I’m trying to get a global talent visa (tech nation route). The hope is to get it and then create a thread that would teach others how to do it but I got rejected on my first application. The plan now is to try again (while addressing the mistake I made in my last application) or pay a lawyer (waste of money as I still have to explain everything to them anyway lol)

After reading your quote, I smiled. Anyone who isn't in an actual programming field cannot grasp the information you are passing. That is why context is important. IT is very wide, a project manager or scrum master might never experience what you are saying. Very rare.

I did 6 stages of proper coding / behavioral interview with a company and I was dropped at the 6th stage. I got sooo depressed big time. Interviews are useful for learning but until you get the job, it is nothing in programming field.

The WordPress stigma is very real, in 2015 a company hired me as a web developer to work on Backend and create WordPress themes and Plugins, almost everyday colleagues make this kind of statements like Expression function.

NO.

There is always a required skill level that interviewers expect from you, usually when you pass that required level it means you are now competing with other candidates who are intelligent and have similar skills to you.

So if you are rejected at this stage, it would be because other candidates are better fit into the role than you are. Not for competency.

Now a team hiring for diversity will prefer to hire 2 ladies and 3 guys, it means the women would have less people to contend with, because few women apply for Development positions as compared to men. It's like 80/20.

It doesn't mean those women are dumb, they have already proved their competency by passing the required skill level initially.

PS: it's also a reason why some people do well in interviews and when the company doesn't give them an offer, they get confused. The reason is because there are more people to contend with for that position.

Standards were thrown in the bin for her sake. Women are employed for supposed emotional benefits, because all women make stuffy men groups more lovely. Please go back to my post and read again, i said the women most times get to the final round, and the decision on who to hire at the end may favour them because we already have so many males on the team and we need more females to join a team because they bring a different experience. Diversity is needed.

I asked how recruitment waters down things for women and got no response. I was hoping we could all learn something new. Rather than a response, there are more posts claiming things that sound more like personal opinions than fact. Have any of you interviewed women in tech to know what their competency and recruitment scrutiny was like in relation to their roles? No response?

Hiring and interviews are watered down for women in US tech market and some newly Nigerian tech markets, especially women of color, Muslim women or women who are in the marginalized groups like LGBTQ etc. This watered down approach is something i support fully and i believe is for the good of everyone.

Why do I say it's for the good of everyone?

According to Clement Mihailescu of AlgoExpert. Software engineering is not only about being a coding wizard, there are other qualities like team management, communication, timeliness and treating marginalized people with fairness etc.

Some women naturally posses some of these qualities than men and if a woman is in your team, there will be more cohesiveness. Everyone will start acting friendly which is good. At least according to my personal experience with my US company.

About this, watering down also doesn't mean she is dumb, because she must have passed the minimum mark to be amongst the finalist of the interview. The issue is when making the final decision, her being a woman is a plus for an existing male dominated team full of egoistic teammates, she will make the place better.

It's not all about Men vs Women, at least this is not about Men testosterone talk.

One thing I would like to add especially for newbies. America isn't the only country with remote jobs. A lot of people just set their sights on the USA. See try everywhere. There are countries that absolutely do not send where you are from at all at all and their governments have made laws for indigenous companies to hire programmers. Europe, developed Asian countries like Japan and South Korea and even developing Asian countries like Vietnam have Millons of jobs and they don't mind hiring foreigners at all.

Also places in Latin America like Mexico, Brazil, Chile and co. The list is endless. A lot of people just have their sights set on working remotely with American companies. Just expand your options.

From my personal experience, people look forward to remote jobs in US because they are the only ones who have a lot of cash at their disposal.

150k USD in America is what is a Mid-level dev can earn, meanwhile they are happy to find a dev in Africa to pay 50k or (4000 per month) contract. In other European countries like Germany, Holland etc they will offer to pay you 1500 - 2000 Euros per month for an African dev which seem like a lot of money to them.

See ehn, the money people earn in the US is like blood money putting it in literal terms. A Mid-level dev in Palo Alto can be earning 250k USD as opposed to a Principal Dev in Germany earning 80k Euros.

