coputa:One pained and envious vassal of yore spotted. Pele. ![]() Funny thing is you won't say where you come from me. So that we can see how better than Dubai it is. Not that it matters anyway. It has left nothing of note in history or present, good or bad. |
So what is new here? The thing wey Eve don confirm right from the beginning? |
slowice: ![]() The corrupt money advisers here on Nairaland if given half a chance will loot more than any sitting politician. That is the fact. They even already know how to hide it and not say pim better than sitting veteran looters. That tells you the hopeless state of corruption. |
TOPMAN4LIFE:Benin has never needed outsiders to validate importance of Oba to us. But history of Benin is the best documented in Nigeria, having had earliest contact with Europeans and Christianity. So, it's not obscure. As far Benin is concerned, Izoduwa or your Oduduwa was a Benin prince. Benin and Igalla history clearly say so. So either way, it's Izoduwa that descends from Benin. By the way, many various clans existed in SW before Izoduwa just about 1000 years ago. It's flawed to say one Lamurudu son flew or teleported from Arabia, Yemen or wherever. Even more ridiculous to climb from heaven with chain. Oba Akinruntan of Ugbo also clarifies that he owns Ife as the Aboriginal Ife ruler. That Oduduwa the foreigner drove them from Ife. You guys mistake royal connections with entire tribes. We all know that Awo lifted Ooni because other Yoruba would find it easier to accept the juju priest as a leader instead of the historical leader, Oyo that people still had grudges against for its domination of them for centuries. That Oba of Benin does not rely on any bent politician to be selected alone shows its uniqueness. If Oranmiyan, a Benin descendant prince, first became king in Benin, then Oyo and lastly in Ife, if he's head of Izoduwa dynasty, then clearly, his true place of origin and first crown have superiority. And one not selected by one corrupt, election rigging governor too. Chai!! . |
respect80:It is technically incest because under the law, Western law, that we now practice, the lady and her hubby's brothers are also sibling (siblings-in-law). It's not only biological relatives. In some countries and jurisdictions, it's actually a jailable offence to do what the woman and brother-in-law did. E.g. Brazil and some US states like Michigan. |
TOPMAN4LIFE: ![]() You need to understand that as a crown prince, Oba of Benin would have already known most of the leaders of Nigeria today. Either doing something for Nigeria at the UN or as an ambassador to countries. So, Oba does not see any of these 9ja politicians as a big deal. Unlike a king that one governor suddenly picked. He would be pinching himself when invited to Abuja. Remember the topic here is that governors pick Yoruba kings. The revelation is not new but a great disservice to tradition when confirmed by a king this way. As a crown prince, the father of current Oba of Benin ran the govt cabinet office of Gen Yakubu Gowon as Perm Sec. He also represented Nigeria to train officials of Papua New Guinea for their independence from Australia in 1975. You seem to forget that fall of Benin made creating what became Nigeria possible. Since colonial times, Benin has been a reluctant participant in the Nigerian experiment. An experiment that has failed woefully so far. Yet, if a Benin prince is required to do any job for the people abroad or govt, he would put in his best efforts. Even if only for his family name. Oba of Benin finds it far more important to attend to matters affecting citizens locally. Faaji and gallivanting has never been Oba of Benin's attribute. Since time immemorial. You think Oba doesn't know the houses of prominent people? But he would not go. Unless out of courtesy when as a guest of Alake of Ake in Abeokuta, he was prevailed on to follow him to visit Obasanjo for OBJ's birthday. Whatever corrupt Nigerian politicians believe is irrelevant to Benin. The only Yoruba Kingdom Benin has ever truly respected for gallantry in war is Oyo. Warriors respect fellow warriors. Awo's govt elevation of Ooni, the priest at Ife, above Alaafin, is not our matter. By the way, politicians always like pliant people, be they king or any regular sycophant. But my simple take is that, these obas picked under the cover of darkness at night should be careful not to totally ruin the traditional institution. They should be very wary of politicians. Politicians only know of self-interest. They can use and rubbish anyone no matter how highly placed. |
Toosure70:With our poor electricity supply? By the time the SME entrepreneur spends heavily on buying diesel, cost of production will make imported stuff cheaper. First, produce reliable power, refine oil locally and give tax incentives to small business people. Then wait and see what people will do. |
Igbo people nor too get time like that o. If you have good business that will bring income or you can help his business grow, you be his friend already. Their matter nor dey complex at all. Just live and let's live. |
coputa:Well, Benin has survived over 2000 years a growing strong. With proof across museums worldwide. Has your place turned into Dubai or Singapore yet? Is minimum wage in your place now $700 dollars a month? This fuel subsidy has now impact in your Dubai-like hometown? How about removing the log in own eye first? You are free to update to Hindu culture in your tribe if you like. Leave others with their own. |
