Politics › Re: APC Governors Assemble To Ask Buhari For Bailouts by bjdon: 10:21am On Jun 22, 2015
How can the FG bailout the states, when the FG itself is broke? The FG has been borrowing massively to pay salaries and meet other expenses. Painful as it is the current economic downturn is EXACTLY WHAT NIGERIA NEEDS. People need to be shaken out of their zombie like complacency and start to hold their leaders to account.
On a Macro level only a massive and substantial reconstructing of the nation will arrest the current decline.

The simple truth is that the current 36 state, almost 600 LGs, Federal structure is not fit for purpose, not viable and will eventually collapse.

Nigeria needs to go back to regional model, with between 6 to 10 regions all responsible for the bulk of their financial affairs. The FG will only focus on defense, foriegn affairs Macro economic strategy. The other core responsibility of the FG would be mega infrastructure like high speed rail links, power generation, world class highways...etc. In such a model each region would then be FORCED to look inwards towards it's strengths and resources, just like in the First republic where we had the groundnut pyramids in the North, cocoa in the SW...etc.
As long as we continue with this current 'rate collecting' model, then anytime we have oil shocks, the whole country will experience a downturn.

BTW the G7 Nations have made a commitment to do away with fosil fuels by 2050 and China is actually ahead of the west in green technology, so in 35 years time, the oil will be basically worthless anyway, best to start implementing the reforms that will put us in a position for sustained growth regardless of the economics of the oil market.
Politics › Re: PDP Appointed Ministers And Military Chiefs Are Still In Their Posts by bjdon: 1:14pm On Jun 18, 2015
kokoA:
It took GEJ six weeks to appoint his ministers, besides the senate is on recess.. It makes no sense to remove service chiefs now when we are in the middle of a war.. On heads of government agencies, I think the OP and his cohorts are just trying hard sound intelligent when they are not. Just yesterday, Mr. President requested for the full account details of all government agencies, this is a process of handover or you guys were expecting him to just sack all heads of agencies without knowing the state of what they are leaving behind? Nigerians are not use to systematic way of doing things, they enjoy the "gra-gra" method.. That's why we are where we are today.. Smh.
Ok let's knock this 'It took GEJ 6 weeks.....'nonsense on the head once and for all. When GEJ first became President it was after the death of Yardua. There was ALREADY a full functioning govt in place. There were ministers, a Sec to govt, chief of staff...etc. He could afford to take his time to make changes he wanted, because THERE WAS NO VOID OR GAP IN THE GOVT OF THE COUNTRY. The same was the case after his relection. In fact what GEJ did after 6 weeks was more a reshuffle of an existing govt.
For God's sake I really don't understand what passes for brains in some Nigerians. Here is a Man who won the presidential election at the end of March. There was no contesting the result from GEJ so he had all the time in April and May to consider his appointments. Now it's almost a month since the inauguration and 3 months since the election and he does not even have a chief of staff? Come on people open your eyes and stop supporting blindly. Many of you are under 30 it's YOUR future at stake. You need to learn to not support any leader blindly , but rather hold them to a high level of account. If you don't do that they will continue to take you for a ride.
The problem with the Buhari govt, is the internal conflict within APC. There is a power struggle there and that's what precluding any appointments. Nigerians need to put pressure on them to put their selfish ambitions aside and put the country first.
Politics › Re: 100 Killed By Boko Haram's Booby Trap In Monguno, Borno State by bjdon: 12:31pm On Jun 17, 2015
May the souls of all those killed by this horrible act, rest in peace. Amen

Please let's avoid pointless Goodluck good/Buhari bad commentry. It's rather juvenile and serves no purpose. Let's try and keep debates/comments mature and intellectual.

On that note I have nothing but the highest scorn and condemnation for the Buhari administration. How can a president in a time of major insurgency not appreciate the urgency of getting key appointments in place. Is Buhari going to wage the war on Boko Haram on his own? The way he talks it seems he wants to do everything himself. He needs a minister of defense to implement new strategies for counter insurgency following international best practice. He needs to replace the existing service and intelligence chiefs who have failed woefully in the basic duties.

Additionally you need other organs of govt involved, the education ministry needs to provide emergency schooling for the displaced kids, the health ministry needs to ensure that the the wounded and maimed are receiving specialist treatment, basically the whole govt needs to be involved in the effort.

