aribisala0: There is a world of difference. Yes I understood you to mean Yoruba wives or at least wives of Yoruba men subject to Customary law so what is your point with that?
Yes that is what I am saying
Do not and are not entitled to are very different scenarios I said "are not entitled to" In Yoruba culture spouses are not entitled to ( have no rights to) inherit each other whether a wife or a husband. Husbands are not entitled to inherit from wives and vice versa
The only entitlement to inherit in Yoruba culture is relatedness BY BLOOD
That is not to say Friends DO NOT inherit from friends. It can happen but not by right Not by right? I don't agree. |
Family › Re: Mother Or First Son, Who Is Entitled To The Late Father's Property by NoToPile: 1:34pm On Aug 10, 2021 |
aribisala0: English language is important. I Never said wives "don't" inherit. What I said is they are not entitled by customary law to do so This is the case in Virtually all Yoruba culture. . Wives are not entitled to inherit from husbands and husbands are not entitled to inherit from wives He may make gifts whilst alive but after death inheritance in Yorubaland is BY BLOOD as far as rights are concerned wives have no ENTITLEMENT
of course many families exercise discretion in these things and what happens in practice varies There's no difference in what I said and what you are saying. By wives I meant Yoruba wives, the opening sstatement ' In Yoruba culture' covers that. You are still saying wives do not (are not entitled to) inherit in Yoruba culture and I am challenging that. |
Family › Re: Mother Or First Son, Who Is Entitled To The Late Father's Property by NoToPile: 9:52am On Aug 10, 2021 |
aribisala0: I am not sure what you mean by that word "upturned" Ori ojori and Idi igi is a totally unrelated issue to whether a wife can inherit her husbands property so you are mixing things up Those issues are tangential and related to POLYGAMY and how property are shared among the children of a POLYGAMOUS marriage. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with a wife's right to inherit Rather it is about CHILDREN not WIVES
With regard to being overturned . The judgment in Sunmonu v Suberu was given at the Supreme Court with respect to Yoruba tradition/Custom and you are citing a judgment with respect to Ibo law and Custom. They are totally different systems This is just like saying The judgment on Ibo traditional law has overturned Sharia law that is illogical There are fundamental reasons why Ukeje does not apply in Yoruba law. Anyone who is grounded in Yoruba tradition knows this Spouses do not inherit each other's property It operates BOTH WAYS. Women do not inherit from their husbands and vice versa. Ukeje is about the right of a female child NOT wife. The Yoruba tradition is that inheritance is BY BLOOD. The wife is not a relative by blood So the Ukeje case which is based on a "discrimination" against women(children of deceased) is inapplicable
A supreme court judgment can only be AUTOMATICALLY interpreted to overturn a judgment of a LOWER court . To say it overturned Sunmonu v Suberu is wrong unless that was explicitly stated. That Ukeje judgment does not cover all Native and Customary law in Nigeria or Sharia law just Ibo law. @ bolded Say what? Which Yoruba culture says wives dont inherit from their husband's ? |

okine4real: Forget about the mother, African like to talk with sentiment. In customary law, its States that the First Son inherits what his father has, that is through, but that law has a CLAUSE. THE CLAUSE IS, IF YOU TAKE THE GAIN, YOU ALSO TAKE THE BURDEN. If he wants to evict his mother that is his business, but HE HAS TO TAKE CARE OF THE MOTHER TILL SHW DIES AND ALSO TAKE CARE OF HIS SISTERS TILL THEY GET MARRIED. But while will a sensible man wants to evict his own mother from her husbands house? Is he stupid? His mother ohh. Which customary law? the bolded is not entirely applicable in Yoruba land. perambulator: You need to tell us your tribe because traditions vary in Nigeria. In yoruba land it is the wife's property until she dies, a son cannot override his mother's right to the property until she dies. I am not even sure a 1st son in yoruba land has any right over his elder sister (assuming he isnt the 1st BORN) talk less his mother. In Yoruba land He doesn't have that right to drag his father's property with his mum. If he has elder sister(s) he doesn't even have a special preference over them during property sharing. Radarada. bukatyne: The tragic thing is that she can sue him for child support once DNA test fingers him as the father.
So a man has no right to impose a woman keeps his baby and must be a 'father' if he is raped.
A woman has the right to keep/abort a pregnancy and insist for child support if she had the baby outside the man's will.

