Farayolas: thanks Zim drill for the advice but the subwoofer was actually installed by the rewire as you said
then if the capacitor is the right one your sub woofer shouldnt cause an concern they should be running fine

Farayolas: gudevening
pls i run a 90-91 model honda prelude with a non-factory installed airconditioning system and an aftermarket sony subwoofer with sony cd player.
pls do i need to upgrade my alternator to a higher ratings?
for sub woofer you just need a capacitor the capacitor will be the brigde between the sub and battery, the sub at its peak will be getting power from the capacitor, and the capacitor would have stored the required power, than do it direct to the battery and stressing the alternator

your ecu might have been fried he made an amatuer error of running the car with naked wires, high risk of wire making contact to the each other or the car body which is the negative terminal

as for ECU how did you find it out that it was the wrong one ? remember when an ECU is swapped you need to swap with keys as well becoz the keys are programmed to the ECU so in your case it might be the right one but you used the original key to start the car using the ECU you bought, the car wouldnt start becoz the ECU wont recognise your key

bhurlarh: Was driving along a freeway and suddenly the "service engine soon" light came on, all of a sudden the car won't respond to the accelerator and the car begins to drop speed. It moves very slowly and has below 1000 rounds per minute and doesn't go above that when you floor the gas. It starts up and does every other thing normally, but won't accelerate..any idea what could be wrong?
your car has gone into LIMP MODE its means there is something wrong so the car is guards its self by allowing a certain speed/revs to allow you to drive home or to the garage

let the car be scanned results will point to what is wrong

check this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAioPe070_g

the car reached 6000rpm @ 140km/hr then kick down to 4000rpm which is a lower gear and the speed keeps on increasing in that lower gear, it will get to the next gear when speed of the car can be maintained in low revs in this case around 3000 rpm

some automatics got a kick down sensor/switch when you deep the accelator to the flow the transmission ECU changes gear to lower one, giving the car enough power to accelarate

just like you do with manual when you are in 5 and want to accelarate fast you change down to four

and most people dont even want auto becoz more than half of the mechanics can fix manual gearboxes and few specilises in auto gearbox and are expensive

Car TalkRe: My 1999 Toyota Sienna Consumes Fuel..pls I Need Help by ZIMDRILL(m): 10:57pm On Jan 03, 2013
sunylop: I have this Toyota siennna 1999 model , it starts consuming fuel excessively gushing out black smoke, I was advised to change the air flow meter which I did but doesn't solve the problem, my mechanic later cleaned the throttle valve and some other things, the black smoke reduced excessively, but the fuel consumption still very high.
Following the advice on one of the threads on nairaland, I decided to go for scanning which reveals the following codes..:
P0325 - knock sensor 1
P0330 knock sensor 2
P0500 - speed sensor
P0773- transmission shift solenoid
My question now is , Will changing the knocks sensors reduce the fuel consumption?, what of changing the shift solenoid, how does this affect the fuel consumption as well. What do I do now because I don't ve money to waste...pls i just want the gurus to advise me on what to do next...
Thanks very much as I will be waiting for your responses..
those code are only for the auto gearbox they got no links with black smoke, black smoke is most linked with oil, oil must be linking into the engine

bamto: I've heard 'professional drivers' sneer at those who learnt driving, using automatic cars or drive them. They claim automatic cars were designed for the handicapped.
I find such claims laughable. Manual cars are being phased out in developed countries, yet we glory here about driving them.
I tell people I can't buy manual cars or drive them for anything. Why punish myself and live in retrogression? I only drive auto. Big deal?
dont lie to people most car in europe are manuals

its the opposite when you learn to drive with automatic you wont be able to drive a manual but learn to drive with a manual its easy to drive auto the only adjustment is on applying the brakes

ayodeji1: u have said it all.everyone has a right to his/her own privacy.its online thing we are talking about here.the moment u post it,u cant control how fast it spreads.its now left for the prospective buyer to call,or probably visit the owner to get further information to aid u in ur research(thats if u are in doubt).most times, people want to sell their cars for reasons best known to them, but they wouldnt even want their family,or neighbor to know cos they might tag it as something else.whereas u are selling probably to add more money to buy a better car. so its an individual thing.but u cant also rule out the possibility of some hiding it because its a stolen car.and thats why u as a buyer have to ensure u do a proper research on any car you are buying before paying a dime.
still it doesnt make sense either way friends or neighbour will see that you have changed the car or the car is gone

remember you are selling with number plate unless the plate is private, still the plate is public and is it carried by the car where ever you go

Tokotaya: Stray tyres havoc on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

I've heard stories of stray tyres wreaking havoc on speeding vehicles on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Exressway many times, but have never experienced it.

