I think it was the program by Pastor Poju called “the Platform” that projected Obi as different from the rest. Especially when he mentioned how frugal he was, and how he left some surplus in the state coffers.

However, Tinubu’s landmark achievements in Lagos in spite of the withholding of funds by Obasanjo’s federal government from Lagos easily dwarfed Obi’s lackluster performance as governor of Anambra for 8 years, evidenced by the comments by Anambra citizens at the time, which were dug out to counter/dispel the big talk by Obi. This was why Obi could not muster more votes in the southwest, else it would have been a walkover in most of the southwest.

Crime / Re: CCTV Can’t Check ‘one-chance’ Criminal Ring In Abuja – FCTA by 9gerian: 12:35pm On Jun 17, 2023
State police will ensure that there is competition amongst the police forces, which will reflect the management style and capacity of the state governor. The federal police will only step in where the state fails, which becomes an indictment, or when the case interstate interstate. Competition creates efficiency in all systems.

Then, CCTV and other resources will be deployed efficiently, since no state police will like to be indicted or have the federal police do its work for it.

Crime is not so hard to crack with proper police reforms, laws and if properly planned and executed.

amoreobansu:
THE Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has said close-circuit television (CCTV) can not checkmate the activities of ‘one-chance’ criminal gangs in the city.

Speaking on Thursday, June 15 at The ICIR Twitter space dialogue titled, ‘One-Chance: Abuja, Hotbed for Crimes on Commuters’, Aruwa Thomas, Head of Abuja Intelligent Integrated Traffic Information System (AIITIS), a department of Traffic Management, FCT Transportation Secretariat, said the police had tried the CCTV system for tracking criminals, but thieves carted the cameras away.

Thomas said, “You remember the time past when the police mounted CCTV. You recall that all of a sudden, these CCTV got missing. Those CCTV were very expensive. We thought that as beautiful as CCTVs are, you have to hide them to provide security.

“I know that the government is working on something. I might not talk much about that. Even the Transport Secretariat is bringing up something that if you even need to steal it, it will be useless.”

He disclosed that the FCTA was making efforts to integrate all commercial vehicles in the city and give them codes so they could be easily tracked.

He blamed overpopulation for the transportation crisis in the city.

Sharing his experience, Investigations Editor, HumAngle, Kunle Adebajo, said it was unfortunate the one-chance menace persisted in the city four years after he published an investigation into the problem.

Adebajo said that given the techniques criminals deploy in their trade, the transport system was no longer safe in the country.

“When the victims are lucky enough to be taken to the hospital, the hospital will ask for a police report, he said, adding, “I don’t think the police is doing enough. There are a lot of ways to deal with these problems.

“When I talked to the police, they said they had a rapid response. Sometimes, these guys will drive by, the police will not arrest them. Even the victims will scream, and help will not come their way from the police. The police can do more.”

A reporter with The ICIR, Theophilus Adedokun, shared his experience on how he fell victim to one-chance, including his investigation which exposed the strategies the criminals use, the pains they inflict on their victims, and the losses the victims suffer, including being killed when they protest being robbed of their possessions.

One of the contributors, Ogechi Odegbunam, narrated how challenging it is for the robbers’ victims to engage security agents to track their items.

Odegbunam said she once attempted to obtain a police report after falling victim to one chance, and the police demanded N80,000 from her.

The spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, a deputy superintendent of police, failed to show up at the meeting, despite getting an invitation from The ICIR.

Politics / Re: Nigerians Accuse Tinubu Of Tribalism, For Bypassing Brilliant Dr. Obiora by 9gerian: 9:14am On Jun 10, 2023
Well said. But have you observed that there a lot of igbos in the Lagos State civil service who are mostly obidient who openly opposed the APC in favor of labor party at every level in the last elections?

There is therefore a high probability that appointing Dr Obiora will definitely not give the president the confidence of undiluted loyalty to his government and his planned reforms, which become almost equivalent to retaining Emefiele in the position in terms of trust. This may be why he was passed over. Moreover, there is slim chance that if nothing is found against Emefiele then he may resume his duties according to the principle of innocent until proven guilty.

This is why this move is not yet a big deal at least until the unveiling of the full cabinet, which must reflect inclusiveness regardless of party sentiments. These are some of the valid considerations I believe.

Politics / Re: Fuel Subsidy: You Can't Task The Poor To Pay The Rich - NLC Mobilises For Wed by 9gerian: 7:42pm On Jun 05, 2023
1. Those electric buses that Lagos just got should be looked into and arranged for every state of the federation ASAP. They can mix with diesel buses for short to medium terms stability as well. The buses will convey workers across major highways to ease transportation costs for low income workers.

2. Salary review should be done with the private sector involvement so as not to lead to wave of mass lay offs of workers. Both public and private sectors should be supported with low interest loans where needed.

3. The government must reduce its own spending, and ensure that there are no free fuel for any government officials, including the president and all National Assembly members. Everyone must pay premium for pms in solidarity. Anything outside of this is wickedness. 500 per liter is not a joke and should not be for some while others enjoy it freely.

