Education › Re: How Do I Improve My Spoken English? I Need Your Advice Please!!! by KosiGee(m):
cutegentility:
I think my vocabulary and my spoken English are not enough.

They said bad English most often but fellow countrymen will have decoded it sharply. It is the choice of word(diction) that varies as a result of culture and geographical location. I think one should have basic insight of life in the western world.
Let me site some examples to pass my points effectively.

We are experiencing harmattan during this period therefore we say: "It is a dry season".

But to them it is either Winter,Autumn, Spring or Summer.

Fellow country men will have understand 9PM or AM

But to some they will ask for digital time like 24 hour clock because some don't even understand PM or AM.

I agree with what our fellow nairalanders opined that I should endeavour to watching foreign movies and to also listen to foreign music, reading novels etc .
I think understanding many English synonyms will also help the situation at hand because they barely use some words we often use on a daily basis in this part of the world.
You should work on your linguistic skills to develop yourself not to impress or satisfy your fake friends.
If your friend’s observations/complaints were based on the above instances, I think they have low self esteems and inferiority complexes.

It is good to know the four seasons but they don’t apply in Nigeria and I will use dry season or harmattan anytime, any day. Apart from winter and summer, you’d be surprised that not a lot of people know the difference between autumn and spring and which one of them comes first.

It’s Harmattan or dry season in Nigeria, tell them that or any non Nigerian and let them figure it out themselves or relate that to whatever season that they have. Stop bending to people and don’t allow them to be bullying you.

I don’t think there’s any hard and fast rule on using the pm/am and the 24 hour rule except you are working in security but tell your friends to stop harassing you about that, I’m sure even the ogas at the tops of those security outfits won’t be this pedantic. If they/your fake friends are working as door supervisors somewhere and have adapted to that mode of time telling, tell them not to take out their frustrations on you after a hard day’s job.

Tell them it’s a new year, tell them day don break for Naija, tell them 7 don nack, tell them Harmattan de and the North East trade wind de blow and scatter like no man’s business.

Eboe man has development coded in his gene?

What did the Eboe achieve before Nigeria was created

Not One TOWN existed in Eboe land before Nigeria was created

Eboe never evolved any form of political organization beyond village/Umunna poltics

Eboes were sold as slaves by smaller groups like Ijaws and Efiks

That same boastfulness is what you manifest here

Tell us the achievement of the Eboe before Nigeria to warrant your boastful nonsense

You were slaves of the Ijaw and Efik
I’m not here to argue with someone filled with negative energies. You won’t infect me sir. Jog on and look for your type.

The Eboe man's mind set is very simple

He is envious and covetous

He wants to be number one whether he deserves it or not
If someone else is in front and not Eboe then it is not deserved

Akintola saw this
Ahmadu Bello saw this

That is how they managed the Eastern Region till the minorities revolted

They tried to impose their way of life on the Ikwerres and they were dealt a bitter blow when the war ended with the abandoned propert saga
Akintola and Ahmadu Bello were paranoid and probably schizophrenic. Their utterances were toxic and unacceptable.

The Igbo man has self development coded in his gene. Bello said that an Igbo man would want to rise from being a junior worker to a supervisor. How is that a bad trait. History will vindicate the Igbo man. Life is not boring with him. He wants to rise and update himself because he believes in his ability which is being suppressed by mediocrity. Why would anyone not want to give such an individual a chance if he is qualified and suited for the position?

You are one of those misrepresenting facts because of your personal and induced acrimony with the Igbos. You can’t spend the rest of your life fighting an unnecessary war. It will drain you bro.

The op and another poster said that Yorubas are not concerned with other ethnicities rather with what is going on in their states...even in Nairaland!! I wanted to comment but thought it was useless engaging in a meaningless argument, however when someone like you who has spent a significant amount of time on here typing and posting falsehood and provocative views then that’s bad. The same goes to other mentally disturbed posters from the south east.

No bridge will collapse just media noise by some Ignorant beings, I am fully aware that turnaround maintenance of River Niger Bridge was completed before general election 2015 weak metals and bolts and others were changed on the bridge
If cars, HGVs and articulated vehicles are made to park on the bridge due to artificial hold up created by police check point at the entrance or at the foot of the bridge, no matter how structurally sound the bridge might be, it is very wrong and an emergency situation that should be dealt with.

The warning by this Dr. Orji should not be ignored.

Please post the picture of your Igbo village on this thread.

This thread is for villages and related discussions only.

If the unnecessary banters continue, the thread will be flooded and ruined with eyesore photos of environmental disasters.

You haven’t told us the name of your village btw and you haven’t spelt the town of Agbudu correctly.

When Yorubas come here to scream " go back to your caves" simply because they themselves have not ventured out of their villages, I just laugh.

My village has electricity, phone network, urban, notable men and women, civilized and accommodating.

