diordaves: Sorry to read about this. Don't wonder if artisans can't read or write. They can't. This is where the services of a tertiary educated/COREN trained engineer comes into play.
I will go for blocks, the old fashioned bricks and mortar. The plaster board option could be more expensive and less effective with the current state of affairs. Why?
If you took out the section of the wall to increase the room space, this is doable but you need to strengthen that same section to prevent the roof from caving in. I'm not sure if you did all round chaining, even if you did, the beam span of the taken out wall need to be looked by a structural engineer to confirm if it will support the roof. Block walls are not only for partitioning but do support the roof. So take out a wall, you create another problem.
Now you talked about plaster board partitioning as done in the UK/USA. For such scenario, you need to introduce a Rolling Steel Joint, that's is RSJ steel beam to support the roof first, then the stud partitioning, then sound proofing and then, finally the plaster board. See photos. The last photo is a finished living area, look properly at the ceiling, you would notice the hanging RSJ. That section of the wall was taken out to open up the living room for more space.
For your stud partitioning, you need 2×4 termites resistant treated hardwood. These don't come cheap in Nigeria. You also need the RSJ. By the time you factor in all these with the cost of expertise labour, you have made the remedy so complicated and expensive where a simple cheap brick and mortar will do just fine. It is a simple process of shifting the wall outward. Block work is a superior solution.
I will go for blocks partitioning anyday, anytime in Nigeria. It is cheap, fire resistant, sound proof and built to last with minimal maintenance. There is no such thing as "Coren trained engineer". All engineers are either registered with Coren or NSE or both depending on your preference and that comes into play given years of practice, putting in an application and sitting for the exam and passing it. Generalizing that artisans can't read or write is quite funny. |

rabcnesbit: Good day house. Hope you are all well. I need your advise please. I visited my building for the first time since the work started (building is now nearly completed - roofing and plastering already done, but thank God floor tiling not already done yet). Despite the fact that paid for an approved building plan, the builders still got most of the internal measurements wrong! I am just baffled and completely speechless! How difficult is it to read the measurements in a plan and follow it! I wonder whether some of these building artisans can actually read and write! The worst of it all is the master bedrooms in the downstairs flats. Believe me that I am not exaggerating that you will struggle to put in a double bed (forget a king size) and you won't have any room left for even a small dressing table, and the space they demarcated for wardrobe is only wide enough for a single wardrobe. I mean this is meant to be the master bedroom for the Mr and Mrs, and you can only squeeze in a single wardrobe! Anyway, to cut a long story short, I am thinking of breaking one side of the wall (the one demarcating the room from the corridor) and extend it out a bit. For some reason, the stupid people made the corridor as wide as a football field at the expense of the room, so there is space to extend the wall out). My big question is that (too cut down on costs) can I use plaster board partition, like they use in the UK, US etc, for the new internal wall, which is just one side), instead of blocks. Or is this something they do not use/do in Nigeria? Thank you. Sorry about that. But please do not put the entire blame on the artisans. You will have to upload the design plan of the structure indicating the affected area so we here could be able to proffer best solution to put up a wall extending the room. |

An hour later, he called and was like "someone saw both of us(I and the girlfriend) coming out of my apartment". I don't know how to prove my innocence and please I really need you guys input on this matter. I don't know how to make him believe me. I know my writing is bad, but that's not what matters for now.
Please I seriously need your advice guys. I swear with my life and father's grave I cannot do such As long as you know you did nothing wrong then you owe no one explanation. Also stop swearing before you harm yourself unconsciously. |

Who is saying rice was for the rich back then? Those who could buy, cook and eat uncle bens rice and the other existing foreign rice were considered to be rich or average earners. The rest had to do with our local rice( abakaliki rice), that you had to sit down properly and select stones out of it before cooking. So every house hold was privileged to have and eat rice. Cooking it on Sundays was just a norm and it was pretty special. Sunday rice then was really special. Mom's took time to cook. |

lawman88: Well, as a lawyer, you made a serious mistake. There is a fierce legal implications of what you did and you may be jailed despite they are owing you salaries. What you did is called fraud and there is no excuse for fraud.
The best thing you would have done was to contact a lawyer to write a letter to your firm giving them a time frame to pay up your salaries. If they refused, them your lawyer will take legal action.
What you did, you may loose both your salaries and the company may even frame you up that you diverted millions of naira to your personal use which may end you in jail.
My advice: Remit all the money with you, then tell them to pay up your salaries. If they refused, get a lawyer to write to them and if they still refused, go to court while still working for them. Don't resign, if they sack you while the case is in court, it will be to your advantage. Are you willingly to render your services free to the OP, pending when they pay him if they choose to take him to court then he will subsequently pay you after you have won the case for him ? |

