jmaine: The School is not baulking either and they are backed by the Law . .I don't see the FG succeeding in their re branding attempt . . .Unilag is not ready to relinquish her money spinning brand name called UNILAG VENTURESIf they do that hmmm. . . . . their budget would be in danger oooh. Especially those non essential budget items that dem Profs and Governing council members dey use take chop. I doubt if they would oppose. ACN is smart and their silence is wise. Although Aregbeshola has come out in support of the move. I personally dont like the name change but I feel like the uproar is uncalled for. |
emmatok: You are very mischievous, the renaming in OAU,ABU, AND UNIZIK also brought controversy and protest. You watchers and waiters have been watching and waiting since Adam and Eve. The best answer I would give to you is this very brilliant analogy below by edicolove. edicolove: Again, the joke is on ya'll. You call someone daft, yet he keeps outwitting you and coming out tops everytime. He has dispelled every discent and keeps forging on and you still think you are smarter. The smart MAU students will go home, stay for six montha and come back and answer the name. |
As if Harvard, Yale and Columbia are Government Universities> Fill yourself with knowledge before posting. Google is free. |
AWD: The poster has been shallow enuf to think every one in ex-UNILAG is yoruba. The poster did not mention the word "Yoruba"in his post. Reread. The poster made the inference after realising that majority of the critics were resident in a particular section of the country. The poster used a reference made by a popular Lagos based civil rights lawyer to draw his conclusions. Reference below. Bamidele Aturu: “The renaming itself is not the problem it is was a populist gesture. This must not been seen as a way to garner the sympathy of the people of the South West. |
nuclearboy: At times I just wonder whether the president advertised for and employed his greatest enemies as advisers! What you have pointed out is the crux of the matter - UNILAG is a "brand" which may mean nothing to GEJ & co but which all alumni see almost as their Glory! We are too short sighted in this country. 200 years from now, when all those degrees are worthless, the University will still be here. Many of these things are done for posterity. There are some people we would never have known anything about if not for the honor of recognizing their achievements with something iconic. We have become too selfish in this country. If not for Murtala Mohammed Airport, many folks would never have known nothing about Murtala. |
Beaf: When they come back, it will still be MAU. Foolish students.Instead of them to go and read their books! Dem dey form swagger!! |
jason123: No, you started a topic saying "So they never really loved MKO". Then, you went ahead to say South-westerners. Please, who are the majority group in the SW if not for Yorubas? When we say Core-North, we all know we are referring to the Hausa/Kanuri/Fulani. Please, I am sure you know contextual messages are. People are not stu.pid, you know?Who are "they"?? They refers to the South West. Prof Itse Sagay is a Delta citizen resident in the South West. I refer to him as a South Westerner. He is against the name change. Last Nite I argued with Anambra indigene living in Lagos and she is against the name change. She is an Anambrian, but a south westerner by geography. Bamidele Aturu wrote: “The renaming itself is not the problem it is was a populist gesture. This must not been seen as a way to garner the sympathy of the people of the South West".It is from here I got my topic. I really don't know why you are trying to tribalise this thing. |
jason123: Mister, only daft people repeat the same thing. If you can show me anywhere I used the word Yoruba in my post, then you can fault me. I wrote South Westerners and in my humble opinion that represents geographical residents of the South Western Region. Be they Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba et al. In the crowd of UNILAG students, there are different tribes and ethnicities. I give more credence to geographical descriptions than ethnic or tribal affiliations. My take is ethnicity and tribe should be described in historical and cultural contexts. The article below motivated my post. Sagay, others differ over renaming of UNILAG in honour of Abiola |
jason123: https://www.nairaland.com/849594/why-we-rate-ibo-secondI've long responsed to Gbawe on another thread where he raised this same thing. And because I wouldn't want to derail this thread with a totally unrelated topic, I will place my response in the linked thread. |
Gbawe: Papabrowne wrote:Gbawe I'VE long responded to this thread on another article where you referenced this thread. You probably didn't see! So I'm reposting what I replied you then as it still holds water now. In as much as I would have loved to engage you intensely on this, I really and sincerely do not have the time. Using words like "deluded fool" wouldn't draw me in. Time is so much of the essence, gat too much work to do. But I would be nice and use a spare five minutes and respond for the sake of posterity!!https://www.nairaland.com/906312/they-finally-renovating-airports/1#10613399 |
