In the 80's a 2nd Republic minister replyng queries about the poor economy replied amongst others that Nigerians had not started eating out of the dust bin.... six months later the man at the helm today took over with a promise to stay the status quo ante. Guess what 35 years later the talk has become the reality. ... unfortunately under the regime that came to save. |
If you are in Portharcourt just stick to the highways and don't be tempted to negotiate any back street even if the trafiic is jamming. The way the locals share land and create roadways is a mystery only known to the ancient gurus of trigonometry. If your limo cannot turn to a python then you will call a welder to retun its old status. |
What do you mean you don't know. It is blatant corruption.... by any standards. How can a politocal office holder be running a business which controls the finances of the state. It can only happen in Nigeria and only hapoen in Tinubu's Lagos. And folks hsve been quiet for all of 20 years and trillions of naira. If President Obasanjo who became HOS at the time Mr. Tinubu became Governor had created a company called 'Proton Electron' that was collecting all revenues of acrruable to the Federal government and keeping a tithe to himself by proxy what will he have been called after twenty years of buying all government patronage. Will he not have been labelled the most corrupt leader that ever lived. To say that this is still happening in 2018 under a 'regime of probity' in the headquarters of all the civil society groups and noise making associations of good governance and probity... without question.... |
DareBello:For 3rd rate hotels, maybe. For individuals this list is mediocre.... anyway such are free things... |
martineverest:He has a point. Cable TV is both a product and a service. One can be regulated by standards via authority. The other can be regulated via patronage. It is not a critical product or service that has any bearing on life or health conditions so if the quality of service is poor you regulate with you feet. Government cannot legislate the quality of services it is up to consumers to regulate with their feet. What government does is to promote the diversification of services and ensure there are no anti trust issues... aka cartels. This is the problem with cable tv in Nigeria.... no competition. Government should generate that. |
I am a fan of private sector education but this is just reprehensible. I think it gives further impetus for government to withdraw from funding education directly and concentrate its lean resources on being an umpire, a regulator. To play and officiate in a game at the same time leaves institutional cracks similar to those on the walls and floors of that college building, cracks that mushroom private universities like this fall through. Too bad. You go for a single honours program and graduate with an additional honour of being the first man from your town to catch a yet named parasitic, bacterial or viral disease. All they should be allowed to teach there is Microbiology. |
If enough is enough means to uncouple the Saraki family train from the long suffering people of the state, then it can never be hate speech. Rather sounds like a SOS message. But of course will the people wake up....? Now that Saraki senior is in the PDP there is no reason for the state to vote in the PDP without continuing the legacy of hopelessness. |
..... raided a village where the Chief of Army Staff comes from ?.... wow. What incentive does he need to relocate to his village. Where is he going to be buried when his time here on earth is done...hmmm... |
Even for a learned person this is disappointing and must be some sort of colourless joke. The Republican party of the United States is in power today but surely no one even the cranky and maverick Donald Trump will not tweet that the Democratic party will never occupy the White House again. Who will take him seriously when just four and a half terms ago a certain Republican, George Bush was in the White House and thoroughly messed up the United States with a futile and costly war in the middle east. Who will have thought the Republican party could ever win another White House according to Mr Osinbajo. Well he knows his audience. |
obailala:I think you have hit the very bottom in trying to insinuate that the collection of church offerings amounts to fraud simply because fraud is an act of subtelty and the manipulation of the mind for gain. For your information tithes and offerings are statutory in the kingdom of God. They are not spiritually optional. They are the taxes and levies of the kingdom of God similar to the taxes and levies of the kingdom of man. Fraud on the other hand is not statutory but arbitrary. It cannot be published, it cannot be presented as true or legit. It is opportunistic. And I think this is where Christians miss it completely in explaining what goes on in the kingdom of God to those who are without. You donot have an option in taxation. You cannot and should not evade it even if the governmemt has no power to withdraw it forcibly from your account. And just like earthly taxes