membranus: The Interview
By Bayo Adeyinka
March 15, 2022
Each time I conduct interviews, I usually end up shaking my head and lamenting about the state of education in Nigeria. Our tertiary institutions are churning out graduates who are mainly unemployable. Earlier today, I interviewed almost 50 candidates and by the end of the whole session, the only conclusion I could arrive at was that we have a BIG problem.
In one particular instance, I was alarmed when I read the CV of a particular female graduate of one of the Universities in the South West. It was full of outlandish errors and so I asked her to spell a few words. She spelt the word 'redeemed' wrongly four times before she got it right the fifth time. On her CV, she described herself as one of the officials of the church fellowship when she was an undergraduate but she wrote the name of the church wrongly. She couldn't spell the word 'corper' despite trying more than five times. Yet, during her national service, she taught pupils at a school. I underlined about 10 grammatical errors on her CV and showed them to her. She couldn't even determine where to use apostrophe s.
A particular candidate couldn't speak a whole sentence without committing serious blunders. Even when I repeated those errors while thinking he would correct himself, he repeated the blunders again. Another candidate found it difficult explaining what he studied in school. Some have not developed themselves in any way since they graduated. I had to spend some time to talk to a lady who had her Ordinary National Diploma fifteen years ago but had not done anything to improve herself since then. When she mentioned the issue of paucity of funds, I pointed at her designer bag and her well braided hair as evidence that fund was not the problem.
I asked a female candidate what her aspirations were would have been if money was were not a restraining factor. Her answer left all of us on the interview panel with mouths wide open. "I want to live large and live big", she told us. One of the candidates told us he studied 'BSc Economics'. He made the mistake thrice three times until I corrected him that he studied Economics and not BSc Economics. A fellow was asked to introduce himself and he started with 'My names are...'. I asked him how many people he's he was introducing. Even when I tried to correct him, he insisted he was correct so I gave up on him.
On one occasion, I asked a female candidate what her husband does. She replied, 'I'm sorry but he's a driver'. I asked her why she was sorry about the legitimate job that her husband does. I told her that the job of her husband her husband's job does not define who he is. His job is simply a job. I told her I also drove a cab before once. I spent the longest time with her as I wanted her mind to be disinfected of the low self-esteem she seemed to carry. I played the video of Femi Ogedengbe, the Nollywood actor turned security guard in the United States and encouraged her to be proud of her husband. Interestingly, the husband is a graduate and I've asked her to give me her husband's CV. She almost broke down in tears when I told her I'd rather hire her husband than hire her. She knelt and apologized before she left my office.
A few guys had the labels of their suit on their sleeves- at least three of them that I recall. When I asked why the labels were not removed, they grinned sheepishly. One of them told me that is the current trend. When that same guy sat down, I observed that he wore ankle socks with a significant part of his legs showing bare skin. One candidate was particularly striking for his naivety. He came in shaking and stammered while introducing himself. He could barely string a sentence together. When I tried to make him comfortable by asking him to take a deep breath, he answered by saying, "I don't know why I'm like this today. This is actually my first interview". He just finished his national service and anxiety was written all over him.
I made two major observations during the interview session today:
1. Candidates who engaged in extracurricular activities while in school turned out better. There was a lady who was a member of SIFE- Students In Free Enterprise- while she was on campus and she was one of the bright spots. There was another fellow that represented his University at a competition outside Nigeria. He was also outstanding. Likewise, a lady who was Vice President of her Students Union Students' Union while she was an undergraduate. She demonstrated so much confidence during the interview.
2. Candidates that went to private universities performed better generally. There must be something the private universities are getting right as their graduates communicated better. They demonstrated a far more superior superior level of intelligence. I was disappointed by the performance of most graduates of mainstream universities and polytechnics. One could almost guess whether a candidate attended a private university just by listening to them.
