Since there is constant light here, I never bothered putting a generator line. After a heavy rain, I suspected our light may go off once in a while for few hours or for maintenance.
With this fear, on Friday, I called the electrician who wired the house and sent him 5k to come handle the gen line.
This guy is so unreliable. He lies too much about being engaged. After you pay him, he won't come until you cry and beg.
On that Friday, he didn't come. On Saturday, he didn't come. On Sunday, he didn't. I got angry and called him and he said, "Sun this, rain that, I can't climb ceiling at this time this, I can't climb ceiling at this time that."
On Monday, being today, he came to fix the light when Agip was doing maintenance on their gas turbine since it what we use.
I quickly rushed and got fuel so he could test his connection with the generator.
At last, everything worked and I was using my generator during this few hours of maintenance and testing.
He left and few hours later, the main light came and I turned off my gen and switched on the turbine line, but there was no light. I tried and tried, yet nothing.
So, I called him at 3 PM and he said he will come when he is free. At 6 PM, he came when there was light and the moment he started using his tester to check if there was current, they took the light without us knowing. I guess the maintenance wasn't over yet.
"There is no current," he said. "No, when I checked it before calling you, there was current," I countered.
He started complaining that his children must've spoiled his tester and was planning on how he will beat them when he gets back. "Abeg, help me with your tester," he request and you dashed into the room and got mine for him. He tested it, yet no current.
I looked at our neighbor's compound and there was no light there, so I called his attention to it and that was when we realized they've taken the light.
He stepped down and said he will come back when they bring the light. He left, I locked the gate, and I switched on my gen. At 8 PM, they brought the light and I turned off my gen to avoid looking weird because neighbors may think, "Why is this compound using generator when there is free light."
I called my electrician, but he said he can't come and I should endure till tomorrow. While I was on phone with him, he was talking and preaching for me to wait till tomorrow and I cut the call on him.
As I type this, I'm pissed. Everybody in this entire town is enjoying light this evening except me. I can't even switch on the gen again to avoid looking like a millionaire who is bigger than free light.
In summary, electricians are as wicked as tailors. They don't take their work seriously until you get angry.
Now, I'm in my room snapping pictures of other people's light through my window.

budzwizer: A teenage Instagram model plunged to her death from the 17th floor of a popular tower in Dubai while she was taking a selfie, police said.
The girl, identified as 16-year-old Hannah M., was trying to take a selfie with the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, in the background.
Police said the teenager was standing on a chair at the edge of the balcony of an apartment on the 17th floor, when she lost her balance and tumbled over the guardrail.
The teen was an aspiring model of mixed Lebanese and Afghani heritage, and she had a large Instagram following, according to local media.
“She was standing on a chair in the balcony and trying to take a selfie when she lost control and fell to her death,” Colonel Al Qasim, director of Security Media in Dubai Police, said.
According to police, Hannah was holding her mobile phone and was wearing high heels when she plunged from the 17th-floor balcony.
“She was standing on a chair at the edge of the balcony. While she fell out of the balcony, the mobile phone with which she was taking the selfie fell inside,” Col Al Qasim said.
One resident said he heard the 16-year-old girl screaming as she fell, followed by “a loud cracking sound” as the young model impacted on the ground.
“The girl landed at the base of the tower. She was killed instantly,” Col Al Qasim added.
A resident at the tower told Gulf News she was on her balcony when she noticed the pretty teen had fallen over the railing.
“I could tell she was still alive and was very scared as she was falling,” the resident, who did not wish to be named, said.
“There was a lot of blood when she hit the ground.”
Dubai-based social media influencers have spoken out about the pressure that other social media users face to getting the “perfect selfie.”
“The youth think it is fine to do risky stunts to take the perfect shot,” said Naomi D’Souza, another Instagram influencer who lives in the tower on Shaikh Zayed Road.
She said she was surprised that someone could fall from a building balcony as they were “solid.”
"I was going out the back of the building and saw the body, which was covered," D'Souza added. "Initially, I didn't know the victim was a 16-year-old girl."
