TravelRe: Lagos-Ibadan Train: NRC Spends More On Diesel Daily, Running At A Loss by COMPAQ(m):
Funny enough I only travelled on this train for the first time today and I can see why they are not making a profit. The train station in lagos had provision for leasing out space for shops which isn't being done, so that's a revenue loss.

They also have too many staff doing nothing. This is paying salaries for no reason. Extremely low productivity is a bane of the Nigerian public sector. Unnecessary expense.

Sales of ticket is also purely manual. Cutting paper ticket from a pamphlet is so old school! Even if it isn't online at least they should have point of sale machines that print tickets. The current system is prone to fraud as anyone can print his own pamphlet of tickets. Revenue loss.

I can also imagine that the train conductors inboard are running their own racket.

Interiors of the train stations are also excellent opportunities for digital advertising. Even the interiors of the train. Revenue loss.

Also diesel should hopefully eventually come down quite abut if crude oils prices stabilise at around $80. Diesel should settle at about N600 or N650 at that stage, maybe even less. That will boost profits in the future. Besides electric trains is an option in the future.

TravelRe: Mixed Reaction Trail FG's Choice Of Ethiopian Airlines As National Carrier by COMPAQ(m): 12:26pm On Sep 23, 2022
PROUDIGBO:
Had Air Peace been owned by Dangote, there wouldn’t have been much discussion as to who the national carrier would be! And if the couldn’t find any Fulani oligarch, then their next choice would reluctantly be to look for a Yoruba…one who’s ‘friendly’ enough and can play ball!

Look what they did with the 5G licenses recently auctioned. One would have expected that naturally the biggest players in the industry (MTN, GLO, Airtel, etc) would be the winners of the bid. But besides MTN winning, the next and only other winner was an unknown new entrant into the industry…..MAFAB! I suspected it was owned by the northern hegemony/oligarchs, and my suspicions were confirmed a few days ago when i saw who the owner was. Most likely he’s a front for more powerful and wealthy northern interests! Saw a news report few weeks back that MTN has now commenced its roll-out of 5G operations in selected parts of the country, while MAFAB hasn’t and has been given more time. You see how nepotism and other primordial considerations draws this country back?

I’ve always said fear who no fear these people! Their major aim, right from the mid 60s to date, is to control ALL the commanding heights of the Nigerian political-economy! And they have a well coordinated and ruthless operation that ensures their grip on Nigeria is not weakened in any way! Obviously, part of this script would have to entail sabotaging or undermining southern (esp’ Igbo) interests, as on a level playing field, they can’t compete.

Had Azman or Max Air been as big or bigger than Air Peace, they would have been a shoo-in to be considered as national carrier!
But why didn't Glo and Airtel bid sufficiently high! it was a very transparent process. The highest bidders won simple!! I can understand your cynicism given this is Nigeria, but it doesn't apply in all situations. Your shoo in statement on AirPeace and Azman may not apply because they would need to have applied first. The article CLEARLY stated that only Ethiopian Airlines applied. Not surprising given how terrible the government is with keeping its side of contracts and agreements. Besides how can airlines with zero international experience want to be our National Carrier? Seems weird to me.

Exactly! What we need is something that works! If we are not capable at the moment, then so be it. Until we become capable by ourselves, let the next capable person handle it.

All the things we tried to do for ourselves as government, we messed it all up!!

Is it not a big shame and national embarrassment that Nigeria-the so called giant of Africa is soliciting to have the sophisticated Ethiopian Airlines as its national carrier?

Same Ethiopian Airlines that was formed just in the last two decade. Nigeria Airways crumbled. Nigerian National Shipping Line(NNSL) also crumbled. NNPC is a cesspool of endless corruption while the Nigerian Railway Corporation is struggling to breath.

Air Peace was more like a national carrier during the COVID-19 pandemic but parochial interest will not allow the FG to consider it for this role. Meanwhile, after all the lies of investors desperately bidding to be stakeholders by Lai Mohammed, only Ethiopian Airlines was the only interested party? Lie telling Is a disease.
Shame and embarrassment or not, that is our current reality! We are grossly incompetent for whatever reason. All the firms you listed there and many more have failed over time, so its clear we lack the vision, discipline and operational capabilities to run complex businesses. Even most of the fine dinning and classy restaurants in Lagos are owned and run by Lebanese.

The only one we know how to run is where you just put table and chair outside and serve drinks and pepper soup/nkwobi.

Air Peace is birthed from corruption and will be killed by corruption eventually, similar to Arik Air. Give me Ethopian Airlines anyday.

The only very bad thing I noticed is the inferiority mentality, the queen is good, some white are good, but we failed to realize that they have many bad people too, we were respecting all of them like gods, the bad ones tends to take advantage of us, and they were Soo good at their evil.

