Education › Re: How Is Your Class Topper Fairing In Life So Far? by Asour:

Competing and measuring intelligence with score is something I've always hated and will continue to hate. The educational system is doing more harm than good.
That's not really true.

Excessive focus on grades/grading is what's unhealthy and NOT the grading itself.

Statistics (which is what grading is) provides us with an undeniable measure for assessing performance in all life's endeavor. Note the word undeniable.

Without grades (quantitative measures) how do you asess your child's performance or better still improvement in academics?. How do you differentiate between potential investment options(ROI) ? Potential employers ? Even goods to buy?(i.e. pricing)

I would even make a stretch to say that in choosing a spouse, (amongst potential suitors) we subconsciously grade each and choose the highest ranking suitor — using our arbitrary albeit personal score points.

Without quantitative measures AKA grading there's no way to decide students for admittance into the universities since not all applicants can be admitted.

Grades, while not being perfect, helps to reduce the lies we could all tell ourselves about performance.

The incumbent president has been in office for over 34 years (since 29th Jan. 1986) shocked

How is this even possible?
Dictators in power for >20 years can't imagine life without power.

That's why they'll rarely ever concede.

Power becomes an extension of themselves.

I think no democratic leader should lead beyond 10 years. Not to get too used to power. Power intoxicates.

Imagine never having to worry about virtually anything in life again. And not being held accountable. That's almost godly.

I would not make the joke myself but come on.

If you were to scour the Web for crude jokes against the President across facebook Twitter or Instagram you may be prepared to arrest ~100 people per day across Nigeria averagely. And this is a gross underestimation.

Looks like they are trying to show an example or someone is just being overzealous.

But I wouldn't make such a joke though.

To me, I think Pep a failure because he can't give a team what they need. he only give them what they already have. Mourinho will give a team what they need and not what they have. that only make Jose Mourinho the best choice, Even Reneiry is better than Guardiola because he took underdogs 'Lecester city from nowhere to win a trophy for them.

mynd44
You're speaking with the benefit of hindsight. And I don't really blame you. We all forget soon.

Go read about Pep's start at barca. Start here:

https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/174/uefa-champions-league/2015/05/06/11458192/how-guardiola-turned-barcelona-and-messi-into-the-best-in

No one expected his achievements. Now it seems inevitable.

I'm not saying who better between both Mourinho & Pep. I don't know. But anyone saying his achievements at barca was inevitable is being insincere.
Family › Re: Some Damaging Words My Wife Said During A Quarrel by Asour: 6:35pm On Jan 11, 2021
Shokoloko:
Great question. Its the love languages that let you know what your spouse will consider "been taken for granted". I didn't know these until I saw it play out in my marriage.
I love (acts of service) not really gifts or words of affirmation so my spouse couldn't understand why I was NOT tripping for the human hairs, and watches and shoes and Lexus he bought me - I really don't care much for them.
I found him rather kind and sexy when he was washing dishes in the kitchen with me or joining me in my little farm.

And he always complained that I took him for granted and never gave him gifts. I did give him gifts but I later realized his love language is GIFT GIVING, so the bigger the gift, the more it meant to him.
So now whenever I want to give my spouse a birthday gift I start putting it together months in advance. I would not buy a phone of more than 60K for myself cause it means nothing to him but I know his love language is gifts so I gift him some crazy unreal phones (His eyes widen like a kid's when I hand him the latest edition).
Of course he still buys me lovely gifts but my thank you when he has done an act of service is both in words and in kind.
Thanks.

You're clearly more experienced. I don't have any though.

I always want to be able to buy all I want and consider it tiring to outsource my happiness to anybody else — who could annoy me soon.

Marriage seems like a necessary but tiring trade-off [Losing one's personal conveniences for the thrill and feels of companionship].
The constant need to please another who may or may not reciprocate.

God help us.

1. She sent you a really disrespectful text.
2. In her text she says "Its over". When someone is done they will not bother to announce it. Apparently she isnt done.
3. She was upset when she did not get a reaction from you. I think she still likes you.
4. I am very concerned if the only thing your spouse has done in all the years of marriage is pumping out kids. She doesn't even keep the family well fed and the home clean? She leaves the kids to go their own way once she delivers them? You have to breastfeed your kids yourself?! Strange
5. Does she continuously refer to your disability? If yes, she pities you: no love. If no, it was a one time act of foolishness.
6. Please place your boundaries. She should leave if this is about pity and if it is not she should never refer to your disability again.
7. There are 5 love languages. If you do 150% of four and it is not your spouse's love language it means nothing...so check if the unimaginable things you did for her happiness actually resonate with her.
8. Do not abscond from your own home anymore.
9. Saving your spouse's life is not spectacular - it is expected. Five pints of my blood is in my spouse's body right now. Its not a big deal
Is there really anything as love language?