How can he then say that he does not understand why people are in hurry for him to make appointments? Let me spell it to you Mr president: PEOPLE ARE DYING, YOUR LAND IS ON FIRE, get your appointments in place so governance can move forward. You were elected almost 3 months ago. No more blaming anything on GEJ. You are the president and the buck stops with you.

This is not a very good excuse, the states are supposed to generate revenue also what do the governors do with all the money at their disposal I feel its time people monitor the activities and spending of the state governors because majority of them have no idea on how to run a poultry farm talk more of a state...
Very true. The states are actually supposed to be fully autonomous and should be running on their IGR. Also maybe the governors should explain what exactly they do with the monthly security vote?? Considering the fact that the police, SSS and other law enforcement are all Federal govt controlled why does any state even have a security budget? huh huh

Politics › Re: PDP And Gej Supporters : A Call For Reconciliation by bjdon: 9:53pm On Jun 15, 2015
When GEJ went to Chad to solicit assistance in the war on BH, EL-Rufai insinuated that he was going to plan more BH attacks. That was beyond the line in my book. Did Anyone in APC ever call him to order? And now you expect people to go easy on Buhari? Dream on.
Politics › Re: Murray Bruce: A State That Can Survive Without Fed Allocation by bjdon: 11:37am On Jun 15, 2015
practically all the states in the country, are not 'Real' states in the true sense of the word as it applies in a Federal system. In the Federal system, a state is supposed to be a fully autonomous , self financing unit, just like the regions were in the first republic. What we call states today, are just Rate collecting entities.

Just as Greece is being giving conditions from the EU and IMF to receive it's bailout, so any state that wants a bailout from the FG, needs to be giving strict conditions, and that must include officials from the Federal ministry of Finance, being deployed to the state, to ensure funds are correctly spent. Also the FG should have the power to intervene and control the states budget.
Politics › Briefing Tips For PMB by bjdon(op): 2:00pm On Jun 13, 2015
Dear Mr President

Watching your quite embarrassing faux pass, where you refereed to Germany as West Germany, it became clear to me that you need a quick tutorial on changes that have occurred in the modern world.

Countries that have changed names: Quite a few countries have changed their names Sir. I know such information may not have made it's way to you on the ranch in Daura so here's a quick update.

Abyssinia, an ancient African kingdom, became Ethiopia.
Burma, a country in Asia, was renamed Myanmar in 1989 by the military government.
Ceylon became a republic in 1972 and changed its name to Sri Lanka, which means “splendid thing.”
Mesopotamia, the fertile plain between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, is now Iraq (as well as smaller parts of Syria, Turkey, and Iran).
The kingdom of Persia is now Iran.
Prussia no longer exists. After World War II, it was divided among Poland, Germany, and the USSR(Please Sir do no go referring to Merkel as President of Prussia, that would make Putin quite angry!!)
Rhodesia in Africa was named after Cecil Rhodes, an Englishman who encouraged European whites to settle in Africa. Today, Southern Rhodesia is Zimbabwe; Northern Rhodesia is Zambia.(So when your go to visit Zim, please do not refer to it as Rhodesia, as that would make Mugabe quite cross!!)
Siam is now Thailand.
Tanganyika and Zanzibar, in Africa, united to become one country, Tanzania.(So nobody is president of Zanzibar)
Zaire, the name of one of the largest countries in Africa, was changed in 1997 to the Democratic Republic of Congo(As opposed to peoples Republic of the Congo, they are 2 different countries O, Mr Presido, please don't mix them up, na small thing dey cause fight for that area)
Upper Volta is now Burkina Fasso
The Soviet Union does not exist anymore(Only in Putin's dreams)
And lastly......
East and West Germany reunited in 1990 to become once more Germany!!!

I hope this brief tutorial will help to bring you up to speed with current names of of some countries that have changed over the years. This should prevent you making anymore embarrassing gaffes, which have the potential to cause serious diplomatic incidents smiley

Politics › Re: Osun Crisis, Beyond My Control – Aregbesola by bjdon: 7:32am On Jun 13, 2015
Beremx:
This is the result of depending heavily on oil revenue from FG. Is it that Aregbesola cannot generate revenue from his state?

I no understand o!
This goes to the heart of the problem. In a federal system the states are supposed to be autonomous and fully self funding. Of course that's not the case in Nigeria. If we were a serious people we should not allow any state to exist that can not fund itself.