coputa:Such as those dead bodies in Okija forest, Boko Haram in the North, bodies that littered some bush in Osun, daylight murdering of Dr Akunyili, Ipob/ESN activities, herdsmen killing all over the place, kidnappings, baby factories, skull mining industry in Ogun abi which modernity? Don't let your tribalism blind you to begin throw stones in a glass house. Tell us where you come from and let's compare. There is enough poo across 9ja, so no need to form. |
Sermwell:That is why an Oba trained from birth knows his job and responsibilities. Because he understudied his father for decades. But when a governor suddenly make you Oba overnight, you might not be too prepared for the role. Politicians can dethrone, but who will replace the Oba? Only Oba's first son can. A politician/governor can try flex muscle but must wait for the consequence from the people. Even when the British did in 1897, they could not replace him. His first son only took over in 1914 after his demise in Calabar exile. If na some place, some envious prince would have connived with the British to take the throne. ![]() |
drlaykay:OK. But in many places such as most of Edo and a small part of Ondo, the king's firstborn son is crown prince from birth. Nothing any kingmaker or governor can do about. Only death can change that. Therefore, such "kings in waiting from birth" have no reason be to beholden to any politician. For example, Benin has no kingmakers but king crowners. The Governor only rubberstamps the coronation by presenting staff of office. After that, you will never see the Oba ever touch so called staff of office. Na just symbol from constitution. |
TOPMAN4LIFE:Look, Benin monarchy preceded Nigeria and will also outlive it. Do you think Benin monarchy relies on corrupt Nigerian politics for relevance? The voters population strength mathematics of 9ja politicians? Did you observe that Oba of Benin doesn't even attend many of these jamborees Nigerian kings do in Abuja now and then? ![]() When Benin Monarchy became the first country to recognise Brazilian independence from Portugal in 1823, before USA and Argentina, it didn't need any other tribe to do the right thing. Today, both Argentina and USA like to claim first position but Brazilian govt are emphatic that Benin did first. |
justlovesfarmin:Marrying two sisters is not actually a taboo in many cultures. Some tribes just avoid it. If you are a Christian, Jacob married Rachel and Leah, daughters of Laban. Jacob and Laban were even first cousins. If you are a Muslim, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi married daughter of his uncle, late Emir Ado Bayero, whose sons are current Emir of Kano and Emir of Bichi. Muslims regularly marry their first cousins. Oba Ewuare I Ogidigan who reigned from 1440 to 1473 also married two sisters, albeit under a different circumstance. In Benin, traditional practices don't just happen for nothing, there is history behind it. In parts of Malawi, if you marry a woman and you turn out to be a good husband, your in-laws may reward you with a sister or cousin of your wife as a second wife. So I have given you good examples of various acceptable practices in history and the present . So if you want to criticise Benin monarchy, find another flimsy excuse. |
Good Seun, Mynd, mods, FP please |
Emaprince:How can they condemn what they can relate to? ![]() We men are still too naïve. Men believe their lovely wife is way above cheating because she is religious and all that. Look many are being knacked by mechanic, security guard, family driver, etc. In 9ja, only a very tiny percentage of women marry a man they love. It's mostly about not becoming evening newspaper, marrying a guy who is ready, a guy who can provide economically, how to escape poverty, pressure from parents to marry, etc. Love ain't got nothing to do with it. Since most are not in love with their hubby, their heart is vacant. Fear of being caught cheating is the only restraining factor for women. If they can cover their tracks well, which they often do far better than men, nothing stops most of them. There are more men in love with their wives than the reverse. After all the guy sought her out from among many other women and proposed. Even if you discount for mere infatuation or beauty of the woman as motivating factor, more men will still have proposed out of true feelings. Whereas, over 95% of our women cannot seek out the man they truly want to marry. |
autonomous22:You just dey know? Look, them plenty everywhere. When international research showed that 9ja women are the most unfaithful, I think Philippines women trailing behind , some people were arguing it. Lots of women, some as old as 60 are at it. Facts we know real life. Some will say including your sisters. Well, they are Nigerians and if it's common in 9ja, I don't follow them around to know either way. After all, all those other 9ja women at it are people's daughters, sisters, wives and even mothers. |
advanceDNA:Dude, just learn one lesson. From the responses here, if a man provided for 20 years and suddenly cannot anymore or a man cannot meet up his responsibilities for whatever reason, most women nowadays see nothing wrong with sleeping around to make money. The idiot guy should do paternity test on his kids. They might not even be his. As a guy man, if the kids are his, he should send the woman back to her parents and allow the sugar daddy cater for the family. It's his gain. If he kills the sugar daddy he will go to prison and the whoring wife will now freely move to another husband. Then he will be the loser. Some guys nor get sense o. |
