SLAP44:True. But those people you "Can" purportedly feed are currently feeding without your efforts. So how's saying this Valuable. The Igbos should fix their facilities. sure. You don't have to rub it in that others can't exist without you. That's really laughable. |
mrvitalis:Nice points. But my opinion is that you didn't need to include the "Laziness" statement. Igbos are in Virtually all Nigerian states for business/Residency. Are all Nigerian people (except the Igbos) Lazy too? It may appear right but reducing the reason why we spend money to just "Laziness" and "Ignorance" is too shallow. When you send your ward to school (as an educated parent) are you lazy or/and ignorant too ? The alternative, which is, having your children homeschooled, while possible to most educated parents IS not the most effective use of time — if such a parent is to make a living/function properly in other areas. (We only have 24 hrs /day). If I decide to start a Telco or Banking or a Utility business today, having all technical capacity to start one. The government would typically require a "licensing" fee of a few $m, Am I paying for my laziness or ignorance here? Because of the limited time we all have per day, there's a limit to what a person can do. In prehistoric times, we met our needs ourselves but with the realization of trade, Men began to focus on areas of competitive advantage. Not because of Laziness or Ignorance, but because this practice of focus/specialization benefits mankind as a whole. An Engineer is an Engineer. He is not an Ignorant/Lazy doctor. Again when Igbos move into Lazy and ignorant geographies and launch thriving businesses who are the patrons of these businesses? the Lazy/ignorant neighborhood? But how did they make the money to afford the products that the Igbos produce/sell (aren't they Lazy) ? certainly they aren't giving out these products for free right? Igbos are known to be enterprising. that's a fact. This phenomenon isn't disputed. You don't have to put others down with unwarranted snide remarks to rise up. |
Brilliant piece. |
Lamb101:To be fair, there's no evidence to suggest that the current crop wouldn't be replaced by an even worse set of leadership. Nigeria isn't only poor because of the dearth of leadership. it's also doing badly due to the fact that the average (Mode) Nigerian isn't really a person of Integrity. The Integrity of a Country's Citizenry reflect largely (not perfectly though) in its leadership. When the average Nigerian becomes better (integrity), the average leader stands a better chance of being more effective too. God help us. |
ValCon888:That's hasty and clearly untrue. Religion and Education/Science are not always at parallel. One doesn't have to exist at the exclusion of the other. Some of the best institutions of learning in the US & Around the world were founded by religious organizations/ Religious people. In Africa, Between the 50s - 70s religious organizations set of schools in places where it wasn't fashionable to have any. Most people think religion(Christianity) implies the absence of tribulations (sort of a happy go lucky life). This is untrue. Hardly any steady Christian in the Bible lived life without hard times. A true Christian lives above the "God Why" expectations — and still trusts God notwithstanding the times we suffer. Science & Religion can coexist. In fact they do. |
So Sad. As the British would say, You can't write a script like this. |
Racoon:That position was dubious at best. Did CCECC have a substantial number of sick(COvid 19) patients then? If they did, why weren't they treated as others in the isolation centres (see of whom were expatriates)? The Chinese doctors were alleged to have been placed on a 2 week isolation before being allowed to attend to their mission in Nigeria. Did the CCECC affected staff have to wait for that long to be attended to? I told 9jarealist that all wasn't well with that position (i.e. that they were to attend to Chinese alone) but he felt differently. I hope this is not true. But ask yourself, isn't it easier to sent the sick Chinese back to China for treatment than to have doctors flown over here then spending 2 weeks in self isolation ? God help us. |
caleboxylic:Power availability from the grid is really poor. sure. But at 15% for the 5 eastern states, this is pretty much higher than the average % for the rest of the 30 states (even excluding Lagos & FCT). Your expectations are brilliant though. |
GideonG:Spot on. But the rise of these areas is not/should not be in isolation or to the exclusion of traditional Industries. In fact, Data Science exists at the intersection of Programming, Statistics AND Subject Matter expertise. Meaning that people should also develop deep knowledge of the industry they seek to support with these Data skills. IOTs(Internet of things), Alternative Energy systems and Fintech are also emerging. Poor Countries like ours Would continue to be rewarding to traditional Industries within the next 20 yrs. Probably. Real estate, FCMGs, Utilities, etc. Biotechnology is also noteworthy. God help us. |
