Jaqenhghar: Im not bad mouthing anything here my friend. Im stating facts. Dont compare the average Nigerian with a foreign expat who probably doesnt have to worry where his next meal will come from, has niggerians falling over themselves to please him. For him he is living the life he cant live in his home country. Over here he is treated like a demi god by people who should know better. Why wont he say he prefers it? ..and you choosing to see your society through his eyes is just sad. Once again you're making unnecessary assumptions. You're the one talking about society while I'm talking about individuals. We come into this world as individuals and we make our own destiny as individuals regardless of wherever providence determined that we should be born. If Nigeria is not working for you then please leave, but don't deny that some people are making it work for them. |

Some of us here shouting that abroad is bad..dat it is not good to travel out..dat u must remain in dis country to rebuild it..if any of them win a US visa lottery right now na dem go first kawa to yankee.trust we nigerians na . I'm not saying people must stay in Nigeria. All I'm saying is that traveling abroad does not automatically mean that one's life will be better. If you can afford to go and school or work in the US directly from naija you are probably an upper middle class person already. Poor people cannot do that. Sadly the US has since eliminated the visa lottery option for Nigerians. They say we are too many there already. |

In factthis your statement ...depending on how much money... shows you have a one dimensional outlook on life and you need to travel more and be exposed. When one person dies abroad it is news. Hundreds die here and people shrug it off like its nothing. You talk of having money to have a better life can you name one thing your money can buy in this shithole that is qualitative and responsive to your needs? There is nothing in my post that disagrees with your general point. You don't know me and it's very unintelligent to make assumptions about someone based on faceless posts on an anonymous online forum. My assertion is that everyone is entitled to their individual choices in life. If you have enough money you can be a global citizen and your location no longer matters. jefy: Hello Friends,
Am sure you all are having a great time today? I,d always wanted my kids to gradually grow into the medical profession. I guess it does no harm to dream..lolz. Every parent always strive for a particular direction for their kids, some turn out what their parents dream and work for, others follow a different path...
In this discuss, I solicite contributions, info, suggestions, advice and professional view points on the subject matter.
( in summary, i want my kids to be doctors, from their early educational stage, how do i begin to groom them towards this direction) Note: i will in no way stop them towards their dreams if it's in the right path. Am just thinking aloud and trying to look ahead.
Thanks for your contributions. My advice is this. Kill your selfish dream and don't ever give your kids any hint that you have a preferred path for their lives. Take it from someone who knows first hand, this your dream will turn into a nightmare for your children if you don't get rid of it. |

GraGra247: Much as I sympathize with the lady and all female rape victims, I'd like to point out that women in these modern times have been sooooo psychologically manipulated to feel and believe that rape and sexual harassment should make you feel worthless and frustrated and depressed. In fact should signal the end of your life and dignity. This is why many ladies take their lives afterwards.
So much that if a lady comes out from a rape encounter feeling and looking normal she's made to feel that she's a wh0re or she's doing something wrong.
Unfortunate Ladies and women that got raped in the olden and earlier years of this same earth, still lived their lives to the fullest without trauma or therapy. Sounds like you think rape is normal or at least should be normalised. I wonder where you got the data that suggests to you that women who were raped in the olden days lived happily ever after. You think you made sense but you are just another rape apologist. |

Reader530: Good day nairalanders. I want a sincere advice from you people.
A friend visited me almost two weeks ago. He has never visited me before, but when he came I thought he would not spent more than two days because apart from the cloth he was wearing the day he came, he didn't bring additional cloth, no brush, no soap, etc.
At first, he told me he can stay with me even up to a month with one cloth. He said, besides, he was sacked from his work.
Today, he forgot that he told me he was sacked; but he told me that he is on annual leave. The father asked him to come home for burial of his relative but he told me he would not go. I told him Npower has not paid us, but I will source for his transport, but he doesn't understand me. He thought, I will give him the whole money even if Npower pays, all the money I planned and budgeted for his coming was exhausted. I added some money to make sure he eats good meal thrice in a day.
In a nutshell, I am tired, I want to be alone for now. How should I tell him I want him to leave in a pleasant manner. Please positive advice will be highly appreciated.
Thanks all Tell him you don't have any money again that he has to contribute to his own upkeep. Hopefully he will open up to you when you start asking him for money and he will tell you what is really going on and what his plans are. |

I am still learning though, but The RCCG that I know, where I worked as a marriage counsellor would not wed a Christian and muslim couple. So, why ordain a wife of a muslim as a Pastor? You better fear God and keep your mouth shut. If she herself was an unbeliever when she married him and she later got born again then she is required by scripture to remain in her marriage unless her husband wants to end it. There is nothing stopping her from serving as a pastor in that situation. |

