Thanks for the brilliant analysis below. You must really be an insider to understand and raise all the points in your post. Most of the people that comment on Telecom posts on nairaland are kids looking for freebies, so they don't really care. quote author=OlaAjia] Your question is a very valid one Pozzy. I will attempt to address your question as an insider. Firstly, 27naira has addressed part of it, albeit in a rude tone. Truly, the lack of electricity is one of the problems faced by telecommunications service providers. We've even had situations where thieves bring massive cranes to steal 100KVA generators. But let me be clear, this is just a small one of the numerous problems. Basically, the dearth of cheap data services is mostly as a result of infrastructural deficits. In UK, you have cheap services mostly because BT, the telecoms company funded partly by the public already has existing national infrastructure that other telecoms companies such as SKY, T-mobile, vodaphone and Virgin networks to mention a few, depend on for backhaul (long distance connectivity between cities and indeed, countries) services. These networks can therefore afford to rent bandwidth from BT at very cheap rates, through BT's fibre infrastructure, while only having to provide last-mile services to their subscribers. Hence data services can go as cheap as £5 (NGN 1,500) for broadband connectivity with unlimited downloads. In Nigeria, Nitel could have played the same role as BT, providing all the small networks with national coverage using fibre infrastructure. However, due to lack of foresightedness, government bureaucracy and fiscal mismanagement, NITEL fibre infrastructure is either virtually non-existent or dilapidated. Hence, networks have to build their own infrastructure from the scratch. This is an extremely expensive exercise, especially when using fibre, which really, is the only thing that can guarantee true broadband with virtually unlimited download limit. Furthermore, due to the absence of a national carrier, some private operators, who already have a healthy amount of National fibre coverage do rent out bandwidth to other networks, but at premium rates (obviously to stall competition). Also, as you may know, Nigeria now has numerous submarine fibre connections to Europe (ie Glo1, MainOne, WASC Etc) with amazing bandwidths. While these will in the long run, help to significantly reduce the cost of internet in Nigeria, there is still need for inland fibre connections to complement the services, but because of terrain challenges and the fact that these things are not regulated in Nigeria, Telcos can be discouraged to make massive investments like that. As a Network, I can build fibre from Lagos (where most submarines land at) to Abuja for example, and tomorrow, one man can just wake up and say I want to build a school or a filling station there, and without informing me, starts digging. This results in fibre cuts which ultimately affects network performance. Obviously, such things make networks reluctant to embark on those expensive projects, only to have their infrastructure damaged by lack of government regulation and planning. That said, many networks are braving the odds and building these things, not because these problems aren't there but because in the long term, they will benefit immensely from the growing economy of the country and subsequent dependence on real-time information sharing in businesses( they say time is money). These are just few of the numerous challenges the these telecoms companies face. So when NCC says the only company making real profit is MTN, know that it is not a lie. These companies remain in Nigeria more because of the potential the country holds, than because of elusive high profits or anything of such. All the huge amounts they make are usually reinvested in fixing vandalised properties, refueling their generators which are practically the primary sources of power of the base stations, fixing fibre cuts, maintaining their staff, when necessary, paying areaboys who would not allow them work on their sites, building new fibre routes and other operational expenses. Before anyone condemns the Telcos in Nigeria, one must really understand the mountain loads of challenges they face. That HoA is a place filled with politicians, not technocrats, hence they lack this basic understanding which is why they can make ill-informed declarations such as "Improve services or leave the country". Fact is, with the exception of MTN, Nigeria has more to lose if these people leave the country than they will lose. For one, they already have very profitable investments elsewhere, but imagine Nigeria without Mobile telephony? Somethings are better left imagined!
