chimerase2: Ondo Senator Apologises For Voting In Support Of Child Marriage Bill
The Senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, Ayo Akinyelure has apologised for voting in support of the child marriage bill.
The Senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, Ayo Akinyelure The people of Mr Akinyelure’s Senatorial District on Monday staged a peaceful protest in Akure, the State Capital against the voting of the lawmaker representing them in the Senate for supporting the child marriage bill.
Summoned by the constituents to a meeting held at the Cultural Centre Auditorium, Akure, which is also the Senatorial headquarters, Mr Akinyelure regretted the act and apologised to the people, explaining that he cast the vote in error.
He emphasised that as a true Yoruba man, he wouldn’t have intentionally voted in support of child marriage.
He said there is still hope in correcting the situation as the bill will still be passed at the House of Representatives and the States Houses of Assembly.
The Women Leaders of Labour Party in the six local government areas in the senatorial zone who spoke on behalf of the women condemned the support of the bill which she described barbaric.
Massive protests have greeted the Senate’s passage of a resolution to retain the provision of Section 29 (4) (b) of the 1999 Constitution. Under the section, a married underage girl is deemed to be an adult.
Prominent Nigerians and human right organisations took to the social media to protest what they described as legalisation of sexual abuse of underage girls.
The protests were held in parts of the country on Saturday such as Abuja and Lagos among others. Also, petitions were signed to protest the law.
The protesters might besiege all state Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly on Tuesday to call on the Senate to reverse itself.
Those who protested queried why underage Nigerians could not exercise their franchise at the poll but were being subjected to marriage at tender age.

lekanolas: The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, yesterday insisted that the Federal Government is experiencing shortfalls in funds required to implement the 2013 budget.
Okonjo-Iweala also stated that an amendment to the 2013 Appropriation Act is necessary even as she disclosed that the capital component of the budget has been implemented by 67 per cent.
This means that about N670bn has already been spent.
The minister spoke before the House of Representatives’ Committees on Appropriation, Finance and Legislative Compliance where she debunked allegations that the Executive had jettisoned the budget as passed and signed by President Goodluck Jonathan in the first quarter of this year.
She also sought the legislators’ approval to divert the fund accrued to the illegal Excess Crude Account, ECA, which is deemed illegal, to a Stabilisation Fund embedded in the Sovereign Wealth Fund, SWF.
Okonjo-Iweala, who fielded a barrage of questions on the economy in general and the 2013 budget in particular, insisted that the executive was seeking an amendment and not a supplementary budget.

Health › Re: Cure For Chronic Mouth Odour. by Rhea: 6:33pm On Jul 15, 2013 |
1. Brush your teeth twice daily, first thing in the morning and last thing before you go to bed. The evening one is the most important because rotting of the teeth is most active when we sleep. 2. You must floss before going to bed (right after brushing your teeth in the evening). Check youtube if you do not know how to floss. Flossing is as important (if not more important than) as brushing the teeth. 3. Rinse your mouth for 30 seconds with mouthwash after flossing. Listerine is the best out there. 4. Drink plenty of water. When the body is dehydrated, the tongue is the first to be parched. Dehydration activates the bacteria that are normal residents on the tongue to start producing hydrogen sulfide gas and many other noxious gases. 5. Check with your doctor to ensure you do not have a lingering upper respiratory or ear/nose/throat infection. These are also chronic causes of halitosis (mouth odor). 6. Carry a minty chewing gum and chew after every meal. Don't mind the people that think that chewing gum is just for women. Chew it momentarily and discard as soon as you have absorbed the minty flavor. 7. If you are the type that rinse their mouth with soft drinks, follow it up with water. Coke corrodes the teeth almost instantly. |

