good cars but not cheap to maintain even when i am a mechanic still they aint cheap as parts are expensive and though if am to buy one people would say i got a nice car yes but maintainance is not cheap so i will to choose between being told to say i got a cool car or save myself few £ by getting a cheap car to run in this case it would an Xtrail
so its the same to you pick a car based on its purpose to you and how cheap will it easy for run within your monthly salary
I've noticed for a while now that sometimes when I throttle I hear some sounds initially before the car picks up... Someone said I need to change my stabilizer silencer...
Please let me know your opinion on this...
If I am to change the stabilizer silencer what could be the cost...
I anticipate your feedbacks...
official there is nothing called stabilizer silencer on a car unless if its those replacement names from nigga
qwertygeni: I drive a 2002 ford escape. I have been battling with a case of excessive hotness of my front right rim to a point that I feel a forcel drag affecting my acceleration and smell of a burning brake pad. My mechanic has checked the calipers and the hub, saying they are OK. He suspected the abs system, to which we temporary disconnected the abs wire but the front wheel still heats up with the drag and burning brake pad odour. We afterwards changed the brake bad to which the wheel still heats up and not as terrible as it was before the pad was replaced. Also, the drag is close to nil but the smell of the burning brake pad still persists. My mechanic is still suspecting the abs system.
Your opinions and advices are welcome sirs!
PS: No check engine light showed when the problem started till now except when we temporarily disconnected the abs when abs and hand brake light showed up. Also, after the brake pad replacement on both front wheels, the left side heats up to but not as excessive as that of the right wheel where the problem has been.
those are signs of a caliper binding i.e when you press the brakes the caliper pushes the brakes pads against the disc and when you take off your foot from brakes the caliper stops to press but when its binding even after releasing your foot the caliper keeps on press the piston inside the caliper doesnt retract back therefore the car drags and abnormal heat is released
