MimiSheWrote: Hello Everyone, first of all I apologize in advance for the long note and also about my English, not actually my first language.
My name is Mimi, I was born in Nigeria... But cos of the nature of my dad's profession i have spent around 75% of my life in different countries outside Nigeria... Mostly in EU.
Well enough said about myself, cos this topic is not about me but about Nigerians... Our general mentality and perception of abroad.
Guys listen up... All that glitters is not really gold. Out there is not entirely what people think it is. And you might think just because I have spent so much time outside Nigeria i do not understand the struggle in Nigeria and therefore not qualified to tell you all this "nonsense"..... I completely get it.. trust me.
But even a random 3 years old kid knows that the country is messed up and nothing to write home about, we all know about the Suffering, depression and "starvation level of poverty" in Nigeria yeah.... That's why everyone is desperatly looking for a way out, no doubt... but trust me, JAPA is not 'always' your ticket out of poverty... Well 'sometimes' it is... but most times it's just your direct ticket to being subjected to racism, more depression, more struggles, several mental disorder, homelessness, modern day slavery and the list goes on and on.
Trust me... when it comes to hustling field, success is much more louder than failure. cos our mind was designed to constantly search for hope. which means you would quickly hear about the lucky 3% that made it big through JAPA, but hardly hear about the remaining unlucky 97% that found themselves in worse possible condition after the same JAPA. There's no money tree out here... there's no diamond river out here... Is there more opportunities? Well yes, But there are millions of people that already done and still doing whatever you intend to come do over here and yet they are still in the worse condition than you are in right now.
You would literally cry when you see what most of our African brothers and sisters go through around the world in the name of Japa. And as a Nigerian?? Trust me it gets worse.. and your chances gets even much smaller. Cos no one trust Nigerians anymore any where around the world and I believe we all know why.
Sorry but I'm not trying to burst anyone's bubble, kill anyone's vibe or being a negative biitch! Naaaah I'm only trying to be realistic! I'm only trying to tell you something no travel agent would ever tell you and something people abroad hardly tell you, and even when they eventually do tell you...? You don't believe them.. instead you result to asking them questions like "why are they still there if it's that bad"? .....
Well.... You wanna know why most of them are still there? Let me tell you why... there is a psychological reason for that... First They are still in DENIAL. Imagine dreaming your entire life to travel abroad and finally have a good life, you probably invested almost everything or everything you have got to make it happen (your money, your time, your last hope) But then you finally got there and then meet a reality that is entirely different from your life long dreams and perception of these faraway green lands? I don't know if you know... but our brain is defensive in nature, it will automatically switch straight to denial mode... Leaving you with atleast enough 'hope and wait for a magic or should i say a miracle' (afterall this is abroad where magic happens?) This is just one of the reasons why most of these people continue sticking around instead of returning home.
Another reason is that they are worried about what people back home would say or think... Because the people back home also got this general fvcked up mentality and very high expectation of people coming back from Japa (y'all need to stop it! Y'all need to get rid of that mentality, seriously ) cos like I said earlier... there is no bleeping money tree over there! I don't know where Nigerians got that idea from in the first place... It needs to stop, yall driving the youth nuts with such mentality, it's doing more harm than good. That high expectation/ pressure back home is mostly the reason our people are more likely to result to crime out here (so just stop it! )
I have met alot of other African nationalities abroad... and amazingly they don't share the same mentality we have about Abroad. They treat abroad as just another hustling ground and not a direct ticket to success... Therefore they are more relaxed and less pressured than Nigerians out here.
Moving Abroad is not such a bad idea though, it worked and still works for few lucky ones (including my Family) it would be wrong and biased of me if I fail to mention that.. There are plenty of and more opportunities over out here not doubt... But what I'm just saying is that... it's not always that easily reached.. as most people automatically believe. Look... Somehow all these countries are intelligently designed In such a way that it take back almost entirely everything you make out here from you one way or the other... Through tax, through mind blowing bills or random expenses around every corner.
And at the end of the day you realize you are nothing but a modern day slave building someone's country for free... And without freedom.
Most people screaming Japa in Nigeria are far in better living condition and more stable mentally ,more happy than majority of people in the so called abroad without even knowing it. Sometimes Instead of gambling and betting your hard earned million of naira on Japa, it's more advisable to chill out... relax and invest that Millions in Nigeria. I'm just saying... You would probably end up living a life most people over there can only envy and dream of.
Thanks for reading my long note... I hope this helps someone in making a life decision out there. #ItsYourGurlMimi Long epistle but no real substances. Just preplanned words of discouragement. What exactly is your point? The people that didn't make it abroad, is it that they didn't have a skill or they are discriminated against? I'm not taking you serious because you words though presented intelligently lack substance. |