and levies there are benefits in paying them to you as an individual and there are penalties to pay for evading them. In the old testament these penalties were physical but to the gentiles and the new testament church these penalties are purely spiritual and since the interaction of God with man is based solely on the grace of Jesus Christ both blessings and punishments are simply the application and withdrawal of grace which means a serious difference between the welfare or battles a typical Christian faces. No one physically forces anyone because it is expected that the understanding of these things should prompt a positive response. So you cannot say because the message and practice of tithing and offerings is one of mental persuation so it amounts to fraud by deception. No. It is rather the teaching of the ways of the kingdom similar to the teachings you will receive if you pass through the immigration system of a foreign country in the process of getting a new citizenship. If you accuse the church of using subtely then you may as well accuse the government of using fraudulent means to collect taxes and levies from its citizens when it advertises for people to pay up. What we should do on both sides of the kingdom is to be more open, accountable and respectful of the sacrifices the citizens of these two distinct kingdoms make in paying.... speaking to leaders of the country and leaders of the church. |
dominique:Of course not. Do you want to change Nigeria for the better.... are you seriously asking folks to start using thier minds... ![]() |
bishopkay:Of course. President Buhari is not obliged to do anything not in his favour. Who does that. There is no leader on earth who will pull the trigger that will amount to his own political suicide so please be realistic here. It behoves in the NA to play the politics that is required for it to 'get things done' and this is done in modern politics by horse trading, by crearing a zero sum scenario and forcing the President to make what amounts to a Hobson's choice. Unfortunately most in the NA are not that smart. Rarely will you see in modern politics stand alone issues of great importance being battled for. We must evolve our polity so that we posses the carrot and stick mentality at all times. Politics is like chess. You either have incentives at hand or create multiple strike positiins to give your adversary no easy options. |
Yep. On any matter for that reason but it is hard... very hard.... damn hard.... mission almost impossible..... and will be prolonged, atrocious, wasteful of time and treasure.... bribes giving and taking, messy...and will keave all parties all but discredited. I love the principle of separation of powers for one reason. It hold power accountable, it humbles the proud and reins in the unruly. Tnere is no reason the President should assent to what he does not want and there is no reason for the NA to assent to what they do not want. So Mr. President can and may win this but he should know that from here on in it will be super rough and tough for him to get any thing else done constitutionally. They will simply delay, frustrate and make him a lame duck. That is why both parties must negotiate. That is why both parties must conceede to make things happen. That is why I love the separation of powers. That is why democracy is good.... of course speaking of true democracies. |
theoldpretender:Not looking forward to anything. This election thing is a big business burner. I might consider shifting my annual leave to February. Wanted a jolly good Christmas... |
Zoharariel:Small pikin. Sukhoi's and Migs to fight who. You don't even have a clue about what a military force is. Just to talk. |
dapsoneh:Don't over exaggerate. There are pot holes on roads all over the world and.anyone that drives cars knows about them. What often happens is that they are repaired a lot quicker and sometimes compensation is paid for.accidents and vehicular damage. But to say people.don't know what potholes are in the developed world is a plain lie. |
It is idle people thay care whether a phone has a 'notch' or not. Can it make calls please. |
theoldpretender:Are you joking. Remove subsidy only and see how Nigerians will start wailing.... |
I can't even raise a finger to touch a child.... well except the one I met at a supermart in Abuja a few months back. The Lebanese mum (I think) was just looking helplessly as this kid turned the whole place over and insulted anyone that tried to rein his wildness in. |
May just be security concerns. I have a couple of foreign clients who have put off business till after the elections. Nothing I can say but agree. This is a nascent democracy. Everyone is concerned. It behoves on all parties particularly government to ensure minimal disturbance to the national psyche throughout this transition.... by toning down the infamous 'do or die' rhetoric in all its ugly forms. It is affecting us all and it will cut into my numbers next year. |
