Personally, I don't subscribe to it. Simply because if you can cohabit with each other, then that is already a sign that you want to settle down with each other. So why not go ahead and complete the simple formality of getting married in order to add legitimacy to your cohabitation? At least do a registry wedding if you feel that your pockets are not deep enough for introduction. Nigerian law does not recognise Common law unions and if your cohabitation produces children, Nigerian society (which is global leader in hyprocrisy and double standards) will make the children suffer stigmatisation because of the actions of the parents.

Marriage is not a "simple formality" in majority of the world.
