THE SPACE RACE IS BACK ON - AND CHINA IS IN THE LEAD.... A Chinese spacecraft has become the first ever to land on the far side of the moon, according to state-run media, in a giant leap for human space exploration. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) landed the robotic probe Chang’e 4 in the unexplored South Pole-Aitken basin, the largest, oldest, deepest, crater on the The Communist party-owned Global Times also said the probe had “successfully made the first-ever soft landing” on the far side of the moon. The mission aims to take detailed measurements of the moon’s terrain and mineral composition. The successful landing was touted as a “huge feather in China’s cap” by Malcolm Davis, senior analyst in defence strategy and capability at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. “There’s a lot of geopolitics or astropolitics about this, it’s not just a scientific mission, this is all about China’s rise as a superpower,” said Davis. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm for the space program in China. There’s a lot of nationalism in China, they see China’s role in space as a key part of their rise.” The landing was greeted as “an impressive accomplishment” by Nasa administrator Jim Brindestine. A spokesperson from the Australian Space Agency said the agency did not have a comment on the mission except to offer China its congratulations on the success of the landing and to “wish them all the best”. Davis said China’s successful landing could “set a fire under the Americans”, who may not like the idea that the next person to set foot on the moon may be a Chinese Taikonaut, as they are unofficially called. “I imagine we will see an announcement the Chinese do intend to send Taikonauts to the moon by 2030,” said Davis. Spacecraft have taken pictures of the moon’s far side before, but no lander has ever touched down there. The move marks a step towards China’s ambition to become a leading power in space exploration alongside the US and Russia. Davis said China’s extraterrestrial ambitions seemed to be driven by multiple factors, including a desire for military dominance of space. Other motivations include the access to vast resource wealth provided by the moon and asteroids, in particular Helium-3 which is believed to exist in great abundance on the moon, and also that dominance of the region would be a sign of China’s growing power. “China has been very clear in its understanding of this. They have compared the moon to the South China sea and Taiwan, and asteroids to the East China sea. They’re making a very clear geopolitical comparison with what’s happening with space and we need to pay attention to that.”

A Nigerian airline says it could pull its business out of the UK after one of its pilots was arrested by immigration officials on suspicion of being a stowaway and threatened with deportation. Max Air, which is based in Nigeria, condemned the move by border staff at Bournemouth International Airport as an example of the Home Office’s “hostile environment policy”. The company is now losing £180,000 a day because they cannot find another pilot to fly the plane after Captain Adam Dilli Ibrahim, 36, returned home voluntarily on another flight. Captain Ibrahim was detained for questioning, fingerprinted and photographed before being told he would be forcibly removed – even though pilots do not legally require leave to enter the UK for seven days or less. Frank Unokesan, whose company is responsible for maintaining Max Air planes, told The Independent that there had been a ‘long history’ of problems with immigration officials. “Whenever they see a green (Nigerian) passport they have doubted they are the captain and believe he is a stowaway, that’s their mindset,” he said “The captain has done nothing wrong. I feel terrible, I feel ashamed. It is so much bureaucracy.” “That’s the way I see it,” he said. “I would have thought with Brexit the UK would try and make more friends but now they are kicking us in the teeth. “I don’t know what kind of government they are running.” Max Air may now avoid the UK in future and take its business to Germany, which has allowed pilots to stay for up to three months without any problems, he added. “Nigeria is a former colony of the UK and we are trying to do business with Britain but now they are turning back our business and deporting the pilot,” said Mr Unokesan. “Max Air has ten Boeings and five private jets, one of the biggest in the market in Nigeria. The managing director is so angry they are treating us like this. “If you treat us like this, what is the hope for the future in the UK?” Captain Adam Dilli Ibrahim was arrested by immigration officials on arrival at Bournemouth International Airport The dispute with the Home Office centres on the interpretation of the Immigration Act 1971, which states that a pilot or crew member does not require leave to enter the UK if they depart within seven days. Captain Ibrahim, who has previously flown in and out of the UK without problem, told immigration officials on arrival on 10 December that the maintenance work on the aircraft was scheduled to last between seven and ten days. “Instead of respecting the position of the captain, they take his passport and they said after seven days we will talk about that,” said Mr Unokesan. “They suspected the co-pilot is the real pilot because he has a visa in his passport and the captain is a stowaway posing as a captain. So they arrested him for entering into the UK without a visa.” After taking legal advice, the pilot voluntarily flew out of the UK on 16 December. The maintenance work finished on 20 December but Max Air is unable to find a replacement captain at short notice. The aircraft remains in the UK and the co-pilot is still staying at a local hotel. “This maintenance work alone was bringing in $100,000 (£80,000) of business to the UK, but we are losing $9,500 (£7,500) an hour,” said Mr Unokesan. Max Air say that on previous occasions they have either brought in more engineers to finish the work in time or applied for an extension of leave for the pilot. Immigration officials argue that a visa is mandatory for nationals staying longer than seven days and that it is the responsibility of air crew to ensure they have the correct documentation on arrival. The Home Office said in a statement: “We do not routinely comment on individual cases.