US is the way, i cannot decieve you bro.

I don't know who is advising you but your love for a particular field alone doesn't justify you going to that field. You have to make sure there are also opportunities before you choose where to focus.

Have you ever browsed LinkedIn jobs or any where and you saw influx of Data science jobs? Or is it sand that you want to be eating after learning data science? Have you ever asked yourself why and how do companies recruit for data science roles?

This is the same reason people choose foolish courses in the University like Sociology or Biz Admin because they like it or their friends told them to do it without any research from their own end.

You will finish learning this data science now and start crying all over NL for jobs. You berra use your head.

The price depends on the value of what you are teaching.

Many of these comparisons doesn't make sense. Many of the coders on this platform are unnecessarily loud, I think it’s the excitement that they earn foreign currency. Many people in Nigeria have been making millions for years but now it seems as if coding is the only profession in the to make it big.
Anywhere in the world Doctors generally earns far more than coders.
Nigeria coders makes so much noise because of currency conversion. You're paid 1k or 2k working remotely and that translates to about 500k/1M monthly. In the US that's peanuts but in Nigeria that's some money.
While I encourage anyone who is able to leverage such opportunities but please let's try to avoid senseless comparisons.
Whether you read Medicine, Arts, Science, Social Science or Humanities you can leverage your skills by using remote jobs to earn better than your peers earning locally. A friend read Fine Arts and earns about 4k monthly, English 2k monthly, Math’s 2k monthly, Graphics design 3k monthly, Sociology 2k monthly.
The technology for Doctors to work remotely is not widespread and I don't know if it's in Nigeria. Technologies like Hyperreal holograms, 3D operating rooms, MS Hololens, and Corning's specialty glass are becoming widespread and Covid-19 has caused a surge in telemedicine. In the next few years Doctors living in Nigeria and working remotely will be a norm.
I appreciate coders for their relentless activities and extending the functionalities of technology. While coders can reveal in the moment please avoid unnecessary comparisons.

You are correct about coders being loud and all, this remote work doesn't even excite me, we are leveraging on the fact that the value of our currency is so bad. So i don't see it as a plus because a lot of local companies are stuck with 200k salaries and now they are complaining because they cannot match the pay of foreign tech since their profit is in Naira.

Coding isn't the only profession to make it big, we also need other professions to thrive as well. Being a Doctor should earn you good money anytime, any day.

Some of these people don't tell you the crazy areas about tech or this remote jobs, some of this companies have most terrifying culture. A company like CrossOver for example that monitor your activities, takes your screenshots etc. You have no privacy whatsoever, subject you to crazy inhumane treatments because of dollars.

The interview process in tech is also really nothing to write home about, completely shitty interview process that can take you 7 to 8 rounds of technical + behavioural interviews. At least i have done 7 rounds before and still didn't get the job.

Also if you lose your remote job in tech, you are in panic mode because it may take you months to even smell another remote job.

There's nothing predatory about this. Those apps are meant for people who need small quick loans or urgent ones they can easily repay.

They don't even have stringent measures like banks. Most Nigerians are known to abuse things. Can you read where that guy said he took loans from different apps. He knew he couldn't pay them. The average Nigerian is desperately wicked, that's why things are the way they are.

But, here's the thing I don't have a LinkedIn Profile, I've never had and I'm not sure if I ever will. My CV, cover letter and those two sites are all the tools I use to land interviews/jobs.

Those sites are authentic and they really work. I didn't know anybody or didn't need to know anybody to land a job at the organizations I did. I just followed a process and got there, so never buy into that crap that in Nigeria you need to know someone to get a job,

People evolve though I may change and later create a LinkedIn Profile, but my CV, cover letter are all the tools and they often work for me.

Alright i know some few people who don't have a LinkedIn profile too and they have great jobs. I think it also depends on the kind of jobs.

Some companies, especially big private ones believe in efficiency more than connection or referrals. It gives you self confidence.

One thing i discourage people from is one man company. They usually behave like King Herod.
