It should have been easier for them to turn one of the south eastern states to a Dubai since states are actually smaller and easier to govern autocratically than a country. Nigeria is not as easy to govern as a state. it's also bigger. |

Many Igbos forget to explain how even amongst Igbos 'non indigenes were expelled from their govt. jobs in Abia state ~2013 or how Anambras aren't really given to marrying Imos or that Ebonyis are heavily discrimated against within the tribe. Don't tell me you don't know (around you) of any lady that was warned not to be involved with a particular man BUT she went ahead, had a baby for the man who has failed to take (welfare responsibilities) of the child. Consequently, these responsibilities have fallen to parents/siblings. Tell me you don't know of any such situation around you. aribisala0: Well I am happy to change subject. Yes Nigeria has worsened in terms of welfare but this is predictable. In our culture every person is required to have children. If you don't you are a failed human being . Is that right? So we are heading for a population of 300 million maybe 1 billion one day We cannot provide for all these people and a crisis is predictable especially as most are under the age of 30 with no skills to sell and no jobs and they too are making babies. A Legislator announced baby 29 this week. So there is an element of individual responsibility in this welfare issue Do not make babies if you cannot provide for them
The other issue is the restructuring question. Do we have the optimal political structure in place ? Many argue that the structure and not the actors is the problem . e.g with security what is the best way to police Nigeria? Hahahaha! Very true but (as they say on Twitter) we are not ready for that conversation. |

aribisala0: I suggest you refresh your understanding of the phrase "getting ahead of oneself" Praiseworthiness is in the gift of the praise giver. You are entitled to withhold your praise but remember
You have only ONE PRAISE
Many others have different schemas from yous.
Yorubas will praise Awolowo for eternity and there is nothing you can do to change that. There are many who praise Tinubu whether he deserves it or not I certainly acknowledge his impact relative to what went before him and in the context of societal expectation. I agree that we need to upgrade expectation but everything in life is contextual. and that is how one must appraise Tinubu; with contemporaneous contextual knowledge Today is another context another time and perhaps a different set of qualities are needed but part of the contextuality is the psychology of Nigeria today Sure. It's my opinion. Everyone has theirs that's why we converse. However if we are indeed sincere, Nigeria (all over obviously with different intensity) has progressively worsened in terms of welfare of [the Majority] of it's citizenry. Is this also my opinion or this is a fact? Consequently anyone (not solely but collectively) who has been an active part of the political class over this period(s) would not reasonably be proud of any 'feats' as there aren't many. O well I guess I may be the 'only' one seeing things bad. Cheers. |
Politics › Re: The Best Lagos State Governor From 1999 Till Date? (Pictures) by Asour: 8:57pm On Jan 28, 2022 |
aribisala0: Who is getting ahead of themselves and how? Are you wanting to practise the phrase? How does that come into anything I have said thus far? So what if Seaports are on exclusive List What is the relevance of that ? Is there not a port almost complete in Lekki? A private venture? Has PDP not been in control at the centre. The reality is that there has been no political will or vision to deliver that in the 16 years that PDP controlled Abuja. Are refineries also on the exclusive list ? Did Amaechi as governor not have enough money to deliver a refinery playing those peculiar "advantages" > Advantages like gas, crude oil. What industry have any of those governors established to take advantage of their own "ADVANTAGES"? Where is the Fishing industry? Where is the boat building industry?
The Niger Delta should even be better off than Lagos considering the huge oil prices they enjoyed under PDP No leader has really achieved any praise worthy feat requiring special praise in Nigeria. That why I said get ahead of ourselves. It seems you're going into politics. Unfortunately I won't as I am no politician. Finally, Lagos maybe 'better' than most Nigerian states (I'm in Lagos) but it's hardly a special place. In many respects it's a terrible place. Anyone who thinks Lagos has 'arrived' as a basis to laud his/her leadership skills has limited his/her growth & has probably deceived many. Cheers. |

aribisala0: Well we know that IGR in 1999 was 500 million a month So clearly the IGR opportunities were not optimized. Optimizing IGR has been a game changer.
You make it sound as if Economic advantages are something to be ashamed of? What is your point> Every state has advantages but they have not been optimized From that same 1999 Delta State enjoyed advantages in terms of Derivation ditto Akwa Ibom and Rivers .What do they have to show
AKpabio and Ibibio cannot by any stretch be described as visionary The money that the foreign governments recovered from Ibori could easily have delivered a seaport to rival Lagos
Same in Akwa Ibom where Akpabio decided a stadium was the best thing he could give his people Advantages are not be ashamed of BUT they should be mentioned so that we don't get ahead of ourselves. Again you have failed to mention states that were inherently 'better' than Lagos before 1999. Most oil companies (well virtually all reasonably sized firms) in Nigeria have always had their HQ in Lagos. Does that count for nought? By the way, for all their sins, Ibori & Akpabio may not be saints but do you realize that seaports are an exclusive list item in Nigeria? Do you think I can go ahead to site a seaport as I choose without Oga FGN? I suppose not. Nigeria is a low Manufacturing country with huge imports. Surely a state that 'ushers' in a huge % of such imports has to have better opportunities economically than other states. No? I am not trifling what you purport the likes of Tinbus have done in Lagos, I'm just saying let's not get ahead of ourselves. There's a long way to go. |

aribisala0: I think you have a comprehension problem.
I said Lagos State hosted the FCT . You said Lagos State has natural success factors and my question was why that success did not manifest before 1999 so do not lie or misrepresent my words. The simple explanation is that Lagos has had better more focussed governance since 1999 than previously There's no way to confirm your assertion. To do so, one has to control for the economic advantages Lagos has which most states lack. And that's a tricky one. Again what Nigerian states were better than Lagos before 1999 (safe for maybe Kano)? |

aribisala0: Why did Lagos not achieve it before 1999? WHEN it hosted the FCT
Why has Abuja not achieved it? Abuja is NOT a Nigerian state. You should know this. It's not a 'normal' place. It was never to/can never Jostle with Lagos as a commercial capital. So no comparisons here. In terms of planning, Abuja is /was better planned than Lagos — Oh I said no comparisons. As for why Lagos was not better before 1999? This shouldn't be a question as Lagos was already ahead of [most] Nigerian states before 1999. Don't you know this? |
Politics › Re: The Best Lagos State Governor From 1999 Till Date? (Pictures) by Asour: 6:39pm On Jan 28, 2022 |
LegendHero: Asiwaju Tinubu laid the framework of trying to make Lagos state independent financial wise which is one of the reason Lagos state has been on an upward trajectory since then.
Now Lagos is the only state in Nigeria that generate almost 70% of her total revenue internally. That means Lagos is non-dependent on federal allocation. A feat that was achieved through the framework of IGR system Tinubu laid.
However, Fashola exceeded expectations and if we are to be fair in this, I think he Trumps the others because he actually projected Lagos as the model state for development while building on his predecessor framework. There are natural success factors that helped Lagos achieve those feats. This is not to say no work was done. This is to say that Lagos is like no other Nigeria state hence any comparison would be unfair. |