|
A post about AIRTEL didn't get up to five replies before it became a topic about MTN. And all these posters willl claim they no longer use MTN and have since dumped the SIM, but reality on ground says otherwise. Am I missing something? |
Elueme: these projs being commissioned were initiated since his first term.. Or your brain's memory is so short 2 knw he is serving a second tenureBut a friend of yours claim they were all GEJ projects on this thread. Was GEJ there with Fash during Fash's first term? |
Elueme: these projs being commissioned were initiated since his first term.. Or your brain's memory is so short 2 knw he is serving a second tenureAlways quick to insult. A serious sign of lack of depth. First or second term, he has commissioned more projects and that is a FACT! |
Why is it that GEJ supporters always try to make Fashola look bad all the time? All you have to do is make compelling arguments for your subject. If they are not being biased at all, they will see that Lagos may have commissioned more projects than the FG in the last one year. |
Strangely, most of the things GEJ administration could point to as achievements just happen to be in the southwest or Lagos. isn't this the same region that some claimed will be marginalized because they booted PDP out? Or are the ACN governors really doing something right? |
Why cancel or postpone this debate? This one should have been concluded no matter what and lesson learned used in a better organization of subsequent ones. Postponement or outright cancellation will cause loss of interest in the next round or subsequent debates. Let's try and conclude this today. Please! |
Up GEJ! Up PDP!!! |
Beaf and Billyonaire must be identical twins of nairaland based on their posts. Damn too similar. |
Burrito: Instead of suing, try a simpler approach - walk into the bank where it happened. Ask for a floor manager and explain your predicament. If they refuse to refund your money, then ask to see the branch manager. You never know, they might be nice and willing enough to compensate you. Or maybe i'm being naive, dunnoThis is what a logical person will do. An opportunist will see a chance of becoming a millionare. If it that easy, the banks will be out of business |
Assumin the OP has a legit case, how does losing 1050naira translate to sueing for 250mill naira? Unless you can prove to the court that seizure of the card or debited cash resulted into other significant loses than ran into millions, otherwise , you will be seen as a thief. I have seen and heard people talk about sueing for million even when loses to them is just 200naira. Mind you, you cant sue on behalf of everyone else that has similar cases. A lot of less greedy and logical customers make their case known and sometimes get reward for their manner of approach. All I can deduce from all these hundreds of million naira suits from 1000 naira loses are bloody opportunits |
fork adict: But at least i would be glad that the blood sucking vampires (which includes you cos they pay you for licking their assss) would be either out of jobs or out of naija. For good! ![]() A kid |
This reasons below can only come from a kid or who doesn't know what he is talking about. Keep wasting away your productive years chasing MTN, when they crash or leave your miserable life will still be starring you in the eye. MTN must crash, they are frauds, but you keep using them. Typical NIGERIAN. Everything and every decision they make is based on sentiments. Leave the goddamn network and get a life. How hard can that be for you? fork adict: Ok. na you and your employer fit reason logically abi? No worry number portability go soon show. |
fork adict: I know say you go everly show for here.I am afraid you can not reason logically. Number portability will come and it will not translate to FREE CALLS. All your rants is about freebies. And right now without number portability you can move quietly to the network that offers such. I ve noticed on this forum how all people do is complain, but on the same thread they refer to one as better. Then voila they come and open a thread about the same good op |
fork adict: About a year ago, I started a thread on MTN's greed, insensitivity to the plight of their customers, and abuse of the rare priviledge bestowed on them by their teeming customers, pride, amongst other other crimes. I compared their tariffs to other networks and pointed out that they were out to kill their customers rather than add value to their lives. You need to get a life and stop all these your MTN online smear campaign. We have four major GSM operators, four major CDMA operators and the power to choose solely lies in your hands. All these bring them down, chase them away and they will soon crash adds no value to you. Even when they crash, it will still not add value to your life. FORK ADICT, YOU NEED TO GROW UP. @Others, number portability will soon be implemented this year so I believe all this childish rants online will end by then. Also, regulators (NCC ) are not put there to kill bussinesss hence they too will have nothing to regulate. I still stand by the fact that the telecoms industry has added more to the Nigerian economy more than any other sector in the last ten years. It was properly regulated since begining, that is why there is healthy competition there. And you can easily grow your subscriber base if you do the business right. When GLO was busy with their MTN fixation, ETISALAT came and roled out friendly packages and has recorded the biggest growth compared to all the others they met. Yes, we have every right to complain when there are QOS issues, hidden charges, outright theft, network challenges etc. But when the underlying basis for complaint is just about freebies, they are from South Africa, bla bla bla , then we are just being shallow and bigots. The truth of the matter is businesses that are poorly run and insensitive to customers will surely die a natural death in a competitive market. If MTN truly are scams and insentitive to customers, it is just a matter of time before they go under. But if over time they continue to grow the way they have over the years, then only rants will amount to nothing. Do you all know why? They are still doing somethings right! |
Ike Diogu has made me a very happy man The Tigers have made me a very happy man Up Tigers!!! |
divine2043: Yup Nigeria leads. Has Nigeria ever participated at the Olympics Basketball? The Male team: No The female team: Yes |
We can win this if game we keep up the tempo of the game We are more athletic than Dominican republic |
