The VP was trying to be clever by half and was trying to as usual blame the PDP.
Rehabilitating already existing roads is more important than constructing new ones. So if you guys know this, why did you guys not say it?... Instead you chose to lose sleep and then start labelling the VP a liar? Where is the sense in that? |

Kennydoc: Your points are clear, but the whole arguments would not have arisen if the Pastor VP didn't start playing unnecessary politics. Fashola acknowledged that GEJ's administration did a lot in terms of road construction, but in a bid to remind Nigerians how 'terrible' GEJ's administration was, the VP brought up the issue of new roads. I say it to you that it was a needless point he made.
I can almost bet you that this same administration would exhaust their 4 years tenure without completing any new road. There are much fewer sites/locations that need new federal roads than roads that need rehabilitation. A sensible government will focus on the rehabilitation of the existing roads. I'm sure even the VP himself cannot name any route today that is in a greater need of a new federal road than for the repair of the existing one. Point of correction firstly, the online reports about Fashola praising GEJ for constructing over 20,000km of roads is most likely a scam peddled only by an online tabloid (pointblanknews); not everything you read online is real cos I wonder how many kilometres of roads are in Nigeria for Fashola to claim that GEJ built 20,000km. Oh yes, mentioning the lack of new roads may have been a needless point considering that fixing old bad roads is more important, but the irrational, disjointed and pointless defences by GEJ's supporters successfully made an issue out of a non-issue. |
Politics › Re: Laolu Akande Asks Nigerians To Name Road Projects Completed In Last 10 Years by obailala(m): 7:07pm On Mar 01, 2016 |
Kennydoc: Guy, why the focus on GEJ? The spokesman asked for new roads started and completed in the last 10 years. Was GEJ in power for 10 years? I don't understand this undue hatred for the man.
Now to the question, why are you guys fixated on NEW roads? Are we really in dire need of new roads in this country or repairs and maintenance of the existing roads?
If anybody wants to judge a government by construction of new roads, then Lagos will be one of the worst performing states, as construction of new roads in Lagos is nearly impossible, save for bridges and flyovers.
Are you aware that to repair some existing roads, it costs over 80-90% of the amount it takes to construct brand new roads, especially when a complete overhaul of the road is done.
Now can you point to me the routes in Nigeria where there are urgent needs for brand new federal roads.
You guys should stop playing unnecessary politics with this road construction issue. Repair and maintenance of the existing federal roads is more important than constructing new ones, while the existing ones are in a bad shape. Firstly, whether you agree or not is a story for another day, but the person I quoted was referring to GEJ, hence the focus on him. It is not also news that 99.9% of the attacks on the VP are from individuals sympathetic to GEJ, so please let's not deceive ourselves by feigning ignorance of why GEJ's name is mentioned here. I don't hate GEJ, he tried his best even though his best was appalling. What I dont like is the constant deceit of his supporters and that's what I usually attack, not GEJ himself. Now why the focus on 'new' roads? The focus on 'new' roads is simply because the innocent mention of 'new' elicited these entire conversations. The importance of new roads are well documented, don't try to downplay the importance of new roads linking up new cities and creating short-cuts to bypass high traffic routes (the benin bypass is an example of a new road and the 2nd niger bridge is also a new route whose importance should never be downplayed). Similarly, the priority given to fixing of old dilapidated roads over building of new ones is also well acknowledged and appreciated (I am not a dunce not to know this). However if this point was used as an argument, it would have been a more sensible approach and this matter wouldn't have lingered beyond 24 hours. However when not-too-smart impulsive defenders jump in, label the poor VP a liar, a fake pastor and call for his head, then that is exactly the sort of poor response which leads to all these needless debates over semantics. |

Only groups that harbour plans to attack the peace of Nigeria should be worried about such a development. But that's if this report is even true. |

I have no idea what prompted the statement by the VP. But attacking his motive or defending the priority given to fixing old roads over building new ones should have been the a more mature response, not labelling him a liar. The statement of his spokesperson is obviously in response to the backlash. As for their inaction, I'm sure you would agree with me that a man who fails to plan is a man who has planned to fail. Existing roads are sufficient and would serve if rehabilitated or expanded and the money which would have been used for new roads channelled to other sectors, power, health, agriculture, tourism. That is a more economical and wise approach. There are many road in need of rehabilitation, fix them!
Its like a man with a faulty generator spending 100,000 Naira to buy a brand new generator when 5,000 Naira can fix his existing generator and make it serve perfectly.

