It's because there's no cabal anywhere benefitting from subsidy other than you and I. The only reason the government removed subsidy is because Nigeria is broke and instead of the stupid government to start from themselves by reducing the cost of governance they started from the masses by removing subsidy and enriching themselves so as to have more money to loot.

What is happening is that the government is using the regulators to control the price. It's whyost filling stations are not selling because the landing cost is above the 600 government wants them to sell. On the dollar part CBN directs banks the maximum prices they can bid from FMDQ that's why you see the rate on official market is 740 but on the parallel market it's 940.
I wonder how they are blind to this and saying FX is aligned.

Whenever people are doing shit jobs they will end up converting pounds to naira or dollar to naira as if it is naira someone staying in the UK will be spending. Monthly insurance alone is almost 200 pounds while rent is 750pounds.
Yet you are converting pounds to naira for someone working and staying in the UK. You are not serious at all, the same UK that I go on holiday every year is what you want to be telling me about.
It's not everybody that has lost all amount of human dignity like you that will go and become a cleaner or janitor in the UK because of so called pounds conversion that will give you nothing at the end of the month once you are done paying bills.
I have a friend that just committed suicide in the same UK, it's this kind of situation that pushed him to suicide.

Imagine someone asking for benefits of being a member of an economic alliance like BRICS.
If this question is coming from a genuine place of not knowing and willing to know it's fine but if it's a rhetorical question I will just laugh at your ignorance.
There's no country that needs to join BRICS at this time of utmost collapse of our economy than Nigeria, Nigeria's trade deficit is almost 90% because we export only crude oil and imports everything, we need to urgently diversify our dependence on USD and find better trade partners and BRICS will give us that opportunity.
Imagine the kind of trades Nigeria can do with Saudi Arabia alone or UAE while this alliance can offer an alternative currency of trade other than USD which will help our economy a lot.
But someone on nairaland is asking for the benefit of BRICS

Any employer that employed someone who came through sponsorship is liable to pay heavy fine and most employer will not want to risk that.
The only alternative is to find a non registered work like hourly cleaning or janitorial services that will not arouse the regulators check .
Now imagine someone who was probably a banker in Nigeria and paid 10000 pounds to immigrate going to the UK and becoming a cleaner.
Do you wish your enemy that kind of life hence it's no surprise they won't do that kind of job you are proposing.

It is with shocking news today that I read Argentina, Ethiopia,Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia have all been invited to join BRICS while Nigeria should the so called giant of Africa has been ignored. Now I don't know is Nigeria indeed applied to join and was ignored or we didn't apply to join at all.
Whatever is the case between both situation is a very sad one indeed. How do we explain Ethiopia joining BRICS and Nigeria being ignored? Its a big blow to those managing our foreign policies and Tinubu administristion .
This would have been an opportunity to diversify our reliance on USD and reset our trade partners to offset our global trade deficits with better trading partners but of course as with all things in Nigeria lately it's always a bad omen.
I'm just tired of hoping this country will get better one day but the trend is not looking good at all.

If you get into the UK via the sponsorship route which is the case here, you cannot do any other job apart from the non existent job that sponsored you into the UK.

I will respond as a public finance guru but if you like keep following the political herd mentality na you sabi.
Firstly,the narrative that subsidy only benefits some few rich people is a myth the government is spinning to make you buy into her policy of subsidy removal because there's no few cabal anywhere that's benefitting from subsidy other than the middle class and the poor like you and i. That's why the government has not been able to provide just one name of this mirage cabal since time immemorial.Nnpc herself came out and said they have not paid any subsidy money to anybody since 2015 or so when buhari became president. What has been happening since then is that nnpc is the sole importer of petrol in Nigeria and they embarked on this crude oil for refined products swap deal that once petrol is imported through crude swap it would be distributed to petrol marketers and that kept the fuel price at a controlled price, but that has an implication on the government's revenue because if the products being swapped for petrol were sold it will result into more revenue for the government to spend. The national and subnational government needs more money to spend which is why they all backed subsidy removal so that more revenue from crude oil sales will come in and they can share.
Now, government generating more revenue anywhere in the world is not a bad thing but in Nigeria it is. The moment subsidy was removed more money goes into the government purse but you as an average Nigerian pays a whole lot more while government everywhere legislooters, executheives, states, LGAs will have their pockets filled and will loot a whole lot more.
So you see why the subsidy removal is a loss for you and a plus to the government coffers!
Secondly, on the floating of the naira. I don't know what consultations Tinubu made that is being appraised by zombies like you. There's no economy in the world except the US that floats her currency to be driven by market forces of demand and supply. The US can afford to do that for obvious reasons because it's the currency of the world and all they will simply do is to reduce the volume or increase the volume to dictate the value of the USD, but a certain Tinubu who heads a country that produces nothing but imports everything decided to float the naira despite the obvious trade deficit. How on earth do you think the value will not be dwindling daily when it's obvious the demand far outweigh the supply.I for one and so are many others have been mopping up any dollar available since time immemorial because the naira is right now as useless as a tissue paper.
These two issues are what's responsible for the present state of the economy and sorry for you there's no better tomorrow anywhere if these policies are not reversed urgently. Fuel price will continue to rise while naira will be doing bonanza. You people just keep believing in false hope that it will get better when the fundamentals already shows it will be getting worse.
I thought Tinubu was smart before he became president but right now I think Buhari's IQ is even far better than his own in terms of how he's managing the economy.

