ecolime: Have you seen this actress in person? No let pictures and camera filters deceive you.
You know how many shots Stephanie took to get these picture-perfect ones?
Let your partner breathe abeg I had the privilege to see her physically more than once, and I was struck by her beauty, intelligence, and politeness. Seeing her at an event, I took advantage of the opportunity to take pictures with her. My photographer was taking too much time to set up his equipment, but to my surprise, she was very patient and understanding. Her body language did not show any signs of frustration or impatience. I have met a mere grassroot celebrity who is very cocky and arrogant, but despite Stephenie's fame and success, she is very humble. To be honest, she is even more beautiful in real life. I remember discussing her appearance with my friends the first time I saw her, but she is not just one of those actresses who rely solely on their beauty or make a big deal of it. She has a great reputation for her work and is respected both in Nigeria and abroad. Just take a closer look at her filmography, and you will appreciate her even more. There are so many movie producers in Nigeria, but how many of them have produced meaningful movies that have been recognized internationally or had a significant impact on the Nigerian movie industry? |

placeofallure: No, that's not you thinking outside the box. It's you mixing things up.
This is it. When you talk about some pronouns being subjective or objective in nature, this division has to do only with personal pronouns.
When you use 'her' within the context - Her book is on the table, then you have used 'her' as a possessive pronoun. It's no longer functioning as a personal pronoun. We have other types of pronouns apart from Personal and Possessive pronouns like: Reflexive, Relative, Demonstrative, Reciprocal, Indefinite, Interrogative and more. A word (pronoun) may belong to several groups of pronouns depending on its function in the sentence. E.g. The pen which you gave me has been broken - Relative Which of these pens is yours? Interrogative
In grammar, you don't consider words in isolation, you may end up commiting blunders. Check out the contextual meaning of the words before you draw your inferences. Thank you. You are misunderstanding my point. The fact that some objective pronouns can function as other pronouns is what I am driving at and I already explained that some objective pronouns can function as other pronouns in my previous comment. Don't look at it from our own perspective because in Nigeria, English is our official language and it is widely spoken. Many people are already accustomed to speaking English, and some don't even know the rules of English but can speak it properly. Look at it from a non-English speaker's perspective. You cannot simply tell a non-English speaker that objective pronouns fall under personal pronouns and cannot be used to begin a sentence without further explaining that some objective pronouns can also fall under other groups of pronouns and be used to start a sentence. Merry100: It is not impossible to use objective pronouns to begin a sentence in certain contexts; however, it is generally better to avoid using objective pronouns, especially those that do not also belong to subjective pronouns. They are neither necessary nor easy to use, so we can just construct them for fun activities such as this one.
Objective pronouns are: It (also a subjective pronoun) Me Us You (also a subjective pronoun) Her (also a possessive pronoun) Him Them Whom (also an interrogative pronoun)
How can "them" be considered impossible to use to begin a sentence simply because it is an objective pronoun? That is not a logical explanation. "Whom," "her," and "him" are also objective pronouns, yet they can be used to begin a sentence in certain formal contexts.
Examples: * Whom did you give my money to? * Her house is on fire. * Her books were later found inside the house. * Him in their house, just acting like a chef to deceive them, is not fair.
In conclusion There are several types of pronouns, and some objective pronouns also fall within another group of pronouns. That might be why it is possible to use them to start a sentence. |

You have more time to focus on your personal growth and plan for your future. You have more money because you have fewer expenses. You have more freedom to make your own decisions without having to consider anyone else. You have less stress and more time to socialize and enjoy yourself because you don't have to worry about a partner or children. |

placeofallure: Grammatically, by structure, you can't start a sentence with the word 'them' There are two sets of the personal pronouns - The subject pronouns and the object pronouns. The subject pronouns indicate who or what the sentence is talking about. Also, it shows who acts in the sentence. They are: I, he,she, you, we, they and it. Any of these pronouns can start a sentence. E.g. Jeff and Sally played basketball after school. (They) My mum and I enjoyed gardening. (We) The mountainside is covered in blue flowers. (It)
The object pronouns receive the action done by the subject and they're found in the predicate. E.g. Failing the test was the worst thing that could happen to Janet. (Her) A huge rock rolled down the hill and nearly hit John and me. (Us) This instruction manual belongs with the TV set. (It)
Going by the aforementioned dear OP, to begin a sentence with 'them' is ungrammatical. This is the basic explanation that teachers possibly give to students, but let's think outside the box. "Her" is an objective pronoun, but we can easily start a sentence with it. For example: Her book is on the table. |
Romance › Re: As A Lady, Which Would You Go For by Merry100: 1:07pm On Sep 22, 2023 |
Gafferde: Which would you prefer?
I pay your bride price, have an indoor traditional celebration between your family and mine, and then proceed to court marriage.
No Asoebi. No white wedding. No feeding of a community of strangers. Not any of those frivolities.
And then the next day we are on our way to any place on earth of your choice for our honeymoon and when we get back there’s a car gift waiting for you and a check of millions for the expansion of your business and another check for any of your parents or siblings who may be looking for money to establish their business.
Or —
We burn over 20 million Naira on glamorous traditional and white wedding celebrations and ensure it’s the talk of the town. You will have your dozens of bridesmaids and I have my dozens of groomsmen.
You will have your bridal shower and our suya night at a 5 Star Hotel and at our parties, we will let our parents invite different dance groups that we will fund and let them use us to pepper their perceived rivals and all of that….
After the few hours that all this waste will last, we will go home and spend the night thinking about the millions we wasted and wake up the next morning with long faces and none of the long-lasting benefits that come with the first option.
You continue to jump from one office to another searching for a job and using Okada, Taxi, or Keke whenever the man is not available to take you to where you are going.
Please, choose one! This too is the option I will give to anyone I would consider getting married to and only one answer there will work for me. 🤔 None of the above. |