VP says no new rd was built VP's spoke person says No built rds where completed So who is fooling who? Whether they mean any good is not the issue here, the VP simply said no NEW FG roads were built in 10 years (a fact). GEJ supporters took it personal, labelled the VP a liar and rained countless insults at him. The VP has now responded through his spokesman by politely asking those labelling him a liar to kindly mention the names of the new roads. FYI, the VP and his spokesman have said exactly the same thing, don't rely on the title of this thread or on comments you read online. Here's the direct tweet from the spokesman below. www.nairaland.com/attachments/3452242_vp_png49928d4bb7aa374ea01de0ee0fcb2888And yeah, just starting a project is clearly different from 'starting and progressing to significant level.' A hard stone in the middle of a river has a dry core like the stone in the desert. OF WHAT USE ARE 'ROADS' THAT ARE NOT MOTOR-ABLE OR MOTOR-ABLE WITH PAINS? why would you embark on entirely new roads when 'existing' ones are of no use...'this would be the wisdom of a fool'.
GEJ took the FG all time tarred road record from 4,000KM to over 24,000KM and Foshola gave the testimony then Osibanjo Osibande and PMB are having migraine over this statement of fact.
The empirical evidence available as given by principal witness 1 ((PW1), Fashola) is 4000 to 24000 km in 6 years which means 20,000km in 6 years implying 3,333.33Km per year. PMB and Osibande have spent approximately 1 year, how many kilometers or old roads have they fixed and how many meters of new roads of the designed and constructed? The VP made a simple innocent statement, you labelled him a liar. Now you are asked to prove he is a liar, instead you come up with these mumbo jumbo defence about new roads not being necessary. So why did you not come up with this defence originally?... Why did you choose to call the poor man a liar?... Don't you see the folly in your approach? Now I assume you are a man of wisdom judging by your use of words and proverbs, but has this wisdom permitted you to believe that 20,000km of roads were tarred during GEJ's reign in 5 years? I may not have your level of wisdom, but I find it strange that 20,000km of roads were rehabilitated to 'VERY GOOD' status under GEJ yet the major federal roads which I ply in southern Nigeria (Lagos-Ibadan, east-west road, Elele-Owerri road, Onitsha-enugu road, Enugu-PH road, Aba-Ikot-Ekpene etc.) are still a far cry from 'VERY GOOD.' So the big question I keep asking is, where are these 20,000km of VERY GOOD roads actually located?... Probably located in the north (because the last time I was in the far north was in 2009)? Now may I also ask why this alleged report about Fashola saying GEJ built 20,000km of VERY GOOD roads, why was this story only reported by a single tabloid/blog called pointblanknews? Why were all other media houses, including the pro-PDP, pro-APC and the neutrals barred from reporting this story? |

gunuvi: I will only respond to you because you are polite with your response too. New roads is not something anyone should speak of but how to improve on existing roads. Federal governments everywhere hardly construct new roads, it is the state and local governments that identifies new roads and construct such but not the central government. What the vice president said was uncalled for and should not be celebrated by anyone. This is 2016 and people needs better directions and wants to have evidence for it. Shalom The VP's statement was never meant to be celebrated, it was just an innocent passing statement which wasn't meant to be broadcast, not until GEJ supporters pounced on the poor man labelling all sorts of derogatory names chief of which is LIAR. Ezenwammadu: And why should new roads be constructed while the old ones are left to waste away Now this is a more reasonable approach to the argument which you and your Jonathanian colleagues should have followed instead of ignorantly tagging the VP a liar and disgracing yourselves online over semantics (meaning of the word 'NEW'). Now to answer your question, new roads are sometimes very necessary to open up possible short-cuts to ease traffic and to open up new cities. That is not to say the old roads shouldn't be fixed. A good example of a new road is the 24km benin bypass which was completed in 2002/2003. You dont want to imagine what life was like before this road for travellers between the SE/SS and Lagos who had to spend several hours in Benin city traffic. Another good example of a new road should have been the 2nd Niger Bridge including the 35km bypass route which would have enabled travellers avoid the deadly traffic of Onitsha when travelling to the SE especially in December (this is one big area GEJ failed to shine). HIGHESTPOPORI: You Apc guys are clowns, what do u mean by new roads,so GEJ should leave existing roads dat needs rehabilitations to build new roads dat leads to same destinations? Even a toddler should know the importance of building new roads to link up cities and bypass areas of congestion. If new roads aren't necessary according to your 'non-clownish' wisdom, so why has there been a clamour to build the 2nd Niger bridge and an Onitsha bypass route? Meanwhile all the roads you enjoy today were once built by a human as new roads at one point in time. |