Gambling is a very serious addiction and needs a drastic action before it can be stopped, grace of God is also required.
I stopped gambling about 3 months ago and every month, my fiancee request for my bank statement not only for the gambling but also as a check to my spending
I can tell you that the urge to play is still there but I have a lot of people to prove wrong and that's my motivation.
There are ways to help him you know
I recently also helped a close friend from it, though he hasn't stopped but it has reduced by over 70% This husband actually needs a strong reset. |

Prettycute90: Did you read everything I said before passing your judgement? Yes dear, I read it clearly. And I'm not passing judgement, especially not on you. Sorry if I sounded harsh but your situation is very difficult. The major problem was in your second paragraph. Assuming you discovered his habit while dating you most likely would have demanded better from him early enough or walked away. Your husband is addicted to one of the things one should do their best to observe in a partner before long term commitment and it's very sad that you missed it. Gambling, womanizing/manizing, spouse beater, alcoholism, lack of regard for hierachys and social/administrative structures etc. I'm sure he's defaulting in more than just one but that's the most devastating to you overall I really wish he was doing better but I'm lost how to advice hence my comment. The easiest way to get some sense into him temporarily with the hope that he'll come around is to have someone he cannot refuse (Father, pastor, mentor, collègue) to talk to him and make certain demands from him Leaving him might be your second best option but I promise it's very likely equally challenging and maybe less frustrating since you get to put up with him less. Don't try to force solutions onto him as he might just end up hating you more. He needs to find himself in a situation where he has no other option (works on most men), and the most reasonable way to bring to that position without doing things that would be detrimental to you, the children or the marriage is what I pointed out above. |

Prettycute90: Since we got married, everything about the upkeep, rents, bills, feeding, general upkeep. I mean everything is on me and he has refused to provide for us as he always claimed he doesn't have. I have always be an understanding person who believe, I should be doing while I can, pending when things gets better for him. I never knew he was getting little little, but was gambling away with it.
We really do not date for a long time before we got married. Because I knew him back then in school from a far distance. And we liked each other but didn't date. So, meeting again after graduation and in a different environment, made me believe I already knew and the fact that we already liked each other.
He was struggling with a little job when we got married. My foresight then was to grow with him. I supported him in all ways. Infact, during our wedding, most support came from friends and relatives. Because I'm not the type of a wife that pressurized, It took me a very long time to know the nature of habit he had that has kept him low even before I married him.
He is a chronic gambler. No money stays with him. He wouldn't even care about himself so long as he can afford little money to gamble. Now, I don't have a job and too much burden has crippled my business.
To be honest, I'm losing myself. Sometimes I feel I need a therapy myself. My husband has refused to change or make effort to make this marriage work. Before I had my second child, he was pretending as if he has changed. But immediately I took in, he continues this lifestyle. I almost died due to emotional breakdown and responsibilities shouldered by myself.
I have done everything, (both family members have adviced him severally, I have prayed, fasted, cried, shouted, talked with a calm voice, all my efforts. but non is working.
Presently, since two weeks ago now, I don't cook for him. I source for food for just myself and my children. We barely have decent conversation in this house. I can't even remember the last time we had intimacy. I always avoid him, each time he tries to get close. Because of the situation of things in this house. We had two children and I don't intend having any other. The cost of taking care of myself and the children all by myself is emotional hurting me so much. School has resume and I can't even afford all the expenses of taking my first son to start a new school and I know, he would watch our son stay back at home. He wouldn't care.
We're in the house, but he's only concern is how to get little money to gambles.
Are these not enough reasons to divorce him? During one qurrel we had recently, I told him I want us to separate for now, so we can work on ourselves, and he said he will be with our children not me. I see that as way to make my children suffers.
What can you advise please?
I just want peace of mind.
I don't want to waste my youthful life in a loveless marriage. Where myself and my husband can not support each other to grow in Love. Rather, stressing me. This is one of the problems with modern day approach to dating. So he doesn't have someone in his life that he respects that you can report to who will call him to some order or at least hold him accountable to an extent? This is why I fear for the younger generation cause divorce may come as often as the need to change clothes. |

Do you go to tailors when you have critical health challenges or do you go to doctor when you want to sew your garment?
Answer me oo.. Keep playing dum..... You or a loved one hasn't been in dire situation before that's why. Yes I can consult a tailor if my doctor fails and he/she's had similar experience they got solution to. I can also meet a doctor on what styles of dress I should sew. I know several people who have saved the lives of their family/children/loved ones by listening to the counsel of a "tailor" against that of a "textbook" doctor who was going to kill them. Doesn't mean that next time they are sick, they'll go and consult a "tailor". |

