I haven't really built a fully-fledged UI-designed production-ready app yet. But, I have seen and read the opinion of other senior developers who have tried it; Compose is stable and production ready. Companies have started adopting it in their products screen by screen, component by component.

I'll assume you talk this way probably because you haven't tried other Mobile UI frameworks like Flutter, Swift UI, and React. The focus and benefits of Compose aren't really about writing less code but of course, it's one of the benefits. The thing is the shift in paradigm from an Inheritance style which the classic XML is designed with to a declarative approach. In the classic XML, we have a View class(which represents a rectangular area on the screen and is responsible for drawing and event handling). The TextView class is a subclass of the View class, which means that TextView inherits all the properties and functionality from the View class, plus adds specific logic for displaying text to the user. The exact hierarchy goes with a Button and an EditText and other ViewGroups. It goes down like a tree structure. Of course, it helps everyone reuse the ability for example for an EditText to have the ability to display stuff. The drawback is that we are limited to building complex UIs. With Compose, we can reuse Composables very easily and it's very intuitive. You can do lots of customization and behavior for your UI very easily. The point about Compose is simply about Composition in object-oriented programming(OOP). You can read more about it.

Like, this style of designing UI is overdue in Native Android. Flutter, Swift UI, and React are already doing well with this approach to building UI.
The only thing I love well about building UI with XML is the WYSIWYG editor which is great. I think it's suitable and helpful for beginners.
That said, you can still use Compose and XML together In your project.

I know everything you're talking about regarding declarative approach & Android devs will have no choice in the future but to adopt Compose because that is direction Mobile Engineering is going in general, but Compose specifically being stable and production ready is what I am not quite sure of. I know some few companies using it in production and they are still having to deal with some issues as early adopters.

For example, I used Kotlin Multiplatform from Jetbrains personally and also use it in my company, therefore I can suggest the best usecase for it when asked to recommend, not just because company X or person Y says it's awesome, because they always hype everything, same way they were hyping out React Native but when you actually implement it for big projects, you'd find that the performance was problematic. We wanted to also use Compose earlier this year in my company and after going through the drawbacks, we decided it was not yet time.

My point is, it needs a lot of improvement. It is not yet as awesome as Google engineers make it seem. At least not yet.

I just started learning about compose and it's just too awesome and beautiful. I remember the boilerplate code we usually write using recyclerview, adapter and view holder to display a list. This is now a breeze with LazyColumn composable with just 3-5 lines of code. This is just one out of many awesome stuff it has.
When building your UI with compose, you're mostly thinking of rows and columns.
I believe it's still growing and needs more improvement. Plus, google is fully supporting it

Have you built a fully fledged UI designed production app yet with Compose though? I don't mean to sound like a kill-joy but less code doesn't always mean it's better. For you to know the full power of a toolkit, you need to build a full fledged application & deploy it to production. If you're implementing MVVM or MVI with clean architecture, you're going to be writing a lot of boilerplate code on Android anyway, so that one is normal.

I would have more positive feedback when i have explored it to a large extent. I need to find all the Sweet spots myself. Another issue is stability, you have to stay on a specific Compose version and remain on it else each time you update, you might start getting compile time errors because things change really quick.

I think this is the major problem, generally when you start learning new stuff, you're eager to tell everyone how to learn. People cannot just calm down and relax to learn for at least 6 months before they start advising us on how to do bla bla bla.

At some point you would need to learn from books because some concepts would need proper reading before you can understand.

Back then, A child in the average Nigerian home can't say he wants to study CS without getting instantly rebuked by his parents just because of the same stereotype. That was how my dad refused me to study my CS five years ago after secondary school. Instead he forced me to go study pharmacy, just because he wants to use me to brag to his friends who's children are also medical doctors and pharmacists. My personal advice is to defer your admission and continue with Microverse software development full-Time program. A Bachelors Degree can be gotten anytime you are ready again, surviving in Nigeria is very important. Do what you must do to increase your income. Dollar rates have increased exponentially, soon that 150k will not be enough. My advice for every Nigerian, whether in Tech, Accounting, HR or any career is to find foreign companies and earn in dollars. With Atiku or Tinubu been favourites to win this coming election, the economy is going to be in shambles in the next 8 years.

Every candidate thinks so, the cost of relocating a Nigeria is expensive and tedious, esp when they can just pick someone else. Nothing is ever sure until you see offer letter or even Visa sef, anything can happen

This one happened to me, I was given an offer but denied visa twice. Naija factor.