Now I do not have full info on the current conditions of all the REPAIRED roads you mentioned but at least I know the condition of the following which concern me: - GEJ did not start the East-West Rd and he did not finish it. The road is still a long way from being completed. - GEJ did not start the Abuja-Lokoja Rd and he did not finish it. A large chunk of the road is yet to be completed. - GEJ did not start the Onitsha-Owerri road project, 95% of that project was completed under OBJ, GEJ only completed about 5% of the job and commissioned it. I do not understand how or why these roads are being mentioned as NEW roads, these are roads that all existed before I was born. Even in terms of repairing the roads, GEJ only did portions, he didn't start and he didnt finish the jobs. So how these roads are CONSTANTLY being mentioned as GEJ's sole achievements completely beats my imagination. |

dearpreye: No single person can solve Nigeria's myriads of problems, despite the noise the APC and its supporters made and are making. We are struggling with serious structural issues as a nation; and until we change this weak structure and give overwhelming powers to the states, there's NO going forward.
Well, I didn't expect anything meaningful from a man who didn't upgrade even his SSCE during the last 34 years; he lacks the information and mindset for a 2016 Nigeria. APC was never the solution from the outset. Buhari promised 3 main things, security, corruption and economy. Somehow, some way, some progress has been made in the decimation of boko haram; hopefull, more would be done. For corruption, if not for anything, you will agree that people in power today now watch their backs before they engage in their usual acts of stealing and corruption. Even though we still have a long way to go in cleaning up the system, you will agree it's no longer so easy to steal any more and those caught in the act will not be left untouched. In terms of the economy, unfortunately the average economy we had before was crippled to zero before power was handed to Buhari, no thanks to the continuos crash in oil prices and the 2015 elections which gulped enormous funds. He may so far appear to founder in this area but that is only an illusion since the real results of whatever efforts he makes today would only be felt in the long term. About APC not being the solution, I do not know about that because they still have 3 years to prove themselves before the next election. But one thing I was sure of is the fact that PDP was definitely not the solution and they confirmed, reconfirmed and removed all doubts about this fact in their 16 years rule. Now is definitely the time to try something else and patience is key. |
Politics › Re: Power Supply Drops To 2,665MW Due To Explosions, Gas Constraint by obailala(m): 12:39pm On Mar 01, 2016 |
LordAdam: I think the policy makers are subtly against the coal idea because it will have to be located in the SE axis. The first coal electricity project started under GEJ was by a private consortium. It will be interesting to see what Buhari and Fashola say about it. As for this year, none of Fashola press statements has mentioned anything about coal.
I think like the refinery and tomato paste private sector revolutions, coal electricity production is one sector that will need private sector revolution if it needs the support of the federal government. The major problem is that the power sector is a capital-intensive sector especially the production/generation sub-sector. Our banks can't sustain the amount of loan involved citing the lots of bad loans they have and the current state of the economy. FDI is at its lowest levels in 5 years, the privatization of the electricity sector is not yet complete, so we cannot exactly count on foreign investors to throw their money into private coal electricity production.
About the gas, it is a fairly recent idea to base the bulk of our electricity production on gas. It used to be the dams. So challenges are expected. However, the stakeholders have to figure out a way to check the frequent vandalism. Now is the time to do goat and yam theory because Nigeria does not have the finance or means to monitor all the gas pipelines with manned security guards, and brute force is not a solution.
If true federalism was in vogue, this problem would be far less severe. So right now, it is very difficult to say how we can curb this. Even the oil pipelines that is predominant in just two zones (SS and SW) with a standing military force (JTF) and contracted private security (Tompolo (before his fall out), Ayiri (still has his contract) et al), and billions of naira spent on security, we still have vandalism from the creeks in Bayelsa to the slums in Ijebu. It's now vandalism of gas pipelines throughout the country that we would be able curb?
Buhari and Fashola has to act fast in this regard because there is no more oil boom, oil will remain at perpetual lows for the next couple of years, so we cannot afford to be sinking money in the wrong hole. Moreover, if investors don't make the profits they expect in time, it will greatly undermine our privatization efforts.
-Lord Firstly, if the coal plants being in the SE is the problem of the policy makers as you allege, then it could have been built in Benue or Kogi. Secondly, if it being in the SE is the case as you allege, then all the gas powered IPP's built in the SE wouldn't have been executed. We need to really wake up and expunge this paranoid mentality from our heads if we must make any reasonable progress. The reason why no coal plant has been built in the SE is the same reason why the Mambilla hydro dam, Ajaokuta & Delta steel plants and many other worthwhile projects have not been executed; it is the general Nigerian problem of corruption and visionless/focusless leadership, and not a SE marginalisation issue like most of us have been brought up to believe. Regarding the planned coal plant in Enugu, I think that is wholly an idea of Barth Nnaji's Geometric Power Ltd. I have no idea of the progress of that project nor whether it was ever started. |

Befor you call him an idiot, look at yourself. Did you not see where he wrote 'IF' she is really 17? ANd by the way, he did not say she shouldn't be returned home, he only implied that 'IF' she is truly 17 and the boy 18, then it would be a difficult case to force her to come home or stay at home. But obviously, you and most of the posters so far on this thread have jumped in and strangely viewed the issue purely from the apc vs pdp perspective, hence your discernment has become rocket science. |

As usual, another evil witch has set up a brother and messed his entire life up. May we be delivered of the spirit of konji and the hordes of problems it could bring. |