Driving from Berger to Arepo on Friday, I came very close to it.

Just a little after Kara bridge, a huge tyre bounced from the median into the Ibadan-bound traffic. It was of the biggest type, and I had no idea if it was rolled by someone or it came off a speeding trailer.

I was probably doing between 80 and 100kph and had barely passed when it actually landed on the fast lane and rolled across the rest of the lanes.

An unfortunate driver collided with it at full speed, smashing the tyre into shreds and wrecking the entire front of the vehicle. But the driver remained calm and managed to let the car coast to a stop. It could have been worse. A wide swerve would have led the driver to lose control, or he could have run into another fast moving vehicle.

The incident serves as a reminder why a motorist should have his two hands firmly on the wheels, especially when doing anything more than 80kph.

At high speeds, when an emergency occurs, such as an unexpected object bounding towards you, you have only nanoseconds to react. Scrambling the second hand to take necessary action may take most of the nanoseconds needed to save the day.

Yes, you sometimes get weary planting both hands on the steering, and yes, it is cool driving with one hand on the steering while planting the second hand on the car window. But an emergency does not serve a prior notice and it could make the difference between life and death.
http://johnaweonline..com/2012/12/stray-tyres-havoc-on-lagos-ibadan.html
i thinks its not about two hands being on the wheel but the reaction remember whatever happens the 1st reaction is to grap the wheel with both hands then its up the reaction you do that will determine the direction of the car you either swave too much instead of just a bit, some people freeze

its about the reaction whether by one hand or both
Car TalkRe: Pls Advise Me by ZIMDRILL(m): 11:18am On Dec 23, 2012
jjgirljay: I got a car from one of the dealers in surulere on the 11th of this month, the day I took the car I realize it was over heating,I parked called the dealer and he sent hi boy to me and promise to deliver the car to me the next day. He gave me the excuse of the car been parked for so long, two days later at night d dealer called me to say my car was on my way to me,I had to rush out of where I was to go meet them half way,on seeing the car dashboard I notice the temp was half way and I complained,it's night and this is not right,he told me he's been in traffic and because the car has a big engine. From my orintel to leaking 1 just after the toll gate the car was over heating badly,I had to park and called the dealer.
He seem all shocked and told me the first person who bought this same car had the problem and its been regulated to our temperature in Nigeria. Unlucky for him the said footballer who got the same car is a friend I called him and he explained to me that the car had never been good. I have about three people who has had problem with the guy,he never sells good cars and will ask you to go to court. As much as I want my money back,I don't want him to be able to continue with this act.

He called me to ask what other car do I want,I told him what I wanted and he asked me to come to his office to come and sign a note saying that I would not change my mind when the car comes,I got to the office,he's drafted two agreement, one stating that I brought the said car I got for him to sell and when he sells it I will pay 5percent of the amount sold to him and another new agreement stating that I wanted him to bring me a car and will pay 30percent now and 70percent when he delivers the car. I rejected both agreement.

This said car dealer is a lawyer and says the law will settle us,I know how court case are.
My dad says I should go to efcc but am not sure if they handle civil
This dealer shouldn't get away with this and my magazine and most of the auto talk show are ready to support me.

Kindly advice what my chance are on this case.
did the temperature shot to red mark or it was just in the middle? on some cars the middle is the average 88-90 range and thats normal

if it shot to red then get your money back s/he failed to deliver a driveable car
Car TalkRe: Does Erasing Error Codes With The Scanner Solve The Initial Problem?? by ZIMDRILL(m): 11:13am On Dec 23, 2012
lacasa: Hello auto-gurus in da hse, smiley

Took my 2005 accord 4cyl for a general scan and the result came up with 6 error codes sad

But, to my suprise the mechanic erased 3 out of 6 codes leaving 3 codes on the scanner. Then he said the remaining 3 error codes had to be attended to. undecided

Now, what i wanna кnoω is, does merely erasing a code solve the issue or huh?.