For me, I know if someone keeps interviewing for a year, one of them will definitely workout and most times It's the one we don't expect that ends up working out. So far the companies that stress me the most in Interviews have ended up giving me the less reward, so I have completely removed my mind from expecting a reward just because I suffered in the process. This is just my personal experience.

I feel luck is when preparation meets opportunity. It takes a whole lot mentally to be good at algorithms and opportunities are always coming in tech. Imagine Amazon the other day announcing that they are coming to recruit from Nigeria and a dev gets an interview. How would you pass without knowing algorithms. Last year, a career fair was held in Lagos here for tech bros. More than 100 tech guys got jobs in Canada. It was all relocation based and the interview was all Algo based. A lady friend of mine who got a job in Canada that sponsored her visa attended this fair. It's not assurance of job but it's improving your luck. Even when I dont have any interview or anything I will always be prepared cause you never know when that opportunity will come and when that time comes you have to be ready.

I never argued about preparation not meeting opportunity. My point is there is always an element of luck in the company that eventually picks you, the actual decision is not determined by how you pass the interview per say, there are other factors involved. That is why I was stressing to the OP not to worry too much when you fail an Interview, you move to the next one. The engineering manager may not be happy with how you answered one question in particular & frown upon that.

This becomes more prominent if you apply for Senior Roles EG: Senior backend, Senior Frontend, Senior Mobile etc, you won't only have Algo questions. Behavioural questions, System Design Interviews can also be a pain in the neck, ofcourse you'll still have to prepare for that too but then it becomes more trickier. You will also be asked specific questions in your field of expertise and you need to know what you're doing.

There is nothing wrong in preparing for Algos daily, if you have the time and resource, do it. Everybody has to prepare for months to start Interview process.

My point is believing that there is no element of luck in the company that eventually picks you is false. I have done enough Interviews in my lifetime and I can tell you that for free.

You're probably new to this industry or maybe just 2 years in, you believe that by being the best leetcoder will get you the best jobs. While this could be true, it could just be suffering without smiling because It doesn't guarantee that you will get the job. That you pass an interview doesn't mean you will get the job. The hiring manager needs to look at your situation all round to make a decision. That's where luck comes in.

Making Good Progress, Here is my update on the React native App I have been working on, this is my first react native app but alot of the code is largely from MatterMost, I studied their code and built on top of their code. At first it was massively complex, but when you see how the code is broken apart, it's mostly the use of Redux to manage the state and render the component and the rest is mostly dealing with React Navigation.

Bro let's not lie, React Native is super complex and at this point, I won't recommend anyone to learn it.

Initially in 2019, i was regretting not learning it early because a lot of foreign startups were paying a ton for the skill set, I felt really backward and frustrated that I haven't learnt it yet. Fast forward to 2021, I have had many friends use React Native moving from iOS or Android Native development and I can tell you they all complained, most of them moved to Flutter or got back with Native Mobile dev.

Every new startup I see now are going the Flutter way, they want performace optimizations, they simply want peace of mind.

Companies like Shopify are stuck with React Native because they started quite early with it, so they want to optimize it and also keep using their Javascript devs. If Shopify was to start a new project, I can bet that they wouldn't go with React Native.

It is amazing how Facebook forced it down our throats because it somewhat had React style of writing attached to it, what is point of using a Framework that makes you cry or look incompetent every day.

Good luck getting a job with 50 commits as a beginner without experience. Most times, you'll only get to Data Structures and Algorithm stage IF you don't get screened out with your 50 commits.

I never did Data Structures based interview even as an entry level applicant. Thats not to say its not relevant though. Many organisations are adopting take-home "real" application development.

I get that you're giving an advice that newbies should follow which is good but I know a lot of people who would have gotten jobs without an active Github but they still had porfolios added to their CV or Linkedin.

Even if you have 1 Billion commit, some companies will still ask you for DSA interviews, you will still do a take home test.

If you read the OP's question follow-up, the company doesn't agree to remote working. He has to come to the office & I'm very sure most companies like that aren't based in Newcastle. If you live in outskirt of London & work in London, people do it but I don't think that make sense because you spend hours of time on the road, depending on which part of the city you are. So which time do you have to do other things?

Anyway, all in all 4k is a lot of money. So yes.