TheCongo2:Hmmm...... Some culture just don't believe in equality, it's a cultural mindset and they carry this orientation wherever they go n seek to have it established... Just look at the gang grooming culture ravaging uk cities that have significant British Pakistani population..... One the convicts was unapologetic during trial, he simply told the female judge that someone like her is a third class citizen in his culture.... Indians are giving opportunity to run establishment and the next thing they do is to weed out other ethnic minorities n replace them with fellow indians... There are some immigrant communities in Stockholm right now police just can't enforce law and order without risking a riot...... Does these examples look like equality n respect u preach... Canada plans to bring in 300 thousand immigrants annually over the next 10 to 15 years.... Just wait n see, in another 10 years u will understand better what I'm talking about.... People are not just left alone to practice their beliefs and expect them to embrace or respect other beliefs antithetic to their culture.....it never works... Without proper integration, cultural enrichment is bound to fail...... With consequent lack of respect for other people's culture or beliefs.... And there's nothing any HRC or any regulatory body can do.... That's the challenge uk is facing now n one of the main reason for brexit.... And I don't see Canada escaping the hammer, the recipe is just too familiar.... |
IamaNigerianGuy:If u don't know your culture take a book and read... Surrogacy is not new to most African culture and it's widely practiced as a way to secure n entrench the African patriarchal system.... Ever heard of the traditional practice of women getting married to women..... What do u think it's all about..... Anything the ignorant n arrogant black doesn't understand, he quickly disparage it as corrupt foreign culture... He won't make any effort to enlighten his mind n develop himself.... Small wonder few Afrocentric men makes sense when they talk..... |
nomad26:Thanks |
Anyone know which European country will accept valid tier 2 visa on my nigerian passport as entry requirements at the border... . I'm thinking of some sort of vacation this xmas/New year but left it too late to start applying for visa n stuffs.... Preferably Mediterranean countries.... |
mikkyphp:Pls don't compare the Asian cultural mindset to Africa.... They are diametrically opposite n cannot in anyway be reconciled.... Yes both believe the man should be the head of the house but that's where it ends.... In Asian culture, leadership position comes with responsibility, sacrifice, servitude, wealth creation for both present and future generations, entreching the principle of self preservation and building lasting legacies..... while in africa leadership is synonymous with repression, abuse, exploiting the weak, tyranny n fascism..... No wonder the African man can kill to be a leader... Men build legacies, men build civilisation.... The Asian man has proven himself in this regard. He's been able to lift his generation out of poverty into prosperity, he deserves to be the head of any institution he desires including his home.... Whereas the modern African man has failed miserably to build any meaningful semblance of civilisation or prosperity...... And I strongly believe our fiercely patriachal n retrogressive culture is responsible for this.... I won't pander to irresponsibility n oppression which seem to be the trademark of the modern African man just because I'm one... And just like the word of Bill Gates... The world doesn't care about your self esteem, the world expect u to achieve something first before feeling good about yourself. I'm sorry, but until I see the African man profusely sweating thick blood, working his ass off to build a lasting legacy for himself, his family, his society and the future generation.... I'm not convinced he deserves to demand for headship of any unit whatsoever.... This is my opinion... |

general1970:Security is key.... It takes priority over every other infrastructure.... Will u live in maidiguri right now even if it has excellent healthcare system n schools.... |
Mac2016:Every kid male or female stop sleeping on their parents bed at certain age.... Parents stop bathing their kids male or female when they are of a certain age.... Parental role involves u cleaning your kids.... I'll rather a father clean up his daughter than a nanny or female relative.... Abuse is more likely from an outsider.... Nobody can love your daughter more than yourself.... And if u love her, u won't abuse her.... |
AUSVINS:Really... She said that on national TV.... It obvious she lacks intelligence restrain when it it comes to public discourse.... Truly she get fish brain.... |
Oga just tell your wife to shut up and learn not to bring personal affairs to public.... Not every family decision is for public consumption.... Your duty as the head of the house is to protect your family and keep them from external assault- both physical n verbal.... Supporting careless remarks that virtually made ur home looks vulnerable is idiocy.... It portrays u as a sissy n weak.... Your wife seriously goofed n I hope u will reprimand her in the bedroom.... Except she's the breadwinner of the family, which I suspect she is anyway.... |
Pruwa:Temptation against your daughter.... U people talk as if we didn't grow up with younger sisters.... |
JSayin:Ignorance kills... PPFN has been in nigeria for years... They fund virtually all family planning and contraceptive services in nigerian hospitals.... |
kimbraa:Man is not from ape... Man is ape's distant cousin... Evolution isn't taught in nigerian schools... Reason for so many confusion and misconception about origin of man.... |