Family › Re: Is It Possible For Married Women To Be Accused Of Raping Their Husbands by NoToPile: 6:24am On Aug 08, 2021 |
Well since it's about male rape.
A friend of mine was raped by a lady, they were not married, they were not even dating.
This should he around 7 years ago. She drugged his drink and then 'helped herself' dude was even a virgin. The guy later realized and sent her out. She got pregnant came to inform the guy, guy chased her away. The parents were the ones who accepted the baby, dude said he never wanted to have anything done with her. He was my friend and at that time the mother was my boss, she even told me to speak with him, he politely(not very politely) told me not to have that discussion with him.
He didnt even the see the baby, as we all know children like that are always a splitting image of the husband. He didn't even see the girl.
Now when they asked the lady, she said she really likes H, (H is a confirmed fine boy, ladies will drool after him but he was decent and morally upright guy) has been giving H greenlight, H didn't succumb . H was serving at that time, she then visited H and drugged the drink and helped her self. When the mama was narrating the story of her interview with the girl I was dumbfounded, the most annoying part of everything is the lady is very pretty , you would always look twice at her.
The question I kept asking was why would she do that, she could have gotten the attention of any guy she wanted.
I didn't believe its possible for her to actually'help herself to it' questions like 'how will the thing enter when he was drugged' so I raised the issue I was on a PG program then, we were about 4 in the lab that day and 3 were guys, they all said its very possible even our acting supervisor confirmed its possible. |

Sanchez01: A gaming laptop is a laptop designed specifically to play games. Not just any games as a matter of fact. And yes, people, particularly westerners buy them specially to play games.
However, creatives also use them for different tasks such as coding, video editing, graphics design, etc. Because of their powerful CPU, GPU and dedicated graphics card, they handle resource intensive software or apps flawlessly whereas the regular laptops could freeze on launching some of these programmes, apps or software.
I remember I used to have a laptop that would freeze for up to three hours when I launch a particular software then and it still won't open the app in then end.
Yes, gaming laptops are well built, sturdier and are more rugged than our regular laptops. Creatives mostly buy them in Nigeria for certain tasks since it keeps their frustration in check. A sizeable number primarily use them for games. @1st bolded Okay thanks. Now I feel better @2nd bolded , the Ijebu in me has been ( is still) trying to reason why someone would spend so much on a lappy to play game |

I have gone to Alaba to test-run the TVs and I was disappointed with the quality if you are not a TV novice you will easily notice the Gulf in quality between the original and the ones at Alaba. If you can't buy new LG TVs from Fouani then buy first grade used one. Now imagine seller A (Alaba TV)and seller B ( Fouani TV) that wants to sell the same size of TV on this thread, one will definitely be cheaper than the other and the one with the more expensive price will be quoted as too high. |

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Can One Rent An Apartment Of 250k Per Annum With 80k Job? by NoToPile: 9:52am On Jul 30, 2021 |
kestare: Guys. This is literally my story.
I was on the mainland (Ijanikin, Close to Agbara and Badagry) and got a job on the island (Marina) that pays 85,000.
My transport every day was 1000 naira every day.
I would wake up 4:30am and by 5am I was at the bus stop. Anything more, and I would be late for work.
Every day I would spend about 5hours in traffic. Iyana Iba, Costain, Volks, Underbridge.
I literally was going through serious stress. Sometimes I would arrive at work looking and feeling exhausted.
Then I looked for an apartment closer to work.
I knew surulere would be my best best.
The minimum cost for anything decent is 300,000. The agents were not merciful, the Landlords too.
Then I got an apartment for 250,000 agent 60, agreement 60. Totalling 370,000.
Then my stress drastically reduced. Transport at the time reduced to about 500 back and forth.
I also cut down on all my other expenses.
Even tho it looked like I was working for three months to pay my rent. I was happy. I was more productive and I could do more with the extra hours I spent in the traffic.
There is no one size fits all advise in this case.
Lagos is a very crazy place and if you have been in the job market for a long time, you really do not have a lot of options when a job offer comes. You just have to start with the hopes for improvement.
Get your apartment, if it will cause you less stress. But you must be very shrewd in your spending going forward.
Remember you will feed, pay utility bills, clothe and still send back home.
So.
I wish you well brother. Ehyah, I understand how you felt then because I stay around that Axis, but honestly it so much better now. After they finished trade fair, barracks, you get a smooth ride from volks to mile 2 . It remains volks, Iyanaiba, and okoko if that is completed lots of peeps will be so happy. I wonder how those who work on the Island from my side cope back then. It was really terrible oo. |