They have instead allocated 70bn to national assembly members while Tinubu is flying over 10 presidential fleets, many senators and his would be ministers are earning jumbo retirement packages as pensions etc.
It seems you like being a slave and wants other sane Nigerians to join you in being enslaved.
Have you asked yourself how you expect the masses to cope with the inflation going up by the day. Keep supporting your oppressors. They should return the subsidy if they don't know what to do.

Firstly , this is the second time the naira has been allowed to float freely .

The first time was under IBB after the disaster known as Buhari had wrecked the economy .

Buhari hid under protectionism to hide the dwindling FX reserves which greeted his treason on our polity.

A simple check on FX reserves from CBN archives will show you a significant dip in FX holdings between December 1983 to January 1984.

As Buhari carried out his coup on our polity on behest of the then struggling Thatcher govt that was battling a recession, huge amounts of money was moved by Buhari to pay our creditors in London . This was a debt that was hanging from the senseless civil war which you guys instigated.

Shagari had insisted on debt rescheduling due to a slump in oil price and huge theft by the Obasanjo govt - notably, the missing oil money scandal by the Buhari headed NNPC.

Britain at this time was dead broke and was facing waves of coal and rail workers strike. This was when Baron Victor Rothschild as adviser to the Thatcher govt and head of MI6 instigated another coup in Nigeria. The first being your senseless coup of Jan 15, 1966 that turned Nigeria from zero debt to owing Jewish Banksters in London which Rothschild was a major creditor.

IBB was forced to float the naira in other to reopen the economy. The naira was fixed at #4 to a $1 and after its first trade closed at about #12. That's a whooping 300% devaluation and nothing compared to the current drop we are witnessing

By the time Abacha took over it was at above #20 to a dollar. Abacha will borrow some buharimonics for political reasons only and despite this, the naira was forced to crash to about #40 to a dollar on Obasanjo being sworn in. So between 1983 to 1999, the naira devalued by over 1000% despite all artificial attempts to prop it up through fixed pricing.

You must also understand that the naira is one of very few currencies that has never been traded internationally, thereby making it a non convertible currency outside it's soverign borders. You can only convert naira at Nigeria's land borders. Outside this, you will not see anyone willing to touch it.

You argument is based on continuing the failed system that only promotes a parallel market which insider traders are the only beneficiaries.

When I see comments like this that get likes I just know that most Nigerians are plain ignorant about the economy and how it works. What's making the exchange rate worse is not some money kept somewhere it's simply that there's no supply meanwhile demand is outrageous.
As at yesterday almost all Nigerian banks have billions of dollars of backlogs of matured fx obligations yet to be settled dating back to as far back as 2016.
Until all that backlog is cleared there's no hope for the naira in a floating regime. Even when the backlog is cleared there still won't be hope cos everyone has lost hope in naira and dollar supply will still not be adequate .

For the first time in my life, I am beginning to really regret staying back in this country due to my huge emoluments instead if migrating to Canada in 2020.
This government is going the route buhari went and Nigerians are simply tolerating him. He's showing signs of being worse thab buhari and fools are leading me on. Incase you don't know dollars is now over 800 even in the official window, to clear a Corolla now you need over 2.5m not to talk of benz. The middle class has been effectively been taken out and made poor in this Tinubu economy and the response is to borrow $800m to be shared to party supporters in the name of palliatives!!!
What are the labour organizations and civil society doing? By now we should be out protesting but the usual naija he go better is the response as always.

If Tinubu did not start this why can he not end it? His government is the one that came and removed all sorts of subsidies on petrol and education then he should lead by example to reduce cost of governance. Why can't he remove all this wastage with the speed he used to remove subsidy.
It's like the bondage they put you is very comfortable for you and tribal sentiments is what puts food on your table.
I'm just fed up for this country and it's not because of the leaders alone but because of morons like you that supports everything the government does for tribal reasons like zombies.