Allthelight: why will i say that ? Expect i say something like
Them is not used to start a sentence.
In the above them becomes a noun not a pronoun
Or them is the only word in that sentence like
Them ! or them ? why them ? "Them" is a pronoun. It is used to refer to a group of people or things. In my sentences, "them" is the subject of the verb phrase, indicating who or what is performing the action. The rest of the sentence provides additional information about this group of people. Therefore, "them" is used correctly as a pronoun in my sentences. I understand that there is a possibility that I am wrong, because sometimes English doesn't even follow its own rules. But either there is a more logical explanation, or it is specifically stated that "them" cannot be used at the beginning of a sentence. |

Allthelight: There is no possible way i have read your examples.
In this case expect "them" is not a pronoun but a noun instead since nouns can be any word. Example an abbreviation What do you mean by in this case "them" is not a pronoun? Do you mean that a pronoun cannot begin a sentence? |

Most of us only know the basics of English. I am not an English teacher, but the sentences I provided seem correct to me. There is more than one English rule pointing to the fact that it is possible to use "them" to start a sentence. I wish a very knowledgeable English professor could shed more light on this, like a professor from Harvard, Oxford, or Cambridge, not our usual English teachers that only know to an extent. |

Also, it's "good at English" in this context, not 'good in English'" So you can give the OP your own examples to showcase the exceptions. I am not an English teacher o, but I just felt it can work and I have already given it a try. |

Allthelight: Your examples are wrong Except "them" is the only word in that sentence it can't be correct.
Like "them!" Yes, them is an objective case pronoun, not a subjective case pronoun, so in general, "them" cannot be used at the beginning of a sentence. However, there are some exceptions, such as when the pronoun "them" is used as the subject of a gerund phrase. A gerund phrase is a verb phrase that ends in -ing and functions as a noun. In this case, the gerund phrase can be the subject of the sentence, while the pronoun "them" is the subject of the gerund phrase. For example, the sentence "Them playing in the garden is fun to watch" is correct because "them playing in the garden" is a gerund phrase that functions as the subject of the sentence and the pronoun "them" is the subject of the gerund phrase. |

etrange: In sentence one, "them" is used as the subject of the verb "ventured". This is wrong cause it's an object pronoun and can never perform the grammatical function of a subject pronoun. Note that the nearby expression "the brave explorers" is a appositive noun phrase that only adds extra details.
In sentence two, "them" is used as the subject of the verb "perched". This is wrong cause it's an object pronoun and can never perform the grammatical function of a subject pronoun. Note that the nearby expression "the the colorful birds" is a appositive noun phrase that only adds extra details.
In sentence two, "them" is used as the subject of the verb "perched". This is wrong cause it's an object pronoun and can never perform the grammatical function of a subject pronoun. Note that the nearby expression "the old books in the dusty library" is a appositive noun phrase that only adds extra details.
Appositives only serve to provide more details about a noun or a pronoun. A sentence should still be correct without them. Now, let's try removing the parts I identified as appositive noun phrases in your sentences and see if the they are correct.
1. Them ventured deep into the uncharted jungle, seeking hidden treasures. 2.Them perched high in the treetops, filling the forest with their melodious songs. 3.Them held secrets and stories from centuries past, waiting to be discovered.
As you can see, they're all wrong. That's because only a subject pronoun can be used be as the subject of a verb. In this case, that would be "they".
@OP, while such contructs might not be uncommon in old English, I believe they're only found in poetry today. Also, it's "good at English" in this context, not "good in English".
You're correct, but those are not reduced relative clauses. They are not even clauses at all. They noun phrases, and they function as appositives in the sentences made by that guy. You provided an adequate explanation. "Them" is an objective case pronoun, not a subjective case pronoun, so in general, "them" cannot be used at the beginning of a sentence. However, there are some exceptional cases where it is acceptable. |

In return for the ladies acceptance, they judge and criticize ladies at every given moments. The minute a man has made this decision he ceases to develop his mind.
He may, of course, go on to obtain more money. These increase his market value in the eyes of women, for women believe that a man who is able to understand and manage his business properly must also know and understand them. But any real possibility of communication between the sexes ceases at a point after he shows is true colours. Their paths are divided forever. |