Based on some comments on this thread, I can't help but feel BOKO HARAM MEMBERS ARE ON NAIRALAND! |
Aregbesola and ACN again! Beaf: If you like, keep thinking about "the governing party" and don't get your arse off the floor. |
Any critic of this write up does not love creative thinking and writing. BRILLIANT!!! |
NCC set international network parameters for the telecoms operators in Nigeria. This they feel will help the customers significantly because international quality of service ( QoS )if achieved simply means the network is good. Unfortunately, the operating environment for telecoms bussiness in Nigeria in one of the most difficult you can get in the whole world. Some of the issues faced daily be these operators include: - Power issues. Running of all base stations and switches on generator - Multiple taxation - Community issues. Every street/ town or village where these base stations are make unrealistic demands on these operators - Government agaencies eg NESREA - Vandals. People will be amazed at the number of sites vandalized across the country daily. Generators, diesel and fibre cuts almost on a daily basis. - Multiple taxations. LGA, State and Fedral government collect tax directly from them. These are just a few examples. These operators have asked NCC to take some of these situations into consideration before these standards were set, but it fell on deaf ears. Imagine NESREA shutting down a base station and NCC still penalising the operator for poor QOS in the same area. Double punishment. If they continue to pay fine, how will they be able to roll out and upgrade their network? Yes, standard QOS should be the target but fining these operators only compounds the problem because the QOS will continue to degenerate if they take this route. Rewarding customers on their network may be a better idea. If the FG can fix power and make telecoms base stations National infrastructure that comes with serious punishment if vandalzed, will seriously help boost this better QOS NCC is looking for. |
BizBooks: So what do you want the Committee on Sports to be doing? By their very composition, they- It is a committee on sports and not football. A lot of Nigerians in other sports have done well representing the country this year. FYI our national basketball team still has a chance to make the olympics if they do well in the qualifiers coming up in Venezuela soon. The point I am trying to make is, they need to look inward, a lot still has to be done concerning sports in Nigeria. Honouring a player for a trophies won playing for a foreign club makes no sense. You will be amazed if you go to the national stadium in Lagos and hear stories from associations that could not attend international events in Africa due to lack of funds. What is this committe doing about such cases? If they truly know what they are there for, this Mikel idea would not even cross their minds. |
AND THERE GOES THE SUBSIDY REPORT! NO ONE WILL BE PROSECUTED AND NOBODY WILL GO TO JAIL. AND LIFE GOES ON FOR THE POOR MAN ON THE STREET. |
Aratunde: Please someone should kindly explain. What is the fixed charge for. Also if I travel or transformer is faulty for 6mths, does it accumulates to #3000 payable at nxt rcharge. ThanksI dont know much about the new tariifs but I think pre-paid meters will be introduced and it basiclly a pay as you use thing. If you dont have power, your money stays intact |
My earlier response ( on page2) is exactly what you wrote. It is as if you were with me when I wrote mine. linearity: Ordinarily, you cannot equate your marriage to a job. Marriage should be more important than a job.....but for you to have thought about canceling the wedding in the first place, my advice is tha you should not keep your job and cancel the wedding. |
I think the OP agreed to marry the guy when she was still jobless. Now that she has secured a job, she is not so sure of her love for the man. That's why I strongly believe people will always act differently when they have financial independence. The OP doesn't trulY love this guy. The marriage was just a convenient decision then due to her situation. If she has had this job before the guy proposed, I am certain her answer will be NO. So, I will suggest the OP should cancel the wedding and move on with her life, because, certainly she feels she can now do better ( get a better man ) If this man that proposed is the man she feels she wants to spend the rest of her life with, she would not be here asking this question |

21st century women: They ve successfully turned everything in a relationship upside down all in the name of civilization. Very soon, they will claim they don't want to carry babies in their womb, afterall, technology can take care of that. But I think as they grow older and become more matured, these things that their men desire in from them ( cooking, cleaning etc) are the main things that made them desirable partners. And they keep wondering why the modern men to hardly stay committed. I see in not to distant future, the whole essence of getting married not worth it anymore. We are gradually eroding family/marriage values with this modernization attitude. I look forward to the time when a male and a female get together, have sex like chickens and they both go their separate ways. If any of these ladies were raised in homes where their mothers cooked, served meals and the dinning table and everyone eats together, they would not come online and write rubbish. These moments provide serious bonding for members of such Family and I wouldn't trade it for any thing. |
Politics on NL is kind of funny. Any neutral mind that comes to this site can obviously notice people write stuffs based on sentiments a lot But in the midst of all these sentimental posts, one still gets to read so very intelligent and balanced views. With time, a very smart mind will get to know who the desperate ones are. Some posters and IDs readily come to mind this site with these propanganda and sentiments. What most of these posters fail to realise is, the more you try to whip up sentiments on line, the more you damage your case on the same forum when you even have one. Genuine posters with the interest of the country at heart put up their opinions and hope people will be able to decide who is saying the truth. Liars in my opinion are always to desperate to pass it on as the truth. The posters that fall under these category knows themselves. Lets I forget, the ethnic bigots are childish. Most times, they act like secondary school kids in the same class making fun of one another. Just my opinion. |