alj harem: I am really waiting for PapabrownE to give his excuse this time around.I am getting scared already!! Nigerians have lost it. Scary!! I'll ask 4 questions. 1)Before Western Avenue Surulere was changed to Funsho Williams Avenue, were the road users consulted? 2)Who did Fashola consult with before renaming Igbosere high court after Idowu Taylor? 3)Will you consult and seek your nanny's permission if you choose to change your child's name? For crying out loud, it's your child and your pay the nanny. 4)If Fashola renamed LASU after GANI FAWEHINMI, would we have this outrage? What are you guys talking about. The Governing body of UNILAG has no business with whatever name change happens to the university. They govern based on the articles passed down to them by the Feds. The Feds have issued a new article which changes the name from UNILAG to MAU. The governing body henceforth has to govern based on this new article. You guys are just irrationally emotional and have desecrated the dignity of Abiola. This is someone's comment on facebook and it expresses how much the people of Nigeria(Protesting Lagosians especially) have lost their bearing. "I think the Nigerian students have lost it. We hear of corruption daily in billions. No student carried placards to say enough its enough. Now someone try's to honour a true philanthropist, know as the president we never had and now we hear students are carrying placards. Silly". |
alj harem: Embarrassed ? I am super proud of them.He who pays the piper dictates the tune. Since when did UNILAG authorities start having such powers? The University is funded by the FG remember? eGuerrilla: @PapaBrowne, in that case, quit crying more than those mired in regionalism, it does not sit well with your Nationalist outlookI hear. It's not my fault. I just only feel bad for the man(MKO) joor! |
alj harem: I am enjoying this thread, love the way Papabrown has exposed himself just like Beaf to be a bigot. alj harem: I am enjoying this thread, love the way Papabrown has exposed himself just like Beaf to be a bigot. How am I a Bigot na?? Alhaji? Mai haka? Are you not embarrassed at the rejection? If MKO was your friend or relative won't you cringe?? |
eGuerrilla: You are being too smart by half, arguing he was a National leader on the one hand while picking a bone of contention with the voices of opposition (reason) from a particular region on the other. Since your line of reasoning suggests it is only people of South Western Extraction who take umbrage at the immortalization of a National icon, why loose sleep over such inconsequential distractions? No sleep lost. If you read, I personally don't like the name change. However, the outrage is a slap on the face of an Icon. Imagine South African blacks protesting the naming of a University after Mandela. There are not many people that sacrificed for democracy the way MKO did. The sad part is nobody has yet given a concrete reason why the university should NOT be named after MKO. Is there any other Iconic piece in Lagos that should have been named after him. Somebody said National Stadium. My thoughts? What an Insult. That should be given to someone like Yekini or Kanu or the like. Someone said National Theather. Leave that for Soyinka. For all I care, for someone in the calibre of Abiola, the name Lagos should be changed to MKO. It has been recorded in the annals of History that on the day 29 May 2012, a man whose freedom and life was taken from him because he stood to protect the dignity of his people has been rejected not by his neighbours, but the very household in which he gave his all for. |
CyberG: I hope this useless move which is only purely political is turned down and litigated in court. I think MKO deserves a real big time immortalization for his sacrifice but not UNILAG. Lagos is such a brand name that people who have never even been to Africa or Lagos have heard good thing about it. They will always ask if you are from Lagos soon as they know you are Nigerian. UNILAG is one of the icons and brands recognized in foreign countries and what is the need to destroy the 50 year reputation by wiping out the brand?? I hope Jonseathan is thoroughly embarrassed in court and this name change is resisted now And in the future. If the fool wants to do anything for Nigeria, let him build something first and then rename it rather than reap where he did not sow! What U've written is called double speak. You said Lagos is such a great brand name. Fine. You said MKO deserves a big time honour. Fine. Now, isn't it cool to associate such a hero as MKO with such a great brand like Lagos. You didn't make any noise when that polytechnic in Ogun was named after MKO. In your opinion that was OK. But here you think UNILAG is too big for him. It's really sad how a man who spent years in jail and was eventually killed for our democracy would be disdained in such a manner over the naming of a University. If Murtala Mohammed who barely did anything for Nigeria was named after our Major International Airport, why would any one reject MKO for just a University. Its sad and I'm amazed at the fact that the rejection is coming from the state in which he lived almost all his life. Very sad rejection. |