2ndly, after the scan was done and codes erased, the engine idle dropped soo low that the engine vibrates especially with the ac on.

Any eplanation for thishuh

(Would appreciate yr replies, thanks.)
codes tell you want need to be attended on the car its a straight way to the problem that trail and error

clearing codes wont solve the problem, will will pop up again if the issue has not been solved

there is something s/he touched that made the idle drop clearing a code wont affect idling
Car TalkRe: My Car, Nissan Altima '00, Does Not Start Immediately After Buying Fuel by ZIMDRILL(m): 7:02pm On Dec 22, 2012
Siena: ^^^ Does this occur if you fill the tank from almost empty? If you add more fuel, and you've got let's say a quarter of a tank left, do you still get the same hard-start issues?
the reason seina asked this question is that, if you refill after the car has gone far beyond its reserve tank it ends up pumping dirt from the bottom of the tank inside and it clogs your bump hence you end up such problems but if the problem occurs even at quarter tank it is either the pump is dying slowly or its the fuel OCTANE check for one meant for your car

but also fuel pressure has to be checked and also the regulator

octane rating on fuel pump

Car TalkRe: How Does The Use Of Car AC Affect Fuel Consumption? by ZIMDRILL(m): 10:59am On Dec 21, 2012
Midas02: Tundysho,
You can be rest assured that using your AC will always result in lower gas mileage (using more gas). It is simply a fact that using your AC imposes some extra load on your engine and the engine responds by consuming more gas. Do not be dismayed however, lots of things can equally make a car use more gas! - Low tire pressure, poor maintenance, poor aerodynamics, driving up hilly terrain, aggressive driving and even carrying more passengers!. The purpose of buying a car is to enjoy the conveniences and comfort that the car gives you so I definitely would expect AC to be used, extra passengers will ride and hilly terrains will be encountered - that is life!! The most practical mitigations I can suggest is to avoid unnecessary aggressive & racy driving (high revving acceleration), check and maintain your tire pressures at about 40psi all around and make sure you do your oil change and tune ups when due.

Kuntash,
I watched the same episode of Mythbusters and I believe you got the gist wrong. (Season 2 Episode 22)
The objective was to see IF a car with the AC turned on and the glass rolled up, WOULD consume more gas OR less gas than the same car would if the AC were turned off and the windows rolled down. They actually used a Ford Expedition for the experiment and took steps to ensure that all conditions were consistent on a closed circuit track.
Anyhow, the scientific logic was to see if the aerodynamic improvements gained by rolling up windows could neutralize the higher gas consumption imposed by using AC on one hand. And on the other hand, would the better economy achieved by not using AC be negated by the increased drag (reduced aerodynamics) due to rolling windows down.
The conclusion was that despite the aerodynamic edge, the car with the AC on still used more gasoline at certain speed - 45mph and below!. At higher speeds - 55mph and above, it is more efficient to use AC and roll up glass.  So for guys who want to know, it is far more efficient to use your AC at highway speeds - (55mph or 90km/h and above)
i too so that episode and i knew the results before they even started

if you want to find out with out figures just switch on your car in quiet place listen while it idle then ask a friend to help you by turning the AC while you watch and listen to the engine, the moment you turn the AC the engine will increase ravs a bit and shake a bit that means the load as changed on engine

just remember AC motor is run by the engine then the blower motor also wants power from battery through altanator

folushowil: Good morning peeps, I drive a mazda 3 2005 and noticed that the ac started making a whining sound when switched on, it was still cooling well. I got a technician to look at it and he said the compressor is faulty and this was caused by a bad condenser. He's suggesting replacing the present radiator with a double cell radiator which I dnt agree with. Can anyone please recommend an ac technician who knows his job and doesn't do the usual "double cell solution" as is common with other technicians. Also, can the condenser be repaired.