jlinkd78:Herbert wigwe is NOT the "Owner" of Access Bank in the sense that I own my shoes. Commercial banks are owned by a fairly large consortium of investors, himself being one. The N1bn donation wasn't a unanimous decision by him alone. The board surely consented to it. Whether or not he influenced their consent. |
IamMichael:None of the points he mentioned was true? That China didn't suddenly increase its casualty figures by 50% three weeks ago? — this too? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/04/17/world/asia/china-wuhan-coronavirus-death-toll.amp.html America's leadership currently is terrible. Politics is a mess globally. Worse in America. But saying China didn't send conflicting signals by tampering with health figures or non reporting in many cases is a lie. There are cases of missing bloggers in China who suddenly disappeared. Worse still, China muscled Tencent it of reporting health numbers once. America's currently leadership is laughable. true. But defending the CCP is a non starter. |
Nigeriabiafra80:Wasting his funds? What would that mean? When you've risen in life and transcended your professional pursuits and go on to achieve unimaginable financial success, at some point, the allure for Profits fade a bit and a man (at least most reasonable high achievers) begin to think and be driven by legacies. Can I vouch for his true motives? No. But is their evidence that his life's work in the past has been a tremendous Value to mine and your life here on earth? YES. One could then give him the benefits of doubt on these moves. If you think the World's population growth shouldn't be properly managed particularly in Countries like Nigeria then, well, good luck. But I have very often observed that an unbridled population growth terribly escalates the severity of most problems. |
Greyworld:That's a big joke. Microsoft is a valuable entity. Valuable as in they create products that drives the world of work. Ms Excel is used by ~1bn people Worldwide. There are practically (excluding Linux used by tech heads) 2 Major PC Operating systems in the world. Macintosh and Windows. How many Nigerians own a mac.? Microsoft continues to drive the world of work in Cloud, ERPs and Collaborative tools offerings. They'll fail if they become poor at this. Otherwise, let's just say MSFT is one of the top 10 most important Corporations since the 20th Century. And they are going no where. |
BigJoe19:That's a very unlikely case. would really like to know if you know one or you are just assuming possibilities here. |
tidalstorm:Probably. Thought so too. I have always said that Racism (though terrible ) is a scapegoat. Other forms of Prejudices are rife in our world today. All with a smirk of the "You aren't up to my level" ideology. |
Ussycool:He has a PhD. in Public Administration. From the very acclaimed UI. Interesting, right? |
sexylassie2:There are good and bad people everywhere. Lebanese have a spotty reputation as employers BUT Everyman must be judged on a case by case basis NOT on group reputation. I am sure you don't want the Negative reputation of Other Nigerians abroad to affect your own perception by others. Still there are good Lebanese providing good jobs for Nigerians in Nigeria as we speak. For every bad Lebanese employer their are maybe 5-10 worse Nigerian employers. Marriage on its own does not determine whether one is a racist or not. The former NBA Franchise owner Donald Sterling was found to have made racially denigrating comments about blacks. He was dating a black lady. Marriage is itself a Prejudiced (biased) activity. We choose one person to the exclusion of others for 'mere' FEELINGS. Isn't that Prejudiced? No one should marry to prove patriotic commitment. Is it because the Lebanese are usually well to do? There are many beggarly Touregs on the streets of Nigeria today. Why don't Nigerians marry them? Because they aren't well to do? What does it mean really to be a Nigerian? Criticizing the Nation everyday and be black skinned? Trust me if all Nigerians actually refused to work for these guys or buy their products they'll go. Until then they are tax paying-job-creating Nigerians. Not worse than the average bad Nigerian and probably not better. N.b. I have not worked for any Lebanese. But I have Worked for Nigerians that were, well, Inhumane at times (even though I still appreciate them for giving me a job). |
RichDad1:True. They know Nigeria far more than the average Nigerian. |