eGuerrilla: Whether you love him unconditionally as some do or feel exercised by the various roles he played during his life, it can only be for reasons of expediency that you tag Abiola, the one-time chairman of NPN (forerunner of PDP) and acclaimed winner of the freest elections held in Nigeria to date, as some kind of regional leader.No. He wasn't a regional leader in the same way Lagos is not a regional University. He was a national leader and I recognize that squarely in the same way I recognize the fact that Lagos is a Federal University. Now, it is mainly people of South Western Extraction that have taken it upon themselves to criticize the act without the slightest form of regard for MKO. This is outright rejection of someone who we are all supposed to uphold as a hero of democracy. Seriously, MKO died in vain and has now been rejected by those that are supposed to have held him dearly. |
Most South Westerners, young and old likewise are criticizing the renaming of UNILAG. I personally don't like the change in name. First because MAU just doesn't sound right. Secondly, I really don't know why but it just isn't cool. However, I'm surprised at the reaction of South Westerners especially because they made everyone believe MKO was a hero. Imagine if University of Nigeria Nnsukka were renamed after OJUKWU, I don't think it would generate all the negativity. |
PhysicsQED: I don't think I should respond to this thread again because I don't think anything will be gained from it. I only came here to comment on what I see as some misconceptions, although others might disagree. Later.Your comments are always very educative. Keep it up, even if just for posterity!! For decades these threads would still exist and many others would learn from your knowledge! |
aletheia: Gbawe. . .seriously, you are losing it. Persecution complex? On an anonymous online forum? Really? Like I said, you take yourself entirely too serious. I assure you, no-one on this forum takes you as serious as you think they do. It begins and ends on NL. It seems you are about to burst into tears. What a crybaby you are. You can't take the heat? Get out of the kitchen then.Ol boy! See punches!! !!How does someone whose reputation starts and ends in Nairaland survive after these kinds of jabs!! Alethia, abeg Take it easy on the cry baby!! Gbawe takes himself too seriously and I really do wonder why he thinks anyone has the time to follow his long posts which usually have more to do with literature than politics. I read the first line and move on to the next post. . . Anytime I remember that this guy Gbawe would have to remain this negative for the next 5 years, I feel really sorry for him. Mr Gbawe, it must be hard being you. Really don't envy you placer right now, especially after these punches from Alethia!! |
shymmex: Some idiotic posters are even claiming that ibini empire extended to dahomey, funny clowns.. The bini empire stopped where it's today.. Bini NEVER in their history conquered the IJEBUS - so, how the phuck did they get to Dahomey then?? Did they fly over our heads like the ogisio (or whatever they are called)? Binin history is overrated IMHO.. And the EKo thing is only limited to Lagos Island (EKO) - please other parts of the Island in Lagos were NEVER under Bini.. I'm from EPE and bini people NEVER ruled over waterside Ijebu people.. Bini history is overrated, period. You are very funny. You are looking at historical facts from the perspective of today's motorways!! And who said the road to Dahomey in them days was thru Ijebuland! Eko is closer to Dahomey than Ijebu is. So How did they get to Eko?? Benin history, overrated or not, is the most outstanding compilation of historical events in all of Sub-Saharan Africa. While other tribes including the Yorubas were limited to Oral history which is usually replete with folklore, the Binis documented their history for centuries and all of that is still available for your perusal. A 1000 year history that replete with specific names, actions, locations, events and much more!! You can call it overrated in comparison to others that passed down fables and folklore as evidence of their history. |
alj harem: My point exactly. Waruese ose mwen, Ivineva e yoruba kevbe edo khin, my brother akugbe o e etin.Alj Harem. You wouldn't get an answer from him because he is a Yoruba man and would not understand your funny connotations! |
alj harem: Papabrown,Alj Harem I will give you an account to read and Its up to you to judge for yourself if you have records of a better history than what is outlined here. The Bini account is replete with facts, places, names of characters and is devoid of overt myths and legends. The only myths that existed were not in the history itself but in the belief-isms of the people of the time. The people of the time believed the Ogisos were from the sky. With 20/20 hindsight we all know that the Ogisos were mere humans who successfully created and perpetuated a myth around themselves and that myth was used to maintain rulership over the people. On the contrary, Oduduwa is said to have come from the sky and the Yorubas are still laying claim to that myth. Izoduwa on the other hand is said to have gone to Yoruba land. I mean the coincidenc eis way too much and while one is mythical, the other is factual. Read the link below to judge for yourself. http://www.edo-nation.net/naiwu1.htm |