izzou:But Nigeria cant conduct referendum on a people who hasn't OFFICIALLY asked for one..... There has to be a political force in the SE calling for this referendum.... Nigeria has to sit with some political figures from SE to draft the terms of referendum and agree on the outcome..... Or else the whole exercise will just be purely academic and may end up like the Catalonian case.... That's the reason some people advocate that a pro secession political group has to hijack the political positions in SE.... Your present leaders are out of it, they will simply throw u guys under the bus..... A new pro referendum force has to come in and take over... My guy, u sound intelligent..... secession is not easy as IPOB makes it look..... It's hard work and requires years of careful planning, meticulous process, strategic agitation and strong political will from the region to make it happen..... I'm not against any group leaving Nigeria as the country itself is evidently a failed experiment and an embarrassment to the black race.... However, a unilateral action of referendum or secession either by Nigeria or SE region just won't cut it in today's world where vested interest differs..... If it's not formal, the foreign powers will not recognize the new nation..... Remember, this people want a Nigeria that's big but useless and incompetent, thus easily exploited..... That's their own vested interest and will find every excuse to keep it that way..... And I'm sure the last thing u want is to have your new country but still have to travel out with a Nigerian passport..... |
poseidon12:But he should know how to change tyres n repair cars if he's to perform his oversight function effectively... |
Olanrefront3355:Dubai don't even have crude oil... Na Abu Dhabi get oil... Yet when we talk restructuring, some people will start developing seizures foaming from the mouth.... |
mofedamijo:No need for all this straw man argument.... Everybody knows the best country for a nigerian is nigeria..... But when those living outside the country seem well off compared to those back home on average, emigration is inevitable.... All this talk of few Nigerians abroad living like a pauper won't deter nobody..... Nigerian doctors are emigrating in droves.... The few upper middle class in nigeria are resigning in multinationals and leaving for Canada... If this class of people can leave, then it shows the feeble faith nigerians have in the their country.... Telling struggling n fustrated Nigerians to stay put is pointless.... People are leaving this country not because of any greener pastures..... It has more to do with escaping poverty and the seemingly obvious uncertainty..... The solution to this problem is building a viable and prosperous economy capable of lifting millions out of poverty, building a sustainable as well as a reproducible middle class...... We can start by paying our underclass workers a living wage that can actually take them home till month end.... That will be a good step.... Telling people to stay put and continue the struggle wont work..... |
Fitbillionaire:I don't know of south Africa.... But any hardworking person can make 100 dollars a day in most developed country... Especially if the job is bank or contract basis... In fact such amount is close to minimum wage for a day's job.... 30k a day in naija is stretching your imagination too far for an average nigerian worker... That's 900k a month.... I can bet, less than 0.01 percent of naija workers earn such amount.... Most state commisioners don't even earn that except u in the good book of your governor..... Besides, inflation is eating away whatever meagre wage the nigerian worker is earning... 18k minimum wage is rubbish in today's naija economy and 30k per month isn't better in any way..... Even for one person, without any social cushion or govt welfare support... That money can never take u to middle of the month anywhere in naija.... That's why abject poverty is very much pronounced in the last couple of years..... Whatever the high cost of living in western country, 100 dollars a day is ok for u to manage yourself without turning to liability or nuisance while awaiting something better... There's something called dignity in labour... There's a reason that term was coined... That's the point .... Hope u get it now.... |
wiseone28:I admit white build south Africa... The fact that the black led govt has been able to sustain the prosperity and even spread it across board should also be lauded... |
movetoca:Guy see as u take finish ur country..... Nigerian problem is multifactorial and the fact that the present youths are docile and ineffective is not helping matters.... While. |
It's now very obvious nigerian military can't defend this nation..... Corruption and nepotism has destroyed the nigerian military and the result is what we see unfolding in northeast.... Poor training, connection based promotions amongst the ranks, obsolete weaponry and artillery, poor morals of infantry and extremely corrupt officials has rendered our military incompetent.... Now boko haram is teaching other insurgent groups how not to deal with the nigerian army, exposing their flaws and vulnerability... Nigeria is a time bomb and it's only a matter before it explodes.... The nigerian military has always been the factor forcing the unity of this country.... Now that the centre cannot hold, the questions is when will things fall apart.... |
These companies are multinational and I guess their wage structure reflect international payscale irrespective of location.... I may be wrong though.... Moreover, those salaries look big as per naija purchasing power parity...but it seems like standard pay for most graduate entry level jobs.... 20million is about $55 thousand which is not really much in most developed nations... |
chloride6:With the fall in oil price.... Are u sure... Cos I heard they retrenched quite a lot of their workers... |
Schwartz:They don't stay back.... Moreover, hey actually study n pay their tuition in full... Unlike Africans that abandon their studies half way n look for means to stay put in usa..... |