If you're preparing for an interview, it's in your best interest to do some research about the company you want to work with if you know the company. Google is your friend. Work on your communication skills. You should be able to talk about yourself very clearly and also describe what you have done before-if you're an experienced hire. Your body language is critical- no fidgeting and no show of anxiety. All of us have butterflies in our stomach when we face strange people on an interview panel but with a smile on your face, no one will ever know. A lady cracked her knuckles throughout the interview today. It's It was very irritating but also shows showed she was nervous. Your posture is important. Dont Don't slouch on the chair. Sit straight with your back on the chair and your legs together.
Mind your language while being interviewed. It's better to be brief than to be unnecessarily verbose. By talking too much at times, you demonstrate that you know so little. Pronounce words well. It can take some practice but stand in front of a mirror and rehearse until you get better. Be ready to defend your certificate. Demonstrate that you actually earned your degree. Maintain eye contacts contact . That shows your level of confidence. Good grooming is key to your success. No matter the current fad, it's safer to be conservative in your dressing. Dark coloured suits are best for interviews. Stay with white or blue shirts for men. You can never go wrong with them. You must have a great sense of colour to want to try very bright colours. It's either it turns out so good or you turn out like a magician's apprentice. Ladies have the latitude to try out more colours but the simpler, the better. Pay attention to your hair and hand bag. Synchronize your colours properly. Avoid loud jewelleries. Look your best as the book is often judged by the cover during interviews. Your appearance is what we see first before we hear what you have to say.
We need to declare a state of emergency in our education sector and even start to teach intending graduates certain life skills. Nigerian graduates will not be able to compete with their African counterparts in a few years at this rate.
SOURCE As you have taken it upon yourself to correct others' English, I have also taken the time to point out a few of your own errors. Nevertheless, I should say that all you demonstrated here is traditional thinking. It's not that surprising. It appears interviews with you can only go one way. Any candidate taking a detour from the normal is quite likely to fail with you. |

Kobojunkie: Fixing another human being is never a good idea, so... I do understand what you mean you say you are exhausted, so why not consider no longer carrying all the weight by yourself anymore?
1. Get marriage counselor involved to help you and your husband review your current arrangement and come to a new resolution that has him carrying some of the burden you have had to carry all by yourself till now...
2. Visit a mental health therapist so as to help you dig down to reason why you feel you are to serve as mother - fixer - to your own husband. I believe that by discovering the root of that for yourself, you can begin to leg go of the need to hold it all up by yourself.
3. Give yourself a break as often as you can. If you already mentally exhausted only 6 years ago, what will the picture of your health look like by the time you are 20 years into it, assuming you never collapse finish by then? This one don come again with him condescending comments. You should really shut up! |

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: #horriblebosses And #toxicworkplace ; My Little Experience by CountVersailles(f): 5:52pm On Mar 24, 2022 |
Mygoodnessx: Horriblebosses and #toxicworkplace is trending on twitter and having worked in few places, I can say that a lot is really happening in the work space. Everyone thinks the best way to avoid all those stuffs is to be a boss of your own but then what is a boss without an employee?
For starters, you go for an interview scheduled for 9am and they’ll keep you waiting till 4pm all in the name of testing your patience…like for real After all na u dey find work so you’ll have to wait till whenever. When you finally get interviewed and they’ll ask how much you want to be paid, you mention your desired amount and they go like "no oh, we can’t pay you that for now, instead we’ll pay this", like almost half of what you mentioned….hmmm it’s well.
Or is it the managers that presents 50k to the boss as your salary and ends up paying 30k to the staff and pockets 20k? Or is it the randy ones that wants to sleep with all the female workers whether married or not and fire the ones who refuse their advances? Or the ones that encourage the foreign bosses (Chinese,Lebanese,Indian) to be wicked on the staff cos that’s what they deserve. Matter plenty!!!
