Good evening house! Please i need your help. A friend sent me a used Asus laptop from the US through EMS and on the 16th day of September 2021 i got a call from a guy that works at the post office in ABA informing me that i should come and pick up my parcel and also that custom billed me #18,000, then few hours later that same day i got another call from the same Post office this time the caller said he's the manager for EMS then he went ahead to ask me if I had received a call earlier and i said yes and the he said what did the person tell me, i told him the first caller said that my parcel is in their post office that i should come and collect it and also that custom billed me #18,000. Then the EMS manager now told me to disregard the previous caller, that the #18,000 is their own courier company service money, that custom billed me #54,000 he then went further to say that when I come to the post office he will give me the phone to speak with custom agent from Lagos.

I smell foul Play. I haven't gone there yet because I have being terribly sick but i intend to go there this week and I need your advice on how best to go about this.

What and what should I look at for to make sure the said EMS manager is not trying to extort money from me??

What does a custom bill looks like?

Please i will be very grateful if you all can assist me in any little way you can??

I can barely afford to pay the #18,000 not to talk of an additional #54,000.

The true customs billing may have been the 18k that the fisrt guy informed you about. Perhaps shortly after contacting you, he now informed the other lady that called you and the lady must have been mad with him for not inflating the price. So in order to justify a new price regime which is false by the way, she added the clause that you should disregard the first rate as their own rate and that the actual custom charges is 54k.

The 18k sounds more like the real charge and the 54k afterthought looks like an attempt to defraud you. They will simply remove the 18k for the customs and keep the rest. The customs guy she said you will speak with on the phone will be an arrangee guy at the other end of the line posing as customs officer.

I think you should demand that she provides you with an official breakdown of the customs fees before you do anything. UPS always forward the breakdown of custom charges to my email and gives 10 days payment window into their specified account.

You can also order it on a place like AliExpress if you don't mind the 3 weeks waiting time for delivery. It costs like 6k to 10k depending on the size of shunt you want with it.

I ordered for exactly the same type but the seller packed it poorly and by the time it arrived, the screen was already broken and it is unusable. Only the shunt may be useful at a later date.

On a final note, please and please, don’t give your personal information to anyone who claims to be from a certain bank. Always go the bank!

It's quite simple to handle these guys. There are some red flags to look out for:

1. They are not well cultured in spoken English. Most times you will catch them with some odd local accent tainting their spoken English. They may also have grammatical errors.

2. They come with suggestions that make you get agitated or excited. Things like "your ATM card is bla bla bla", "there is a covid allowance to be paid into your account", your account is to be blocked and we need to prevent that", etc.

3. Before, they will need most of your account information, but nowadays, they have become sophisticated enough to have your account info (account number, name and ATM details) ahead. So all they need is an OTP that will be sent into your phone for them to complete the transaction over there at their own side. They disguise the request in several ways. One of such ways is that they tell you that a code to unblock your account will soon be forwarded to your number and you will need to call the code for 'em. Then they call you back to retrieve the code.

4. In some instances where they may not have your account number ahead but need it to continue with the process, they will request that you call out your account number. If you are on GTB (which they know) and you decide to call out an account number that starts with "200", they will stop you in your tracks and insist that you are calling out a wrong account number which is actually true. Most GTB accounts start with "00".

Do not honour any calls claiming to be from your bank. The best you can do is pick the call and waste the caller's time and credit. Use them to catch fún.

If your bank ever call you or send you an email to correct certain things, it will not be to ask for your details. At best, it is to ask you to call their customer care line or to visit one of their branches.

The only ways my money can be moved by these guys is if my phone is stolen which makes them to have access to my banking SIM card, account information, account balance and banking email. Any other format aside that na just waste of time.

Very common with FIRSTBANK, seems their staff give out information to scammers. Sometimes even tell you how much you have left, worse is they are lackadaisical towards solving issues involving them.

I concur with this. First bank has the highest cases of bank robberies countrywide for obvious reasons. They seem to have a lot of insiders that work with armed robbers.

I know a family member that works with an airline in Abuja. He was asked to go home for sometime during the lock down. Up till now, he has not been recalled. And he is not the only one affected.