Ayo25: Please lawyers in the house I seek your advice and help over my tussle with my firm. They have concluded plans at my firm to arrest my guarantors. The same firm that is owing me backlog of salaries would go after my guarantors because at some point when delay in payment of salaries became unbearable for me, I decided to stop remitting whatever I made from my production for them until I am paid by them. By the companys standard it is wrong, but there was no way I could manage the situation and as a matter of fact you need money to make money for them which if your production was not up to scratch you will be queried. So because I could not secure another job I remained in the job. At the initial stage I would go out of way to make money for them and remit everything but at the end of the month, bang there would be a deafening silence. No salary. The situation became so bad that at some point I was owed five months. So I decided enough is enough. So I began to withold the money I made from my productions for them until they pay me too. I decided on this course of action especially because I heared that what they did to people in time past is that after owing staffs for months, they will now pay lets say four out of nine months and brazenly tell you to forget the remaining five or go to court. I do not want to feel used by anybody or firm so I decided that at every point in time I must be with some of their money. So I wont be on the receiving end if they put up any funny behaviour. So some weeks ago the firm eventually discovered what I have been up to. I was asked to submit all their equipments which I did. So they demanded that I pay up all what I am owing them. When I did my calculation, they are owing me a little bit more than I am owing them. I asked to be paid my entitlements too. They insist I should pay them first. Someone in their ranks exposed their insecerity that I have been sacked and will not be paid anything if I obliged them and Pay up their money. They started cajoling me to pay. I offered that they should deduct their their money from my salaries with them. They rejected flatly and said they will be going to arrest my guarantors. Lawyers in the house please advise me on how to go about this. I dont want them to go near my guarantors at all. Don't be scared bro. They will not go near your guarantors, be rest assured. If they wanted to do anything , they would have arrested you in the first instance. Do not fall for the cajole. If you dish out any money to them then be prepared to be sacked without any benefits. Be courageous. They have no case against you. Never be scared. |

pizapato: I've noticed a lot of confusion about granite and gravel.
Based on knowledge of geology, granite is not limestone.
Granite is an igneous rock, while limestone is a sedimentary rock. Most people now use crushed granite (or the slightly métamorphosed equivalent "granite gneiss" ) as aggregate in concrete, I don't know if limestone can also be used.
Gravel can be derived in two ways, some are deposited just like sand and where they can be mined. They usually consist of different types rock fragments which have been eroded, transported (reason why they are usually rounded) and deposited in the current location. Rock fragment present might included, granite, quartzite, gneiss, iron stone e.t.c and many other rock type. The other type that is also referred to as gravel is quartzite rock which is usually massive, But require less effort to break due to the presence of high amount of fracture. It sometimes occur with laterite (weathering of the rock produces laterite) It's either you had a good teacher or lecturer back then in school or probably you read about it and clearly can put a difference between . .. |

My technical drawing teacher, a graduate of civil engineering doing his nysc , cannot be wrong. During my nysc days in the middle belt, in the ministry I served, that is what I was told is, gravel. My director, head of engineering services department and the rest engineers in the department can't be also wrong. Do you know the aggregate called 3/8 coarse sand; its also referred to as 3/8 gravel. They are all stones or rock deposits in different forms mined from different locations. |

lagosrd: The use of building codes begins with the planners, architects before the engineers. There is no argument in that. What I'm saying is that we should all work together instead of saying who comes first or last . After all when it comes to construction, a civil/structural engineer can work fantastically fine without an architect but every architect needs the engineer. So we should harness our abilities/ideas , work as a team and complement one another. |

KingRabota: My friend, we're talking about BUILDING codes. These codes are designed and implemented by professionals WHO should be thoroughly grounded in Engineering practice. The job of an architect is to DESIGN he's like an artist, his work is to draw a beautiful looking structure. The engineer looks at those drawings and using his scientific n Technical background brings them to life. It's very common in nigeria for architects to design and supervise. In case you didn't know this is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE! If during site inspection it is discovered that an architect is supervising the project. It can lead to a jail term. Come to think of it. If a mechanical engineer or any other engineer who ISN'T a Civil engineer is discovered supervising a construction site. He/she will have their practising licence revoked and will face prosecution(ask the petrochemical engineer who supervised TB joshua's collapsed castle ,talk less of an over glorified draughtsman. Fashola is a lawyer. He has ZERO idea of what it takes to run an Engineering establishment. Politicians have stolen the jobs of Engineers because, engineering projects are capital intensive. By the time we start placing round pegs in round holes (Minister of Works. Housing is an engineer) maybe then we will start seeing better and higher quality infrastructural projects Nigerians are all affected by complex problems one way or the other. Wherever construction is involved and especially building structures of any size, an architect is the first followed by the civil/structural engineer, etc, etc. That is how it is internationally. While each professional is taught differently and they have different approach towards solving a problem, the end is getting the work done safely with the right tools given the time frame and resources. It is because we lack respect for one another in our respective fields that's why all this are turning up to be issues for discussion. |

The problem we have in this country is that every profession wants to be recognised. I wonder what will happen when there's a meeting with the Civil Engineers.
Instead of putting our heads together to bring results we are busy trying to play who is superior to another in the construction industry when we all know every profession is relevant. Not one can do without the other, but the case is different in Nigeria. |

For the ply wood,I would just drop the idea. I can't faint. The use of gravel in building construction was discontinued for usage in concrete mix based on engineering research/findings. Gravel is an alternative aggregate material to use based on cost. But granite is better. You'll just have to make a choice. |

Kinda confused and I need your advice.
Can I use gravel for a decking project?Though I know granite is the standard been used but due to constraints on my financial muscle,I wish to know the side effect if a two bedroom twin flat is decked using gravel instead of granite.
Secondly, can I use ply woods supported with bamboo sticks to hold the decking instead of the normal 1 by 12 planks?
Thanks. Ply boards are of different types and thickness. If you are referring to that type which is about 1/2" or 3/4" flexible and light weight then that's a complete no go area for decking usage. The disadvantage of using gravel is that it does not bond well when used due to its spherical nature. And if a concrete mix using such as aggregate comes in contact with constant water , you'll notice hair line cracks and it easily wears off. I know its being used in some parts of the eastern region. |

That reference code is the only code you can use to actually prove the transfer went true. You can as well take it to the recipient bank as proof and they will use it to also tell you if its authentic. With that code you have a strong case if that money is not in the recipients account. |