Nukilia:The product of challenges and difficulties equal competence. We are a nation that abhors challenges and sacrifice competence so our product is difficulties. A simple equation. A nation where everyone depends on government for everything will never get government to do anything. If Nigerians want to see progress they have to start taking responsibility. Out of the 5 million released for the reconstruction, Americans will probably have paid 3.5 million in taxes and levies and another 1 million in bonds.... how will you not act fast after collecting peoples sweat. In Nigeria 2.9 million will have come from the Shell oil fields of Bonga and another 2 million from the Agip gas fields. Since you did not work for it, neither did you know when or how the funds were generated and collected you cannot make any demand. You are at their mercy. There is a big difference between salary and gift. One is mandatory, the latter is indiscriminate. And there lies the difference. Nigerians are not responsible enough to enjoy the kind of society we desire. If your dad still feeds you, it is one thing to demand a Ferrari, it is quite another to demand for a gold painted Ferrari for Christmas. If we want to see such stuff happening in Nigeria we need to leave our comfort zones of big oil, free allocations, ridiculous subsidies, overbloated government, red tape and patronage and start paying for the country we want. To do this we need to restructure and there the matter ends.... we are not ready....so we will never see a road reconstructed in five days despite our unending disasters. |
Anduku:I just cannot understand what the fuss is all about. I am so dissapointed at the immaturity of the menfolk here. And it is not surprising marraiges donot last longer that the ceremonies that usher them in. If I openly express caution about a relationship,I cannot see how and why it should upset my partner be it a wife, a brother/sister, a co-company director, any relationship. If relationships are to work there must be set limits that are expressed and understood by both parties..... a lady can demand that there be no female househelp. The man can demand there be no male househelp. How a couple decide to live together and raise their children is up to them as long as it is right, hounourable and result oriented. What I can see expressed by a lot of folks here is crass pride and an overevaluation of ones position in a marital relationship. Can't see any success there. I fully support what the lady says. She has red lines, perhaps too red but if it gets the job done, fine. |
MyAmericandream:....so I left...can't stay sharp all the time when I'm not a scalpel... And I' m not very smart... just human. |
Sorry but by the same ignorance you ran your family is the same way you are ending it. What is the meaning of marrying a corpse. You should seek justice, perhaps compensation via a civil suit and leave the scene with a whole lot of lessons that may be useful to you if you have other children. That you must make the necessary sacrifices to train up and develop the girl child so that these tragedies are avoided in future. It is the same stupid traditions that will discriminate against girls in terms of education, enlightenment and empowerment leaving them haplessly at the mercy of predators and evil deviants who entice them to give up all for a morsel of meal. Failed parenting can only lead to sorrow and anguish. We must raise the quality of our womenfolk and enable them to make sound decisions in life and living. |
stam101:Was there last year.... as dead as a Dodo.... just don't bother. Been to most of these places at different times... and concluded that tourism is not in our DNA. Nigeria just doesn't know how to do it. I need a vacation this year but I just cannot decide on where to go and what to do....perhaps back to the ancient city of Kano. Haven't been there on 20 years. |

Much ado about nothing. Its like your doctor friend seeing your wife's privates at birth. Its like your attorney friend knowing the truth behind your messy divorce. Its like your banker knowing the dark secrets behind your ostentation. Its like your plumber knowing how many narco syringes your chucked down the shank. Its like your priest knowing how many corpses you stepped over on the way to the top.... When a man marries such a person he must carry with it the burden of the personality and the man must know that he cannot have a private life and logical living. Trust me. He will understand. Because next week it may be how long he lasts in bed or how many decibels his snore reads. I cannot see how this concerns the public.... how the couple chooses to live. |
In terms of democracy Lagos ranks in the bottom six in Nigeria. Even autocracies like we have in Kwara are being gradually dismantled. I wonder when proper multi-party democracy will be allowed to take root. The consequences of this state of affairs is dire. Once the otal leader is gone, the vacumn he livesis always filled with brutal violence. Congo, Cote D'Ivorie are sharp examples, Togo, Gabon lesser so. It never ends well. |
Mosesoly:Tell me one person who isn't. |
fyneguy:Abi oh. Power without ideas leads only to truancy... any sort of power. |
Denikayan:Silly man. Do you know how much a full grown cow weighs. |