Afolabs101: What's wrong with jungle justice? How do you know the person being beaten and burnt is guilty ? The word of a couple of random people is enough for you to join in the brutal killing of someone?? See below:
1- ALUU 4, we all know about that one 2- Samuel of Surulere, a 12 year old boy was accused of attempting to kidnap a younger child. A mob grabbed him, took the N50 note from his pocket and said he was using it to lure the child into kidnapping. No single witness to the supposed crime or the child who Samuel was accused of kidnapping were present. 3- Two destitutes in Lagos were eating raw meat that some people claimed was human meat, they were stripped beaten and almost killed but for police intervention. In the end it was confirmed that it was beef they were eating. 4- A woman again in Lagos was walking with her children and their cousins. A mob said she was a child kidnapper as it is not logically possible to have that number of children with her. She was stripped and beaten before police intervention. 5- The many cases where someone has accused an innocent person of stealing his Joystick and the next thing is the mob starts the beating.
There are many more examples of innocent people accused of theft, kidnapping, hit and run accidents etc who are killed in the name of jungle justice.
I am not against the death penalty for armed robbers and kidnappers, but let us be sure that the suspect is actually guilty before we kill them. There were lots of comments of people saying "good riddance" and "they deserve it", people were basically rejoicing the killing of the ALUU 4.
Next thing we hear they were not robbers and were innocent, now the tributes start flowing in and those that rejoiced earlier ate their words.
Remember that God is watching, so as you leave comments saying how good it is that those people died, remind yourselves that you do not actually know whether the people who were killed were armed robbers or innocent. If the police are willing to kill innocent people and label them armed robbers, it stands to reason that other unscrupulous members of society may do the same. And what alternative do you offer besides your astute observations? Have you ever had a loaded gun pointed in your face by an armed robber? Have you ever had the privilege of being robbed at gun point by the police? Have you ever slept in a kidnapper's den before? Will you willingly offer yourself as a witness to the police when such "innocent criminals" are handed over tot he police for prosecution? |

Now, Nigeria One is largely financed by international consortium, the government retains approx. 25% ownership for regulative purpose. We have just signed a deal of $1.1b, which is part of a $3b loan from China on a 3% APR with moratorium of 25yrs. This is the best credit facility ever. Highly commendable.
Judging by the comments on Nairaland, its best to say, that this forum is no more a place for people with discerning minds, but a gathering of mentally lacking never-do-wells. Politics › Re: Army Smashes Police Robbery Gang In Bayelsa by Rhea: 6:18pm On Jul 12, 2013 |
Okponee: Yet, this may not be the best solution, as an innocent fellow may be wrongly accused sometimes and handed over for 'public roasting'. If the report is true, I thank God for the Army men that achieved the great feat. Thorough Investigations must be done and the perpetrators brought to book accordingly, to serve as a deterrent.
The police should also do internal overhauling, to rid the force of some of the various officers, who serve as a menace to the society. The entire police formation will have to be reformed for such normal processes to work in nigeria. Before then, roasting serves as a great deterrent. It is working in Saudi Arabia with beheadings and amputations. If a crowd of witness cannot tell innocent from guilty, what chance does a corrupt judge or police in doing so? |

Family › Re: My Husband Is Always Running by Rhea: 5:08pm On Jul 11, 2013 |
iamsaved: I am extremely confused at this point as I need to plan my future and my kid(s) future.
We have been married for 4years now, blessed with a child and expecting the second. For weired and unexplained reasons, my hubby is fond of abandoning our home whenever we have mild to heavy misunderstanding. He first abandoned me 2weeks after wedding over a minor arguement, came back, 4months later after wedding, same thing for one month and finally when I was pregnant with our first child over a little misunderstanding but this time for a long time. Yes I know it sounds funny. We reconciled late last year after he came with his family to beg, my major reason of going back being cos of my child. Now am some months pregnant and he attempted to leave again last two weeks. It was his friend who stopped him from leaving. During the meeting held last, Hia friend asked him exactly the reason he keeps doing that, he said he just doesn't want wahala or stress.
This didn't start with me, he once said he ran away from home for 5years when he was in his early 20s cos his mum was telling him to o house chores. I regret reconciling with him. If I wasn't pregnant, I know i would have walked out finally since its still the same thing happening all over again. I am scared for my future and the future of my kids. Your husband may have a hot temper and thus runs away from home instead of standing the risk of inflicting regrettable injury on you or the kids. I do not support that, but I am only saying that it does happen. Try to think of the conditions at home that tend to support his stay and then encourage those conditions. It may be decent cooking, peace and quiet or friends around. Whatever it is, you can try to make those things happen when he is around and perhaps that will make him stay. However, you also have to ask yourself what this marriage is worth to you. You obviously married the wrong person and perhaps ignored most of these signs when you were dating (yes, the signs are always there, but we choose to ignore them because we believe that love conquers all). If the marriage is worth the trouble for you, then go through the pains and make it work. If not, then file for divorce and lead a new life as a single mother. |