I still see the inferiority mentality in even our youth nowadays, you see restaurants treating them like a special human being or something. But, the fact still remains the same, no one was forced to look inferior, or see them as superior beings.

Cargo is the manstay of most rail lines around the world. i cant say for certain that Lagos Ibadan( on to Kano when eventually built) would make a profit, but worst case the loss will be far less.

Focus on cargo is the way to go!

Better still to get there quickly, the train service should be privatized. Let the government retain control of the tracks as its contribution to Nigerians, while the locomotives are taken over by the private sector who pay to use the tracks. Similar to how airlines and airports are.

You have no economic sense.
High Demand lowers Cost of a Service.
That's why it costs less to fly from Europe to America than from Europe to Africa.
The largest business route in Nigeria is Lagos-Benin-Onitsha-PH/Calabar route.
High patronage lowers price, and operational costs.
That's why those luxury buses that ply the above route have survived more than the luxury buses that ply the SW-North route.
High demand without competition increases cost. What reduces cost is competition, not demand. Ideally with high demand, all other things constant prices go up not down. Why does Uber do surge pricing when demand is high?

europe to America flight is cheap because competition is high. Almost every country in Europe has its own airline. This past summer with lots of Americians and europeans wanting to travel for the first time since covid, air ticket prices went up because of high demand and limited capacity.

Go and relearn your economics.

When demand for Lagos Onitsha bus or flight is high at Xmas, do prices go up or down??

Not sure where we all get this thing that train is cheaper! How cheap again if Lagos to Ibadan is N2500!!?

Just last week I took a train from London to Bournemouth and back and it cost me GBP70!

The problem is not the cost of the service, but rather that incomes in Nigeria are too low for the vast majority. Having said that I think there are enough people who can afford N5k return trip to Ibadan. After all, even bus from Ojota is like N2k and its always full. We just haven't been conditioned to take trains yet. If petrol becomes N600, maybe that will get people to divert to the train.

interesting even with Cargo traffic the rails are running at a loss. I'm not surprised about passengers rail considering they subsidize below market value like other things.
I'm not sure there is any material cargo on those trains yet.

But I always said that doing train service for passenger traffic rarely makes a profit anywhere in the world. The focus should have been on cargo all the while, but the government was marketing it as a passenger train - maybe to get votes.

The service can never do well if it remains in government hands. If it were in private hands it will either have a much smaller loss or make a profit. The marketing would be more, they would have leased commercial space at the station, reduced service to aggregate more customers into the available trains for more profit per train, offer value added services like internet at a small cost, reduced wasted manpower (why should tickets still be sold manually by 10 people, when you can do it over the internet like flights and have just 2 people at the station - saving salaries of 8 people), switch to electric or gas engines to save ridiculous cost of diesel and so on and so forth.

Point is that anything in government hands can never be run efficiently!! Now we have entered into another subsidy regime! We left kerosene and electricity and entered train.

I remember predicting this thing ...years back .. infrastructure doesn't really kick start development it complement it this was what Peter Obi was arguing with osibanjo in 2019 now see the results

Speed rails are too expensive to run can never break even in a country as poor as we for now !!!!
What we needed was effective locomotive rail from Ibadan to the ports in Lagos to move containers

$150 million would have achieved that

Their is a rail from warri to lokoja ...it should have been locomotive from warri port to Abuja , with branch off to Onitsha and imo state
From onne to aba then to Enugu then to Jos and Maiduguri
All the Above can be achieved with 600 million dollars max if we have an effective government

1.5 billion dollars wasted I mean over 1 trillion Naira

If proforce and innoson where given 100 billion each to expand production they would have employed twice what this rail line would employ

1 billion to 100 cocoa clusters to build cocoa processing plants ban exportation of raw cocoa we only export cocoa powder and butter with would double value in a taxable business

This are the simple things Peter Obi is talking about ...we don't have much but we can effectively use what we have better

So today it's obvious Peter Obi was right osibanjo was wrong ....won't you still vote Peter Obi ?
What we have are very normal trains and not speed trains!! i hear the Lagos Ibadan does about 80km/hr. I can drive faster than that. What is speed about that when REAL speed trains in Europe are doing 300+km/h

Not every MDA is meant to be revenue generating! Some are there for safety and to serve the publics interests, and so that should not necessarily be the basis for scrapping.

However having said that, I 100% believe that we have way too many MDA's and most of them need to go.

The NASs should also be warned from indiscriminately creating agencies. This idea that we need an agency for all of our problems is a lazy approach. Often all that is required is just a department in the relevant ministry. A new agency requires office, new equipment, more unnecessary staff, vehicles, etc and just creates more cost and bureaucracy.