NairalandFAYOSE: pardon my blunders. I was aware she has a baby before we met but still continued the relationship because the baby is with the father. she told me it was a mistake and the guy's family doesn't support their relationship. so they went their different ways while the guy kept the baby.
when we started, I found out she's humble, hardworking and she's everything I ever wanted in a woman. so we got married 4 years ago and have a 3 year old son and 2 beautiful twins (just 3 months old).
now the problem started when she went to church and her ex brought her 7 years old daughter unannounced. that he's married now and can't continue taking Care of the girl. she called me from church and told me. immediately I told her not to bring a child thats not mine to me. she now took the baby to her mom and came home to meet me with my kids. she has been begging me since to allow the baby in our home because the mother gave her 3 days to come and take her baby from her.
nairalanders pls I need your advice on this. those it make sense that I take the baby while the father is out there enjoying his life. You married her knowing she had a child with someone else. Did you think that a mother would never again be part of a young child's life? While she is still alive? No way. Your wife is responsible for the life of that little girl and if you are a good husband you would support her in her responsibility to the best of your ability. I wish you and your family well. |

dragon2: Is it overpopulated Lagos that is to blame for poor economic growth of the country or all those smaller populated states with no industry? Bro. I'm not blaming Lagos for anything at all. I'm using it to illustrate what happens when population growth gets out of hand in a developing economy. Everybody starts to move to those few areas where there is high economic activity. If the population of Nigeria reduces then the strain on Lagos won't be so much. |
Health › Re: Necessity Of Birth Control, Family Planning In Nigeria by babadee1(m): 12:21pm On Jul 25, 2018 |
dragon2: Yet,it is the Lagos population and GDP that is the motor rather than the drag on Nigeria's growth isn't it?The same Lagos has one of the highest GDP/capita in Nigeria. One of the wealthiest states, and can run independent of Federal aid. Do you know why? because it is the most industrialized state in Nigeria.Proves my point. Many Middle belt states have smaller populations yet are much poorer/capita than 'overpopulated' Lagos and are not going anywhere fast. A family of 3 with a deadbeat dad who earns only.#3000 is worse off than a family of 6 with a father than brings in #300,000.It is not population but productivity. You talk about human capital? What is the function of Government? If we cut our population(the so called solution) would human capital suddenly improve? I have already answered your question in the very post that you quoted. If you don't see it then you don't want to see it. Hopefully our policy makers will understand the issue and do something about our population problem before it's too late. To the Lagos issue. The level of industrial activity in Lagos is high compared to other parts of Nigeria but it's extremely tiny compared to what is needed to grow the economy to be able to accommodate over 180 million people. The little bit of industrialisation is what drives migration into Lagos from all over the country and from neighbouring countries as well. This rate of migration and population growth is not sustainable for the future. Anybody can see that |
Health › Re: Necessity Of Birth Control, Family Planning In Nigeria by babadee1(m): 11:12am On Jul 25, 2018 |
dragon2: I humbly disagree. It is a copt out. Population control is a lazy way to development as a country without dealing with the underlying problem . Cutting the population does not increase transparency, government efficiency and efficacy. Infact, there is no development, just increased wealth per capita from natural resources. As I said earlier, even at 73million in 1980 and at 50k to $1, we actually went backwards and de-industralized. The more wealthy a nation is with bad government and a small population, the faster they fall into ruin due to financial recklessness and corruption.
India which you quoted had a population of approx 10x ours in the same year (700M,1980).However,they have been developing industrially, albeit slowly. You're still missing the point bro. Population control is not the only thing that needs to be done. However whatever else you may do you will not get the desired results if your population is spiralling out of control. Lagos is the smallest state in Nigeria and one of the smallest cities in the world. It has a population of 18 million now. In 50 years it's projected to be close to 90 million in Lagos alone. How is industrialisation going to be possible where there is no human capital? The majority of Nigeria's population are a drag on the economy. No productivity value whatsoever, not trained for an industrialised economy and effectively untrainable. When a family only has one or two children they are forced to invest as much as possible into their kids. It's no longer a game of chance the way it is now. Give birth to as many children as possible then hope that one or two of them will make it to take care of others. That is the mentality of our society today and it needs to change. |
Health › Re: Necessity Of Birth Control, Family Planning In Nigeria by babadee1(m): 11:40pm On Jul 24, 2018 |
dragon2: My brother,Nigeria's population in the 80s was close to 73 million, yet we were de-industrialising. China had a population of 980 million and was accelerating In industrialization and economic growth. Our population is a catalyst for our current poverty levels but not the cause. Ethnic bigotry,Bad Governance and lack of the meritocratic process and a reward system is the primary cause. ELDS (Educationaly less developed states) is a classic case of ethnic, affirmative action that rubbished meritocracy and the reward system and placed people in positions of trust who shouldn't be there ,this people in-turn,bring in those worse than themselves to shield their position. This, is one of the cesspits that bred the monster that is corruption today. A monster that has tied this nation down.
It is only those who expect to be fed that see population as a hindrance.Give a man tools and he will feed himself. As long as growth in power generation and industrial growth is lagging behind population growth, poverty will occur. If a population stops growing it will age, become less industrious and ultimately slip into decline. I'm not saying it's the cause of all our problems. I'm saying we can never move from a low income developing country status without first putting population control measures in place. It's a totally different message I'm trying to pass across. The issues of ethnic bigotry, nepotism and corruption also exist in other countries as well. A good example is India. But they are doing much better than we are because of one simple fact. They always plan the future of their country. Let us also start to plan. |

Population isn't the problem
Singapore doubled it's population and still doing well.
India had 500 million people about 40 years ago and experienced famine.
Today with over 1 billion people, India is exporting food and has good economy.
What about the US? 325 million in population but throwing away food etc and is arguably the most powerful nation of the world And who told you all those countries did not plan their population? Every country plans based on where they are, where they want to be at a certain time and the resources currently available to them. None of those countries you mentioned would be able to improve their economy if they did not have processes in place to manage their population growth. You even forgot to mention China sef. People love to talk about the Chinese economic miracle. The second biggest economy in the world and on the way to becoming the biggest. They have 1.4 billion population but their economic turnaround was preceded by a long period of a strictly enforced one child only policy. If Nigeria enforces a strict two children per woman policy today, I promise you in twenty years you won't recognise this country again. |