How on earth can we see ourselves as Yorubas?? Where do you live?? Why are Yorubas so love struck with the Binis?? Its a good thing though! We love you back. First, Edos have a well documented history and culture that dates back to the 9th century. Well documented I said. Secondly, Edo is a forbear of various ethnic groups both in the country and outside. These groups have their history and ancestory tied to the EDO heritage. From Uhrobos to Itsekiris to Isokos in the south all the way to Lagos in the west. Interestingly, the whole of Lagos traditional rulership was set up by the Binis. The word Eko is a Bini word. Ever wonder why it is called the Oba of Lagos? While I wouldn't want to argue history here I would just tell you to judge between these two accounts Yorubas say Oduduwa fell from heaven. Edos say Oduduwa was the son of of an Ogiso whose name is Izoduwa(bini word) who was banished from the kingdom. The Benin account is very detailed and laced with real and practical stories and names. The Yoruba account is mere Folklore. Judge for yourself which is right. The question should be whether the Yorubas see themselves as Edos and not the other way round. And I believe the answer is yes, which is why Yorubas have this love affinity with everything Bini. To be fair and truthful , there is a lot of commonalities between both tribes. |
Nigeria done baraje!! Look at the comments on this thread! Something great has happened with the construction of this vessel and people are talking about Fuel Subsidy probe!! Nigeria done baraje! Na tell me, if it were Dangote or Adenuga, would anyone talk about subsidy probe!! A private citizen is working so hard and employing so many Nigerians and with this project has taken Nigerian engineering to another level and people are here complaining. Gosh! I know FENOG from when they were a small company. They've grown now! Even before they became big, they were an excellent example of a socially responsible company. This feat they've achieved would spur other companies to do even more. This local content thing is working really well in the Niger Delta. Many local companies have acquired technical competence and are beginning to push the limits with intentions to compete with the multinationals. I was talking with one CEO of a servicing company and he mentioned his intentions to start fabricating pipes here in Nigeria. Many other companies owned by locals are also making good plans. We will hit critical mass soon and the whole oil servicing industry would be in the hands of Nigerians. Thats billions of dollars in savings and hundreds of thousands of jobs brought home. The $9 Billion EGTL project was good as it helped lots of companies garner enough experience in O&G construction Engineering. |
I totally agree with the observations about interiors. It is sad when people beat their chest to say they built their house for N100-N200million. Yet when you enter these buildings, there is nothing to wow you about them. Government buildings are even the worst culprits. Visit some of our so called muti-stars hotels and you will be disappointed. The interiors lack character, you don't know if it is Contemporary style, Classical, Art Deco or Minimalist. They just lump everything together, creating a horrible collage of mis-matched elements. I used to live and study in Italy where I got a Masters in Interior Architecture. I took for granted that my services will be hot cake in Nigeria, but On getting back to Nigeria. I found out that most nigerians will spend millions on blockwork but won't want to spend a quater of that on their Interiors. Secondly, most people here still don't know what the whole concept of Interiors is all about. They wait until the entire building has being completed and plastered then, they call the Interior Architect to come and do the painting and POP. Not knowing that it goes way beyond that. Interior Design should include Spatial planning, circulation, space layout, Natural and artificial Lighting, furniture distribution etc. the Designer should be involved as soon as the floor plans are ready. He should be given a copy of the building plans to edit and input his own design right from the onset before construction commences. It is important that the Designer is responsible for even the tinniest of details down to the location of light switches and dimmers. It is all of these tiny details that come together to give that wow factor to every interior. I know some clients are difficult to convince, but after a good project it shouldn't be a problem. I just finished a Restaurant in Asokoro, Abuja. And it was only after we completed the project that the client truly understood and appreciated what I had being saying all along.