What about job security? I’ve not seen, you could be on your way to work and have an accident and nobody cares, instead they call an interview for your replacement . A colleague of mine in a hotel fell off a staircase while serving customers at the rooftop bar with drinks worth over 100k and broke her leg and all the owner cared about was the drinks that were broken, long story short, she was made to pay for the drinks, nobody talked about her broken leg
Okay treat me however you like but once it’s month end, pls pay me my money cos that’s why I’m working!!! No, they won’t. Salary is meant to be paid at month end latest the last day of the month but some bosses would pay middle of the next month, some won’t even pay at all and when you complain it’s an offence, on top my money kwa? Na wah oh!!! Or is it the unnecessary deductions? You come late they deduct 1k, You no come staff meeting they deduct like 3k, at the end of the month you are left with almost nothing. Or is it the verbal and sometimes physical abuse? Some company owners really need to do better, we know it’s your company and your money no need to rub it in my face. My ex boss once threatened to break bottle on my head over a minor issue and nothing would happen, my dears, I resigned after that threat cos he can do it and truly nothing would happen, no be Nigeria we dey? SMH ♀️
I could go on and on, a lot of people are really suffering in their jobs but it’s like a "we die here" situation cos there’s no job outside so you endure whatever comes till a better offer comes,it’s so sad really.
Should be talk about our fellow colleagues, like na the same thing we find come but you want to make work difficult for me too? The "eye service" ones that are ready to throw you under the bus at the expense of your job? Or the ones sleeping with the bosses and managers telling them who to sack and who to leave? Or the extreme ones who go to the extent of using charms and juju to attack you? Hmmm… Chineke zoba anyi oh cos things are really happening.
Matter plenty no be small, which one I go talk ,which one I go leave? In all things, we’ll keep grinding and never give up cos God would surely come through. One day , the sun will shine and we go smile, cheers to everyone working legit to make a living, Ogadinma.
Drops pen… Only you? All this experience? You need to upskill |

Yinbridge: My PPR STORY
The journey started in 2019, a doctor friend of mine was to travel to UK to start working and he told me I should try look for japa means.
He introduced me to one of his frnds in Germany, who asked me to.look at study route but at that time I was rounding up my masters in UI. I really didn't care all.i wanted was to.leave Nigeria. I tried applying to schs, I got admission but just didn't get a date for visa interview (any one who knew abt this Germany waka would understand). I tried and tried and got so tired so I left the Germany stuff and moved on. That same 2019, my closest frnd moved to Canada with her husband SINP. Then my cousin who did PR. My cousin now explained d whole process to me. Guided my every move. That same December 2019, I registered for WES January 2020, I registered to write IELTS in Feb.
TRANSCRIPT & IELTS
In the midst of all this, my transcript matter was an issue.
I didn't know I could use the highest degree. I went to Uniosun to get my undergraduate transcript done and cos I did a program called FOUNDATION PROGRAM to move me to 200level, I needed that foundation result to be uploaded to WES. I heard from a friend who was on the same spot as me for over a year they couldn't find our result. The day I went to Uniosun come and see prayer. This my course mate and her parents had been on this transcript matter for over a year and didn't get it but I remember reading something on nairaland saying the sch can write a letter for me just indicating I dis FOUNDATION like a statement of result. I told the registrar. I wouldn't rule out the mercy of God cos even after telling the registrar he went to tell the VC if they could do that which wil not only help me but a host of others. I dinnor know anyone but God but God drove a whole VC to come assure me they would give me a letter and also apologise for not finding our sets result and promised they will give me that letter.
Omo I waited o from around 9 to past 5 we close together but I got something, I sent to Wes with my 200level-400level transcript and God miraculously did it, wes accepted it. THANK GOD FOR NAIRALAND PEEPS THAT I GOT THAT IDEA FRM. I was so joyful something somebody had been trying to get for a year.
Then my UI transcript, I applied in January, thinking at most Feb it will be sorted. Then came Nasu strike, from Feb till May UI didn't work because if was frm Nasu strike to Covid, it was frustrating. Later I got a frnd abt my plight who told me he knew someone in PG sch that we can use her connect. That's how I called the woman o, she said come to PG sch, we r doing skeletal work. I went lo and behold the woman didn't answer her fone again, she disappointed me.
With faith I went to PG sch met one man who worked there and explained my plight , he asked for my details and went inside. I was sitted for almost 30mins and the man came out and saw me there, was like why am I still here that he had done the verification since it didn't take him more than 5mins. M like wawu. Something I have been chasing to be verified for 5months done under 5mins. I just thanked d man and left. And after 3days, WES was done, they gave me estimated completion date but finished before the time, I could finally submit an EE profile.