Politics › Re: Saraki Will Be Expelled From APC by bjdon: 3:48pm On Jun 10, 2015
I guess the OP is not aware of the adage keep your friends close and your enemies closer. If you expel Saraki he goes off to PDP with all his supporters. PDP becomes the majority party in the senate. You do realize just how important the Senate is? They can totally hamper PMB's agenda by blocking appointments and such like.

Politics › Re: Court Approves Suit Against Tinubu Over Murder Of Funsho Williams by bjdon: 9:42am On Jun 10, 2015
tonychristopher:
The major casualty today is not the players whose roles have charted a new course in our democracy. It is trust. Yes, trust is the casualty. Effectively, there's NO MORE TRUST in the APC. I hope you remember that where there's no trust, there's no relationship. It will be interesting after this to see Tinubu, Buhari and others backslap, hug, laugh heartily and hold arms without bitterness in their hearts. Honestly, it is not possible. No man loses investment worth billions to a fraudster yet remain good friends!

APC will try to heal their wounds and pull together again but if you have ever played politics, at whatever level before, you will know that the peace in APC will be that of the graveyard! Once egos are bruised, revenge is inevitable. Saraki knows this. Dogara knows this. Tinubu knows this.

Today, the PDP succeeded in exposing the underbelly of the state of the APC as regards it's preparedness for power. Close to 80 days after the APC was swept into power on their strange chant of "chanji" there's no sign that they even know what they are doing. Close to 80 days after winning an election, they could not pull through a horse trading deal for who gets what, when and how. They cannot articulate a list of Ministers to serve our fatherland. To cap it all, they went sheepishly to a meeting called at the ICC Abuja without so much as a rear guard watching this closely and giving them feedback. To think that Tinubu et al had to be scrambling for their cars to race back to NASS in shock beats any sane mind. These are supposed to be the people some Nigerians gave the mandate to govern them, yet had NO CLUE of a political coup unfolding under their noses. How can you trust these same people to protect Nigeria in troubled times God forbid! That Buhari travelled to Chad at the same time Osinbajo was in Sudan, when there were NO ELECTED leaders from the Senate or House of Representatives, no SGF nothing! Nigeria was effectively on auto pilot during this period? What!!! And at a time when Boko Haram was wrecking havoc??

Clearly, the APC is simply not ready to govern, perhaps due to its very nature of being a motley collection of the good, the bad and the ugly. Why won't i say so when it took the PDP 16 years to implode but took the APC only TWO WEEKS to press the self-destruct button! And you mock the PDP? Is this the "chanji" that PDP warned you about? If it is, then you are in trouble.

Next steps: are we going to see subterranean realignment of political interests from APC to PDP or to a new party or back to ACN or CPC for that matter? Keeping my fingers crossed and enjoying the political delicacy served up by politicians.
I warned at the time, when ACP were going round, recruiting dissatisfied PDP members, that it would not end well, but as usual shortsighted Nigerians did not listen. What did you guys expect? Let me try and make it really simple for all of you.

If you fill your party, with selfish, double crossing PDP members, then expect selfish double crossing behavior to be the order of the day. The ACP was so desperate for power that they resulted to accepting any and every defector regardless of their integrity. If Alams, Annenih or Bode Geroge had offered to defect they would have accepted them. Now those ex PDP gang have constituted themselves into a power block in the ACP. Anyone with an iota of common sense knows what will happen next. Come 2019 this block will move back to the PDP, leaving the ACP weakened. Between now and 2019 it will be constant battle and intrigues, expect the Buhari to be frustrated at every turn as the 'PDP block' will seek to bring down his govt in the eyes of Nigerians, in order for them to be looked on favorably in 2019. Moral of story, Never accept traitors into your midst. Once a traitor always a traitor.

I bet GEJ has consumed quite some bottles of ogogoro since yesterday and has a wide smile on this face!!

I think what is really telling here is the fact that Rabiu Kwankwanso seems to be a Saraki supporter. If that's the case then we can begin to see the shape of the divide in the ACP.
1: Tinubu Camp
2: Former PDP camp(Rabiu Kwankwanso , Saraki, Amechi...)
3: Buhari

How these camps work together/fight each other, over the next 4 years will determine the success/failure of the ACP govt