Update: So here is how it works, Speedaf doesn't have offices in all States in Nigeria, they only have their offices in major states/cities for now.
So whenever you have an item that is to be delivered to a state without their presence, they'll send to the nearest post office to you. They told me they sent my parcel to my nearest post office yesterday and I should wait for the post office to contact me.

For now, I will partially agree with you. I have a valid functioning speedaf office in my place and I have had about three deliveries brought to the final address, though the address is about 45 minutes drive (another town) from their office. However I subsequently I contacted them that I will usually stop by to do self pick-up during my commute as I pass by their office.

Yesterday, I tracked one item and discovered it has "speedaf-nípost" as the latest tracking information.

Their office is still fully functional and the destination address for my parcel is still the same address they've always driven 45 minutes to do doorstep delivery to.

So what has changed? I'm not sure.

But you know what I think is this. NIPOST isn't so glad about speedaf's taking their mojo away from them and threatening to plunge them into irrelevance. So as NIPOST has legislative and government backing to accredit operations of logistic companies, they forced speedaf to collaborate with them with parcel deliveries, probably at an agreed percentage.

So speedaf China and speedaf Nigeria expedites the item shipping and delivery to the shores of Nigeria in line with their efficiency which trumps that of NIPOST. NIPOST then, in line with the agreed percentage of item, takes up their own share of delivery from there as the last mile carrier to deliver to the recipient, stealing the show in the process and giving the impression that they are efficient. Meanwhile their own delivery was local, taking over as sson as the parcel lands in Nigeria. Speedaf, in trying to play a smart one and not giving NIPOST all the shine they don't deserve decides to officialize the tracking update as "speedaf-nipost" so that people will know what's up and who does the job majorly.

About five days ago, a nipost official that I didn't even know has anything to do with speedaf called me about a tracking number that has been of contention as the parcel has failed to be delivered since July. She informed me that "she is at a place to pick up parcels and that the parcel I am looking for is also not there". But, for further explanations, she allowed me to communicate with the man in charge at the "office" she was picking parcels from and guess what? The man at the other end of the line turned out to be a familiar speedaf agent. This means that the office the nipost official was picking up parcels from was speedaf's office.

Now while this arrangement might not be a bad one as it helps speedaf deliver to addresses in remote areas where thy don't have offices, relying on the ubiquity of NIPOST offices to deliver to such places, it is dead sure that nipost inefficiency and greed will creep in at that "last mile carrier" point. Speedaf did not ask for payment for all the parcels brought to that remote address, but I am sure that that nipost official will demand money (as is the practice with nipost) by the time he delivers a "speedaf-nipost" parcel to me.

Make Buhari no rub his bad mojo on our amiable daughter o. Because anything Buhari touches gets destroyed.

I think they are beginning to cut corners. If they have done home delivery for you before, then they can't call you now to come pick this one up. Initially they handle both "R" - Registered and "O" - Ordinary as home delivery at no extra cost, then later they removed Ordinary from being captured and now if we are to go by your complaint, they are trying to totally evade home delivery by removing the registered parcels too. Even NIPOST as unserious as they are being a government owned outfit still do home delivery.

If this is true, then speedaf is really acting wrong. The best they could have done is ask you if you would prefer to come pick it up personally or if you would want the expected and official home delivery to be done at no extra cost.

Can guys here try to note some of speedaf Nigeria recent coner-cutting moves and try to lodge an official complaint with speedaf China, the official owner of the franchise?

@ Prestige2013, Ikotun Lagos is your own location. Let's keep vigilant to see if Speedaf in other locations also do similar thing or they still retain the initial officially expected practice. By that we can be absolutely sure that it is a practice that does not cut across all their locations which will further prove suspicions of some staff trying to be fraudulent. Even if this practice cuts across their subsidiaries, it still does not rule out the determination to inform speedat China that someone is trying to destroy business for 'em.

FRSC used to be so noble and respected by motorists even without them carrying arms. But ever since they got lumped with the Nigerian Police under the same ministry (a decision which was later reveresed after few months), they had begun to take bribes too. Those few months of working together with the NP was enough to destroy the long years of reputation the FRSC built. Today, the outfit is indistinguishable from the NPF in terms of bribery and corruption.

I fear Speedaf working with NIPOST is the beginning of the end of consumers' honeymoon with the former's efficiency.