Girlee:My dear, if it was possible, I would have advised you to try applying to a Northern University like Sokoto Dan Fodio for nursing. Sokoto is quite safe mostly. Cut-off marks are lower. Also consider Radiography if they won't give you nursing. It's in demand and less hard work than nursing. You can also try midwifery route. So you have options. Explore your extended family. An uncle, cousin or aunt somewhere may be willing to support. No need to be shy about seeking genuine help. Many of us have supported extended family members through education over the years. |
Girlee:Young woman, at 18, you have not even started life yet really. I know you may feel otherwise but there is nothing you still cannot do. From getting your degree to becoming minister or even president. Don't run away. You are too intelligent to do that. Your dad may not be as financially buoyant as you may think. Be patient and keep being a good daughter to your family and society. Help will surely locate you. |
Evolutionlove:Dude, some people may genuinely want to help. You can advise the young woman on how not to fall prey. We need organised charitable groups on whose doors people like the OP can knock and seek help. She could easily be a daughter to many Nairalanders. Evolutionlove, I want to believe that you have enough humanity in you to assist people like this young woman in real life. While some do nefarious things out of greed, a lot of young women go into oloshoism for simple reasons of genuine need or lack. |
yungzed360:Dude, you left out some vital information. How old are both of you? To see if you can afford to still waste a bit of time. She might be around 22 years old or thereabout. What do you both do? What is her socio-economic background? Look, she probably likes you but she's still sampling around. Relationship is now strictly business or career for some babes. Love ain't got nothing to do with it. Some babes want a guy to take them out of poverty or seek something specific that you may not be able to fully offer her. You are probably nice but you can't give her "something" she truly desires. It's a trade off. If for example she desires a rich guy and finds one who is a tad abusive but meets her material needs, she might stick to him and finally dump you. For now she always returns to you because she hasn't found that other person. Not to lose out on both ends. Unless there is something extraordinary about the babe, it might be better to move on. Painful, I know. |
EriMma1:But he can also get a woman who is productive as in working and contributing economically. Gone are those days when men only provided financially. If your wife cannot contribute economically, what if the unexpected happens to the man. 35 is a very good age to marry. He said he has a house and a car already. He needs to look at his income, side income, contribution of prospective wife, etc. They can marry and save together for a year and then think about having kids, plan how many, etc. @ dondodo If possible find a half-way decent lady to marry. Plan family well. No too many kids. Good luck! |

jmoore:Let the man be speaking English wey he nor sabi. The way crime rate will go up, only God will save his children. What are the concrete palliatives for the poor, elderly and infirm? |
inoki247:They are the only Nigerians with Oxygen and ambulance on standby. Because if you nor strong, Arsenal go just kpai you. |
Donedeal1:Nobody can doubt Tinubu's ability even if we didn't like 8 years of APC that brought so much suffering. If Tinubu began his presidency 8 years ago, he would have performed like 300% better than Buhari did. The worry some us have is that he might not have the same vigour and energy he had years ago to face the many problems of 9ja today. But 9ja has its peculiarities. He had to bide his time, help the North rule first to get a sniff. We must now wait and hope he hasn't lost his Midas touch. |
aidameoryou:It may be that your mum never loved your dad but condition made her to marry him. She doesn't feel fulfilled in the marriage and there is really nothing your dad can do about it. She's pouring all the frustration on him. A major silent killer of men is marital maltreatment but nobody discusses it. A man is expected to be strong and be in control. If you are harsh you are a wife abuser and if you are a gentlemen trained to overlook women's shenanigans, you are a simp. A man really can't win. I hope you are learning from your dad's experience. It's very difficult for most men to admit that own mother is far from the type of woman they pray to marry. Because mother is supposed to be "iya ni waura". What her hubby goes through doesn't matter. |
Harrynight:Here is an eye witness account of QEII visit to Benin and meeting Oba in 1956 in the link below. That attire Oba Akenzua II wore in the pic was taken from Benin in 1897 war but returned in 1914. Remember that QEII was the Head of State of Nigeria and other Commonwealth countries as of 1956. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn5c_wd9cVc |
pharmaking:Great. Any update? |
PHZADDY1:Na that same gang Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria dey. South Africa dey hin own very funny category too, ![]() |
The guy's interview had no impact really except bad PR. UK authorities already knew. Worry more about what are revealed behind the scenes, not what the diarrhoea mouth guy said openly. |