So yesterday, he came around my place, I noticed his mood isn't as cheerful as it used to be... I asked, what was wrong?. He said "You Neva marry you no go understand". He wanted to say more, but I said no need, he shouldn't say anything.. till he left I kept quiet.. I didn't say anything... So I want to ask o, if na only married person fit give advice to who don marry... That's the stereotype that's making many people suffer. I don't always stress myself for folks like this but whenever you have good advice for him please share. Family › Re: My Fiancee Doesn't Want To Court Marriage (registry) by sonofthunder: 3:19pm On Sep 04, 2023 |
pocohantas: I love that girl.
I hope other ladies can read and learn. The reason some men claim they don't want marriage or they have more to lose is because women carry it for head. Always fighting tooth and nail for (registry) marriage. So they sit back and allow you do all the work while acting like they did you a favour marrying you. Have you ever considered the fact that you would be the one needing to escape from an evil man in record time? Breaking head over a man's property even at the expense of your life.
This OP claims it favours women more but he is restless because he met a woman who has mastered her emotions. He wishes she were chasing him upandan for a legal wedding and flying to catch ring. He is bothered because he doesn't hold all the ACES.
Isn't this the kinda arrangement they claim to want online? #TEAMBABYMAMA? Why is OP worried and why the responses from his fellow men above?
Men want this marriage as much as you do if not more. If they hated marriage so much, they wouldn't be open to polygamy or rushing to marry another wife after a divorce or death of the first wife. No man keeps two (polygamy), even four of what he doesn't benefit from. They benefit heavily from marriage. In fact, after tasting marriage, they find it hard to stay alone again. Unlike women who would rather enjoy companionship without commitment.
Stop fighting these men over registry. Tell him you don't want. Let him be the one to create thread and beg you to sign those lines. Stop begging them to see the usefulness in marriage. Stop answering stupid NL questions like "what can you offer a man?" He has the option of remaining single or marrying a fellow man or new yam.
You are the prize. If he isn't giving you same energy, disembark. Though I know many men are capping, even if you want to deceive yourself, don't deceive others. Men marrying and philandering with multiple women mostly relates to lack of discipline, ego et all not fighting for what they don't like. Isn't it worse that the women still agree to be with such men who already have multiple women as wives/concubine's ? If such women have values as your insinuate, they wouldn't settle for such men. Asking a woman what she brings to the table is a valid question as it's a very simple and easy way to dismiss unserious women when seeking for a relationship. Women actually have values they bring into a man's life but ask the average woman this question and she would barely utter a reasonable answer. Like I said earlier, you can choose to decieve yourself but don't pull others into your self imposed deceit. |

IconicR: Nairalanders please is it fair for a mother to suspend her own daughter for fighting her staff?
My friend's mother owns a large company with lots of staff, so she recently completed her nysc program and waiting to be called up for a job so she had to put up at her mum's company as an intern and she was doing her job well to see things done.
Most of the staff do not like to take instructions from her and this has resulted to altercations with most of them, they keep reporting to her mum till a meeting was finally called.
The staff seems to have connived against her and without even bothering to hear her side of the story her mum said she knows what she can do and she won't allow her to cause problems in her company, so she immediately suspended her and ask her to leave and go home.
The staff were happy with this judgement and some made some snide remarks while she was leaving.
This thing has really troubled her recently and she's thinking maybe her mom doesn't like her as she stated that if it were her brother she won't give such judgement.
Was she wrong in trying to put things in order which resulted to most of those fights with the staff?
Was the mum right to have passed such kind of judgement before her staff ?
My friend's mom told her to go resume next week on the condition that she'll behave well but my friend told her mum she's not stepping foot in her company again.
Nairalanders please without being biased who is at fault here? 1. Did you seek your mum's approval before making changes to things in her company? 2. Do you think an intern should be instructing experienced professionals how to work? Or what's the nature of the said work? |

This has happened more than once and with different ladies its not a cooncidence. Mind you, these are pricy restaurants.
For someone like me, even if the food is not good, i wont even say anything especially when im not paying. The average lady that's probably 5 - 10years younger than you is most likely more exposed than you are. Even if it's just once, most of them have been to such restaurants despite being broke. They obviously didn't pay for it. So don't take it to heart. Their lack of appreciation and contentment is a quick signal that they most likely aren't on your level or bringing anything substantial into your life. Don't take it to heart |