Ultimately, the removal of subsidies (dollar and pms) will seriously stimulate the economy and boosts the employment figures. More people will gradually be pulled out of poverty and household income will grow. Disposable income will also grow accordingly and gradually people will be able to afford their usual cravings that look too drastic to forego after all the palliatives provided for their basic needs.

For the subsidy removal to succeed, the government has to be absolutely transparent and communicate every little detail of the journey. This is while the NLC in conjunction with CLOs and Media play the roles of the watchdogs that monitors, reports on and protects the commonwealth of the people. Then everyone works together!

God bless Nigeria!

The hatred/gang up is not just by Yorubas or Nigerians alone: https://twitter.com/PSAFLIVE/status/1665240600080162816?s=20

franchasofficia:
It is no longer news that in Nigeria, a particular tribe seems to receive the most hateful and disapproval from other Nigerian tribes, and guess the tribe? It is the ever resilient tribe known as the Igbos.

The only thing that unites every other Nigerian tribe in Nigerian politics is the hatred against Igbos. Once you want to rally Hausa, Fulani Yorubas, Kanuri, etc tribes, just come up with a consensus against the Igbos and all the above named tribes will wholeheartedly come to agreement, but when it comes to progressive thoughts and issues of national development, these tribes will never agree or sincerely work together to develop Nigeria, but once it involves hating on Igbos or working against Igbo politically, these tribes will never have a single disagreement and as a neutral observer, you maybe wondering why this is so?

Sit back and watch some prominent Nigerians from other tribes who aren't Igbos confess how the hatred against Igbos started even before the independence.

It will shock you to hear how other tribes have unjustly ganged up against Igbos based on false information, propaganda and twisted histories.

Politics / Re: Subsidy Removal Is Done Solely For Dangote by 9gerian: 4:27pm On Jun 04, 2023
There’s no way I or anyone that is not part of the planning team can have the full picture even after they release the details they want to the public.

The reason is that planning will always include contingencies to cover unforeseen headwinds and circumstances. This was why the GMD of NNPCL was confident stating that prices will come down gradually.

The current prices are most likely put in place to help the petroleum marketers (who own filling stations) to prepare for higher depot prices, and not be able to create any fuss when the local refineries start and sell at market rates, which I suspect may slightly be reduced the price. And with more competition, the prices will be driven down further competitively. Here a responsible government will be proactive to ensure that there is no collaboration by refinery owners on pricing, and should use its influence and tax regimes to stabilize pricing favorably.

Finally, there is no easy way to remove the PMS subsidy because there are very strong forces who do not want that reign of free money to end, and they have a lot of hangers on who will do all to frustrate the stoppage.

Ultimately, most nations whether prudent or reckless are currently being confronted with rising energy costs and the threat of collapse due to Russia - Ukraine War and all tit for tat actions that is seriously fueling high inflation across the world economy. This was after the Covid disruptions. Hence the drastic measures everywhere. Just last week Tunisia joined the financially impacted nations that are slowly walking into insolvency. https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/tunisias-financial-crisis-leaves-sick-struggling-find-medicine-2023-06-01/

Some months ago it was Ghana: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65622715.amp

Egypt: https://www.npr.org/2023/05/13/1176043847/people-struggle-to-afford-food-in-egypts-economic-crisis

It’s tough but continuing to leave things to chance may get even tougher, and usually at short notice. This must be avoided at all costs.

Finally, President Tinubu must reduce the cost of governance ASAP. The NLC on their part must insist and get involved to ensure that the government cuts down its own bloated costs of governance (especially in the National Assembly) to balance out the effects and have better economic gains for the nation.

Incomplete narrative. If dangote got fg loans and got heavily subsidized dollar and would get crude at naira converted prices, why then should he sell above 250 Naira per litre. Tell us since fx is removed, customs, international shipping etc. Nigeria is a slave country

Politics / Re: Subsidy Removal Is Done Solely For Dangote by 9gerian: 1:36pm On Jun 04, 2023
Not as simplistic as you put it. It is more of a symbiotic relationship. The FG needs to stop subsidy and needs local production. Fortunately, Dangote had noticed and prepared to help solve a huge chunk of the problem, hence the Dangote refineries.

Can Dangote or any other refinery enter the market against subsidized fuel? If yes, will that solve the problem of smuggling and having to subsidize the whole west Africa consumption?

Success1981:
Whether he is using strong voodoo on the various leaderships or they are part of the business. Nigeria's democracy has been so far created for Dangote because I remembered in 1999 when Obasanjo banned importation of cement and gave Dangote full monopoly of cement distribution and this is how subsequent administrations have been working for him aside Yaradua.
Just 2/3 days in the opening of Dangote refinery and this is what we get.

Lagos should prepare for more influx of people seeking better fortunes.

The FRSC should be vigilant to detain transporters who put fuel in jerry cans while traveling to save costs.

Hamachi:
Laconically speaking, subsidy is GONE as mentioned in the inaugural speech was as good as pronouncing any other items of the speech which is not bad.

The removal is obviously not effective yet. People need to see this and focus on the sellers/marketers who are hoarding the fuel in an attempt at to sell at a higher rate.

Price regulation is important to cushion the subsidy fraud, and I hope government will look into it.