Thanks.
whining is caused by a worn out bearing, why would the radiator cause the whining ?
Car TalkRe: Please Help, My Volkswagen Touareg Is Acting Funny by ZIMDRILL(m): 7:17pm On Dec 09, 2012
tondifari: Dear siena, I am an avid follower of your comments on this thread. my details are as follows:-

Make: Volkswagen
Model: Touareg
Engine size: 4.2L, V8
Transmission Type: 6 speed tiptronic
Model year: 2003
Specification: U.S
Drive Configuration: 4WD

I bought this car as tokunbo in march 2012. Since then I have had cause to change the brake pads twice the upper and lower arms and the back arms but the car still makes noise when i encounter gallops. However the major problems I have now are as follows:-
(1)Transmission (Gear).
The car refuses to engage gear from (P)park to (N)neutral or (D)drive occassionally. Normally this happens five days to a week after a red warning sign appears on the dashboard. The sign reads thus " BRAKE. BRAKE FAULT STOP VEHICLE". YOU NEED TO CHECK LEAKAGE IN THE BREAK PIPES OR THE MASTER CYLINDER THE SEAL MIGHT HAVE GONE AND ITS LOSSING THE BRAKE FLUID WITH MOST AUTOMATIC YOU HAVE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKES TO SHIFT FROM PARK TO NEUTRAL SINCE THE BRAKE SYSTEM IS FAULTY NO SIGNAL IS BEING SENT TO RELEASE THE LEVER SO IT WONT RELEASE BE ALSO CHECK THE BRAKE SWITCH OR JUST CHECK THE LEVEL OF THE FLUID This has happened about four times since purchase. Each time I have to wait for my mechanic to come and 'scan' and "reprogram' the vehicle before I can move. I have changed the transmission oil recently to no avail. Other yellow signs that are permanently on the dashboard are ABS -- SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE SENSOR GET A PROPER OBDII IT SHOULD ABLE TO TELL YOU WHICH SENSOR OF THE FOUR WHEELS, Exhaust system malfunction -- THIS I MIGHT BE A EGR VALVE FOR 02 SENSORS A SCAN WILL TELL, Airbag fault --- THIS NEEDS A RESET, ESP malfunction --- SCAN WILL TELL YOU WHATS REALLY WRONG. Can any of this unresolved issues cause this embarrassing problem?. ROUGHLY YOUR MECHANIC DOESNT HAVE A OBDII TOOL TO SCAN THAT SIMPLE WARNS SIGNS ONLY THE ABS AND AIR BAG ARE TRICKY BECOZ A BASIC OBDII WONT BE ABLE TO SCAN AND RESET
Again the vehicles movement seems epileptic whenever it comes out of lagos traffic. The mechanic had to top up the transmission oil with almost seven litres of 'Holt' Atf. He says the fibre seems burnt and is soaking up the oil. What do you think?
(2)Engine
I noticed after a recent trip lagos - abuja - aba - lagos that the engine oil was totally short when i dipped the next morning( not showing on the dipping stick). My mechanic has confirmed that there is no leakage but that two plugs are soaked. He has changed them and the car is moving normally. Does this confirm my worst fears?. The mileage is just 79,000km.
(3)Shaft?
Occasionally on turning fully i hear sharp noises 'pum pum' as if the tire wants to pull out. But when i return the steering the noise ceases and the car moves normally. My mechanic removed the two front tyres to check the suspension etc and he claims everything is intact. What do you think.? -- CHECK ALL BUSHES OFF THE SUSPENSION
(4) Front Light
My head lamps are weak and i cannot drive comfortably at night. My mechanics have changed the bulbs and the setting but the result is the same. He is suggesting I may need to buy the 'charging" system. is he correct? NO CHARHING SYSTEM NEED AND THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THAT CHECK THE VOLTAGE COMING TO LIGHTS IT SHOULD 12VOLTS AND ALSO CHECK HOW CLEAR IS THE LENS ITS SELF ARE THE LIGHT FULL BEAM AND DIPPED WHEN YOU DRIVE AT NIGHT?
I look forward to your response. Thanks

what are the chance of a instrument cluster bulbs being blown ? i have never came across a blown indicator light in the dashboard, mind you they one work everyday and on every turn of the car

its easy to see if the circuit has been tampered with, when you turn on the accesories, position 2 all light should come one then some switch off after few seconds

ask yourself does the car manufacturer no less than your merchanic he thinks the toyota people got it wrong by putting a single cell radiator

aslong the radiator is not leaking and not blocked and the has right amount of cooliant and thermo working fine, your car should run fine with that single cell radiator