helinues:Really? Staying how many Months at home? Many workers had to work from home. Essential Manufacturing workers worked in Safe batches. How then do you want to claim those days as off-work. Capitalism is often ruthless. I know that. It seeks to squeeze value from all productive assets. that's typical. But for you to make 'generalized' claims that staff stayed/played at home. That's untrue. I certainly don't work for Dangote though. |
yanabasee1:It's a great company but its decline is not the end of the World. Why? The Company was created by Mortals(albeit great men). It's not eternal. But of course this isn't its end these guys are sophisticated investors. Of the Fortune 500 Companies in 1955, Only 60 Still remain(in 2017). Shell is European though but you get the point. This is not the end of the World. Unless maybe it is. |
Hahahaha. Who's "We" now? A governor who has reasonable access to the President and who in any case (whether expired rice was sent or not) he (governor) wasn't going to partake in the rice being shared. Coming openly to take our sides? "We"? These guys would still politicize spoilt rice? |
teepain:True. totally agree. |
teepain:Hello sir. Being tax deductible doesn't take away from being a PR act. Every good thing you do that you bring to public light Voluntarily is PR . PR is not bad. Always. But it is PR. |
wman:The N1bn is "just a Month's Budget" right ? Well a Month is a big deal in business. Even for big ones. How many months have we had the lockdown ? In fact, in less than 2 weeks into the lockdown, Large Companies were already Complaining of being hugely affected by it. So explaining away 1bn as "just a Month expense" doesn't cut it. Your take on the donations as a PR move is brilliant though. I too have been searching for a reason to explain it. This seems apt. |
Let's be clear about one thing though, an illiterate is someone who cannot read or write NOT one without a tertiary education. |
If all Nigerians are as Sincere, transparent and strict like this man we would have moved (Painfully) forward as a Nation. I like forward. Painful or not. |
careytommy37:Or maybe it's quite possible that the Most hate brew right here in Nigeria. Between Nigerians. Or should that be excused. I say it is just as bad. Racism (though very terrible) is a scapegoat. Prejudice and hate exist everywhere in many forms. I wouldn't prefer an Hausa man — who is Condescending/hateful to me for tribal reasons to a foreign who's just the same — because one is of the same hue as me. God help us. |
Wow. These people are restricting learning (with no reason). They are suggesting that ALL children learn at the same place. With Broadcast video lessons with zero playback. Hahahahaha. Traditional Education keeps treating every child the same way. How wrong. You're holding many back. To think these Educational experts should know this. |
Diiet:SA has a pact with Cuba. Cuba has supported South Africa with Doctors and Medical training for SA students since 1996. Strange though right? Especially since Cuba itself isn't particularly amongst the more buoyant Nations. |
DanseMacabre:Sorry but if we were to "divide" the Country now and a New bia... Emerges, How exactly does the logistics work? Please don't put aside my questions with the "Let it happen first" remark. Other considerations are: Are all parties to this proposed secession really Fully Consenting? Do we declare Invalid the Nigerian Citizenships of ALL indigenes of the seceding nation Illegal? Would their stay in Nigeria be Void. Would they lose rights to property they legally owned if they are in "Nigeria". — Even if /where they are NOT in support of the bia... Project? Would the governments in the would be state stop receiving allocations from the centre immediately the "deal" is struck and fend for themselves while the new Nation builds. Who Provides Policing/Adjudication in the new state before the New state Builds these institutions. Are citizens of the New state expecting to have "free" access into Nigeria to transact /live as before ? — Especially seeing that they are many currently in "Nigeria". Is "Nigeria" expected to bear the initial costs associated with the birth of a state— until the New state is fully up and running Or who bears this costs. Note that I am not saying these are impossible obstacles. I am saying, look , have we thought through the tangible effects on this on our people while adjusting to this adventure or maybe are we blindly following the rhetorics of Some 'pained' elite. Cheers. |
comshots:The Private jet story wasn't much of a 'big splurge' expense as he explained it. it was really mostly with help of his club owner. By the way he did seek medical help extensively before going to 'church'. Life's sometimes sour. Even today many footballers have their careers cut short due to injuries. think Michu, Vermaelen or even Dembele (recently). God help us. |
Dukeolumidemans:But everyone can't be their own boss. that's impractical. that's a facile solution to the problem at hand. I |