My village is Umuakuru Emekuku Owerri. It's good to be home!
You ruined this beautiful thread by your mentioning of ‘Yorubas asking you to leave’ statement. It’s not necessary.

IgboSomalia:
The funny thing with you Igbos is that you keep insulting others but when others retaliate in kind, the entire Ohaneze would start crying.

This is how they insulted northerners before they were given quit notice. That was when I knew Igbos understood Hausa very well. Come and see Igbo Chiefs and Professors begging those they called illiterates in the North. Imagine the entire Ohaneze begging Al Mustapha.
You are a pathological liar, a retard and probably suffering some mental health problem.

Igbos did not insult northerners. Nnamdi Kanu whom many Igbos disapprove of and criticise has made some derogatory remarks. His views do not, will not and has never reflected the views of millions of Igbos.

Some group of individuals from the north made some provocative statement about Igbos and I’m sure that their statement didn’t reflect that of the entire north.

Whatever faults Ohaneze as a group might have, they never begged the idiots who asked Igbos to leave the northern part of Nigeria.

Stop spreading falsehood online. Groups of Igbos who mainly reside in the North met with some some leaders in the north concerning the development. Some governors came out to dissociate themselves from the group and assured non northerners of their security and safety.

Ohaneze did not beg anyone. Nwodo did not beg. Several individuals and groups called for calms and peace. No group was begged.

Admission should be the responsibility of the BSU admissions board. Ortom is not the VC of the university and even if he was, he should not be imposing a student on them. There should be an admission process that should be followed.

It’s a nice gesture offering the girl scholarship but he shouldn’t be interfering on the admission process of the university.

Definitely going to be obvious the car was resprayed. You need to realise that the factory paint conditions is near difficult to re-create.
That is not true, except you are dealing with Berger second hand car sellers.

Those cars would be worked on and re-sprayed with the exact paint colour used originally.

I hope you are a real colonel. I pray that woman is skinned alive. Yes skinned alive. She is heartless and very wicked. Take a look at that little girl, she’s malnourished and full of bruises. How can a human being treat a vulnerable child this way.

I was angry that the video guy didn’t intervene but I have to congratulate him as his recording helped to nail this evil woman.

She is too violent to have kids around her. In a sane society, she’d be in jail and would have no contacts with children.

To be honest Igbo people are very philantrophic.
This is not philanthropy. It’s strictly business and at N300k per room or per student?? This should not be celebrated. I think this man is taking advantage of Obiano’s government to make money off students.

N300k would be quite a chunk for the students.

When I saw the thread title, I thought that he built and donated the building to the school. He and his missus are no philanthropists. They are business people.
How much did they pay for the 70 plots of land. This is good for the government though. I’d make sure that he doesn’t default on his taxes if I was Anambra internal revenue office.

I believe he stated that they send her to school and provide all her needs. How does that make her a slave? The term house help doesn't mean it's a crime to unofficially adopt kids and provide for them while they render support in the home. If that's the case then all children are house helps in their own homes
Define “all her needs”. They provide for all her needs but she’s about to spend Christmas without ‘Christmas clothes’. It’s like robbing a kid in Europe the joy of Christmas present. Do you have any idea what those means to children??

That child is a nanny, carer, teacher, cleaner and nurse rolled into one.
Are you aware that the only time they get a break from all the abuses is when they get away from the house and go to school??

Do you know how much carers earn per hour? Do you have any idea how much pains that child and all children in her situation go through?

I am sure you saw the apostrophe symbol in the "woman"? Or is it that you don't know what it means?

2. A 15 year old is a teenager, an adolescent and not a child. And 15 year old get pregnant in case you don't know. Also do know that at age 15 some people are already done with secondary school, including some of my siblings.

3. Being a relative of madam is one reason the wife may be suspicious. It would have been different if she was his own relative.

Like I said earlier, a 15 year old is not a CHILD! Yes, OP may not be having affair with her but Madam isn't comfortable with her around anymore. Get the message!

I am a guy but I understand madam's angle!
Tonye, you are a respected nairalander but what you wrote up there and all your comments on this particular thread are embarrassing and silly.

You are a potential child abuser from the nonsense that you typed up there. A 15 year old is still a child mister, if she can get pregnant according to your warped cognition, so can lots of 10 year olds, even some 9 year old.

Adults or couple supporting the use of children as House helps should be tagged and barred from coming into contacts with children.

For the bully and vile woman who wants to rob a child of the joy of Christmas, I hope she be paid back. That child need to be taken back to her parents. She will have no joy in that family.

The abuse she suffers today might be transmitted to the poor kids that she’s been forced to look after. There should be a cctv in that house before bad things start happening.

A 15 year old is not just a child, she’s a baby and should not be forced to undertake adult responsibilities.