Bros! I Like your speech! Very apt. Please post some pics if possible. I might be needing your services on a commercial retail project. |
So much for "Figurative Proverb". And it is not yet 2015!! They've started their masters bidding. |
By Aliyu Dangida Jega, INEC boss, escapes mob attack in Jigawa Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Mohammed Jega, reportedly escaped death, yesterday, when some youths attacked him at the palace of the Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Hussaini Adamu, in Jigawa State. Jega was said to be in the town to attend the wedding of the daughter of emir. It was gathered that trouble started around 12:30 pm when the INEC boss was coming out of the palace and the youths identified him. A young girl allegedly led the attack when she collected sand and threw it at the vehicle in which the INEC chairman was riding. Then the youths, Sunday Vanguard learnt, in hundreds, began to hurl stones at Jega’s convoy. Several cars in the convoy were said to have been damaged and their glasses smashed. Sources said the situation would have been worse but for the intervention of security forces. The youths sang war songs alleging betrayal on Jega’s path. “You cheated us, you cheated the North, you declared falsed result, you denied General Buhari the chance to be the president of Nigeria, it was injustice, we will not forgive you”, some of them said.. Another drama played out immediately thereafter when retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC), arrived the scene. The youths hailed him, saying he was the answer to Nigerians socio-economic, political, religious and ethnic problems. Contacted, however, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abdul, Jinjiri denied the attack on Jega. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/05/jega-inec-boss-escapes-mob-attack-in-jigawa/ |

afam4eva: Some people seemed to be worried that he spoke hausa which in their dirty minds gives credence to the fact that he's an extremist.Nobody cares what language he spoke in. But every time he says something horrendous, he always says it in Hausa and claims afterwards that the translator misquoted him. He did it with the Sharia issue. He did it just before the elections. And now his supporters are trying to help him to it again. The man is just a really bad politician and also a bad leader. Anybody that talks before he thinks . . . . . Just thinking . . . . . . I hope Buhari is not Schizophrenic! Below is the definition. Please compare with his words. Schizophrenia (/ˌskɪtsɵˈfrɛniə/ or /ˌskɪtsɵˈfriːniə/) is a mental disorder characterized by a breakdown of thought processes and by poor emotional responsiveness.[1] It most commonly manifests itself as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking, and it is accompanied by significant social or occupational dysfunction Dog and the Baboon What does that have to do with elections. Where is the correlation. Dog and Baboon soaked in blood. You gat to have a different kind of thinking to come up with that!! Auditory Hallucinations & Bizarre Delusions!! |
One is a thief, the other is a terrorist. One loves money, the other loves blood. We all love money, we don't like blood. I would rather be held back by corruption than be held back by terrorism. |
logicboy: You dont know what a skeleton looks like? Were there not people from ancient times buried with ancient artifact? Do you know what carbon dating is?How do you know that people from ancient times were buried with ancient artifacts?? Please tell me how you came to that conclusion, because you weren't there when they claimed that happened. So how come you know for sure that people were buried with ancient artifacts? For all I care they could just be rock formations that looked like skeletons and it could all just be coincidental. I'm surprised you believed that- something you never sensed!! Carbon Dating? You believe that stuff?? Seriously?? Definition Radiocarbon dating (sometimes simply known as carbon dating) is a radiometric dating method that uses the naturally occurring radioisotope carbon-14 (14C) to estimate the age of carbon-bearing materials up to about 58,000 to 62,000 years. What the heck is radioisotope. Whats that definition up there?? Someone just came up with something from his head and named it Radioisotope, a group of people believed him and today are using what they believe to ascertain the age of materials?? No exact measure to test the authenticity since nobody was present thousands of years ago to verify for us if carbon dating is accurate?? And yet without that full proof accuracy, you believe in carbon dating?? Can you explain how different are you from all them Christians who go around believing stuff they have no proof or sensory based evidence about? |