Are there really 5?

I sincerely think it was a brilliantly manufactured concept to sell books and "Relationship" seminars. I could be wrong though.

It seems the most beneficial key to keeping a relationship with any SANE /reasonable person is to not take them for granted AKA respect. Other things are supplementary.

In fact I don’t have energy to talk much now.

Thanks bros.
I am convinced by your perspective.

However you should know Nigerians. The thinking is : If it's that bad, how come you are still there (not just surviving) but thriving enough to assist others.

That's where you have to be a bit more elaborate on the profile of those likely to make it in EU and elsewhere abroad.

I presume there is the Professional /Student class that are better positioned to seek better opportunities as they are in the skilled workforce.

And then there is the "hustler" class (for lack of a better word) who would have difficulties due to COVID-19 and economic lull in EU. But this class of individuals already have it tough in Nigeria and can't believe it could be any tougher IF they head abroad.

For a legal migrant into most european Countries, I believe (I don't know for sure) it is easier to live comfortably than most urban Nigerian cities.

Cheers.

There's no immorality in boarding schools that's not obtainable in the larger society. Heck the boarding school is a little "society" albeit controlled with its own rules.

It's not for everyone. I don't always like it. But it does breed independence in children earlier — when done well.

One thing I am sure is that she is from a wealthy family, so there is no need leaving the country to start again in a foreign land
But the North also has the greater number of poor Nigerians, right?

Apparently your hypothesis is not really consistent.
Since their poor should be more desperate to leave.

OR could it be that there are other cultural /social reasons to their decision to stay?

We have advocated that this apprentice system be adopted or if not encouraged by the government. This is a system that is capable of generating employment in the long run where entrepreneurs are adopted in time, schooled purposefully and made to stand on their own while as well making millionaires in the process.

Ya gazieeee...
A very nice practice they have. Probably the best apprenticeship system in Nigeria.

BUT it is limited.

In Macroeconomics Value added is what's important.
This system lends itself mainly to TRADE (buying/selling) based skills.

The apprenticeship systems that yields more value is a SKILLED + Trade based system. Kind of the type obtainable in GERMANY. Where a Youth is groomed in a choosen skill for 5+ years and grows to be an expert.

We can start from somewhere though.
And this is good.

First of all School promises to be the building ground of basic life skills, of the emotional and intellectual well being of its students. A school also promises to make a student ready to take up the challenges of the world they will be facing.

They claim to instill values that will help students make more informed decisions and distinguish between the right and the wrong and find the best path for oneself.

In a competitive market environment, you need something to help you stand out from the crowd of other applicants. A good degree gets you ‘in the door.’ Then you need to prove yourself, because all a degree shows is that you have studied the basics.

A degree isn’t everything, however. If you have other fungible skills, especially in IT that are demonstrably valuable, an intelligent employer will recognise these.

Going to school is a lesson itself besides whatever subject you study
Hello??

Jeff Bezos actually finished his degree— BS EE & Comp Sci.— at Princeton.

Go check.

Now that you've confirmed that the Richest man in the World is a graduate, go to school!

Just joking. BUT the people you've mentioned are dedicated individuals. They're a rarity in the society.

Bill gates for e.g has read ALL Vaclav smil's books.
I struggle to even finish one (poor dedication).

School is the most structured learning environment that provides credibility to employers through certification.

If you don't mind working for yourself and can dedicatedly learn effectively on your own, by all means drop out. You'll be making the best use of your time.

Not that it is any of my business or that they are doing anything wrong BUT chalking it up to "operating costs" to "stay afloat" doesn't cut it really.

LUXURY goods/services everywhere have no relationship with costs. They're arbitrarily and perceptively priced, targeted at aspirational consumers/taste makers.

Most of these HUGE margins go into the lifestyle of the promoters. Do not you see them spraying money excessively at shows/programmes for the buzz? Or it is the jet lifestyle? These are supported by the huge margins NOT costs!

As a check on myself, I try never to accept any award for excellence /good done. This may seem extreme, but it trains me to derive satisfaction from the work done. NOT on others appreciation of the work done.

In doing so, I take control of my satisfaction and keep the enemy (ego) in check.