IELTS PALAVA So I registered in January for ielts, wanted to do it fast, I booked a date for Feb 13th, I told myself I will do extensive reading for one month and i wrote the exam and result came as Listening 8.5 Speaking 7.5 Reading 7.0 Writing 6.5 The total score gave me 417 with my CRS calculator simulator. I was distraught, I shud have prepared better but I didn't have long time to wait, I just wanted to get it out of the way and never prayed to re write. I cried and cried another 75k to waste. Told my cousin who was helping me and she asked me to remark if I was sure I did better. 15k to remark, I didn't even have d money that time cos I had settled transcript bill and was a lot was still looking for POF, I shud now dash British Council 15k again .
A frnd of mine who had been encouraging me to move to Canada(at that time he was schooling in canada) gave me the 15k, I decided to remark and yeah. Writing changed from 6.5 to 7.0 That small 0.5 moved my score from 417 to 475, they remarked and sent after 3weeks.(P.S, my 15k was returned after 70 days) Everything was complete. Sorted my profile and submitted June 8. Then covid hit, no draws till July/Aug, I kept waiting. Finally draw started in July, it was high. I couldn't get ITA till Sept 2, d score was 475 but I beat the time I submitted. Comman see the joy in my family that finally I have one foot in.
Then I started looking for proof of funds, I am a secondary school teacher earning peanuts, my savings no reach anywhere thank God for my mum, that woman gave me all her savings plus application fee join. I used 100% deed of gift. Submitted in Sept 29, 2020.
At that time I was al up for adding my BF. Read up stuffs from nairaland abt how to do it and digested the reading. We got married Nov 6 2020, I added him and he got added December 16, 2020. To me everything was moving fast, like I knew people who's spouse had not been added after they sent their documents so I was happy thinking latest by end of new Yr first quarter, Canada here I come so Dec 30th 2020, he was sent his biometrics . He did biometrics Jan 6 2021. And then the long wait started. Nothing from ircc for the whole year. (I cried and cried, I was tired, my family was tired) I ordered gcms nottes in May, came bk everything for my husband passed but mine criminality was left. M like m the PA, mine shud be passed na. But we kept waiting all year, my 2020 Aor peeps kept going I was sad but we had to keep waiting. It kept stalling our plans. We couldn't move on cos we dunno when PPR WILL come, we did everything for a temporary time. It was crazy. 2022 started and we started hoping tor the new year. Before 2021 ended, I saw people getting PPr from doing remeds. Told.husband let's do remed, he said no they will tell us, I wasn't having it. I booked IOm 13th Jan. We did it and it was not passed. Others were getting passed on my Ottawa group. For weeks I kept crying.
Then I called Ircc agent. They said my file got transferred to Montreal 19th November 2021. Why will my file be transferred. I was more sad cos they said Montreal is a dead zone. We kept on praying. People kept telling me 1st quarter will not pass you by. I felt bad. I just managed to pull thru everyday. Then a frnd of a frnd kept telling me to send mails everyday that they see it even if they don't reply. I made it my life's work o. Sending mails everyday like no man's business because I had already quit my job in January when I had a one chance incident going to work. So everyday by 2pm I sent mails. Today 18th March 2022, the mail came in check your application for blah blah. My heart skipped. I ran to check there and there medicals passed 18th march, ppr mail sitting there. I don't even know how to feel since sept 2020. God has given me d best gift yet.
It has really been a long journey of test of patience but God Is good and kind to me and my family.
Special thanks to everyone on this group that was there to help. God bless and grant everyone speedy ppr.
AOR SEPT 29 2020 PPR MARCH 18TH 2022 VISA OFFICE MONTREAL Congrats! Sadly, desperation is all I see here. Make una try dey take an easy. Why cry over things you can't control? Be taking it easy abeg. Life is not that hard, don't make it harder on yourself. You were always going to get PPR and crying and overthinking didn't make it easy. No offense. |
